Mission Appeal
This Weekend
Our Holy Father, Pope
Francis has indicated that
encouraging acts of
charity is one of the main
focuses of his pontificate.
As a concrete act of
solidarity, we invite you
to see the world as the
Pope does—through the
eyes of those struggling to
make ends meet on a
daily basis. Modeling the
Pope’s love for the “least
among us” and moving
forward on our call to love our neighbor, we invite
you to participate in our diocese’s Summer
Mission Appeal.
This weekend we are pleased to welcome our
friend, Fr. Tony Stanonik, to share his story of life
as a missionary priest in Nicaragua. We are all
called to support missionaries in their works of
evangelization and loving service. The proceeds
from our mission appeal will be used to directly
support Fr. Tony and the people he serves in
Nicaragua. Your generous donation unites you as a
missionary to our brothers and sisters around the
world who need our help.
There are special yellow envelopes in the pews
for this collection. Return them in the collection
basket or to the Parish Office.
We celebrate the feast of
The Transfiguration of the Lord
Tuesday, August 6th
Pope Benedict XVI had this to say
about the Transfiguration:
“The transfiguration is a prayer
event; it displays visibly what
happens when Jesus talks with his Father: the
profound interpretation of his being with God, which
then becomes pure light. In his oneness with the
Father, Jesus is himself ‘light from light.”

Being Greedy for God
Throughout time, people
have struggled with greed
and hoarding. Plato said
that the one with many
needs is poor; the one
with few needs is rich.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn cautioned that we prove our
greatness not by the number of our possessions but by
the grandeur of our actions. In today’s gospel, Jesus,
likewise, admonishes us against being greedy.
Each of us, rich or poor, can be infected by greed. We
are greedy when we pursue a “more-is-better” lifestyle
and hold a “must-have-it-now” mentality. We are greedy
when we accumulate more than we need and hoard our
time, talent and treasure. It is not how much we have,
but our attitude toward what we have. We are in danger
if we confuse possessions with true human worth, or if
we confuse security with happiness. Our true worth cannot be measured in dollars, stock certificates, or insurance policies, but rather in the way we live our lives as
sons and daughters of the generous open-handed Giver
of Life.
May our Eucharist lead us to differentiate between our
needs and our wants and to share our lives more openly
with others. Then we will be rich in all that really counts.

All who follow the way of Christ wrestle with setting
priorities. Filling a bigger barn, adding to a stock portfolio,
increasing a market share, working a second job; these
cannot dominate one's life. Each one of us must set aside
working for earthly goods to do the spiritual and corporal
works of mercy that make us rich in the sight of God.

The secret of success for
Catholic schools' is their
practical and sensible
approach to child development. Most importantly,
they recognize that
schools exist not only to
teach academics, but
mainly to help families
educate the whole child:

“Prince of Egypt”
Friday, August 16th
6:00pm in the Parish Hall
You might have seen this movie when it was released in
1998, but it’s worth a second look. The movie is about
Moses and his transformation from an Egyptian prince
to the man destined to deliver God’s chosen people
from slavery. We’ll have hotdogs and the trimmings.
Bring your comfy chair and your family! RSVP to the
Parish Office if you can join us!
Our Parish Food Pantry has been
working on over-drive this summer! Our shelves are bare and we
are in need of your donations to
fill them up! If you can help us
with any of the following items
we would be most grateful!
Canned soup, canned fruit, canned meat, canned
beans, cup-o-noodles or ramen noodles, granola bars,
macaroni and cheese—boxed or microwavable.
You can drop them off at the Parish Office.
We appreciate your help!

the Parts of the Mass
As Catholics, our worship centers on the Mass. The Mass has
a number of parts, each of which
is a call to deepen our faith:
Part I —The Liturgy of the Word: the Homily
St. Didacus teens at Steubenville retreat last weekend.
Thank You!
Thank you for your donations, for supporting all
our summer fundraisers and for all your prayers
that helped us get our Youth Ministry group to the
Steubenville teen retreat that took place at USD last
weekend. We were able to take 25 teens from the
parish and it was an awesome experience for everyone. The teens heard lots of inspiring Catholic
speakers, rocked out to some great music, attended
Mass and participated in Eucharistic Adoration.
Your support made it happen and we appreciate it!
The Great Gift Summer of the
of the Father
The Holy Spirit is
the great gift of the
Father, made
possible to us
through the death
and resurrection of Jesus. The presence of the Holy
Spirit within us is, in fact, so great that Jesus himself
said it was better that he go so that the Holy Spirit
could come (John 16:7). What an amazing gift — the
presence of God not manifested through oracles or
divination, not even limited to temples and Churches — but in us. This often-neglected person of the Triune
God is God’s active presence on our earth today. He is
the person that gives direction and inspiration to our
daily lives. The promptings we receive each day to
serve this person or encourage that person, to pray or
deny ourselves, come from the Holy Spirit. The more
we listen, the more He directs us. The more He directs
us, the more we live in the fruits of the Holy Spirit,
which are peace, love, joy, patience, kindness,
generosity, faith, gentleness, and self-control
(Galatians 5:22-23).
In the homily, the priest follows the example of
Christ on the road to Emmaus, explaining and
interpreting the Scriptures. Sometimes this
interpretation is biblical, sometimes theological, sometimes moral or catechetical (Lk
24:13-35). Always, however, again in imitation
of the Emmaus encounter (where Christ “was
made known … in the Breaking of the
Bread”), it should prepare the congregation for
or point us toward what is about to follow: the
Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Do you know what a missionary is?
A missionary is a person who leaves family
and friends and comfort behind because
they feel God is telling them to share
the Gospel. They go
out into the world to
spread the Good
News of Jesus! This
week at Mass we
learned about Fr. Tony who is a
missionary in the country of Nicaragua.
When he travels around Nicaragua
sometimes he takes
a boat or even a
donkey! Say a prayer
today for Fr. Tony
and for all the
missionaries around
the world who are
spreading God’s love!

Creador día a día?
¿Te sientes apegado a tus bienes, pocos o
muchos, los que tengas...? ¿Qué quieres
hacer con ellos? ¿Cómo puedes hacerte rico
en Dios?
