Deacon John brought joy and smiles to many Saint Linus School students when he blessed their pets on the annual feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. Sister Catherine Casey What a great servant of God! John toiled to the end, good and faithful servant that he was. John came to my home a little over two months ago, on fire with an evangelical Catholic message - to set regular Catholics on fire for love of Jesus and their faith. John saw that there were small embers of faith that were dying in the hearts of many of our Catholic people. He saw that there was a great need to breathe new life into these embers that they may blaze into a great fire of love for God and service to His Holy Name. John came preaching to help him to set this fire ablaze. And it is true what he was saying. John is right. Although in every parish there is a core of parishioners who live out the Gospel at church and in their lives, who are already set ablaze in fire for love of God and His Only Begotten Son Our Lord Jesus Christ, John wanted to reach out to these dying embers. John saw that regular Catholic folks needed evangelizing. Indeed, this is the New Evangelization that Pope Saint John Paul II began during his Pontificate and that is spreading and increasing now. When I first met them, way back in 1995, before John was a deacon, he and his wife Susan were already on fire for the faith. I can see them clearly in my mind's eye, sitting or standing side by side in the pews, near the front left if you face the altar, smiling and singing and rejoicing in prayer. Indeed, John was telling me that he and his wife centered their lives in ministry in the church as far back as the 1970s. And they never stopped. What a great treasure and gift not only to St. Linus and the many thousands of people they touched, but also a great treasure and gift to the universal Church, as all these lives have gone out to the world in greater faith in Jesus Christ. Thank you John, and thank you Sue, for your extraordinary witness to Jesus, to love, and to service. Our prayers are with John in quiet confidence in God's great mercy for all, especially to his dear friends. Our prayers are with you Sue and your family to provide consolation and the joy of our faith whose end is everlasting life with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mike Mikulski We first met John and Sue in the early 1970's. There was a group of us that had our children at St. Linus School and we all became good friends. We all worked together at school and in our parish. We had home masses, potlucks, Las Posadas, etc., together with our children. It was in those early days that John taught Clem the fine art of filling your plate at a buffet or potluck - a skill Clem utilizes to this day! When our children grew up we continued our friendship, working together at church, going on group vacations, and getting together for coffee in each other's homes or the Town Center. I served on many committees with John over the years, and we didn't always agree on things, but we could always agree to disagree. John was a true visionary and like Robert Kennedy said, (quoting George Bernard Shaw), "Some men see things as they are and ask why. I see things that never were and ask why not." That quote always reminded me so much of John – he was always exploding with ideas and visions of how things could be! John was also a great example of a Christian husband, father, friend, and man of God. His joy in becoming a deacon and serving the people of God seemed boundless. "Well done good and faithful servant. Enter now into the joy of the Lord." Mt.25:21. We will all miss you John! Maureen Linnebur DECIMOQUINTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO PAGE 5 Deacon John – the Master Teacher. I have wonderful memories of Deacon John but the one that comes to mind is how much he loved to teach people about the Catholic Faith. He had a deep love for his Church and was so good at teaching us, whether it be by a short homily, a workshop, confirmation class, parent meeting, or in simple conversation. Deacon John took seriously Saint Pope John Paul II’s call to Christian Unity and he made Ecumenism and emphasis in his ministry. This was always very inspiring to me. BUT nothing inspired me more than to hear Deacon John sing. He beautifully chanted the Exultet for many years at our Easter Vigils. He would lift his voice to heaven every Sunday during mass with such enthusiasm and joyful praise. I was glad to be able to sing for him and with him just days before his death. We have another angel in the angel choir, singing God’s praises for all eternity. Deacon John, pray for us. Anna Betancourt When I enrolled in the St. Linus R.C.I.A., which was led then by John, he revealed to us that we must accept our responsibility to show Christ to the world. Be Christ to all we encounter, to know God intimately and to understand the Sacramental gifts that makes it possible. It was clear that I was not here to, merely, learn the mechanics necessary to get through the Mass. We were being challenged to accept a new life, a new way of loving, to become “A New Creation, in Christ”. To step outside my Comfort Zone and do what-ever I could to be Christ to others, in Dn. John’s words “You’re not being trained to sit on the side-lines, you’re being prepared to get in the game, you must serve” and after my Baptism the fire he prayed for me to receive was ignited and continues to grow. I would have to write a book to tell you of everything that Dn. John has done, or said, that has inspired me to go beyond my human frailty, embrace the power of the Holy Spirit, and know the Peace that can, only be found in Christ-Jesus. The greatest example of this came when I was given the privilege, and blessing, of taking Holy Communion to him the Sunday before Jesus came for him. His condition would, only, allow him to receive the “Precious Blood”. After entering the house and being greeted by the entire family, Sue spoke to him and told him that I was there to bring him Communion. He opened his eyes, looked into my eyes and smiled. My heart filled with Joy. We all sang, prayed, shared Scripture, and prepared to receive Communion. During prayer, I heard him say once “Lord hear our prayer”. When we were prepared, Sue told him that I was giving him Communion. When I proclaimed “The Blood of Christ, Amen” he responded “Amen!”