President’s Message
“Galloping to New Horizons”
I am honored and privileged to be your President for the next 2
years. I thank my husband, family, friends, GFWC members
and Mayor Cason and his wife for their support. Pam Schaefer,
thank you for making the night a night I will always remember.
As an active member for the last 18 years I have grown to be the woman /leader
and volunteer I am today due to the mentoring of the past Presidents, Chairs and
members of this wonderful club throughout the years.
As many of you know, horses are one of my passions and as a horse owner, I
have learned so much from them. Did you know that recently there are ranches
out in Wyoming and Montana where the CEO’s and president of leading
companies go to learn about leadership and Teamwork from these wonderful
animals?
Horses are natural leaders - The herd is relationally responsible. Horses are
born natural leaders trusting their senses, knowing their purpose and taking clear
action. A horse herd is inclusive - everyone belongs, everyone is essential,
everyone matters. Relationship is primary in the herd - it is based on trust,
clear communication, and the importance of each horse’s place in the herd.
A herd works together at all times trusting their lead mare and stallion to guide
them for survival.
Although there are all different they work with unity in diversity which is
consistent with our logo for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.
Power and survival are in numbers. They welcome a new horse into the herd by
placing him in the middle location for safety, guidance and teaching so the new
horse can move up gradually up the pecking order.
So my analogy is that organizations such as ours do function like a herd with
leaders, trust, risks, and a pecking order to be followed.
Power is in numbers and a cohesive teamwork just like in a herd of horses.
I want to share my goals to accomplish during the presidency.

Message from President continued..
1- Recruitment. Retention and Value of our membership. We will explore new
opportunities for recruitment, set realistic expectations, motivate and reward
our members for all that they do.
2- Increase our participation and collaboration with The City of Coral gables and
our own community.
3- We will increase our social media and public relations areas and strengthen our
infrastructure.
4– Focus on the new initiatives of the Florida State federation but also we need to
focus on the national GFWC initiatives. We will prepare to participate for the 2013
Convention which will be held right here in Hollywood in June 2013.
And last but not least I ask my board to be creative, think outside the box, and let’s
take some risks because big risks can result in big successes.
Although we are women volunteers juts like the ones that founded this club in 1923,
we are women living in 2012 and we have to evolve adapting to changes with our
technology, progress, and economy in our society.
Please note I did not choose my gait in my theme as a trot or a canter.
2 years go by very fast and there is so much to accomplish so let us join together
New 2012-14 Executive Board
Barbara Rosenthal/Sherry Wheeler Award
The Barbara Rosenthal Sherry Wheeler Award is presented to the member that for
that Club year who showed all the qualities of an excellent leader. This award started
with the Coral Gables Jr. Woman's Club and was continued when they merged with

women, many of whom have gone on to become president. Some of these wonderful
recipients are still active members of the club.

The GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club thanks you ladies for all you’ve done and
will do for our Club.
This award is about leadership. What is leadership?
L istening to the viewpoints and opinions or others
E mpowering people to “be their best”
A chieving consensus through lively debate
D elegating tasks and facilitating work
E mploying the unique skills of each member of the group
R eacting constructively to adversity
S tretching imaginations and bolstering self-esteem
H elping others to accomplish goals
I nitiating change through vision and hard work
P racticing fair and ethical decision-making policies
Each of you in your own way is a true leader, excepting positions on the executive
board or chairmanships, raising money for the Dental Clinic by writing letters to
friends and family, asking for donations and working diligently to get them, working on committees to help better the club and volunteering your time and energy in
everything you do.
All this is a sign of a good leader. This past year we have gone thru many changes.
Enforcing rules than changing them and thru it all you have stuck it out. It has
made my decision as to who receives this prestigious award challenging. So this
year I have decided to award The Barbara Rosenthal Sherry Wheeler Award to the

This year’s 2012 “Barbara Lapsley Best New Member Award” goes to……
Lisa Merheb!!!
Lisa joined the Woman’s Club in 2010, she is married to Elie, and they have two

