PASTOR'S NOTES Priestly Convocation This past week, all the priests for the Diocese of San Diego gathered together with our Bishop and Coadjutor Bishop for our annual priestly convocation. As I mentioned to people that the priests would be attending our “convocation,” some gave me a confused look, wondering what a convocation is, wondering if it was really a nice way of saying that we’re taking a week off for vacation. While I wish that it were, the convocation is anything but a vacation. Most of the dioceses in the United States have an annual convocation in which priests gather with their bishop(s) to discuss Church matters and look ahead to the coming year. In the case of the Diocese of San Diego, the diocesan Office for Priests is responsible for bringing in a presenter who will spend part of the week giving us new ideas and tips that will help us in our priestly ministry. Also, our diocesan bishop, Bishop Brom, spends some time updating the priests on things happening at the diocesan level. For example, this year Bishop Brom spoke to us about the “Year of Faith,” which starts October 11th. Naturally, some of the most joyful moments of the convocation are the masses! While Bishop Brom presides at every mass, each day we have a different homilist. Normally on Tuesday, one of our most recently ordained priests gives the homily. This year, we had our own Fr. Jay preaching!!! It was nice to have St. Francis represented by Fr. Jay. On Thursday, we had one of our priests who celebrated his 50th anniversary of ordination! As you can see, our week can be somewhat busy, but it does give all of the priests in the diocese a chance to spend some time with each other in fellowship and sharing ideas and suggestions with each other. This is, of course, one of the things I look forward to the most because it allows me to chat with priests I hardly see throughout the year. If I was asked to sum up what the convocation is for me, I would have to say that it helps me better serve our parish community here at St. Francis. It not only gives me new ideas and input, but it also refreshes me to see so many wonderful priests in our diocese who are so willing to serve God and His Church! Rev. Efrain Bautista Administrator STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. James, in the Second Reading, condemns the wealthy because they have cheated their laborers of wages and selfishly stored up treasures and wanton luxury on earth. Wealth in itself is not bad. But we, as Christian stewards belonging to Christ, acknowledge that all things, including financial resources, come from God. Moses, in the Book of Numbers, and Jesus, in St. Mark’s Gospel, both teach us how blessed it is to belong to Christ. In a spirit of thanksgiving and gratitude, we return a portion of these monetary gifts back to the Lord through our parish offertory, the Catholic Services Appeal, and other worthy causes Cultivating Our Faith 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Moses said, “Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets!” (Numbers 11:25-29). Psalm — The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart (Psalm 19) Second Reading — Come now, you rich. The wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying aloud (Jason 5:1-6). Gospel — Whoever is not against us is for us (Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48). LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Job 1:6-22; Lc 9:46-50 Martes: Job 3:1-3, 11-17, 20-23; Mt 18:1-5, 10 Miércoles: Job 9:1-12, 14-16; Lc 9:57-62 Jueves: Job 19:21-27; Lc 10:1-12 Viernes: Job 38:1, 12-21; 40:3-5; Lc 10:13-16 Sábado: Job 42:1-3, 5-6, 12-17; Lc 10:17-24 Domingo: Gén 2:18-24; Sal 128 (127); Heb 2:9-11; Mc 10:2-16 [2-12] Domingo Vigésimo Sexto Tiempo Ordinario FORMACION FAMILIAR EN LA FE!
