THE BAPTISM OF
THE LORD
January 10, 2016
Year
C
We are reminded that Jesus’ ministry began like ours: by his
baptism. When he came up out of the water, he was identified as
God’s own Son and filled with the Holy Spirit. That baptism
unleashed great power in his life that enabled him to fulfill his
messianic calling at great cost. Jesus’ relationship to God was
unique, but by our own baptism, we too are claimed as God’s own
and filled with the Spirit to accomplish whatever is asked of us.

Migration Week

National
US — National Migration Week 2016 was observed in the
United States last week with the theme, "A Stranger and You
Welcomed Me." The annual celebration provides an
opportunity to raise awareness about the hardships faced by
migrants, including children, refugees, and victims of human
trafficking.
The call to welcome the stranger plays an important role in the
lives of faithful Christians and has a particularly central place
in the Year of Mercy. "People often forget that the Holy
Family themselves were refugees fleeing into Egypt," said
Bishop Eusebio Elizondo, auxiliary bishop of Seattle and
chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic
Bishops' (USCCB) Committee on Migration. "Likewise,
refugees around the world, all of whom are extremely
vulnerable, are fleeing for their lives. As Catholics, we are
called to welcome and support these families who also need
our help."
As part of the 2016 National Migration Week celebration, the
USCCB established a small grant program that will provide
New lighting makes St. James Cathedral a
beacon in Seattle skyline
LOCAL — On the first evening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the exterior
of St. James Cathedral was bathed in new lighting.
“What better day, what better night, to tell the world that St. James
Cathedral is a place of mercy, a place where what Pope Francis calls a
‘revolution of tenderness’ is an ongoing, everyday thing,” Father Michael
G. Ryan, pastor of St. James, said in an email.
The lighting was officially unveiled Dec. 8 and the cathedral will be
illuminated from sunset to midnight each day, according to the St. James
website. The lights make St. James more visible in the Seattle skyline,
where it loomed over downtown a century ago, but over the years became
dwarfed by surrounding high-rise development.
“This project was more than about just showing off a beautiful building,”
Father Ryan said in an email. “It’s really more a statement of faith. I want
people to think of St. James Cathedral as a beacon of light in this
community: a place where people come to pray, to celebrate, to weep, to
rejoice, to serve,” he wrote.

I
n this Jubilee Year of
Mercy the liturgy today
invites each one of us to
renew ourselves as the
beloved sons and daughters of
God through the experience
of Jesus being baptized in the

In the voice that came down

His own baptism gave him
the certitude that He is the

His strength. His trust,

this understanding.
I am convinced that this is

same conviction of being, like
Jesus, loved by God. We, who
are baptized, receive this
precious gift: we are sons and
daughters of God. The joy of
knowing that we are beloved
by God should accompany
each and every one of our
actions.
Today is the last Sunday of
the Christmas Season, what
better way to conclude and
begin “Ordinary Time,” than
by renewing our strength in
our Lord. This will be the
secret of the days ahead of us:
God is with us and we are His
beloved.
Today the Holy Spirit is also
mentioned “descending upon
Jesus in bodily form like a
dove.” In the Old Testament
the dove is a symbol of new
beginnings (see. Gen. 1: 2 and
8: 8-12). There is an
interesting text from the

The Holy Spirit in the form of
a dove descends (hovers) on

with
love,
thus
establishing a new beginning.
The Catechism of the
Catholic Church explains it
with these terms: “The
Father’s voice responds to the
Son’s
acceptance,
proclaiming his entire delight
in his Son. The Spirit whom
Jesus possessed in fullness
from his conception comes to
‘rest on him.’ Jesus will be
the source of the Spirit for all
mankind. At his baptism ‘the
heavens were opened’ the
heavens that Adam’s sin had
closed and the waters were
sanctified by the descent of
Jesus and the Spirit, a prelude
to the new creation” (#536).
With this perspective, today’s
feast of the Baptism of the
Lord wants to recreate in us
that which makes our faith
unshakable: we are a new
creation and we are no longer
sojourners but beloved sons
and daughters with a mission
to accomplish.
In this year of mercy Pope
Francis suggests that we
should live our lives with the
attitudes of Jesus. Jesus who
is loved by His Father sees
Himself as being one with
God. Jesus thus calls us to be
like our Heavenly Father, too.
We cannot do it on our own;
only with Jesus will it be
possible. The water with
which we have been purified,
the baptism of salvation,
requires us to hold very
tightly to our faith… our
intimate friendship with the
Lord must constantly make us
feel beloved by Him. We
want to respond to that love
first and foremost, so we can
be merciful like the Father.

