CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS
The City Council is the policy making body for the City of South Gate. Residents and community members
are highly encouraged to participate in the Comments from the Audience portion of the meetings. Here you can
address any issue directly to the City Council and staff that is not listed on that meeting’s Agenda.
Meetings take place on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall’s Council Chambers.
COMMISSION FOR SOUTH GATE YOUTH
The Commission for South Gate Youth seeks to empower the youth by promoting and supporting high quality programs
and projects that address the needs of youth.
Meetings take place on the 1st Tuesday of every month, at 6:30 p.m. at Civic Center Building.
PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION
The Parks and Recreation Commission serves as an advisory panel to the City Council on matters related to the city's
parks and its recreation programs. Commission meetings are open to the public and members of the public are allowed to
address the commission on any parks and recreation related issue.
Meetings take place on the 2nd Thursday of each month, at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall’s Council Chambers.
PLANNING COMMISSION
The Planning Commission reviews matters related to land use, planning law, environmental, and developmental issues.
The commission holds regularly scheduled public hearings to consider such land use matters as the general plan, specific
plans, site plans, rezoning, use permits and subdivisions.
Meeting takes place on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month, at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall’s Council Chambers.

As summer draws to a close, back-to-school season is
in full effect. Remember to safely share the roads with
school buses, pedestrians and bicyclists, and provide
children with the necessary knowledge to stay safe at
school.
 Make sure the child knows their phone number,
address, how to get in touch with their parents at
work, how to get in touch with another trusted
adult and how to dial 9-1-1.
 Teach children not to talk to strangers or accept
rides from someone they don’t know.
SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
 Board the bus only after it has come to a complete
stop and the driver or attendant has instructed
you to get on.
 Always stay in clear view of the bus driver and
never walk behind the bus.






Illegal dumping is not only a shame, it’s a crime! In fact, all property owners are responsible
for any items dumped in front of their property. Leaving trash and discarded items in the
alleys and other public spaces also poses community health and safety hazards, and places a
major economic weight on the city to clean up the trash. City, State and County laws specify
strict penalties for people convicted of illegal dumping, which may include fines up to
$10,000, seizure of their vehicle, and/or six months in jail.

Office. Call Waste Management for FREE unwanted item pick up as often as once a month!

ALDI, which is a sister company of Trader Joe’s, specializes in staple items, such
as fresh produce, organic products,
beverages, toilet paper, sanitary articles, and other inexpensive household
items. Many of its products are ALDIexclusive brand products, with the number of other brands usually limited to a
maximum of two for a given item. In
addition to its standard assortment,
ALDI has weekly special offers.
Possible rotating power outages
may impact the City of South Gate
in the coming months. Southern
California Edison (SCE) customers
may experience short term power
outages if a statewide Stage 3
Emergency is declared.
A rotating power outage is a controlled electrical outage that is
called as a last resort when there
is a regional power emergency. For
an hour at a time, SCE shuts down
power in a specific area to help
ease the demand on the electrical
grid. At the end of the hour, service is restored to the affected
area and the next area will be interrupted to maintain the grid.
This is done to minimize the impact of any one customer.

The discount grocery chain ALDI opened
in South Gate on May 19, 2016.
Currently, ALDI operates 1,400 stores in
32 states and has steadily grown over
the last few years. The South Gate
location is 17,600 square feet, and sells
just approximately 1,300 items.

Los Angeles Unified School District announced 22 educators as Teachers
of the Year for 2016-17, honoring their dedication, passion and innovation to
their students and their profession. These educators guide, encourage and inspire
students to academic success.

The following educators from the City of South Gate were honored:
Gabriela Mancilla-Angulo, a mathematics teacher at South East Senior High
School, has been teaching for 16 years. Ms. Mancilla-Angulo grew up and
attended school in South Gate. She is still a South Gate resident and her
children attend school in the community.
Michelle Touceda, an English teacher at South Gate High School, has been
teaching for 16 years.

To assist residents with creating a plan for drought tolerant landscaping, please refer to the County of Los Angeles drought tolerant
landscape guidelines. A link to these guidelines can be found on the
City’s website http://cityofsouthgate.org/627/Drought-TolerantLandscape. Unfortunately, the City of South Gate is not offering
turf removal rebates.

In order to conserve water, the City of South Gate encourages
residents to replace their existing lawn with drought tolerant landscaping. However, the City’s codes require that the entire front and
side yards must be landscaped with live plant material.

