San Antonio Lives Bilingual VOL.XXI • NUM 39 Immigration writing contest recognizes winning students By Lee Hurtado Since 2004, the law firm of De Mott, McChesney, Curtright and Armendariz (DMCA) has facilitated the San Antonio chapter of Celebrate America, a national writing contest for fifth-grade students sponsored by the American Immigration Council. Each year, the contest has continued to grow, and for the 2015-2016 school year, the program received nearly 100 entries. The contest – centered on the theme “Why I Am Glad America Is A Nation of Immigrants” - has allowed DMCA to share the message of immigration with new generations of students. “Our attorneys love the opportunity to speak with students around San Antonio about the importance of immigration,” says partner Lance Curtright. “We’re honored to participate in the contest and www.LaPrensaSA.com help carry it forward.” This year’s entries were judged by a panel representing education and media across San Antonio, including Christian Clark, senior program coordinator at the Institute of Texan Cultures; Steve Spriester, anchor at KSAT 12; Amy Thomas, attorney at DMCA; and Nina Duran, publisher of La Prensa. After reviewing the entries, they chose their top students for 2015-2016. In the private school category, Blessed Sacrament Catholic School (a perennial participant in the program) produced three winning entries from Martin Spears (first place), Fisher Kirby (second place) and Chiara Chavez (third place). For public schools, Aspen Sollars, from Steubing Ranch Elementary School, placed first. Mia Girela, from Bonham Academy, placed second, and Malena Earls, also from Steubing Ranch Elementary, placed See Contest on page 9 VIA launches new VIVA services around S.A.’s top destinations On Monday, VIA officially launched new service routes that will connect riders to top San Antonio destinations. VIA Metropolitan Transit introduced on Monday morning their new service line, VIVA, which will allow riders to visit places like the DoSeum to make their summer more entertaining. At hand to celebrate the milestone were President/CEO of VIA Jeffrey C. Arndt, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, DoSeum CEO Vanessa Lacoss Hurd and District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran. The routes will connect riders from historical places to art, dining and entertainment spots to learn more about what makes the city stand out from other popular locations in the country. In order to section the city correctly, the public transit organized three distinct routes: VIVA culture (route 11), VIVA missions (route 40) and VIVA centro (route 301). VIVA culture will travel from Southtown to the McNay Museum of Art all around South Broadway Street. The VIVA missions route will cover historical routes including the San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site, from the Alamo to Mission San Juan. The VIVA centro will travel into the core of San Antonio, from the Centro Plaza to Sunset Station. “This is indeed a great cultured corridor that goes from the South Side of San Antonio all the way to the museum... You cannot build a city that gives people the choice of urban life without a first-class transit system,” said Judge Wolff. “Creating VIVA is helping us build the urban life here See VIVA services on page 9 LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 2 SATX 8 de junio de 2016 Inner City Development Friendship Festival and street dance La festival de amistad y baile en la calle Free Admission July 9, 2016 Performances by: Grupo Cielo Pinata Protest Roy Garcia Band, DJ Gabriel and Danzavida De San Antonio 6 to 11:30 p.m. 1300 Chihuahua Music | Food | Beverages Games | Raffle | Street Dance Sponsored by: Sponsorship also provided by City of San Antonio District 5. Attempting to get rid of the behavior will lead to increased frustration for everyone involved. • However, it can help to remember that shadowing is being done for a reason, and understanding the underlying issues can help caregivers develop ways of interacting that can reduce behavior and/or its impact. • Here are some steps written for caregivers that can help: Understand that it is the disease, not the person, driving this behavior. • For someone living with Alzheimer’s disease in the middle stages, the world is an unfamiliar place, full of confusion and creating insecurity. Caregivers are a safe connection for the person in the midst of the unknown. Regardless of the trigger, the person is following the caregiver seeking safety. It’s important to provide reassurance, both verbally and physically. Get close and touch the person if that tends to be calming, and repeat that everything is OK, that you are both safe, etc. Look for pain or illness first. • Shadowing may occur or escalate if the person with dementia is in pain or sick, but is unable to talk about it directly. • Check to see if the person is experiencing: • Physical pain or discomfort. • Physical illness or an underlying medical problem. • Trouble with eyesight or hearing. • Even if the underlying issues do not seem to be related to pain or illness, there may be a medical issue that you cannot see, such as a urinary tract infection. Begin by checking in with the person’s doctor first. • Contact the doctor and get advice about next steps to take. • Ask about what you need to do immediately for the person to assist with the medical situation. If pain is not the primary issue, explore the person’s shadowing patterns to learn the triggers and underlying issues. • Examine the behavior to determine triggers. Do certain people, surroundings, or times of day lead to the start or an escalation of shadowing? • How long does the behavior last? • What seems to calm the person? Issues underlying shadowing may include: • Depression or anxiety. • Fear, including fear of being alone. • Boredom. • Feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, or upset due to failure when attempting a task. • Grief or loss. • Changes in routine. • Picking up on the feelings of others. Explore behavioral or psychological interventions. • Be sure that you look at your own feelings first. Try to remain calm and respond gently. • Speak reassuringly to the person, letting him or her know that you are together and safe. Use the same words or phrases repeatedly to help the person connect with what is being said. • Suggest doing something different together to help the person’s energy shift from shadowing to doing an activity together. Even giving the person some objects to fiddle with can help refocus the person. • Play some favorite music or a favorite movie for the person. • If person seems afraid to be left alone, you can try having him/her hold a familiar jacket or sweater of yours. This may help person feel secure when you are out of sight. • Once the person is settled, try setting a timer and hand it to the person, letting him or her know that you will be back when the timer goes off. Tips to avoid trigger situations in the future. • Be sure the person is getting enough exercise during the early hours of the day. • As difficult as it may be, make sure you take time for yourself away from the person with dementia. This will help the person get accustomed to being alone periodically. Be sure to ask others for help and accept help when it is offered. • Offer meaningful activities for the person that will keep him or her occupied, such as folding laundry or working on a puzzle. • Provide snacks of cereal or gum to allow the person to be occupied. Be sure that what you choose to offer does not pose a choking hazard. • Have a way to escape when needed, even if only for a short time. Have someone on hand — a neighbor or relative to help out briefly — or a room in the house to escape to. For example, to ensure the caregiver’s bathroom privacy, install a childproof doorknob on the door or engage the person in a favorite activity to keep him/her occupied.
