VIRTUS TRAINING All who teach or volunteer at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross are required to attend the VIRTUS: Protecting God's Children training session. The session is prevention and awareness training at the parish level for adults called "Protecting God's Children," and administered by the Catholic Risk Retention Group under an umbrella called VIRTUS - consists of classroom presentations, printed materials and videotapes that will focus on the prevention of abuse and the protection of children. After you attend the session, you will receive a certificate, which will be kept on file in the Parish Office. You only need to attend this training once; you do not need to attend each year. AUGUST 21, 2016 Cathedral Cares about your health Dangerous Food Safety Mistakes Sometimes a simple mistake can have grave consequences. What may seem like a small food safety mistake can cause serious illness with long-term consequences. When it comes to some germs, such as Salmonella, all it takes is 15 to 20 cells in undercooked food to cause food poisoning. Here are some common food safety mistakes that have been proven to cause serious illness. The Order of Malta Boston Auxiliary will lead Malta Walks on the following upcoming evenings at 6.30 pm: Friday August 26 and September 14 & 28 Participants go out from the Cathedral’s Deacon Rosa Room, distribute critical resources including food and clothes and, as Pope Francis challenges the Church, engage those who the program serves. Please meet in the Parish Hall and enter via the Union Park Street entrance. Mistake #1: Tasting food to see if it’s still good. Why: You can’t taste (or smell or see) the bacteria that cause food poisoning. Solution: Throw food out before harmful bacteria grows YOUTH GROUP Rediscover your FAITH Mistake #2: Putting cooked meat back on a plate that held raw meat. Why Germs from the raw meat can spread to the cooked meat. Solution: Always use separate plates for raw meat and cooked meat, seafood and poultry Mistake #3: Thawing food on the counter or marinating on counter Why: Harmful germs can multiply extremely rapidly at room temperature. Solution: thaw food safety in the refrigerator or cold water Mistake #4 Washing meat or poultr y Why: Washing raw meat or poultry can spread bacteria to your sink counter tops and other surfaces in kitchen Solution: Don’t wash meat, poultry or eggs Mistake #5 Letting food cool befor e placing in refrigerator. Why: Illness causing bacteria can grow in perishable foods within two hours unless you refrigerate them Solution: Refrigerate perishable foods within 2 hours with in one hour if temp is over 90 degrees Mistake #6: Eating r aw cookie dough (or other foods with uncooked eggs) Why: uncooked eggs may contain salmonella or other harmful bacteria Solution: Always cook eggs thoroughly. Avoid foods that contain raw or under cooked eggs Mistake #7: Under cooking meat, poultr y, seafood, or eggs Why: Cooked food is safe only after it’s been cooked to a high temperature to kill harmful bacteria Solution: Use a safe Minimum es chart and food thermometer Mistake #8: Not washing your hands. Why Germs on your hands can contaminate the food that you or others eat.
