Dear HPS Educators, Students, Families, Partners and Friends, I am pleased to report that our focus on early education as a critical component of the Turnaround Plan for Holyoke is beginning to take shape. The pre‐school programs being run across the district in partnership with Valley Opportunity Council and Head Start are fully enrolled and our Kindergarten Curriculum Research Team presented their findings to stakeholders from across the district last Friday morning. The Kindergarten Curriculum Research Team includes the following members: PJ Westcott, Suzanne Herbert, Amy Sturmer, Nicole Fisher, Sasha Rojas, Katie Engelson, Jenn Consedine, Gabrielle Agron. The work of this group to explore options for our youngest learners and their teachers has been rich and thoughtful. They’ve spent time in kindergarten classrooms in Holyoke and Boston and have researched many approaches to kindergarten instruction. Thanks to their leadership, we will move next year to the Focus on K2 curriculum for all kindergarten classrooms in the district. This curriculum shifts our thinking from seeing play as separate from learning, to a critical part of the learning process for young children. This work will shift our practices from being primarily focused on content and teacher directed instruction to child initiated, hands‐on, integrated experiences; engaging authentic discourse between students and teachers, and planning based on children’s interests and skills. With this new curriculum, kindergarten classrooms in Holyoke are filled with purposeful, engaging and well‐
structured activities that are fun and designed to develop each unique child. I am excited to support our kindergarten educators as they do the work to adopt this new model for learning in Holyoke. Martin Luther King’s Birthday Observed Morgan School families: visit the Morgan School web page for Morgan calendar. INTRODUCING HOLYOKE HIGH’S DIRECTOR OF CLIMATE AND STUDENT SUPPORT: Luke Woodward has recently started as Holyoke High’s Director of Climate and Student Support. Holyoke High School has joined Morgan, Kelly, Lawrence and Peck in the Full Service Community School pilot. The FSCS pilot is an effort to utilize data and school/partner resources to focus on student support, social‐emotional learning and culture and climate. In Luke's new role, he will be leading the development of school climate efforts, including the expansion of the Restorative Justice Program, the redesign of the Student Support Room, and the alignment of professional development around social‐
emotional learning and culture/climate. Luke was previously working at Holyoke High as the Restorative Justice Coordinator through River Valley Counseling Center. Welcome Luke! STAFF OPPORTUNITIES: HPS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TASK FORCE 2016 The Office of Professional Learning (OPL) is forming a Professional Learning Task Force, comprised of a small cross section of dedicated Holyoke Public School Educators, to begin the work of strengthening Professional Learning systems district‐
wide, in line with the Turnaround Plan. The Task Force will meet several times from now until June, with direction going forward determined at that time. Holyoke Educators will receive an email directly with information on how to apply. Additionally, any questions can be directed to Pema Latshang, Director of Professional Learning and Educator Leadership, at [email protected]. 2 LOOKING FOR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A TALENTED TEACHER‐LEADER TO COORDINATE THE APRIL ACCELERATION ACADEMY! As outlined in the Turnaround Plan, we will be holding an Acceleration Academy during April break. We are looking for a talented, dedicated and organized teacher‐leader to help coordinate this work. It will be a stipended role (posting to follow) as it will have a significant time demand. To that end we are looking for someone who has the time and capacity. JANUARY 19TH ‐ ENGAGING ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS In collaboration with Representative Aaron Vega, Holyoke Public Schools would like to invite you to a community partner meeting to discuss HPS's plans to expand the school day (as detailed in the HPS Turnaround Plan) for elementary and middle schools and our mutual desire to engage community partners in supporting a strong full school day, with a particular emphasis on engaging enrichment opportunities for students in grades K‐8. We had more than 40 community members attend an initial meeting on Tues, Dec. 15th and there was a lot of interest in a follow‐up meeting. Accordingly, we are hosting a second meeting on Tues, Jan. 19th from 5:30‐7:00pm at the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center, 100 Bigelow St, Holyoke, MA 01040. 