It is hard to believe that it
is the middle of Spring and
almost the end of the school
year. It has been a year full
of learning for students and staff!
LCAP is in the developmental stages
following input from meetings held with
all stakeholders. Thank you for your
input and engagement. If you have not
already, you may complete the LCAP
survey on our website until May 18th.
Students in grades 3-8 are taking the
Spring Test, now through May 20th.
With the addition of five chrome book
carts, the computer-based testing is running efficiently. Students are engaged
and familiar with the online testing
tools. It is important to minimize
disruptions or pulling students
out of school during the testing
periods.
We are offering a two-week Summer
School program, June 13-24. Teachers
will recommend students who will participate in order to enhance ELA/ELD
and Math skills. Please contact Mr. Jennings with questions about Summer
School.
Open House will take place on May
18th. Teachers will share with parents
the outstanding work their children have
been doing. Don’t miss this great opportunity to visit your child’s classroom and
celebrate his/her success! Also, the
Book Fair will be open the week of May
16th.
Parents, teachers, and community
members, thank you for your continuous
support of and attendance at our students’ extracurricular activities. Baseball
and softball games are going on now.
Thank you for making the 8th grade tritip lunch fundraiser a success on April
10th!
On April 14th, students in grades K-5
attended a motivational assembly
through our PBIS program. The Patriot
Ticket Store is now open twice a month,
on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the
month. Our K-8 students are familiar
with and continuing to learn the five
school-wide expectations: 1) Safe, 2)
Respectful, 3) Responsible, 4) Prepared
and 5) Follow Directions.
Thank you to the parents who participated in the computer literacy workshops. These parents received a Certificate of Completion at the last class on
April 13th. Our next Parent Workshop
will take place on May 25th in the cafeteria.
On April 16th, 25 middle school students participated in the Math Field Day
Competition at Fresno State University.
Mr. Marquez and these students prepared for the event before school, after
school, and even on weekends. Because
of their dedication, our WC Middle
School students took first place for the
Small Schools Division. Congratulations,
Patriots, on this great accomplishment
and success! Congratulations, too, to
Alison Romero in Mrs. Barker’s 5th
grade class for winning first place in the
Easton Lions Club Flag Day Poster Contest. He was honored by the Lions Club
on April 18th.
Especially during testing weeks, Students must arrive to school on time everyday
and complete the full instructional day. If
possible, schedule appointments at times
that do not interfere with the testing
schedule. Every Minute Counts!
Teacher and staff appreciation weeks
are coming in May. I want to thank all
teachers and staff for their hard work

Es difícil creer que estamos a
la mitad de la primavera y
casi al final del año. Ha sido
un año lleno de aprendizaje para los estudiantes y los empleados.
LCAP está en etapas de desarrollo siguiendo el aporte de las reuniones llevadas a
cabo con las personas interesadas en la
escuela. Muchas gracias por sus aportes y
participación. Si todavía no lo han hecho,
pueden completar la encuesta LCAP en
línea hasta el 18 de mayo.
Los estudiantes en grados 3-8 están tomando el Examen de Primavera, desde
ahora hasta el 20 de mayo. Con la añadidura de cinco carros “Chrome book”, la
evaluación basada en computación está
siendo administrada con eficiencia. Los
estudiantes están participando y están familiarizados con las herramientas de evaluación en línea. Es importante minimizar interrupciones o las salidas de
los estudiantes de la escuela durante
los periodos de exámenes.
Estamos ofreciendo un programa de Escuela de Verano de dos semanas, del 13 al

maestros van a compartir con los padres el
sobresaliente trabajo que los niños han
estado haciendo. No se pierdan esta gran
oportunidad de visitar el salón de sus niños
y de celebrar su éxito. También la Feria de
Libros comenzará el 16 de mayo.
El 16 de abril, 25 estudiantes de la escuela
intermedia participaron en la Competencia del Día de Matemáticas de la Universidad Estatal de Fresno. El Sr. Márquez y
estos estudiantes se prepararon para el
evento antes de la escuela, después de la
escuela y aun los fines de semana. Gracias
a su dedicación, nuestros estudiantes de la
Escuela Intermedia WC ganaron el primer
lugar en la División de Escuelas Pequeñas.
Felicidades Patriotas por este gran logro y
éxito. Felicidades también a Alison
Romero en la clase del 5º grado de la Sra.
Barker por ganar el primer lugar en el
Concurso de Pósteres del Día de la Bandera del Club de Leones de Easton. Fue
honrado por el Club de Leones el 18 de
abril.
A los padres, maestros y miembros de la
comunidad, quiero darles las gracias por
su continuo apoyo y su asistencia en nuestras actividades extracurriculares. Los
juegos de béisbol y softball están sucediendo ahora. Muchas gracias por hacer de la
recaudación de fondos del 8º grado un
gran éxito el 10 de abril.
El 14 de abril, los estudiantes en grados K
-5 asistieron a una asamblea motivacional
del programa PBIS. La tienda “Patriota
Ticket” ahora se abre dos veces al mes, el
1º y el 3º jueves de cada mes. Nuestros
estudiantes K-8 están familiarizados con
las cinco expectativas de la escuela en general y siguen aprendiendo al respecto: Sé
1) Seguro, 2) Respetuoso, 3) Responsable,
4) Preparado y 5) Sigue Direcciones.
Muchas gracias a los padres que participaron en los talleres de computación.
Estos padres recibieron un Certificado de
Participación en la última clase del 13 de
abril. Nuestro próximo Taller de Padres
Especialmente durante las semanas de