The City of South Gate is preparing a Specific Plan (Plan) for the
Gateway District. The Plan will
define goals for a livable, vibrant,
and pedestrian-friendly area, while
accommodating vehicular, truck
and bus transit traffic on Firestone
Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue:
one of the City’s busiest intersections. The Plan would make it possible for the City to introduce shopping, entertainment, jobs, civic
areas, and open spaces, planned
around a future South Gate Transit
Station.
The proposed South Gate Transit
Station will accommodate the future Eco-Rapid Transit system and
link the City of South Gate to other
employment regions, commercial
areas, and residential neighborhoods and will grant South Gate
residents, business owners and
visitors alike, increased access to

nearby transportation corridors,
including Amtrak, Metrolink and
LA Metro’s Blue, Red, Gold, and
Purple Lines.

suspicion when you do receive a call from someone asking for your information.
Remember you have the right, the ability, and the power to say NO. If the caller
makes you wary, be assertive and end the conversation. Con artists know that the
longer they keep you on the phone, the higher their chances of fooling you are. By
saying no and hanging up the phone, you can prevent a crime from taking place.

online application and applicant tracking system
called NEOGOV, - the nation’s largest cloud
software for Human Resources in government and
education.

Children are not permitted in adult classes as participants or spectators.

GENERAL REFUND POLICY
A program may be canceled in the event minimum registration is not met by the specified deadline or 48 hours prior to the program.
A full refund will be issued only in the event that a program is canceled by the Parks and Recreation Department. Refunds requested
prior to the first day of class will be subject to a $10 processing fee. No refunds will be issued after the first day of class. Refunds will be
issued by check and will be mailed within 4–6 weeks. No cash refunds.

Course fees vary and must be paid in full at the time of registration. ONE CHECK MAY BE WRITTEN FOR MULTIPLE CLASS REGISTRATION.

ELIGIBILITY
Registration is open to all residents of the community and surrounding areas. South Gate residents are encouraged to enroll early
since some programs have maximum quotas.
COMMUNITY EXCURSION INFORMATION
Trip registration can be done at the Margaret Travis Senior Center, Monday - Thursday, from 8am-4pm or at the Girls Club House;
Monday-Thursday from 8:30 am to 5:30pm. and fees must be paid when you register. Registrations can also be done on-line, see
page 35 for more information. All departures leave from the Girls Club House. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before scheduled departure and check-in at the office with the trip escort. There is no grace period. Buses will depart and return from Girls Club House on
time and as scheduled (traffic / weather permitting).

Teens from all over Southern California will be taking over
“Boomers” in Irvine! That’s right we will have exclusive use of the
entire place, plus this year we are adding a meal for everyone!
Adding to the fun will be our dance floor and DJ with raffle prizes
and dance contests. So come out and join the rest of So Cal for an
evening of fun and excitement.

The teen center offers friendly staff who encourage you to bring your best. In addition to the staff the center offers computers, NETFLIX, Playstation 4 (Madden, NBA, FIFA, MLB,
Just Dance), homework and college application assistance, WIFI, mini basketball court, and a pool table. The Center gives you the chance to compete against your friends in
tournaments of your choosing. You can also complete your volunteer hours through the various volunteer opportunities that the Parks and Recreation Department has to offer.

The Teen Center is open Monday thru Friday from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and if you are looking for a place to form a new club or host a meeting for a club that you are a part of
consider the Teen Center as your go to place.

YOUTH GROUP SWIM LESSON PROGRAM
Parent & Child Aquatics (Level 1)
- Introduces basic skills to parents and children. Parents are taught
how to safely work with their child in the water. This includes:
appropriate supporting/holding their child in the water, preparing
and encouraging their child to participate fully in each skill.
Children are introduced to basic skills that lay a foundation to
help them learn to swim.
Our Aquatic staff is eager to teach you and your little ones how to
swim and be safe around the water. Pre-test is available upon
request and need. Please bring child and swim suit with you
before registration during open hours.
Parent & Child Aquatics (Level 2)
- Builds on the skills introduced in Level 1 and teaches more
advanced skills based on the child’s ability.
Preschool Aquatics (Level 1)
- Introduces the most elementary aquatic skills, which participants
continue to build on as they progress through the Preschool
Aquatics and Learn-to-Swim levels. At this first level, children
are encouraged to develop good attitudes and safe practices
around the water.
-Most skills in this level are performed with assistance. This level
marks the beginning of independent aquatic locomotion skills.
Participants continue to explore using simultaneous and
alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to gain more
proficiency for future strokes.
- Skills in this level are performed independently. Participants
learn to improve coordination of combined simultaneous arm and
leg actions; and alternating arm and leg action.
Learn-to-Swim (Level 1) - Introduction to Water Skills
- Participants will be taught the basic personal water safety
information and skills, to help participants feel comfortable in the
water and to enjoy the water safely.
Learn-to-Swim (Level 2) - Fundamental Aquatic Skills
– Participants are taught to float without support and to recover to
a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true
locomotion skills. Participants further develop simultaneous arm
and leg actions; and alternating arm and leg action on the front
and back that lay the foundation for future strokes.
Learn-to-Swim (Level 3) - Stroke Development
– Participants are taught to swim the front crawl, elementary
backstroke, scissor kick, dolphin kick, and how to tread water.
Participants will also be taught the rules to entering the water
headfirst in 9 feet deep of water.
Learn-to-Swim (Level 4) - Stroke Improvement
– Participants are taught how to improve their skills and increase
their endurance by swimming already learned strokes for greater
distances. Participants are also taught how to back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly and the basics of turning at a wall.
Learn-to-Swim (Level 5) - Stroke Refinement
– Participants are taught how to refine their performance of all the
strokes (Front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke,
elementary backstroke and sidestroke) and increase their distance.
Students are also taught the proper way to change directions while
swimming.
Learn-to-Swim (Level 6) - Swimming & Skill Proficiency
– Participants continue to refine their strokes as they are taught to
swim with more ease, efficiency, power, smoothness and over
greater distances. They will be introduced to other aquatic
activities in the areas of Personal Water Safety, Fundamentals of
Diving, and Fitness Swimming. These activities should prepare
them for more advanced water related programs like lifeguarding,
competitive, and synchronized swimming.

