Latin American Food Pictures
The information in this resource was developed as part of the Latin American, nutrition resource
project.
The represented Latin American regions include countries from South and Central America.
Since information on Latin American diets in Canada is limited, this resource may be helpful for
nutrition counselors advising clients of Latin American origin with diabetes. The results cannot
be considered representative of foods commonly consumed by all Latin Americans, as there are
wide variations in diet among Latin American communities. Further information on adapting Latin
American diets to reflect diabetes management is also available in another resource called,”
Beyond the Basics: Lifestyle Choices for Diabetes Prevention and Management” available
from the CDA literature order desk.
Portions sizes listed in this resource correspond to approximately 15 grams (g) of available
carbohydrates. These portion sizes have been reviewed by a working group of diabetes
educators and dietitians, however may vary between cultures and food preparation methods.

Possible Uses
Two versions of the Latin American food pictures are available for use: this Adobe pdf version
with translations OR food pictures alone in a zipped format. These pictures are available from
the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) website. www.diabetes.ca
This pdf with translations can be used in a number of ways:
• The food picture page can be printed on Avery label #05165 (8 ½” x 11” white full size
sheets). This sticker page can then be used to cut out food groups and insert on the
Beyond the Basics Meal Planning Poster.
• The page can be printed and used as a handout on its own for portion size control or along
with the Beyond the Basics Meal Planning poster for carbohydrate counting.
• The page may be useful when obtaining diet histories to identify commonly consumed
foods.
The zipped file contains the pictures only as JPEG files. These can be copied to a variety of
media. Examples of possible uses include:
• In PowerPoint presentations for dietary education
• Added to existing institutional handouts to supply images of foods familiar to the Latin
American culture
• Copied to cards for group activities such as food sorting games, etc.
Note on Portions
Portion sizes have been calculated, where possible for 15g of available carbohydrate, from
references 1-10. No food analyses were undertaken. Portion sizes for some foods were not
available in which case the portion sizes for the key ingredients have been provided. Portions
sizes may vary within Latin American cultural groups and based on individual cooking methods.
N.B- foods advised to limit such as chicharrón or sausages are low in carbohydrates but very
high in saturated fat.
Development
This and the other online resources in this series were developed as part of the Latin American
nutrition tool project. Latin American communities which were represented include countries in
South America and Central America. Food lists for Spanish and Portuguese speakers were
developed and reviewed by the Latin American Working Group. External professional experts
who work with Latin American communities or are of Latin American origin were consulted to
indicate foods commonly consumed on the food list.