C LASSROOM N EWS
Kindergarten, (Mrs. Davis and
Mr. Schaffer): It is hard to believe it
is the beginning of May! The students
have really shown a lot of growth since
the beginning of the year! Many are
reading and writing and are ready for
first grade. Thank you for all your help
and support in making your child’s year
in kindergarten a success.
The last theme in our Language Arts
program is A World of Animals and we
will be culminating it with a field trip
to the zoo. Our zoo trip will be Friday,
May 27th; we will send more information home as we get closer to the
date.
Please join us May 18th for Open
House. The Kindergarten end-of-theyear program will be Wednesday, June
8th at 9:30 in the morning. Please save
that date –you won’t want to miss it!
First Grade, (Mrs. Dack and Mrs.
Pallas): The first graders will perform
three folk dances on May Day, Saturday, May 7th at John Ventura Stadium,
so watch for details and come join us!
The new theme in reading is We Can
Do It! The stories tell about characters
who learn to do new things. Phonics
skills include r controlled vowels, (ar,
er, or, ir and ur as in star, bird, and
burn). We are also reading about our
solar system, the stars, and other objects in space. We will take a trip to the
Planetarium at Fresno State later in the
month. Go outside with your child and
look at the moon and stars. And keep
reading at home. That is the best way
to become a good reader.
In Math we will continue to tell time
to the hour and half-hour, as well as
adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. Thank you for all your support!
Second Grade, (Mrs. Garcia and
Mrs. Doyle): Although the year is
winding down, Second Grade is show-
ing no signs of stopping! In Math we
have been focusing on time, money,
and picture and bar graphs. We also
continue to review our addition and
subtractions standards using various
strategies.
In Language Arts we are beginning a
theme on family and we are working on
our writing skills. We are learning to
identify and use synonyms and antonyms, and we also are working with
prefixes and suffixes.
Reading skills are essential to every
subject, so please take time to read
with your child every night. You can
each take turns reading a page to keep
their interest up. Ask them questions
such as, who was the story about? What
happened at the beginning? Middle? End?
What was your favorite part? This will not
only help them with their reading fluency, but with their reading comprehension as well.
Please be sure to check your child’s
backpack regularly for any announcements or homework assignments.
Homework is due every Friday, so the
students have the entire week to complete it. Thank you for your help!
Third Grade, (Ms. Espinosa): The
year is almost at an end. It has been
wonderful! Your students have worked
hard all year long and did their very
best on the end-of-the-year state test in
April.
We are reading and learning about all
of Earth’s habitats and the life contained
in them. We recently visited the zoo
and participated in a wonderful science
lab about habitats. We are working on
dioramas of animal habitats. We are
writing personal narratives and informative reports about animals. We
are learning about geometry and fractions.
I thank all of you for the time with
your wonderful students; I have cherished it all. Good luck next year!
Fourth Grade, (Mr. Brotnov): First
off, a big THANK YOU to the 12 parents who went with us to the San Juan
Bautista Mission field trip. It was a
great experience for the kids. They had
a chance to see the mission and the surrounding buildings, including a workshop, a hotel, and different rooms within the mission itself. With phones at the
ready, the kids had a scavenger huntcertain things at the mission they had to
take pictures of. Things like a wreath
made of hair, an article of clothing, and
a map were among the items listed in
the challenge. The trip went very
smoothly, and our chaperones were
one of the reasons it did.
Meanwhile, the 4th graders are dealing with measurement, fractions, how
California became a state, and some
new stories. All the kids have done a
good job getting library cards and
books, so keep up with the reading!
Fifth Grade, (Mrs. Barker and
Mrs. Hawkins): Wow! This year is
flying by! Congratulations
to Alison Romero for winning the Lion’s Club poster
contest from Washington
Colony. His poster showed
he is proud to live in the
U.S.A. because of our armed forces
that protect us.
We will spend the remainder of the
year reviewing what we have learned
and putting all our new skills into practice in Reading and Math. In History
we will cover the Constitution and
Westward Expansion. Science will find
us heading into outer space and studying the stars and planets.