Group swim lessons have 6 to 8 students per class, depending on
skill. Group lessons are for children 3-17 years of age and are held
Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday between the hours
of 5:00pm - 7:00pm, for four weeks. Each class is approximately
30 minutes in length. Each session of classes and times offered are
based on the number of students who pass to the next level in the
previous session.
If this is the first time registering for a class here at South Gate

Competitive Swimming is a great sport and the next step up once
you’ve learned how to swim. The City of South Gate swim team
has been in existence for many years. A large number of swimmers
on the team participated in our swim lesson program and on the
summer novice swim team. Try-outs are on Thursdays 7-7:30 pm.

ADULT ADVANCED SWIM SESSION
Fee: $8 per day / $60 monthly
If you want to be able to swim multiple laps back and forth without stopping, train for a triathlon, swim competitively, or condition for water polo, then this session of advanced stroke refinement and swim conditioning is for you. This session will be held
in 5’-7’ deep water. Membership with United States Masters
Swimming (USMS) is required to participate in this session.
Self-traveled competitive events are optional. 20 participants
maximum per session. 2 weeks free trial. Additional sessions

Water polo is a fun alternative to swimming laps. Whether you’re
a retired collegiate water polo player, or an amateur with heart,

open play session is to develop it into a traveling “Adult” Water
Polo Team for ages 18 and older, so volunteer organizers and

Birthday parties are the best, but a birthday “pool” party is even
better when you have an indoor Olympic size swimming pool all
to yourself and your friends for your 15th Birthday! We also rent
out the pool for Baptisms, business parties, swim meets, water
polo tournaments and more. The South Gate Swim Stadium is an
indoor Olympic size heated swimming pool with an enclosed
large patio for dining, music and extra seating. We can take a
request over the phone, but reservations must be made in person.
Pool Rental Fees
Non-profit basic rate (private party): $150 an hour for 150 guests,

Esta clase ha sido diseñada para niños de 2 años de edad. La clase les
enseñara a convivir con otros niños de su edad antes de que comiencen
la escuela. Les enseñaran canciones, juegos, y otras actividades. Padres
necesitan estar presente durante la clase. Este curso es de 9 semanas.
Para poder registrar a su hijo para esta clase debe ir personalmente a la
oficina del Girls Club House al (323) 563-5447.
CLASES DE TOT TIME
Esta clase es para niños entre 3 - 5 años de edad. Se les enseñaran los
colores, números, el alfabeto y los ayudaran a socializarse con otros
alumnos de su propia edad. Se necesitara el acta de nacimiento de cada
niño para poder registrarlos. El espacio para cada clase es limitado, por
favor de apresurarse si desea registrar a su hijo. Para poder registrar a
su hijo para esta clase debe ir personalmente a la oficina del Girls
Club House.

Registraciones para los paseos se llevan a cabo en la oficina del Girls Club House, localizada en el 4940 Southern Ave, de Lunes
a Jueves de 8:30 am - 5:30 pm. También puede ir al Margaret Travis Senior Center localizado en el 4855 Tweedy Blvd., de Lunes
a Viernes, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Para poder inscribirse debe dejar sus boletos pagados. Todos los paseos se llevaran acabo, no
importe el clima o al menos que nuestra oficina le deje saber. Por favor de llegar 10-15 minutos antes que salga el autobús. Su
puntualidad es de suma importancia, no se esperara a nadie. Todos los paseos saldrán y regresaran al Girls Club House.
Rembolsos: No se harán rembolsos el día del paseo o de ultima hora. Los rembolsos solo se dan si podemos garantizar que su
boleto se pueda volver a vender. Si desea obtener mas información en español sobre los paseos recreativos que se ofrecen a la