Past President Message- Linda Hartwell
As my tenure as the president of the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club
comes to an end it brings joy and sadness to my heart. The joy in knowing that in a
few minutes I can turn my keys over to our incoming President Mireya Kilmon, but
that joy is not as much as my husband John’s. I want to take this opportunity to
thank each and every one of you for allowing me to serve as your president these last
two years. With all your help and support it has made me grow in many ways and I
can’t thank you all enough.
We have accomplished so much over this last year let alone two. Our
meetings & outings were filled with fun as well as being informative. There were
programs on Domestic Violence, Recycling, and Breast Cancer to name a few.
Toiletries were collected and bagged for the Agape Woman’s Center and the Smart
Ride Crew delivered them, Members donated food, sorted and packed it for
Thanksgiving Baskets for our Dental Clinic Families. We walked for Arthritis
attended luncheons for Easter Seals, Friends of Orphans, The Woman’s Alliance
Group which supported A Safe haven for newborns, Dade County Federation of
Woman’s Club Annual Fiesta Luncheon. Once again we supported Smart Ride. The
theme this year was games and we played Angry Birds and once again won best Pit
Stop. Over the summer we supported the Actor’s Playhouse by attending various
productions. We even had a field trip to the recycling plant in Miramar. You
traveled all the way up by me to attend. 10 of us attended the GFWC Fall Board and
9 of us attended the Spring Convention where we received many awards for all our
hard work.

We will be very much involved in recycling RX eyeglasses. If anyone has any
please bring in. We will have a meeting night to work on cleaning and packaging
them soon. We have over 1,000 again so far. Also, this year I want us to donate a
few of these glasses to Camillus House. I understand there is a need for them as
well. I have some RX sunglasses to donate there right now since One Sight does not
collect sunglasses. This is a great project for students for community hours if
anyone has grandkids or kids interested.

Hi Beautiful ladies. Want to make everyone aware of a few things
happening in our community:
Every Friday Morning a wonderful group of ladies from the Edible Community
Gardens Project meet at the Merrick House at 9:30am through 11 am. We dig in and
take care of the beautiful garden there by growing fresh herbs and vegetables and
learning all about growing good food with organic gardening. If anyone is interested in
attending please contact me so me can meet for a great experience. Even if you do not
have a lot of room in your yard. Fresh herbs can be grown in containers as well and look
beautiful. Cooking with fresh basil, parsley, rosemary, thyme, oregano is always better,
tastier and healthier. Try it!
Our city offers the following for those of you who would like to replace your showerhead and meet the qualifications: Water Conservation:
Want a FREE showerhead and home water conservation kit? If your bathroom fixtures
have not been upgraded since 1996, the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department
(WASD) will exchange your actual showerhead for a more streamlined, cost-effective
High-Efficiency showerhead as well as provide you with a conservation kit for your
home. Simply come into any one of our three exchange locations with your actual
showerhead and exchange it for a high-efficiency model and home conservation kit
absolutely FREE!
Caleb Center, 5400 NW 22 Ave. 1st Floor-(M-F 8 a.m-4:30 pm)
South Dade Government Center, 10710 SW 211 St. 1st Floor-(M-F 8am-4:30 p.m.)
Douglas, 3071 SW 38 Ave. 1st Floor-(M-F 8 am-4:30 pm)
Also available at this year's Adopt-a-Tree Events!
For additional information about this or other water efficiency programs, please call
305-448-SAVE (7283).
Some interesting facts about WASD's high efficiency showerheads:
They use only about 1½ gallons of water per minute (1.5 gpm). This represents more
than a 50% drop in the amount of water used by most people in the shower.
They are a fashionable white and include built-in massage, on/off valve and a swivel
head for user comfort and convenience.
I look forward to working with you all in our community and hope everyone has a great
summer.

Education
Susie Tilson –[email protected]
At the Spring Convention, 2012, Pat Zazzarino’s President’s Project
was presented.
It is called “Schools and Scholarships”. It consists of four parts:
Challenging every club to “Adopt a School” in their local community and
to complete at least one project that will benefit that school per club
year.
Encouraging every club to have members volunteer at a local school with a
minimum of 100 volunteer hours per club given as the minimum
objective.
Establishing a statewide Woman’s Club scholarship program that would
award ten $3,000.00 scholarships each year of Pat’s administration.
Scholarship winners would be a female graduating high school senior
or woman returning to college for career training. The goal of fund
raising during this administration will be to fund the scholarships for
the 2012-2014 administration. Any additional money raised for the
President’s Project would be invested for future scholarships. The goal
is for the GFWC Florida Scholarship program to continue into the
foreseeable future.
Lobbying state and local officials to improve funding for public schools in
Florida.
Pat’s symbol for her administration will be the red apple.
The Tucker Elementary Fifth Grade end of year party will take place this
Thursday, May 24, 2012 at our clubhouse. The students will enjoy pizza
and ice cream as they celebrate their “graduation” from the fifth grade.
The Coral Gables Woman’s Club has been the sponsor of this party for
many years. Members helping out this year are Barbara Lapsley, Linda
Hartwell, Maryann Etkin and Susan Tilson.
If you have a few hours a week you can spare to volunteer at a school near
you, please contact me. We should be able to accumulate 100 volunteer
hours.