Kindergarten, (Sra. Davis y Sr.
Schaffer): ¡Es difícil creer que es el principio de mayo! Los estudiantes han mostrado mucho crecimiento desde el inicio
del año. Muchos están escribiendo, leyendo y están listos para el primer grado.
Muchas gracias por toda su ayuda y apoyo
en hacer del año de su estudiante en el
kindergarten un éxito.
El último tema en nuestro programa de
Artes y Lenguaje es Un Mundo de Animales
y vamos a culminar con un viaje al zoológico. Nuestro viaje al zoológico será el
viernes 27 de mayo; vamos a mandar más
información a la casa cuando se acerque la
fecha.
Por favor únanse a nosotros el 18 de
mayo para la Casa Abierta. El programa
del final de año del Kindergarten será el
miércoles 8 de junio a las 9:30 en la mañana. Por favor aparten el día –no se lo quieren perder.
Primer Grado, (Sra. Dack y Sra. Pallas): Los niños del primer grado van a
presentar tres bailes folclóricos el Día de
Mayo, el 7 de mayo en el Estadio John

El tema nuevo en lectura es ¡Lo Podemos
Hacer! Las historias nos cuentan sobre

sobre nuestro Sistema Solar, las estrellas y
otros objetos en el espacio. Vamos a ir al

leyendo en la casa. Esa es la mejor manera
de ser un buen lector.
En matemáticas vamos a seguir diciendo

Segundo Grado, (Sra. Garcia y Sra.
Doyle): A pesar que el año está terminando, el Segundo Grado no está mos-
trando señales de querer detenerse. En
matemáticas nos hemos estado enfocando
en decir la hora, contar dinero y en fotos y
gráficas. También seguimos revisando
nuestras normas de suma y resta usando
varias estrategias.
En Artes del Lenguaje estamos aprendiendo un tema sobre la familia y estamos
trabajando en nuestras habilidades de escritura. Estamos aprendiendo a identificar
y usar sinónimos y antónimos y también
estamos trabajando con prefijos y sufijos.
Las habilidades de lectura son esenciales
para todas las materias, así que por favor
tomen tiempo de leer con su niño cada
noche. Cada uno de ustedes puede tomar

Tercer Grado, (Srta. Espinosa): El
año está por terminar. Ha sido maravilloso. Sus estudiantes han trabajado arduamente todo el año e hicieron lo mejor que
pudieron en su examen de final de año en
abril.
Estamos leyendo y aprendiendo sobre los
hábitats de la tierra y sobre la vida contenida en ellos. Acabamos de ir al zoológico
y participamos en un maravilloso laboratorio de ciencias sobre hábitats. Estamos
viendo dioramas sobre hábitats de animales. Estamos escribiendo narraciones personales y reportes informativos sobre animales. Estamos aprendiendo sobre geometría y fracciones.
Les agradezco por el tiempo que he pasado con sus maravillosos estudiantes; me
encantan todos. Buena suerte el próximo
año.
Cuarto Grado, (Sr. Brotnov): Primero, MUCHAS GRACIAS a los 12 padres
que fueron con nosotros a la excursión de
la Misión San Juan Bautista. Fue una gran
experiencia para los niños. Tuvieron la
oportunidad de ver la misión y los edificios circunvecinos, incluyendo un taller,
un hotel y diferentes salones dentro de la
misión. Con teléfonos listos, los niños
tuvieron una búsqueda para encontrar
algunas cosas en la misión a los cuales le
tenían que tomar una foto. Cosas como
algo hecho de cabello, una ropa y un mapa
estuvieron entre las cosas enlistadas en el
desafío. El viaje fue muy bueno y los chaperones fueron una de las razones por las
cuales el viaje fue un éxito.
Entre tanto los niños del 4º están lidiando con medidas, fracciones y cómo California llegó a ser un estado y algunas otras
historias. Todos los niños han hecho un
buen trabajo obteniendo sus tarjetas de
biblioteca y prestando libros. Sigan leyendo.
Quinto Grado, (Sra. Barker y Sra.
Hawkins): ¡Caramba! Este año va volando. Felicidades a Alison Romero por ganar el concurso
de pósteres del Club de Leones de Washington Colony.
Su poster mostró que él está
orgulloso de vivir en los Estados Unidos de América porque nuestras
fuerzas armadas nos protegen.
Vamos a pasar el resto del año repasando
lo que hemos aprendido y practicando
nuestras habilidades nuevas en Lectura y
Matemáticas. En Historia vamos a cubrir
la Constitución y la Expansión del Oeste.
La ciencias nos van a encontrar en el espacio sideral y estudiando las estrellas y los
planetas.

