Page 2 Pentecost Sunday The Wind and Fire Within There is a tremendous love affair going on, of which the Holy Spirit is the witness. For what were we created? For a love affair with God! For a oneness with God that nothing can break. For this the Holy Spirit has come. For this, the symbol of the Wind is lifting us up. For this, the symbol of Fire cleanses us and makes our soul afire with love. . . . Here Christ says something fantastic that should send shivers down our spines, that we should hold in our hearts and never let go: “As the Father sends me, so I am sending you.” He said it to the apostles, but what he says is meant for you and me. And it means that we have to go. Whoever we are, old or young, rich or poor—what is our real vocation? Whatever other vocations God might send us, the very essential vocation of the Christian is apostolic. An apostle is one who is sent by someone bigger than himself. That is you and me. It does not matter if we have any education. Nothing matters, because he has sent us, and he has said, “Open your mouth and I will speak.” On the feast of Pentecost the Holy Spirit, Wind and Fire, came to teach us what to say. We must have no worries, no inferiority complexes, because we are God’s. “As my Father sends me, so I am sending you.” To do what? To preach the Good News. The Good News is the incarnation, life, crucifixion, resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the affirmation of the new covenant: Love your God with your whole heart, your whole mind, your whole soul; and love your neighbour as yourself. He said, “By this you shall be known as my disciples: that you love one another as I have loved you.” So: “As my Father sent me, so I am sending you. Show them that you are my disciples. Love one another as I have loved you.” The Holy Spirit comes as Fire and Wind to cleanse the heart so there is no impediment for God to pass through. Whether we are rich or poor, learned or unlearned—there are so many services to be done. Even those who are sick or incapacitated in some way show the features of Christ; there is a “usefulness of uselessness.” After all, the most useful hours that Christ spent on this earth were on the cross, though they seem utterly useless from our pragmatic point of view. These are the verities that the Holy Spirit will bring to us. Let us open ourselves not only to the Wind that blows away all leaves and all trash, but also to the Fire that burns and cleanses at the same time. We can have the Fire and the Wind touch us, because that is what the Holy Spirit came for. —Catherine de Hueck Doherty, Give Us This Day May 19, 2013 You are invited to Deacon Peter Nguyen’s 25th Anniversary Celebration! Saturday, May 25th 5:00pm Mass followed by dinner in the Parish Hall Join us as we celebrate Deacon Peter’s 25th Anniversary of Ordination. We honor him for his dedication to the Catholic Church and to his years of dedication to our community here at St. Didacus. Deacon Peter’s family will be bringing Vietnamese food for this special occasion. You are welcome to bring a dish to share. Everyone is invited to share in the celebration! CALL ON THE HOLY SPIRIT The action that the Holy Spirit carries out, in guiding the Church and within each of us, was the theme chosen by Pope Francis for his catechesis in his general audience on May 15th: “This is a prayer that we need to say every day: 'Holy Spirit, make my heart open to God's Word so that my heart might be open to good, so that my heart might be open to God's beauty every day.' Let me ask you: how many of you pray to the Holy Spirit every day? It will be few of you, but we must satisfy this desire for Jesus and pray every day to the Holy Spirit that He might open our hearts to Jesus.” REST IN PEACE † ISMAEL BACA We will have a funeral Mass for Ismael on Friday, June 7th at 11am. Please keep him and his family in your prayers. May is a month traditionally On our cover is an artist’s depiction of a scene from the Pentecost that appears in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. The feast marks the occasion of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles 50 days after Christ’s resurrection. Pentecost is Greek for the 50th day. It is also referred to as the birthday of the Church because, from that point on, the Apostles carried forth the message of Christ to the world. Love is the guarantee that the Life of Spirit is growing in us. Love is the sign of the Holy Spirit at work in the Church and in the world.” —Thomas Merton Kid’s Corner Jesus said: “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.” Find the fruits of the Holy Spirit in the word search below. Charity Chastity Faithfulness Generosity Gentleness Goodness May 19, 2013 Joy Patience Kindness Peace Modesty Self-Control dedicated to honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary. In our churches and homes, we celebrate May as a “Marian month,” with May processions, May crownings, and other popular devotions in honor of the Mother of God. This Marian month falls during the liturgical season of Easter. We thus particularly emphasize Our Blessed Mother’s participation in the Paschal Mystery and her presence with the Church in preparation for Pentecost, as she prayed with the disciples in the upper room while they awaited the descent of the Holy Spirit. In the month of May, the Church calls us to open our hearts in a special way to Mary. Her presence in our lives is a motherly presence. We call her Our Blessed Mother. Indeed, from the Cross, Jesus gave her to us as our Mother and entrusted us to her as her children. Jesus’ words to John, the beloved disciple, were also addressed to all of us: Behold your mother! From the cross, Jesus gave us the beautiful gift of his mother to be our mother, too. He made his mother the mother of all the members of his Mystical Body, the Church. Jesus invites us to accept Mary as our mother and to respond to her motherly love as true children. Catholic devotion to Mary is, therefore, based on the will of Christ. Blessed John Paul II explained that “the words, Behold your mother!, express Jesus’ intention to inspire in his disciples an attitude of love for and trust in Mary, leading them to recognize her as their mother, the mother of every believer. At the school of the Virgin, the disciples learn to know the Lord deeply, as John did, and to have an intimate and lasting relationship of love with him. They also discover the joy of entrusting themselves to the Mother’s maternal love, living like affectionate and docile children.” Mary always leads us to Jesus, her Son. When we go to her, we always meet Jesus, our Savior. She helps us follow her Son more faithfully. May we all, like Saint John, take Mary into our home and make room for her in our daily lives. God has entrusted to her the role of maternal intercession for us. She is Our Mother of Perpetual Help: she sees our needs and is ready to come to our aid. She is especially close to those who are suffering. The most ancient Marian prayer expresses Mary’s role as our advocate: We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.” Mary presents our needs to her Son and intercedes continually on our behalf. May the Mother given to us by Christ on the cross be ever at our side!
