Truman High School. F rowns were not allowed. This past Fri., Oct. 4th was, officially, World Smile Day. And one of the biggest supplier of smiles, the Smile Train, a non-profit organization that funds surgeries for children born with cleft lips and cleft palates, was present for a celebration at the Harry S. Truman High School Track in Co-op City. In addition to providing hundreds of thousands of cleft surgeries since 1999, Smile Train has provided training to doctors and medical professionals in over 85 countries. They were joined by a pair of beauties whose careers rely largely on their smiles and with deep ties to the borough and to the cause. Smile Train, in collaboration with Project BOOST, a program that provides cultural and academic enrichment to New York City public school students, hosted a day of awareness for cleft lips and cleft palates. World Smile Day was created by Harvey Ball, the creator of the smiley face logo in 1963, who believed that every person should devote one day each year to smiles and acts of compassion throughout the world. He created World Smile Day in an effort to revitalize the original meaning of his logo as a symbol of A grin the whole world wide generosity. Students from Harry S. Truman High School, MS 180, MS 181 and PS 178 all got an opportunity to exercise around the track, eat pizza provided by Famous Famiglia Pizza and see live performances—as well as meet a few celebrities, including Devyn, the winner of Oxygen’s The Face, singer and songwriter Sonali Argade, and Miss New York contestant Saribel Rodríguez. Bronx-born Rodriguez was born with a cleft palate that was remedied after five surgeries while she was still a baby. Now, at age 21, she is a contestant for Miss New York. She also won second place in this year’s contest to be the queen of the Hispanic Day Parade. Rodriguez promises to allocate 10 percent of her Miss New York sponsorship money to the Smile Train should she win. “What better platform to represent than the one you’re born with?” she said A cleft lip or palate occurs when there is a gap in one’s lip or the roof of one’s mouth. The congenital condition is typically remedied with a relatively inexpensive and non-invasive surgery that can sometimes leave a slight scar as the only reminder of the condition. The surgery costs, on average, $250. But many people in developing nations cannot afford the surgery. Many people with cleft lips or cleft palates are teased and sometimes ostracized. Rodriguez would know. “There was always bullying,” she recalled. “But I never let it get to me. I grew up very confident. That helped me out through life.” Eliza Pérez, a 9th grader at Harry S. Truman High School, was also born with a cleft palate—and an air of confidence, said her media teacher, Dave Roush. “Eliza came into my class this year, and she has an energy and a brightness—her energy glows wherever she goes,” he said of his student. Pérez’s smile was on full display on Friday. She said she refuses to see her cleft palate as a burden. “I know it’s not easy being born with it, but it’s special—not every has one,” she said. She too has learned that not everyone views her condition as a special quality. “They don’t understand us,” she said. “They laugh at us because we’re different.” But she is not alone in persisting on the positive. Story and photos by Robin Elisabeth Kilmer H op aboard. The South Bronx awaits. Non-profit South Bronx Overall Development Corporation (SoBRO) hosts an annual tour of the South Bronx to show off their work and the progress that the borough has been making. The tour, supported this year by Ariel Property Advisors and Bollinger Insurance Company, has drawn developers, consultants, brokers and residents. This past Wed., Oct. 2nd, the tour brought out about a dozen participants. The bus breezed though the Bruckner Boulevard and the Port Morris neighborhood, and made stops at Montessori Charter School (the Bronx’s first), the Pascap Scrap Recycling Center in Eastchester, and the Terrafina packing plant in Bathgate. Each of these projects were ones in which the non-profit had been involved. SoBRO, for example, had successfully advocated for the clean-up of a former industrial site adjacent to Pascap, and coordinated the nut manufacturer Terrafina’s move to the Bathgate Industrial Estate. It also fought for the rezoning of the Bruckner Boulevard and Port Morris area, which was an industrial zone, into a mixed-use neighborhood with thriving antique stores and restaurants as well as residential buildings and industry. The participants were impressed by what they saw. “The South Bronx I used to know is not the South Bronx that I see today,” said Rocco Triglia, a broker for Friedland Realty Incorporated. “What’s exciting is that there’s an organization to reorganize the South Bronx,” he added. “It’s a good place. A new place.” Terrafina used to have a packaging plant in Brooklyn, but has since moved to the Bronx. The location of the plant, near