Pima St. Tucson, AZ 85712 (520) 795-1633 fax (520) 795-1639 www.stcyril.com EXILE EXILIO Both Isaiah and Peter had the task of comforting and encouraging their communities during times of exile. The Israelites were in geographic exile from Israel; to them this was, in effect, the same as being in exile from their God. The early Christians, following the Resurrection, expected an immediate return of Christ in glory; they, too, felt in “exile” as the delay of the Second Coming grew longer and longer. All four of scripture’s authors today—Isaiah, the psalmist, Peter, and Mark—hasten to help us see things in God’s terms, not ours. They want us to know that we can never truly be exiled from God, or from God-among-us, since we know that when the faithful are gathered, Christ has come into their midst. Instead, we are encouraged today to do what we can from our end to shorten the time of our exile: to repent of our sins, to return our lives to the Lord, to live as people who seek the coming day of the Lord, when “kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss” (Psalm 85:10). Why Did We Buy New Hymnals and Covers? ¿Porqué Compramos Libros de Himnos y Cubiertas? With our parish’s financial situation being in deficit spending, some may wonder why we bought new hymnals and covers when the old ones were still in good shape. Here are the reasons why we have done this. The hymnals we use – the best bilingual hymnals available – are copyrighted for a year three period after which they are no longer able to be used legally. They must be disposed of and new hymnals bought to replace them. The blue covers – used for many years – have been falling apart and needed to be replaced. (Having the covers helps keep the hymnals in usable shape for the 3 years.) Knowing that we would be replacing the hymnals at the start of the new Liturgical Year, it was decided that this would be a good time to replace the covers also. In total, the hymnals and covers cost us $4,000. Anticipating this expense, our Knights of Columbus were asked if they would sponsor them. They agreed to do this for the parish using monies they have raised through their various fund raisers (in particular Pancake Breakfasts and Fish Fry Dinners). They also reached out to the Council at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish to help cover the costs, and received a positive response from them. There is a sticker on the back cover of the hymnals acknowledging their gift to the parish. Thank you, Knights of Columbus! We have recycled some of the blue covers that were still usable to cover some of the Spirit and Song hymnals. However, many of these hymnals are without covers and are deteriorating much quicker than they would if they had covers. Maybe someone would be willing to sponsor these covers (to replace all with new clear covers would cost around $1,000). Ask Our Lady to help you. Ask her to entreat her Son to let you know what you should do. – Bl. Marie Rose Durocher Pide ayuda a Nuestra Señora. – Beata Marie Rose Durocher It’s Cold in Church! ¡Hace frío en la Iglesia! As winter nears, our nights are colder which often means our church is cold in the morning. Unfortunately, our heating and air conditioning system is not one that can alternate according to the need to heat up or cool down the space. It is a chiller and boiler system which allows one or the other to be ready for use, but not both. So, once we switch the system over to heat, we cannot turn on air conditioning to cool the space – which is often what we need to do for our celebrations of Confirmation, Our Lady of Guadalupe and Christmas Eve which are during this time. So, if you are coming to Mass in the morning hours, you may want to wear a sweater or jacket as we won’t be able to heat the church until after Christmas.