Seventh Grade, (Mrs. Huffmon):
Seventh graders have been working
hard all year, and it has been a joy to
watch them mature and grow academically. Continue reading the following
journal excerpts to better understand
the daily activities that the students
enjoy.
Damian Baltazar-In Math we are using
Algebra tiles. It is pretty easy to do.
Also, we do warm-ups before doing
other math problems.
Erika Abarca-In English we are utilizing
our knowledge of root words to define
and spell words. We are also learning
how to write a narrative with a beginning, middle, climax, and end. We are
also reading “The Richer, the Poorer.”
Alexis Quiroz-In Social Studies we just
finished up our G.R.A.P.E.S. presentation about Japan. We are now working
on “The Early Middle Ages.” Some important people in that time were Clovis, Charles Martel, Charlemagne,
Gregory VII, and Henry IV.
B AND N OTES
The Middle School Advanced Band performed at the CMEA festival on April 15th.
They had a great day performing, learning
from the judges, and listening to other
schools perform as well. Great job, Advanced Band!
Both the 5th grade beginning band and the
advanced band will have their final performance at Fine Arts Night, Thursday, May
19th at 6:30 pm at the WUHS Auditorium.
We will also present awards and feature
student art work. Please join us for a celebration of the arts, featuring the 5th grade
beginning band, the middle school concert
band, and small ensembles.
Ivan Rivera-In Science we’re learning
about the rock cycle. There are three
major rocks that can be formed through
this process-igneous, sedimentary, and
metamorphic rock.
Skyler Loera-In Sports AD class we’re
doing posters and helping out with
sports equipment.
Alexis Quiroz-In Reading Lab we read
our Accelerated Reader books. A new
thing we do now is write a summary on
what we read that day. We also might
take AR quizzes on the computer.
Cesar Delgado-In AVID we are learning
how to take Cornell Notes, and we’re
fixing our binders to be organized. Finally, we cleaned out our backpacks to
take out the stuff we don’t need.
Javier Petatan-In Science Projects class
we just finished our paper airplanes.
Now it’s time to do the egg drop project. After that, we are doing a solar
oven.
Nathalie Martinez-In PE we are running
a mile every Tuesday. After we run, we
are playing kickball. Our PE teacher
gives us a paper to write what we
learned in order to keep us on track.
Frida Garcia-In Problem Solving we
were doing the handshaking problem.
We had to find the formula to the problem.
Karen Muro-In Art we are working on
drawing animals. I like it because we
get to use pastels. I’m not really that
bad, either.
Mauricio Rodriguez-In Band Mrs. Ervin
tells us about upcoming events. Then
we do warm-ups for practice. Lastly,
we play a lot of songs for the concerts.
Alena Armenta-In Leadership we are
preparing for the mother/son dance
and setting it up. We are also trying to
get service hours. In addition, we are
working on our trimester project.
Matthew Candray-In Technology we’re
doing Typing Club. We’re also doing
CS First. It is a coding program. We
also do Scratch, which is a coding making website.
Marshall Ovalle-In Intervention we just
finished reading an article. We are also
doing a lot of reading and writing.

On Saturday, April 16th the Washington Colony Math Club competed in
Fresno State’s Annual Math Field Day Competition. A team of 20 competed
in three different events. Each event was two hours long and, following the
competition, the students enjoyed the activities and food at Fresno State’s
Vintage Days

acabamos nuestros aviones de papel. Ahora
es tiempo de hacer nuestro proyecto de
votar el huevo. Después de eso vamos a
hacer un horno solar.
Nathalie Martinez-En Educación Física estamos corriendo una milla cada martes. Después de correr jugamos kickball. Nuestro
maestro de Educación Física nos da papel
para escribir sobre lo que aprendemos para
mantenernos vigentes.

