BONAVENTURE HIGH SCHOOL: 3167 Telegraph Road Mr. Marc Groff, Principal. School Office: (805) 648-6836 Weekly Reflection Reflexión Semanal Seeking our heavenly transformation Buscando Nuestra Transformación Celestial Today’s readings and prayers celebrate the transfiguration of Jesus which reminds us that we are meant to be citizens of heaven. Our time on this earth is a journey – one that is to culminate, as Saint Paul writes in today’s epistle, “in the Lord Jesus Christ [changing] our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself.” A description of Jesus’ transfiguration is recorded in today’s Gospel. Luke writes that “while [Jesus] was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white” while he stood on the mountain next to Moses and Elijah. Peter, James, and John, who witness this event, hear God’s voice affirm, “This is my chosen Son, listen to him.” This affirmation’s roots are found in the Old Testament reading from Genesis where God establishes the covenant with Abraham when He says, “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so, shall your descendants be.” This promise sets the salvation story in motion and Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus to signify that Jesus is the fulfillment of both God’s laws and his prophesies. This helps us understand that our baptism is the beginning of our transformation. So, as we strive to walk daily with Jesus, we are inspired to pray, “Bless [us], O Lord, with a blessing that endures for ever, and keep [us] faithful to the Gospel of your Only Begotten Son, so that [we] may always desire and at last attain that glory whose beauty he showed in his own Body, to the amazement of his Apostles” (Prayer Over the People). Mass Intentions MASS INTENTIONS FOR Feb 22 — Feb 28 Seeing and Hearing the Lord with a New Heart Monday, February 22 6:30 Clyman Patterson (D) & Marijeanne Farley (D) 8:00 Burl & Theresa Cleary (D) The Spirit led Jesus into the desert and there engaged the power of evils of temptation. But as we know, He rejected so as to begin His mission to proclaim the Good News. It is in the desert of our Lenten journey that we encounter our own comforts and ways of being that keep us from identifying and rejecting what is not of God’s Spirit. This can be something as simple as placing your hand in a holy water font and being shocked or dismayed in finding only sand. This reminds us that with Jesus, we spend 40 days in the desert of Lent so that we can REALLY desire the refreshing waters that await us in our baptismal relationship with the Lord. It must be a NEW relationship that is born of prayer, fasting, and works of Charity. In this second week of Lent, we are mystified by a Transfigured Jesus who invites us to ponder what it might mean to embrace the wonder and mystery of God’s life in us rather than the desire to live a life “transfigured” our own efforts and expectations. Our yearnings and our desires may propel us at this time but these also distract us from embracing the challenges that await those who seek the will of the Lord. We give into our own temptations and rationalizations that keep us self-centered and selfabsorbed rather than centered on the Lord. The image of Jesus on the mountain top, transfigured before Peter, James, and John, reminds us of the wondrous possibilities that await those who persevere on this Lenten journey and listen to the voice of God calling us to join Him. It is the voice from the heavens that invites us, “Listen to Him.” Tuesday, February 23 6:30 John P. Higgins Jr. (D) & Arlene A. Building your child’s self-esteem could help prevent abuse Bullies and predators typically pick easy targets to victimize and abuse. This could be a child who has low selfesteem or confidence. An abuser may use low selfesteem to forge a bond with a victim, or even to make a victim think that he or she deserves abusive treatment. To guard against this, you can work on building self-esteem by teaching kids their worth as children of God. For more tips, request a copy of “Balancing Discipline and Self Esteem” from [email protected]. Adult Ministries Adult Confirmation Are you interested in completing your baptism?
