ILLINOIS CONGRESSMAN AND IMMIGRATION REFORM
CHAMPION LUIS GUTIÉRREZ VISITS OREGON

On Sunday, April 26, Illinois congressman and immigration reform champion Luis V. Gutiérrez made a stop in
Oregon during his nationwide tour. His mission has been
to educate immigrant families about the president’s
executive actions on immigration that expanded
the successful DACA program and created the new
DAPA program for parents of U.S. citizens and legal
permanent resident children. Congressman Gutiérrez’s visit was coordinated by Causa Oregon, PCUN
and the Capaces Leadership Institute.
During an afternoon community forum in Woodburn, Congressman Gutiérrez highlighted the importance of President Obama’s deferred action programs
and the urgency for the United States Congress to
pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill with
a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented
immigrants and to keep families together.
Discussing President Obama’s deferred action
programs and larger push for immigration reform
legislation, the congressman expressed that he is
happy and pleased that 5 million immigrants can
get protection from deportation and a work permit,
and added that he will “not rest until the day arrives
in this country when each parent who goes to work
has the same guarantee as I have in this country to return
to my family.”
Speaking to the drawn-out court battle around the
deferred action programs, Gutiérrez said, “I am not frustrated, nor am I tired or discouraged. Quite the opposite. I
have a commitment to those who have absolutely nobody
to raise their voice.” He added, “The fight will always be
long...We have 700,000 young dreamers who have work
permits—that is something you have achieved. There are
thousands of families who have been not been deported
grant workers, not be degrading to that community. We have
a common roof. A common roof that unites us—that when
they attack us we can defend ourselves. It doesn’t matter if
you are Dominican or Venezuelan, Puerto Rican, Mexican,
Guatemalan—if you’re Latino, you are in this fight united.”
Discussing the political future of the Latino community, the congressman finished by saying, “We
are big and strong and we are growing in numbers,
but we are also growing in power and influence in
this country.”
According to his website, Congressman Gutiérrez is in his 12th term and a senior member of the
Illinois delegation in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is an experienced legislator and energetic
spokesman on behalf of his constituents in Illinois’
4th District in the heart of Chicago, who first elected
him to his seat in 1992.

En los ataques contra los inmigrantes y su oposición al
presidente de los programas de acción diferida y la reforma
de inmigración, dijo Gutiérrez, “Tenemos que aplaudir las
manos de los trabajadores inmigrantes, y no ser degradante
para esa comunidad. Tenemos un techo común. Un techo
común que nos une, que cuando nos atacan podemos
defendernos. No importa si son dominicanos o Venezolanos, puertorriqueños, mexicanos, guatemaltecos y si eres
Latino, que están unidos en esta lucha”.
Discutir el futuro político de la comunidad latina, el

estamos creciendo en número, pero también estamos creciendo en poder e influencia en este país”.

IN SEARCH OF
DECENCY

Mahatma Gandhi once
observed that the measure of a
great nation is in how it takes care
of its most vulnerable. I can think of no one more vulnerable than our children. It is a self-evident truth. Unassailable and indisputable.
And yet, according to a study commissioned by my
organization, the Oregon Latino Health Coalition, there
are close to 20,000 children in our state who are excluded
from Oregon’s promise—20,000 children who were left
out of the Health Care for All Children bill and are barred
from receiving health care services.
Children who were brought here by their parents—20,000 children fleeing wars, genocide and economic displacement of our own making.
And these children, our children, Oregon’s children, go
each day without life-saving medical care.
But this is not who we are. This is not who we are meant
to be, does not speak to the best in us. So we have returned
to this capitol to ask Oregon to do the right thing by these
children. And we have marched into this august house
where our state’s laws are made, to ask for redress of our
children’s exclusion from Oregon’s promise.
Each day we drive down to meet with legislators to
ask them to do the right thing. Largely, no one wishes
to talk about it. Legislators on both sides of the aisle are
very reluctant to stand with us, with our children. They
have taken the resounding defeat of driver’s cards for
undocumented workers as a clear message that anyone
who stands for immigrant-related issues will be punished at election time. And yet, the truth is that all those
who stood with us on driver’s cards got re-elected, without exception.
Still, reactions from these elected officials are mixed.
Some nod politely, promise to study the issue further.
We met with a kind grower-legislator who wants to do
the right thing but is caught between the right thing
and a hard place. On my way out of his office, he offered
me a pear picked by the farmworkers who work for him
and who are our children’s fathers and mothers. It was
bitter, this fruit.
Others are more pointed. Last week I found myself with
a legislator who stated unapologetically, “We should just
take over Mexico! And I don’t support providing health care
to illegals. It sends the message that they can just come
here and have anchor babies!”

