Dear and Wonderful People!
What a wonderful opportunity we have coming to our region on October 13, 2012!
Pope Benedict has called for a „YEAR OF FAITH‟ to officially open just two days before our Santa Barbara Regional Congress. This Year of
Faith honors the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council on October 11, 1962 as well as the 20th anniversary of the
Catechism of the Catholic Church.
The United States Bishops are suggesting that this year be…An opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion – to turn back to Jesus and
enter into a deeper relationship with him. The “door of faith” is opened at one‟s baptism, but during this year Catholics are called to open it again,
walk through it and rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his Church‟.
Within the pages of this Registration Booklet you will find a variety of amazing speakers and workshops to help you begin this year-long
celebration. Some of our workshops will help you better understand what the Year of Faith is all about and some of the workshops will help
begin the process of renewing your baptismal call by living out the everyday moments of your lives…
Faith…Sought, Renewed, Lived and Shared!
I‟ll look forward to seeing you on October 13, at Bishop Diego High School in Santa Barbara. Until then, Blessings
ALL over you and the good work you do!
Sue Spies!
Santa Barbara Regional Coordinator

101-Interfaith Dialogue: A Bridge to Peace
Sr. Rosalie Callen, CSJ
This workshop is presented to engage participants with principles
of Catholic Social Teaching related to the sacredness of life
revealed in interfaith dialogue. Through the use of prayer, videos,
PowerPoint, small and large group discussion, participants are

traditions. In responding to their baptismal commitment, an
intended outcome is for participants to work toward building
bridges to peace in their faith communities, their personal lives
and in their work spaces, at the same time celebrating the
sacredness of different faith traditions.

in this workshop.

105–Gather Together: Engaging Families
Bianca Langlois
Our Catholic Faith is lived to the fullest by catechizing and
evangelizing the community we encounter. Sometimes families are
passively living their faith, viewing formation as simply a checklist
or hoops to jump through. As Servant Leaders we have the ability
to invite families back to the church actively participating and
embracing their faith. Come to this session to network with one
another, share experiences, concerns and dreams for the families
you work with. We will gather together as church with practical
and applicable ideas.
102-Forming an Engaged Parish in the 21st Century
Deacon Jim Carper

Ministry Certificate
reasons for this sometimes seem counter intuitive. Is the
increasing secularity of our culture drawing us away from those
principles upon which we have built the Church? What does it
mean to be religious? What does stewardship mean to us today?
What myths affect our approaches to the stewardship of time,

people in a healing way? How can we respond to conflict as

301 – MOTIVATING PASSION - What are you celebrating?
Scott Boczek
In the midst of a rapidly changing culture and world, is the Church
still relevant? Are the teachings of Christ as relevant today as
they were over 2,000 years ago? If so, why is it that our pews are
empty and our community is struggling to thrive? More than ever
304-Practical Methods and Techniques for Working with
Children and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Giorgia Diomedes
Developing the skill to view the world and situations through the
minds of people with Autism can reduce behavioral incidents as
well as provide a safe and predictable place for learning.
Christians, non-Christians, people of other faiths – all are sending
you and me a clear message: Don‟t tell me, show me!” This
workshop will involve you and challenge you in a discussion that is
long over-due in our church: why has our faith become life
enhancing, rather than life changing? And so the discussion
begins… how, in some very practical ways, can we be transformed
into the disciples Christ calls us to be?
Giorgia Diomedes, is currently working with students in 2nd and
3rd grades with Autism Spectrum Disorders. She worked for
nearly four years as the Inclusion Facilitator for ABC Unified
School District supporting teachers and paraprofessionals develop
appropriate and helpful strategies for working with students with
Autism Spectrum Disorders and other behavioral or physical
difficulties. Before moving to the La Mirada and Cerritos area she
worked for LAUSD for seven years as Special Day Class teacher
and two years as Special Education Bridge Coordinator at Los
Angeles High School. She began her teaching career at a NonPublic School in Glendale teaching and behaviorally supporting
students with more profound and severe disabilities for nearly two
years. She is a Behavior Intervention Case Manager and has her
Master‟s degree in Special Education.

waste of time. At youth group Scott encountered caring, authentic
people his own age who strived every day to BE THE GOOD NEWS.
Scott fell in love with the Catholic faith. Scott has served as a
Youth Minister, a Catholic High School Teacher, and a Director of
Campus Ministry and has lead numerous retreats for all ages in
both the school and parish setting across the diocese. Scott has,

Fr. Jesus Rangel
iglesia!
