Dear Friends!
I’ve decided to name this short message “Three Faces of Pope Francis”. I did so because
someone told me that the Pope’s face looks different when he meets with officials,
politicians, when he speaks to people, and when he prays. After participating in World Youth
Day in Cracow-- Poland, I agree with that opinion. Let me tell you a few words about this wonderful time.
Pope’s serious face:
I went to Cracow with Fr. Tomasz, a friend and a group of young people. We went there after six days of
preparation and celebration in our Polish dioceses. We got to Cracow on Monday evening, went through the
process of registration in the pilgrim office. We took our pilgrimage equipment: a backpack (red, yellow or blue), a
pilgrim guidebook, a prayer book, a raincoat, a scarf, a shawl, a sign with my name on it, which enabled me to
travel by public transportation in Cracow and tokens for food. From that moment the city of Cracow became our
hometown for almost one week.
On Wednesday morning we were expecting the Holy Father who was to travel on an avenue nearby. The Pope
traveled slowly in his white vehicle and showed us his “serious face”: the face of a man who bears the burden of
the world. We all knew that the young people from all over the world brought to our country their faith, joy, and
also a variety of questions. Looking at Pope Francis’ face I was asking myself, what is he going to tell us; how is he
going to give us the courage and hope?
That evening we were together in Blonia – a park or rather a lawn in the center of Cracow. The Holy Father
showed up and among the songs, dances and waving flags from all over the world he asked the whole
congregation in Italian: “Can you change the reality?” After we all cried-out in Italian: “Si!” (“Yes!”), he asked us
once again: “Are you ready to change it?” And he got a huge applause and real explosion of young joy in response.
This is something I’ll never forget.
Pope’s praying face:
The following days we went to the soccer field and listened to catechesis given by three Polish bishops. I must
note that there was separate catechesis for every language group in different places of Cracow. Our guests could
also visit the Shrine of the Divine Mercy and St. Faustina in Lagiewniki (a southern suburb of Cracow) or close by
to St. John Paul II Center where his relics are placed. We might see on the screen the Pope’s visit to the Nazis’
concentration camps in Auschwitz; Pope Francis did not talk too much there. He just was there in silence walking
to the gas chambers, the cells of death, the bunker of hunger and the crematorium. He just prayed in these
terrible places showing us his “praying face.” After that he went for a pilgrimage to Czestochowa – the shrine of
the Black Madonna in Jasna Gora (Clear Mountain). We all saw him standing before the miraculous icon of the
Black Madonna, looking into Her eyes and showing his praying face once again.
After he came back to Cracow we could again see his praying face. Half a million young people attended the
Cross of the Stations on Blonia with moving music and a living stations performance. On Saturday morning Pope
Francis celebrated Mass for the priests, the seminarians and the men and women of religious life in St. John Paul II
Center. After that Mass we were asked to move towards The Field of Mercy (Campus Misericordiae). I started to
walk because the streets in that area were closed due to the papal visit. After one mile I met a police squad from
my home town and they let me enter the closed street. Suddenly, the Pope’s white car showed up surrounded by
the police and bodyguards. I stood there alone, so I called loudly: “Holy Father!” Then he looked at me and
blessed me from his car. Through that blessing May God bless all who ask me for prayers.
We met again with my group on Saturday evening in front of the Gate of Mercy on the Campus Misericordiae
Field. We were able to see once again the praying face of the Pope when he adored the Most Blessed Sacrament
accompanied by over one million young people saying peacefully the Chapter of the Divine Mercy.

WELCOME FR. BART KRZOS!
Pope’s joyful face
Then the moment came and the vigil began. The Holy
Father showed his “joyful face” and preached to us. He
asked what are we doing in this world? We are not to
vegetate or to turn our life into a comfortable couch. We
are to make our mark in this world. Facing the sufferings of
many Christians we ask where God is. And God, who in
Jesus Christ chose an uncomfortable life, is in those who
suffer.
The Pope said that the only answer which the youth
can give to the problem of current terrorism is our
brotherhood. Let there not be any place in this world
that could be even thought of: “God forsaken”. After
that joyful and hopeful speech, many people went to
confession and the youth kept singing a few more
hours.
We all are to imitate Jesus Christ doing important
things even through hardships. We all spent that night
sleeping in tents or laying on the grass in sleeping-bags
under the open sky.
That Sunday was really hot. We saw the altar with
white cross on its top and with the portraits of St. Faustina
and St. John Paul II on its sides. We prayed together our
morning prayers and enjoyed spiritual music and Gospel
songs. During Mass we saw on the huge screens the joyful
face of Pope Francis. After two deacons (one of Roman
and one of Greek rite) read the Gospel about Zacchaeus
the Tax Collector, the Holy Father gave his beautiful and
moving homily. He encouraged us to conquer three basic
obstacles that can disturb our acts of mercy: low selfesteem, fear of ridicule and fear of common opinion. Those
three obstacles were overrun by Zacchaeus and he could
finally do his acts of mercy and then “salvation has come to
his house”. Through these words we all could feel that we
were being strengthened by the power of the Holy Spirit.
After Mass the young people from our group
wished that they would stay there much longer we greeted
and said our good byes to each other. When we were in the
crowd leaving slowly the Field of Mercy. We saw happy
young people celebrating from Panama–the hosts of the
next World Youth Day 2019. They were waving their flags,
smiling, taking photos and inviting everyone.
These three faces of Pope Francis are for me the
three faces of the Church that we all could experience
attending one of the most impressive events of our
lifetime: The World Youth Day 2016 in Cracow – Poland.
Fr. Bart Krzos
We would like to
welcome back
Fr. Bart Krzos to
St. Lawrence.
Fr. Bart will be serving in
the parish during the
month of August. We thank Fr. Bart for his
ministry to our parish of St. Lawrence!
PRAYER FOR A NEW BISHOP
Almighty and all loving God, Eternal Shepherd and
Guide, we are grateful for Bishop Lynch and his
twenty years of ministry in our diocese.
During this time of transition, we trust in Your
love, confident that You will once again give to the
Diocese of St. Petersburg a shepherd who will
inspire us to be Christ’s heart of mercy, His voice of
hope and hands of justice.
Guide our new bishop to enlighten
our hearts and minds with the truth of the Gospel,
the power of the sacraments, and the desire to
serve you in all things. We ask this through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

¡Queridos amigos!

imitar a Jesucristo haciendo cosas importantes,
incluso a través de las dificultades. Pasamos toda

cosas. Te lo pedimos por Jesucristo, nuestro Señor.
Amén