. After receiving, he closed his eyes, and on his face was the most incredible expression. I saw Peace, Love, Joy and Power all at the same time, and I remember thinking to myself, “I Want That!” I have thought about those “Miraculous” moments a lot since then. I realize that, as Dn. John would say “God is WOW!” I stand in Awe of God’s greatness that He has shown me this, through my Big Brother John, Teacher, Life-Preacher, Friend, and Brother-In-Christ. Sue and Family, from me and my family, Dn. John has always been a Lamp on a Lampstand, giving Light to everyone in the house and has inspired us to be the same. Thank You, for sharing with us your great Blessing, in John for over 28 years. Know that we will continue to pray for you, and with you, and be here for you. With Gratitude, to the Father, Son, Holy Spirit, Amen. Cornell & Kathleen Watson and Family PAGE 6 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Treasures From Our Tradition Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe Many marriage customs stand in tension with modern American attitudes and values, notably “giving away the bride,” which is no longer in the Catholic liturgy, and reminds us of a time when marriage was a contract between men (the groom and the bride’s father). A Mexican custom, now approved for use in the United States, has a very different message. An ancient Roman custom called for smashing pieces of gold and silver so that bride and groom could each keep half. This is the origin of today’s Mexican practice of the groom giving thirteen gold coins to the bride, symbolically placing all his worldly goods into her care, and a sign of his unconditional trust. The coins are often given in beautiful gift boxes and are retained as an heirloom. Why thirteen? The standard explanation is that they represent Jesus and the apostles. The priest blesses the coins and pours them into the bride’s cupped hands. Then she entrusts them to the groom, who later pours them back into her hands. This enduring ritual is in such harmony with our tradition’s view of marriage that it is now increasingly performed by English speaking Hispanic Catholics at weddings in the United States. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. God’s Word Today Today we hear three stories about people being chosen by God: Amos the prophet, the Twelve, and all those who are baptized into Christ—which means us! So often when we think about people such as prophets and apostles who were chosen by God to fulfill a special task, we think about old bearded men who seem so far off and remote. Yet these were people like us, who chose to respond to God’s call within the context of their everyday lives. Perhaps today’s scriptures are inviting us to remember the call that was issued by God at the moment of our baptism. Listen to the words of Saint Paul in today’s second reading to discover just what that call entails. Our world is still in desperate need of prophets and apostles. Peace and justice seem so elusive in our time. Perhaps today’s word of God will inspire us to respond to God’s call to bring the gospel of salvation to those we meet in our everyday lives. Ismael was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, and attended Westchester High School, UCLA, and Cal State Dominguez Hills. He graduated from St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo and was ordained in June 2013 at the Cathedral of Angels. His inspiration to enter the priesthood is to be a conduit of God’s peace and love by being a healer and a prophetic voice of the Lord’s unconditional love and goodness to His people. While attending a retreat in a rather young age, he had a meaningful encounter and experienced the reality of God’s love and caused him to want to change his way of life. He entered the priesthood with much hesitation but with God’s grace, his priestly ministry is now encouraging others to grow in holiness and develop a close relationship with the Lord. Fr. Ismael is an Associate Pastor as St. Pius X Church in Santa Fe Springs, CA. He conducts monthly healing masses at St. Pius X Church and is a speaker at the annual SCRC Charismatic Convention. Come and receive the risen Lord’s healing touch. PAGE 8 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ProLife Ministry Free acupuncture treatment by local university students! Table of Blessings Meal Ministry As part of our Pro Life Ministry, we must always endeavor to minister to the needs of our sick and elderly friends. There are many families within our community who are caring for loved ones who are in the late to final stages of life. Although it is a difficult and overwhelming task, it is also a great blessing to be able to spend those final precious moments with that special person. We often feel helpless in knowing what we can do to help our friends during such difficult times. In addition to our compassion and prayers, we can also offer practical and immediate help. This is where our St. Linus family comes in! With the blessing of our Pastor, we are gathering a list of friends who would be willing to provide a hot meal for a family facing this challenge. If you would like more information or to sign up to be a part of this beautiful and loving ministry, please contact Mary Ratanasurakarn at 951/500-0787 or send an email to our Pro Life address below.