Sabrina Perez-King - [email protected]
Our club was very successful at winning many awards at Spring Convention 2012 this
year in Orlando. At the Chair of the Home Life Committee, I’m proud to announce
that we won several awards in our category.
As a result, I’d like to announce that our club will be participating in the Special
Project that the new administration at the Federation Level has established this year:
To feed hungry children in our local schools.
I’d like as much participation as possible in locating the schools and implementing
this project throughout the year.
I do look forward to getting further details on this out to the club at the upcoming club
meetings.

Now that I have retired from my 17 years volunteering with George
Merrick's Boy Scout Troop 7, I am looking forward to spending more time
volunteering at the Coral Gables Woman's Club and serving as your Public Issues
Chair this coming year. Although I have some pretty big shoes to fill, since Mireya
Kilmon has done such a great job in this position over the past couple of years, I am
looking forward to my new position. Of course, Claire-Frances Whitehurst will still
be our Crime Watch Chair and the two of us both sit on the Coral Gables Citizen
Crime Watch Board together, since I am the representative for another organization,
the George Merrick Foundation.
June is National Safety Month and I want to improve your awareness of certain
topics. National Safety Month has an placed an emphasis on:
Safety at Work: Employee Safety; Safety at Home: Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls
Safety on the Road: Driving Safety
Also, please remember, Hurricane Season begins on June 1 and we need to be
prepared "early." Don't wait until the last minute to gather your necessary supplies.
Here is a list of the things you will need should we come under a Hurricane Watch
or Warning: Ensure you have a family disaster/emergency plan, Check hurricane
shutters and make sure they are in good working order, Check your roof and make

sure shingles and tiles are secure. Ensure that essential equipment, such as plywood
and nails to board up, are secured early. Make sure you have raincoats, boots,
flashlights, battery powered radio, hurricane lamps, matches and a first aid kit. Make
sure you have adequate insurance coverage on your home, including contents take
photographs of all your rooms in your home and/or business for insurance purposes
make an inventory of possessions. Clear your yard of debris and anything that can "fly
around" during high winds. Trim trees that hang close to your house//rood or are near
power lines. Know where your nearest shelter is located. Find a place for your boat, if
you own one and lastly, please remember that on Sunday, June 3, we will be
celebrating George Merrick, our City's Founder, 126th birthday. There is a special
celebration being held at the Coral Gables Museum from 1-5 PM, sponsored by the
George Merrick Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)3 Florida corporation organized in
2000 for the purpose of maintaining the legacy of Coral Gables founder George E.
Merrick. The foundation members celebrate and preserve the legacy of George
Merrick in Coral Gables and we hope this remembrance of his birthday will be the first
of many in the City Beautiful. Everyone is invited.
Please feel free to contact me if you would like to work on my committee. There is
always room for more!

Summer has arrived and while some are on vacation, others may be taking advantage
of the slower pace of the summer months to do some planning. If that planning
involves any activities in which the CGWC is involved, please keep me posted so that
we can maximize our Club's exposure in the news.
Remember, one of our best ways for us to recruit new members, other than simply
asking everyone we know, is by telling our story through our many outreach
activities. We have a great story to tell which, for me, can be time consuming but also
most gratifying. Thank you all for your efforts in helping our community be a better
place to live.
Since the first of the year, CGWC has been in the newspaper seven times with photos
and been featured online on the Community Newspapers web site several times. If
you are not receiving Community Newspaper e-newsletter every Monday, please let
me know and I will sign you up so that you will not miss out on our press.
For those looking for old article in Community Newspapers (CN) , simply go to