the Hunt’s Point Terminal Market, is ideal, said CEOJames Locke. “We were very lucky. This is a more convenient location for distribution.” The company has 65 employees, most of them Bronxites. “We’re here to stay.” They hope to have a roasting facility nearby within a year. The facility will require ten new employees. Tax incentives are provided to businesses that hire locally. “That’s our job, to link them to employees,” said Philip Morrow, the President and Chief Executive Officer of SoBRO. Andrew Babb is not in real estate—but might be looking for some. Babb is a brand developer for small businesses. He is currently hoping to scout out a location for one of his clients, LoveJoySweetTreats, a bakery that operates online. The founder, Joy Hibbert, is looking to open up a brick and mortar space where she can bake and sell her goods, which are organic and can be custom made to fit various dietary needs, including vegan and gluten-free. The closest thing to mortar and brick Brooklyn-based Hibbert has are stands in several farmers’ markets throughout the city. What made Babb eye the Bronx? “It’s an amazing community,” he said. He is not daunted by the fact that vegan and gluten-free are not yet popular food trends in the Bronx. “It’s a great opportunity for conversation and education,” he said. Babb thinks a spot on Gun Hill Road, near Montefiore Hospital, would be ideal for Hibbert. “There’s a great deal of traffic,” he reasoned. Take Care New York” public health campaign. This year, the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) will focus on preventing obesity, urging New Yorkers to “Commit to Be Fit” by eating healthy foods and exercising to fight illness and maintain a healthy weight. During the entire month, City hospitals and primary healthcare centers will host over 60 public health fairs and education events where children and adults can learn their body mass index (BMI), measure blood pressure and conduct a three-minute cardiovascular fitness test. Participants will be asked to fill out a “Commit to be Fit” post card where they can record their blood pressure and BMI, plus the new healthy eating and exercise habits they are willing to adopt. For children, the post card lists the “5-2-1-0 Rule” to be followed every day: 5 or more fruits and vegetables, 2 hours or less of TV and video games; one hour of physical activity; and 0 sugary drinks, with a recommendation to drink low fat milk or water. “Adults and children who are overweight are at increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, arthritis and cancer,” said Dr. David Stevens, Senior Director of the Office of Healthcare Improvement at HHC. “Eating right, exercising and losing weight can improve your health and decrease the risk of chronic disease. A few minutes of preventive care can save a life.” At the health fairs, participants can also obtain free flu shots and a variety of prevention and early detection tests for other chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, asthma, HIV and cancer. They can also obtain nutrition and health insurance counseling, smoking cessation kits, and other services at little or no cost. Records show that over 50% of adults and 40% of children are overweight or obese in New York City. The obesity epidemic strikes hardest in communities that already suffer from health and economic disparities, particularly black, Hispanic and low-income communities where the rate of overweight and obesity can reach up to 70% in some areas. HHC has also partnered with “Shape Up NYC” to provide a series of exercise classes this month including aerobics, yoga, Zumba, Latin cardio, calypso cardio and other exercise routines. Prior registration is not required. Participants are just asked to bring their own bottled water and workout mat. All “Take Care NY” services are provided regardless of immigration status and ability to pay. However, a year went by without any cameras being installed, causing NYCHA residents to doubt whether they would ever arrive. The cameras are meant to deter illegal activity, vandalism and violence within NYCHA buildings and make residents feel safer. “My neighbor was attacked last year— and the police don’t even know who did it because there’s not cameras,” said Adelaida Marrero, a resident of the Marble Hill Houses. “There’s no security,” agreed Daisy Dixon. “Someone on my floor was held up. They put a gun to his head,” reported Elena Morales. The residents are still waiting for cameras. So short of carrying them in the womb again, moms have the option to “carry” their babies with a handy, comfortable carrier or sling. In honor of International Babywearing Week, we spoke to babywearing expert, Rachel Figueroa-Levin and her Urban Babywearing partner, Gillian Foreman, and asked them to share their babywearing secrets and tips. Traveling the city with a baby, diaper bag and a baby carriage is no easy feat. However, if you have a baby carrier, getting around—and getting things