5:30 – 6:00 PM ‐ Overview of HPS Full School Day (Intended for individuals or organizations that weren’t able to attend the 12/15 session and this is their first introduction to HPS’s plans to expand the school day for elementary and middle schools) 6:00 – 7:00 PM ‐ Making Plans to support HPS Full School Day (Intended for all individuals and organizations, as well as schools). Focus will be on understanding the levels of partnership and making connections /networking amidst organizations and potentially school representatives COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS The following students from Dean Technical High School were accepted to college and awarded merit scholariships: Edeni was accepted to the Elms college and offered a merit scholarship of $17,000 renewable every year. Raneisha was accepted to Becker college and offered a merit scholarship of $10,000 renewable every year. Both will be the first in their families to go to college. Congratulations girls. Left‐to‐right, Edeni (Health Services Shop) and Raneisha (Carpentry Shop) proudly display their notification letters. DEAN TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL CLOTHING DRIVE Dean launched a warm outerwear drive this week for students in need, who are underdressed for the weather. Dean welcomes your gently used sweatshirts, sweaters, jackets, coats, and other warm items. Please drop off your items at their Main Office. Contact Mrs. Carbone for more information at 534‐2071. 3 FEBRUARY 12TH ‐14TH HOLYOKE CANAL DISTRICT WINTER FESTIVAL This three‐day‐long festival is filled with winter‐themed activities for the whole family. FEBRUARY 26TH FRIENDS OF THE HOLYOKE PUBLIC SCHOOLS – ANNUAL FUNDRAISER The annual fundraising event held by the Friends of Holyoke Public Schools (HPS) will feature the lmprov Asylum on Friday, February 26th at the Log Cabin in Holyoke. Event tickets are available for purchase on their website http://www.friendshps.org. All money raised goes directly to providing new learning experiences in the arts and to support early literacy through their grants program. FHPS is a 501(c)(3) that seeks funding from many sources to support special learning opportunities for students in the Holyoke Public Schools. Most notably, FHPS has funded the Summer String Program since 2008, which allows students from our schools to attend camp for four weeks and be introduced to the violin and cello for free. Students also receive instruction in yoga, chorus and reading, and have field trips and performances at Western MA venues. FHPS also funded the following activities for HPS students: • Enchanted Circle Theater Storm Drain Art Project • Mass. Me complace informar que nuestro enfoque en la educación temprana como un componente crítico del plan de reestructuración de Holyoke está comenzando a tomar forma. En colaboración con el Representante Vega, a las Escuelas Públicas de Holyoke les gustaría invitarle a una reunión de socios de la comunidad para discutir los planes de las Escuelas Públicas de Holyoke para ampliar la jornada escolar (como se detalla en el plan de reestructuración de HPS) para las escuelas primarias e intermedias y nuestro mutuo deseo de comprometer los socios de la comunidad en el apoyo a una fuerte jornada escolar completa, con un énfasis particular en las oportunidades de enriquecimiento atractivos para los estudiantes en los grados K‐8. Tuvimos más de 40 miembros de la comunidad de asistencia en una reunión inicial el martes, 15 de diciembre y había una gran cantidad de interés en una reunión de seguimiento. CAMPAÑA DE RECOLECCIÓN DE ROPA EN LA ESCUELASECUNDARIA DEAN TÉCNICA Dean lanzó una campaña de ropa caliente esta semana para los estudiantes que lo necesitan, que están mal vestidos para el clima. 26 DE FEBRERO ‐ AMIGOS DE LAS ESCUELAS PÚBLICAS DE HOLYOKE – RECAUDACIÓN ANUAL DE FONDOS El evento de recaudación anual de fondos llevado a cabo por los Amigos de las Escuelas Públicas de Holyoke (HPS) contará con la improvisación Asylum el viernes 26 de febrero en el Log Cabin en Holyoke. FHPS es un 501(c) (3) que busca financiación de muchas fuentes para apoyar las oportunidades especiales de aprendizaje para los estudiantes de las Escuelas Públicas de Holyoke.
