A reflection on the Epiphany and true worship - "Christians have long pondered the meaning of the
Magi’s gifts. The great Scripture scholar of the third century Origen of Alexandria said succinctly: “Gold,
as to a king; myrrh, as to one who was mortal; and incense, as to a God.” 3 The symbolism makes the gifts
particularly suitable to the baby who was at once king, man, and God.
Origen’s analysis serves as a good summary, but it’s hardly the last word. Indeed, it’s a necessary and good
beginning for our contemplation, but it’s only a beginning. It is worth noting, for example, that all three
gifts were customary elements of worship in Israel’s holy place. In the Temple the vessels were crafted
from purest gold (see Leviticus 24:4- 6); the smoke of incense rose with the prayers of the priests (Leviticus
16:12- 13); and myrrh was used in the oils for anointing (Exodus 30:23). Thus, we can see in this moment a
transfer of high- priestly authority to its rightful place, with Israel’s King Messiah, the Son of David. Saint
Ephrem the Syrian (fourth century) was delighted to note that all the gifts brought by the Magi had first
been created by God. So the Magi were simply returning to God what he had first given to the world. The
gifts, however, had been profaned by their service to idols in the lands of the Magi; so, said Saint Ephrem,
they needed to be purified by contact with the Holy One of Israel.” (Scott Hahn, Joy to the W orld: How
Christ;s Coming Changed Everything)

ESTA PENSANDO
EN SU DONACION
DE NAVIDAD PARA
SU PARROQUIA?
Puede ayudar de esta
manera:
arquitecto trabajando
en el proyecto.
Pero también queremos emprender el PROYECTO
DE LOS VITRALES. Estas her mosas ventanas
Tenemos
ARE YOU THINKING
OF A CHRISTMAS
GIFT FOR YOUR
PARISH THIS YEAR?
This is how you can
help: As we approach
our Centennial, 100
years of grace and tradition, we would like to
beautify and preserve the
legacy we have received,
both in the church built
of stones and the living
church, which is us. We
have at least two main
projects at hand: the
Sanctuary Project –altar
and sanctuary floor- that
is underway. There’s an
architect working on it at
this time, and we have
already received a couple
of donations and saved some money towards it. We
will have more details soon. The second important
project is our STAIN GLASS WINDOWS. They are
original and amazingly beautiful but are not in good
shape. Yes, it is a big project to undertake, but before
they shatter on us we need to do something about it.
The whole project is expensive but we can start now
with your help! I have sought approval from the Art
and Environment Committee from the Diocsese of
San Jose and have also worked with three companies
to give us estimates. The good news is that we will
start the project to have three of the stain glass windows repaired, which costs about US$ 24,000. I have
enough money for two at this time, but we count on
your generosity to make it to three or four. The more
windows we do at once the less expensive it will be.
The south wall on West San Fernando Street is the
worst, and the water from rain coming in is damaging the building as you can see, therefore we will
start on that side.
If a family wants to adopt a window – about US $8,
000, or half a window, their names will be on a
plaque under that window. All other donors’ names
will be placed on a larger plaque in the church.
If you feel you can help at any level, please, make
your checks during the month of December payable
to St Leo the Great Church. Memo: Stain Glass Window Project. You can place your check in the collection baskets, mail them or bring them to the parish
office. We are also working on a matching grant
through a local institution.
HELP US MAKE SAINT LEO LOOK AS
BEAUTIFUL AS IT CAN BE. GOD BLESS YOU.