This one is a more interesting kind of a
challenge. But hey, I love a good challenge.
• Donate old or unused clothes to Goodwill,
a thrift store, or a homeless shelter.
• Start a jacket drive at your local parish or
with youth group.
• Pray for the virtue of modesty in your dress
and your actions, so you might reflect
Christ and give him glory in everything
you do.
• Go through your closet and simplify your
wardrobe (this one is especially tough just
because I’m a clothes addict).
• Offer to mend clothing for a local homeless
shelter.
• Go to your local GoodWill and buy clothes
off the rack and donate them to a homeless
shelter or give them to a person
experiencing homelessness on the street.
• This one is my favorite: go to local garage
sales, buy some clothes, and send all the
clothing to a foreign mission site.
Shelter the Homeless
We’ve all seen it, some of us maybe more
than others. I hope that seeing homelessness
affects all of us deeply — to see a fellow
human with no place to rest their head. Here
are some tips that can help you make a
difference in your city:
• Sign up with your local habitat for
humanity and dedicate one Saturday of the
month to help build houses for the less

“Buenos

pastores” en el que estoy
participando. En la primera Misa
Crismal que celebró el Papa
Francisco (28 de Marzo del
2013), desafió a los 1.600
sacerdotes presentes a acercar
el poder sanador de la gracia de
Dios a todas las personas
necesitadas, a estar cerca de
los marginados, y a ser
“pastores con olor a oveja”.
También les dijo que los
sacerdotes “que salen poco de
sí” porque se niegan a ser
mediadores entre Dios y los
hombres “se van convirtiendo,
poco a poco en intermediarios,
en gestores”. El programa de
“Buenos
líderes,
buenos
pastores” me está ayudando a
ser un mejor mediador, al darme
las herramientas que necesito.
Una vez más les agradezco y
les pido sus oraciones para que

Espíritu para toda la
humanidad.
Dios. Jesús entonces nos invita a ser
como nuestro Padre Celestial, también.
No podemos hacerlo solos; sólo con Jesús
es posible. El agua que nos ha purificado,
el bautismo de salvación, exige que nos
aferremos fuertemente a nuestra fe…
nuestra amistad íntima con el Señor debe
constantemente hacernos sentir amados
por Él. Queremos responder a ese amor
primero y primordialmente, para poder ser
misericordiosos como el Padre.

38th Annual Washington State March for Life,
January 19, 2016, at the state capital in Olympia
You can continue a celebration of life joining the 38th annual Washington
State March for Life. We march at Noon on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at the
state capitol in Olympia.
Every elected state official is invited to attend, and we encourage legislators who
stand with us for Life to speak to the crowd. Will you, your friends (or busload of
friends) be there for the noon hour to hear their hopeful messages for Life?
As you know, the fight for a voice for the vulnerable and the unborn is hard but
important work. This year the national March for Life theme is “Pro-Life and ProWoman Go Hand in Hand.” We are a people of hope. We want to bring about a
world where all people are seen for their infinite value and endless
possibilities.
Christmas Food Baskets
The Society of St. Vincent de
Paul would like to thank all who
donated food and money for the
Christmas baskets. Our parish did a fantastic
job of ensuring that the needy within our
community had wonderful Christmas dinners.
This year we were able to provide dinners for
43 families. Thank you to all who helped pack
and deliver the several boxes of food. Special
thanks to those who made the last-minute
donations as time was running out (you know
who you are). We couldn’t have done it without
your help!
On January 22, 2016, our nation will mark the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the
Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal throughout the U.S. Since that tragic
decision, more than 57 million children's lives have been lost to abortion, and many
suffer that loss -- often in silence. Join the U.S. bishops and thousands of Catholics
across the country in prayer with the annual novena 9 Days for Life from Saturday,
January 16, 2016 to Sunday, January 24, 2016. Pray for the respect and protection of all
human life with new intentions, brief reflections, and more each day. Download the
novena online, or participate through Facebook, email, text message or an app. Join at

better integrate the Church's teaching on migration into new or existing
programs, materials, events and other activities. Grant recipients will be
announced during National Migration Week.
The observance of National Migration Week began over 25 years ago by the
U.S. bishops to give Catholics an opportunity to take stock of the wide
diversity of peoples in the Church and the ministries serving them. The
week serves as both a time for prayer and action to try and ease the
struggles of immigrants, migrants and vulnerable populations coming to the
United States.
Dioceses across the country including Chicago, Illinois; Portland, Oregon;
Jackson, Mississippi; and Metuchen, New Jersey; have planned special
events and Masses throughout the week.
