Karen González-Jensen Karen González-Jensen holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture and a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Design from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. Professionally, architect González-Jensen worked during ten years in the Puerto Rico State Historic Preservation Office (PRSHPO). In addition to her duties in the evaluation of projects under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and submitting nominations to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), she was appointed as Auxiliary Adviser in charge of the permanent improvements program of the PRSHPO, responsibilities that included being in charge of the rehabilitation of various historic properties within the city of San Juan (among others the Hospital de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción El Grande and the Comandancia de la Policia of La Fortaleza) and the coordination with Canadian firm UMA Engineering, Inc. of the Conservation Plan and Inventory of Art and Objects at the Palacio de Santa Catalina (better known as La Fortaleza – the oldest executive mansion still in use in the western hemisphere, a UNESCO designated World Her interest for the history of Puerto Rico and its architecture took her to be accepted in the doctoral program in history of the University of Puerto Rico, where she completed half of the credits towards the degree. After a period working in the private sector as a project manager for commercial construction, architect GonzálezJensen was appointed Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer at the Puerto Rico State Historic Preservation Office. From that position, besides sharing responsibilities with the State Officer to ensure the compliance of the agency with all its legal obligations, she collaborated with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, with the Secretary of the Interior and with the National Park Service and other dedicated branches of the federal government in their mission of preserving the historic properties of Puerto Rico. She advised, educated, assisted, and trained PRSHPO personnel, municipal, state, federal and international agencies and the general public on matters of historic preservation. Also, she managed the projects related to the implementation of compliance alternatives for historic properties under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Her interest in history and historic research took her to initiate, foment and participate of various projects of investigation and publication of the agency, and to be the editor of the PRSHPO magazine: Conversa/Conserva, where she also published several of her articles and investigations. Through her professional career, architect González-Jensen has been invited to present lectures to academic and professional institutions, state and federal agencies and the public in general on issues related to historic preservation, the history of Puerto Rican architecture and the urban development of San Juan. Furthermore, given her experience and expertise, while she worked in Government she was selected on several occasions to offer specialized tours to dignitaries and distinguished local and international officials, professional groups, and even the own tour guides working at La Fortaleza -the governor’s mansion. In 2008 she established ARK Consultants in Historic Preservation. Under that firm, she worked several conservation projects for clients such as the National Park Service, the Office of the Superintendent of the State Capitol, the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust, the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, the School of Fine Arts, the municipality of Guaynabo, the Office of Legislative Services of the State Capitol, Caribbean Project Management, STANTEC and other individuals and corporations. In addition, architect González-Jensen has stood as the only architect who has designed, built and monitored projects at Castillo 2 San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristobal (both properties designated World Heritage Sites by UNESCO) and the only restoration project of the walls of old San Juan outside the federal scope (at the San Justo curtain wall). For all of the above, she was chosen by the US Army Corps of Engineers to monitor the construction of a breakwater at Fort San Gerónimo. Since 2013, she shares her knowledge and experience with local audiences and visitors through Archtours –a tour guide company established to provide specialized architectural tours based on facts about the history and architecture of Old San Juan and its fortifications. More recently, last August, she began to conduct an internet radio program called Descubriendo Nuestro Patrimonio (in Spanish, discovering our heritage) that is transmitted through the radio station of the Ana G. Méndez University System of the Metropolitan University.