done— is a lot easier. Baby carriers comes in all shapes, sizes and features and can be customized (slings especially) to suit how you feel comfortable carrying your child. Established in 2012, Urban Babywearing experts, Gillian and Rachel, have been helping hundreds of new moms. Rachel explains what babywearing actually is and how it can work for you. What are some of the benefits of babywearing? The benefits of babywearing are endless. I can get things done around the house without having to sacrifice bonding time with my baby. I can climb up subway stairs without lugging a stroller. I can nurse my daughter and get work done on my computer. What are some of the misconceptions? Misconceptions include your baby never learning to walk (that’s just silly), and throwing out your back (if anything, babywearing has made my core stronger). What are the best babywearing carriers and slings? No two mothers are exactly the same, and as such no single carrier is going to be the best carrier for every single mom. That being said, I’ve used the same ring sling for my almost three-year-old since she was an infant. take a class. There is a ton of learning opportunities throughout the city. When do you recommend moms stop wearing their babies? There’s no set age limit for babywearing. My daughter’s almost three and still travels on my back a lot. Babywearing, like any parenting practice, should be about what works best for your family. Don’t ever let someone make you feel bad for how you transport your child. If it’s safe and it works, rock it. So in honor of International Babywearing Week, join the babywearing movement by taking a class near you. Urban Babywearing will be joining forces with Cindy DeJesus of Little Jewel Daycare to host a carrier swap and social on Sun., Oct. 13th from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Little Jewel on 4915 Broadway, Suite 2M. She can be reached at info@ youngurbanmoms.com. What are some of the biggest babywearing mistakes new moms make? One of the biggest mistakes moms can make is to use their carrier incorrectly, which can result in an unsafe babywearing experience for both mom and baby. If you are unsure about how you’re carrying your baby, ask a babywearing mom for advice and 10 Whether you use a sling or a carrier, join in the celebration of International Babywearing Week. A godfather will do, too. For the past quarter of a century, the Dominican Women’s Development Center (DWDC), or El Centro, as it is known to many, has helped more than 100,000 women in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx. They serve the real necessities of immigrant families with programs that offer English and Spanish literacy, early childhood education, health and anti-domestic violence. But as their 25th Anniversary Gala approaches, Romero, the program’s co-founder and Executive Director, is thinking ahead. And the Bronx is ever more in her sights. She wants to establish a badly needed day care center for the community. In addition, she’d like to put it inside a permanent home. DWDC’s 55 employees are spread out over five locations. “We need to purchase a building,” she said. “Being property owners would give us more stability.” Owning their own building would lessen their chances of being priced out of the community, a situation happening to many local residents. 15 - Oct. 15 During her tenure as executive director, Romero has seen a lot of changes in the local Dominican community. New immigrants from the Dominican Republic are no longer moving directly to Northern Manhattan. “They are going mostly to the Bronx because the rents are cheaper,” Romero said. “People who are recent arrivals cannot afford the rents in Washington Heights.” The current Dominican community is more settled, she said. The previous generations of immigrants laid the foundation for a newly emerging professional class of young people. I Love the Bronx Yo Amo El Bronx Pelham Bay Park By Nilka Martell A It’s not a secret that Pelham Bay Park is my favorite city park. I have awesome childhood memories of the park, beach, Bartow-Pell mansion, horse stable, beaten paths in the forest leading to the erratic glacial coastline, views of small islands and aquatic wildlife. It was magical. And it still is. September was a very productive month in the park. On Sun., Sept. 22nd, the Hutchinson River Restoration Project hosted its Third Annual Thomas Pell Wildlife Sanctuary Clean-up. The New York City Park Rangers provided canoes for access to areas along the bank and to other islands in the river. Dozens of volunteers made their way to designated sites and all sorts of trash was collected. And we learned something new. My son, who also volunteered, and I stayed largely on the coastline. As we picked up garbage, we came across several horseshoe crab shells. They were all different sizes. He collected them in a separate bag to show a park ranger. The ranger later explained that similar to a snake shedding its skin, a horseshoe crab sheds its shell. Later in the afternoon, we gathered with hundreds of people for the Native American Festival. Held near the south picnic area, the Festival offers an opportunity to celebrate the Native American culture. Taino, Seminole and Cherokee are only a few of the tribes represented. The master of ceremony was Bobby González Por: Nilka Martell C omo parte de nuestra serie en curso de BFP que destaca los espacios favoritos, las cosas y las personas de nuestra ciudad, nos dirigimos a Nilka Martell, quien continúa explorando su condado natal. s part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown. “I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent. A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx. Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable. “I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.” Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.” Parque Pelham Bay The Native American Festival featured dancers and perfomers. and the magic of the drums and song was delivered by Silvercloud Singers. Colorfully detailed garments were worn by dancers. Each jewel and pattern has its own significance. The dancers were intergenerational, making it appealing to all. They led a communal dance with over 100 participants. Then on Sept. 29th, the footwear company Merrell hosted the Down and Dirty Mud Run in Orchard Beach (located within Pelham Park). This is the fourth year the event has been held at this site. The obstacle courses are military inspired, and there is lots of mud. One of the Run’s best features is the one-mile obstacle course for kids. “The Down and Dirty Mud Run brings a whole new audience to the park. We love it!” says Park Administrator Marianne Anderson. “Pelham Bay Park is the ‘Great Outdoors of New York City.’ People are surprised to find out that the Bronx has rugged hiking trails, beautiful waterfront and dense forests. We provided a perfect venue for the Mud Run. It was a successful event and there were a lot of happy, muddy people out here.” It was great to see how excited folks were when they crossed the finished line. One gentleman somersaulted his way down the line! Pelham Bay Park features activities all year round. For more information, please visit www. nycgovparks.org/parks/pelhambaypark. Horseshoe crab shells. What don’t I have?” she said. “I am my own history.” García started drawing at age seven. From early on she knew being artist requires bravery and sincerity. “You have to have a lot of integrity because you have to make sure that things are not fake or are not trendy,” she said. “If you want to be a voice of your times you really have to be clear about what you want and how you want to portray that.” Tammy Nguyen A book with many layers of meaning and myth “I was trying to think of different ways that children dress up as heroes,” explains Tammy Nguyen. A trip to Vietnam inspired Tammy Nguyen’s fanciful use of a hoodie in the Lehman show. She saw Vietnamese women covered from head to fingers in hoodies patterned in colorful floral and geometric prints. “They look like bushes of flowers as they shimmy across the road on their scooters,” Nguyen said. Hoodies protect skin from the sun. “It has a lot to do with the stigma of not wanting to become dark-skinned and wanting to be pale as possible,” she said. “It’s common for women in Vietnam to use cosmetics to bleach their skin.” Nguyen’s work, Water Feathers and Golden Hands is a hand-bound book roughly the same size and shape as a child wearing a hoodie. Glasses that look like hands conceal the eyes. The book opens in two places—at the eyes and at the torso. Together they create one narrative. When the book is closed, the child’s hands rest in a traditional figure of respect to elders. That same posture is also used when people are laid to rest. When open, the book morphs into a flying form—similar to a caped superhero. “I was trying to think of different ways that children dress up as heroes in pretend games,” she said. “Like a hoodie that becomes a magic cloak.” The child’s parents are birds—the father is an owl and the mother is a hawk. As the story unfolds, the pages reveal the child’s bird-like organs. The birds they try to protect their offspring and offer help. But their avian advice isn’t want the child needs. Their understanding of the world is vastly different from their child’s. Nguyen said avian mythology is a proxy for human experience. “I try to find surrogates that would talk about screwed up human conditions that you can’t talk about through the depiction of humans,” she said. 16 Morphology of the Print Now through January 8, 2014 Reception: October 21, 6 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Morphology of the Print examines the form and structure of contemporary printmaking and includes works that push the boundaries of the medium or explore its strategies and techniques in new ways. Paulette Shomo, the President of the Marble Hill Houses Tenants