Feast of All Saints
November 1, 2015
Pastor’s Corner
Feast of All Saints
The Feast of All Saints is a Holy Day of the Church honoring all saints, known
and unknown. This is much like the American holidays: Veterans Day and Presidents
Day, where many people are honored on one day. While we have information about
many saints, and we honor them on specific days, there are many unknown or unsung
saints, who may have been forgotten, or never been specifically honored. On All Saints
Day, we celebrate these saints of the Lord, and ask for their prayers and intercessions.
The whole concept of All Saints Day is tied in with the concept of the Communion of
Saints. This is the belief that all of God's people, on heaven, earth, and in the state of
purification (called Purgatory), are connected in a communion. In other words, Catholic and Orthodox Christians believe that the saints of God are just as alive as you and I,
and are constantly interceding on our behalf. Remember, our connection with the saints
in heaven is one grounded in a tight-knit communion. The saints are not divine, nor omnipresent or omniscient. They are just
perfect because they lived faithfully the will and ways of God.
There are thousands of canonized saints, that is, those individuals officially recognized by the Church as holy men and
women worthy of imitation. Because miracles have been associated with these people, and their lives have been fully examined and found holy by the Church, we can be assured they are prime examples of holiness, and powerful intercessors before
God on our behalf. There are also many patron saints, guardians or protectors of different areas and states of life. It may sound
crazy to have a patron saint against oversleeping, but keep in mind the Church has something meaningful for every area of our
human lives. All of these saints are celebrated throughout the year, as many have their own feast days.
All Souls Day
All Souls Day follows All Saints Day, and commemorates the faithful departed, those
who die in God's faith and friendship. However, Catholics believe that not all those who die in
God's grace are immediately ready for the Beatific vision, i.e. the reality and goodness of God
and heaven, so they must be purified of "lesser faults," and the temporal effects of sin. The
Catholic Church calls this purification of the elect, "purgatory."
The Catholic teaching on Purgatory essentially requires belief in two realities: 1. that
there will be a purification of believers prior to entering heaven and 2. that the prayers and
masses of the faithful in some way benefit those in the state of purification. As to the duration,
place, and exact nature of this purification, the Church has no official dogma, although Saint Augustine and others used fire as
a way to explain the nature of the purification.
Many faithful Catholics, including Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, grant that Purgatory may be an existential state as
opposed to a temporal place. In other words, Purgatory may be something we experience instantaneously, because it is outside
of the confines of created time and space. Many non-Catholics, including C.S. Lewis, have believed in Purgatory, and the official dogma of Purgatory is hardly offensive, even if the popular understanding of it has led to confusion. As a more everyday
explanation, many liken Purgatory to a place to "clean up" oneself before going into the presence of Almighty God.

Serra Daily Prayer for priestly and religious vocations:
Jesus, Lord of the harvest, Look with love on this portion of your vineyard. Bless the Diocese of San Diego with more priests to shepherd your people, Priests with hearts like
your own. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.
Pray for Priests and Vocations “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12,
13, NIV) When we pray for vocations for the priesthood, diaconate and religious, we actually pray for ourselves, since holy priests, deacons and religious should result in a
holier people. When we pray for these servants of Christ, we also win the favor of Christ, for we, in so praying, are furthering His work. By praying for vocations we are
helping our children and our children's children because we are using a meritorious means of preserving our faith for them. “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard
among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV)

MIDDLE SCHOOL
YOUTH GROUP
St. Stephen’s Middle School Youth Group is for youth in
grades 6, 7 & 8 and meets on Monday nights from 7:008:30 pm in the parish hall. I encourage parents to have their
middle school youth participate in youth group. The middle school years are tough and it is important that they continue their formation in the faith and foster their relationship with Jesus. In many respects Middle School kids are
on the edge because so much is going on in their lives
physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially. It can be a
very stressful and difficult time for them and their parents.
As a Catholic Community, we have the opportunity to give
our Middle School youth the EDGE they need in life:
Jesus, The Word, The Eucharist, and the Church!
Last Monday was a grade breakout night and the kids really seemed to like it!
This week we will be going to Valley Center Cemetery
to participate in the parish All Souls Prayer Vigil.
Please meet us at Church by 6:30 pm with a permission

Bible Verse of the Week
2 Timothy 3:14-17
Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from
whom you learned it, and that from infancy you have known [the] sacred scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for
salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is
useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good
work.

trabajo Bueno.
