Once they had visited the sites of Turespaña and the Autonomous Region of Madrid, they progressed to Madrid 2016, the promotional stand for the capital's bid to host the 2016 Olympics, where they were fully briefed by the voluntary workers attending. Then came the turn for Asturias, where they received a warm welcome and a glass of cider, Cantabria, where they were invited inside a replica of a pre-historic cave, Castile and Leon, Extremadura and Castile-La Mancha. The final point in their itinerary of the different Spanish official delegations was Navarre, which offered them an innovative virtual "encierro" or bull run in the area devoted to the San Fermín festival. Continued from pg.1 With their presence at the Trade Fair, Their Royal Highnesses displayed their unconditional support for the tourist industry and for the fantastic efforts that all the exhibitors, public agencies and private enterprises alike, are making to fuel further development in the industry, which is crucial for many national economies including Spain. The Prince and Princess also noted the exciting times for the Fair, which keeps going strong in this edition despite the global financial situation. After the traditional reception with numerous business and institutional representati- INTERNATIONAL OFFER In the international area of the Fair, which has seen a substantial increase this year and currently accounts for 50% of the offer, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia conversed with official delegates from a number of tourist destinations, who introduced them to the new developments in their countries. These included consolidated markets such as Uruguay, Colombia and Honduras, and emerging markets such as Australia, India and Ethiopia, where they had a chance to see the rich traditonal costumes, as well as the music and craftwork on display in these lively stands. Another of the tour highlights was the visit to the site of Alcoy -a town in the province of Alicante- located in the Ifema Central Avenue, where a demonstration of the town's procession of the Three Wise Men was put on show, an unexpected treat of colour and tradition. The other key pillar of the International Tourism Trade Fair, the business community, also aroused the interest of the Prince and Princess, whose visit was a token of their support to the companies in the tourist industry for the outstanding efforts they are making in the current financial situation. As a reflection of the wide and diverse offer of Fitur, they visited a number of stands including MSC Cruises, Transhotel Group, and those of important hotel chains such as Sol Meliá, Grupo Piñero, NH Hotels, Zenit Hotels, Confortel, AC Hotels, Husa Hotels and Fuerte Hotels No tour would have been complete without a visit to the most prominent and forwardlooking projects currently underway in Spain, such as the new rail-transport infrastructures and the international cultural projects, or without a visit to the different media representatives. Accordingly, one of their stopovers was at the Adif stand, where they were welcomed by the Minister for De- velopment Magdalena Ávarez, who showed them first-hand the future of Spanish highspeed trains (AVE). The last stage of their visit was the stand of the Spanish Federation of Tourism Writers and Journalists (Fepet), which encompasses the offers of the thirteen Spanish cities that have placed a bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2016 in what constitutes a major project for the international promotion of Spain in terms of culture and tourism. ● ALL DAY YESTERDAY and especially today, a full representation of countries will pass through the Ifema Press room to present all their new offers to numerous accredited journalists. Just like each year, FITUR offers all foreign exhibitors the possibility of using their press installations for informative purposes. Located on the first floor of the South Convention Centre, yesterday the press centre offered presentations by Colombia and Georgia. The press conference by Colombia allowed its representatives to present a study by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) of this South-American country as well as all the main highpoints of its offer, including bird-watching tourism and cruises, without forgetting its rich folklore. At the same time, the presentation also included representatives of Avianca, the flagship airline which has come to FITUR to present, among other aspects, an important renovation of its fleet and equipment, as well as new routes between Spanish and Colombian cities. The representatives of Georgia took advantage of the occasion to provide general information about its tourism offer as this is the first edition of FITUR where this country is present and it is interested in publicising and promoting its products. Today, the Ifema Press room will be bustling with frantic activity with the programming of various press conferences by the official representatives of Uruguay (10 am) and Bosnia and Herzegovina, another country attending the Trade Fair for the first time (11 am); Mozambique, which returns after several years (12 midday); Bolivia (1 pm), and later in the afternoon, Central America, seeking to promote its destinations and the collection of funds for Fedecatur (4 pm). Finally, the Dominican Republic will be present at 6 pm. ● t FITURTECH 09, the forum in which the la- test trends in new technologies used in the tourism industry are analysed, opened yesterday with an interesting day in which social networks were the focus. One of the consequences of the spread of the web 2.0 among companies within the tourism industry has been the development 4 of social networks with the aim of establishing closer relations with internal and external customers and building loyalty. To discuss the phenomenon, Fiturtech brought together Tirso Maldonado of Socialtec, Victor Mayans of Artiem Hotels and Javier García Cuenca of Magic Costablanca, with Pedro Jareño of Minube acting as moderator. All the participants agreed that a new, more open scenario has emerged, with increasingly experienced customers whose primary interest is in experiences. It is precisely due to this demand, they noted, that the need arises to create environments where customers can post opinions and holiday stories before, during and after their trip or their stay in a hotel. Businesses stand to gain from the fact that these opinions may serve to promote a given product. The day ended with the presentation of the Best SEO Europe Award to Magic Costa Blanca. The topic for today at Fiturtech 09 is marketing using social media with video and the relationship with mobile technology, with a debate on the relevance of audiovisual materials in the tourism industry. In today's world, new technologies are a key ally for tourist businesses. Organised by the Diálogo Mediterráneo magazine, this edition focused on the current role of Tunisia in tourism and, as in the past, it has gathered profes- sionals and businesspeople from the tourist sector of countries on both sides of the Mediterranean. During the different industry conferences, Roger Torné, partner of the SCA Group, made an analysis of the current tourist situation in Tunisia. Robert Lanquar, Director of the University of Córdoba’s European Mediterranean Challenge, focused his participation on the cooperation between the Mediterranean countries; coinciding with the organising parties’ opinion, which explained that factors such as the growth of tourism in this region or the increase in migratory flow, make international cooperation increasingly more necessary. Health and fitness tourism as an investment for change was the theme discussed at the final seminar. This already widely established conference, which was brought to a close by a round-table in which the remaining speakers took part (Pedro Martínez Seiquer -Chairman of the Forum- and Amina Mkada –Director for Spain and Portugal-) will continue to improve information and the promotion of tourism on all levels of the Mediterranean countries. ● JORNADAS SMX TRAVEL@FITUR 2009 SMX TRAVEL@FITUR 2009 SEMINARS EN LA TARDE DE AYER COMENZARON las jornadas SMX Travel@Fitur 2009 con la presentación de las mismas por Tomy Lorsch y Rafael Fernández Tamames, de Search Marketing Expo España e Iberoamérica.