Association, warned residents that they shouldn’t let their guard down just because the buildings will be receiving cameras. “We know that we have been waiting a long time for these cameras, but they’re here now. I hope that these cameras can protect you. But you have to protect yourself. You never know who is behind you, beside you, or hiding under the stairwell,” she said. Commissioner Rhea said that efforts to install cameras in 86 of the city’s NYCHA housing complexes started earlier this year. “We’re on track to have cameras in all buildings by the end of the year,” he said. Across the river in Inwood, cameras have already been installed in the Dyckman Houses. There are 29 new cameras in the seven Dyckman Houses, which received $465,000 in allocations from Councilmember Rodríguez. The 11 Marble Hill Houses will have 53 cameras. The cameras will likely be placed in elevators, entrances, street corners and equipment rooms; residents will have input as to where they are placed. The cameras are closed-circuit television cameras, and the footage will be relayed directly to the nearest police precinct. Nonetheless, some Marble Hill residents expressed skepticism that the cameras would be installed. “We’ll see,” said Marrero. “There was a light out in the hallway of my building for four months,” said Phil Torres. “Veremos”, dijo Marrero. OCTOBER 09, 2013 • the bronx free press • www.thebronxfreepress.com 19 Fighting for responsible solutions that will strengthen Social Security and Medicare By Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez Executive Vice President, Multicultural Markets and Engagement AARP I Medicare and Social Security provide health and retirement security to millions of Latinos, but the programs face long-term financial challenges that must be addressed. Yet, too many politicians in Washington say the only answer is to cut the benefits you’ve earned or force you to pay more. AARP is on your side – fighting to protect Medicare and Social Security for you and your children and grandchildren. Last year, AARP launched You’ve Earned a Say – a national conversation about the future of Medicare and Social Security. We engaged 6.5 million people, helping them make their voices heard in Washington. The message they sent was clear – we need responsible solutions to Medicare and Social Security, not harmful cuts that will hurt you and your family. Right now, there is a proposal on the table in Washington that would hurt Latino seniors, women, people with disabilities and veterans who’ve sacrificed so much for this great country. It is called chained CPI – a fancy Washington term that really means cutting Social Security benefits to reduce the deficit – costing the average senior $2000 over the next ten years alone. The cut would start now and get larger every year; hurting seniors the most as they age and spend down their savings. The proposal would also hurt women because they tend to live longer and earn less money; people with disabilities, who tend to receive benefits for a longer period of time, and disabled veterans who would see their veterans and Social Security benefits cut. If you already receive Social Security, check this online tool to find out how much you might lose with chained CPI and make your voice heard. Go to: aarp.org/ whatyoulose. Most older Americans agree with AARP and stand against chained CPI, regardless of political views. A recent survey shows 84% of voters 50 and older are against cutting Social Security benefits to reduce the nation’s deficit. Some politicians in Washington are also talking about harmful cuts to Medicare, such as adding new 20 Op/Ed copayments on top of the premiums, deductibles and other costs Medicare doesn’t pick up. AARP believes we need responsible solutions that keep Medicare strong by reducing costs throughout the health care system. We can start by clamping down on high costs from drug companies, improving coordinated care for patients, and reducing and eliminating waste, fraud and abuse of resources, like over-testing. More effective care coordination will reduce medical errors; help prevent dangerous, preventable hospital readmissions; ensure patients are getting recommended care, and save taxpayer dollars. By creating systems that connect doctors and health care facilities more effectively and make better use of information technology, we can ensure that patients receive safer, higher quality care. For most Latino seniors, Medicare and Social Security are critical to their health and financial security. For some, they are the only financial and health care resources available to them. Those living in multigenerational families help contribute to their households with their Social Security income. Medicare benefits also mean less stress on loved ones because seniors have means to help cover their own health care needs. You’ve Earned a Say conversations are happening around the country. Find out if there’s one in your community and