La Banda de Escuela Intermedia Avanzada se
presentó en el festival CMEA el 15 de abril.
Tuvieron un gran día tocando, aprendiendo de
los jueces y escuchando a otras escuelas. ¡Buen
trabajo Banda Avanzada de Escuela Intermedia!
La banda principiante del 5º y la banda avanzada van a tener su presentación final la Noche
de Bellas Artes, el jueves 19 de mayo a las
6:30 pm en el Auditorio de la ESWU. También vamos a presentar premios y a presentar
el trabajo de los estudiantes. Por favor vengan
a la celebración de las artes, presentando a la
banda del 5º, el concierto de la banda de la
escuela intermedia y los grupos pequeños.
Frida Garcia-En Solución de Problemas estamos haciendo problemas de saludo de manos. Tenemos que encontrar la fórmula del
problema.
Karen Muro-En Arte estamos trabajando en
dibujar animales. Me gusta porque usamos
los colores pasteles. Mi trabajo es bueno.
Mauricio Rodriguez-En Banda la Sra. Ervin
nos dice sobre los eventos que están por
venir. Luego hacemos calentamientos para
la práctica. Por último, tocamos las canciones para los conciertos.
Alena Armenta-En Liderazgo nos estamos
preparando para el baile de madres e hijos y
en prepararlo. También estamos tratando de
obtener horas de servicio. Además, estamos
trabajando en el proyecto de trimestre.

haciendo el Club de Mecanografía. También
estamos haciendo el “CS First”. Es un programa de codificación. También hacemos
“Scratch” el cual es codificación para hacer
páginas web.

leer un artículo. También estamos leyendo y
escribiendo.

El sábado 16 de abril el Club de Matemáticas de Washington Colony compitió en la Competencia de Día de Campo de Matemáticas anual de la Universidad Estatal de Fresno. Un equipo de 20 compitió en tres eventos diferentes.
Cada evento duro dos horas y después de la competencia, los estudiantes disfrutaron las actividades y la comida en los Días “Vintage” del Festival de la
Universidad Estatal de Fresno. Este año los niños del 6º y 7º grado se les unieron, el equipo de
Washington Colony recibió el
primer lugar en la
división de escuela pequeña. ¡Buen

On Saturday, May 7, 2016,
Washington Union High
School, Easton Lions Club,
and the community of Easton
will again host the annual
May Day events. This will be
held at 5:00 pm at the John
Ventura Stadium.
This year we have a big
group of participants. Many
of our own Washington
Colony Students will be
participating, taking part in
the ceremony. Our first
grade students will be performing three folk dances.
Some of our middle school
students will also be performing dances. The culmi-
nating event is the wrapping
of the Maypole by our second and third grade girls.
There will be vendor and
food booths available. Please
come out and join us in supporting our students and this
wonderful family event!
R OCKET C LUB
The fifth graders have been putting their finishing
touches on their self-designed rockets, and will fly
them soon. Next on deck is another group of fourth
graders, including a young lady whose rocket was
eaten by a tree out on the play yard. Let’s hope that
doesn’t happen again!
May 20-22, 2016, is Dairy-Aire, a big rocket festival
out in Caruthers. Are you interested in seeing big
rockets fly? Really big rockets? Really, really big
rockets that go really, really high? See Mr. B for more
details about this exciting event!

El sábado 7 de mayo del
2016, la Escuela Secundaria
Washington Union, el Club
de Leones de Easton, y la
comunidad de Easton van a
llevar a cabo los eventos
anuales del Día de Mayo.
Este será llevado a cabo a las
5:00 pm en el Estadio John
Ventura.
Este año tenemos un grupo
grandes de participantes.
Muchos de nuestros Estudiantes de Washington Colony van a estar participando,
tomando parte en la ceremonia. Nuestros estudiantes del
primer grado van a llevar a
cabo tres bailes folclóricos.
Algunos de nuestros estu-
diantes de la escuela intermedia también van a estar bailando. El evento culminante
es envolver el Palo de Mayo
que será llevado a cabo por
las niñas del segundo y tercer
grado.
Van a ver negocios que venden comida. Por favor venga
y apoyen a sus estudiantes en
este evento familiar.
C LUB DE C OHETE
Los niños del quinto grado han estado poniendo los últimos toques en sus cohetes, y los van a volar pronto. Lo
siguiente en la lista es nuestro grupo de niños del cuarto
grado, incluyendo una jovencita cuyo cohete fue comido
por un árbol del patio. ¡Esperamos que eso no suceda
otra vez!
El 20-22 de mayo, 2016, es un festival de cohetes grandes llamado “Dairy-Aire”, en Caruthers. ¿Estas interesado en ver cohetes grandes volar? Cohetes súper grandes