join in. Remember, you’ve worked hard to earn your benefits for you and your family, it’s not right that anyone should make changes to them – especially changes with a negative impact – without your input. “No matter what you look like or what you sound like we judge you on your character,” he said. One out of every 700 live births in the United States results in a cleft lip or palate, according to Susannah Schaefer, the Vice Chair of Smile Train’s Board of Directors and the charity’s Chief Executive Officer. In the developing world, one out of every thousand live births yields an infant with a cleft palate or cleft lip. While not life-threatening, a cleft lip or palate can prove more than just an aesthetic concern. It can be debilitating. “Yes, it’s a facial deformity, but it’s so much more. Children can’t eat properly or speak properly,” said Schaefer. Also, those with cleft palates can be ostracized, and are less likely to go to school or be gainfully employed. Growing up with a cleft palate in a developing country like India, which has 39,300 cleft births per year, and where 32.7 percent of the population is living below the poverty line, adds an additional hurdle. On World Smile Day, Schaefer said she had much reason to beam. “It’s kids helping kids. It doesn’t get any better than that,” she said. Rita Henry, who is the Parent Coordinator at MS 180 as well as the school’s Project BOOST Director, the President of the MS 180 community team and the Head Step Team Coach, couldn’t agree more. It was the students, said Henry, who decided to help support the millions of other children in the world who have cleft lips and palates after learning about the condition during their Project BOOST classes. “They say, ‘Miss Rita, we are so blessed, we want to help others’,” she said. “A lot of kids can’t go to school because of their cleft palate,” she added. The MS 180 step team also added smiles to the day as they performed. One former member of the step team was present that day: Devyn Abdullah, the winner of Oxygen’s modeling competition The Face. Abdullah, known largely by her first name alone, was more than a guest. She was an alumnus of MS 180. And she used to be on the step team coached by Henry. “I remember being in these kids’ places,” she said. “I know everyone here—I’m supporting, but I’m at home.” While Friday’s event was the first she’d done together with Smile Train, she said she would be attending more events and making donations. “I just love supporting anything that has to do with changing people’s lives. I’m a mother of a two-year-old, so that’s where my heart is at.” It made simple sense to Devyn. “If you can spend $250 on a 40-minute surgery that will change someone’s life, why not?” SOBRO from p4 He also wants to establish a start-up kitchen in the Bronx for other culinary entrepreneurs. Brenda Evans, another broker on the tour, has had a long history with the Bronx. Evans is an independent broker who experienced the borough when she first moved to the city from Los Angeles over 20 years ago. “It’s like the Bronx won’t leave me alone, and I won’t leave it alone,” she laughed. Decades ago, Evans accompanied a friend to a jeweler in the Bronx to find a present for her daughter, and the jeweler ended up offering her a job. “He pointed to a desk in the corner and said, ‘That’s your desk. I want to see you here Monday morning.’ It was almost like fate.” A few years later, she got her broker’s license and sold residences near Lehman College. Evans was not surprised at the growth she had seen on the tour. “The Bronx is doing exactly what I thought it’d be doing 20 years ago. The people are warm and friendly; there’s ten thousand rice and bean restaurants, and the Bronx people are the realest of everyone in New York City,” she said. “When I do deals in the Bronx I get invited back for baby showers, weddings, graduations—you can feel people’s heartbeat.” There was also the matter of doing business in the Bronx—which seemed for many like the final affordable frontier of the city. Morrow noted the number of brokers on the tour. “They’re doing transactions and want to be aware of what’s going on.” While the tour offered much for Morrow of which to be proud, he explained that he felt his greatest accomplishment as head of SoBRO is its headquarters at 555 Bergen Avenue, where the tour began and ended. The headquarters occupies a building that had been vacant for 25 years. “I look at that as a major accomplishment. It made a tremendous difference in the Hub.” The Hub is the area near 138th and Third Avenue. Nearby is the largest piece of unallocated city land in Bronx Community Board 1. The 184,000 square foot parcel is currently a bucolic looking lot verdant with grass and mature trees. The city made a request for proposals earlier this year. Morrow hopes SoBro will be rewarded the land so it can build a mixed residential building with 130,000 square feet of retail space. “The Bronx is it,” gushed broker Evans.