“Children—these are children,” I said. His comments
made me sick to my stomach. I could not eat for days.
We even met with a legislator who is a doctor, whose
sacred oath is to serve and provide care, but who called
our children “illegals” and doesn’t think they should have
access to care. And all we can do, all I am permitted to do
is ask him, how does he circumscribe his compassion for
these children?
We try to reason with them, to appeal to their humanity. Largely, it is nowhere to be found. But I cannot yet
understand in what religion, in which of God’s kingdoms
it is possible and permitted to label children as “illegal,”
or to punish them.
As a nation, I believe, we settled this question long,
long ago: that the sins of the fathers shall not be visited
upon their children. That is, we do not punish children for
the decisions their parents have made. We do not encumber children with the debts of their fathers. We are better
than this. More enlightened. More compassionate. More
decent. I hold out hope.
It is easy to conclude that these
children upon our
teeming shores are
a problem. But it is
possible that these
children instead
represent a burning question to our
great state. It is possible that these children are a tender,
living question
about what kind
of state we wish to
be. That is, are we a
state that chooses,
as its first reflex,
to punish children
for the sins of their
fathers? If so, how
have we come to
that and what does
it say about us and our humanity?
No, these children are not the problem. These children
are instead a barometer of our compassion.
In the face of this, our optimism may seem unfounded,
even irrational. But it is who we are. It is in our DNA—our
own tender migration, itself an exercise in hope, an irrational optimism reaching out.
But there are surprises too: unexpected friends in unexpected places; quiet, dignified shows of support hinting
at what we can and must be.
So we stand, ready to be surprised with unexpected
kindness.
Representative Alissa Keny-Guyer and Speaker Tina
Kotek are examples of this. Rep. Keny-Guyer has been
unwavering in her support and Speaker Kotek has rallied
her colleagues, asking them to stand with our children.
And then we learned that a Republican legislator would
co-sponsor our bill, Representative Vic Gilliam—a legislator and unlikely ally from Silverton who agreed to carry
the bill, against his party’s wishes.
In this sojourn toward justice, I have come close to
being rendered by all the unkind things said about our
children. But it was this unexpected, irrational show of
kindness that has rendered me.
You see, Rep. Gilliam has nothing to win and everything
to lose by standing with us, by standing for our children,
by doing the right thing—which makes his irrational act
of kindness all the more courageous.
And yet he did, came before his colleagues on a
spring afternoon to testify in support of our bill. He
acknowledged his differences with President Obama’s
signature health care bill, but said in the eloquent
lang uage of justice,

t h ing to do. That it
is t he decent t h i ng
to do, for these children who go to school
w ith our children—
who are here, who are
Oregonians, who are
us.”
And I was rendered
by this, rendered completely a nd beyond
repair, by t his irrational act of kindness
and compassion. You
see, it is not unlikely
that he will face some
form of censure from
his own party, almost
c e r t a i n t h a t t he r e
REP. VIC GILLIAM AND REP. ALISSA KENY-GUYER will be an associated
political cost. And yet,
knowing this, he still chose to stand with us. To stand
for our children.
Rep. Keny-Guyer and Rep. Gilliam show us a way forward, show us what we can and must be. And I am proud
to stand with them.
But we are not done. Our bill now moves to the Senate,
where it faces an uphill battle. But we return and will
return again to this capital to ask our elected officials to
do the right thing, to do the decent thing.
And we will continue to engage in irrational, unbounded
optimism. Join us. Join us in our beautiful, irrational optimism! Si, se puede!

reelegido, sin excepción. Aún así, las reacciones de estos funcionarios electos son mixtos. Algunos nod
cortésmente, la promesa de estudiar más
a fondo la cuestión. Nos hemos reunido
con una especie de legislador que quiere
hacer lo correcto pero queda atrapado

“Los niños son los niños”, me dijo. Sus
comentarios me puso enfermo a mi
estómago. Yo no podía comer por varios
días. Incluso se reunió con el legislador
nacional, que es un médico, que es sagrado
juramento de servir y dar atención, pero
que nuestros hijos “ilegales” y no piensan que deben tener acceso a la atención
médica. Y todo lo que podemos hacer,
todo lo que me permitió hacer es preguntarle, ¿cómo puede limitar su compasión
por estos niños?
Tratamos de razonar con ellos , apelar a
su humanidad. En gran medida, se puede
encontrar por ninguna parte. Pero todavía
no puedo comprender en qué religión, en
la que de reinos de Dios es posible y permite etiquetar a los niños como “ilegal”,
o a castigarlos. Como nación, también creo que
hemos resuelto esta cuestión hace mucho,
mucho tiempo: que los pecados de los
padres no serán visitados en sus hijos. Es
decir, no castigar a los niños por las decisiones sus padres han hecho. No gravar los
niños con las deudas de sus padres. Somos
mejores que este. Más iluminada. Más
compasiva. Más decente. Tengo esperanza.
Es fácil concluir que los hijos de estos
abundan en nuestras costas son un problema. Pero es posible que estos niños representan una de las cuestiones candentes
de nuestro gran estado. Es posible que
estos niños son una licitación, viven pregunta acerca de qué tipo de estado queremos ser, es decir, que somos un estado que
elige, como su primera reflex, para castigar
a los niños por los pecados de sus padres?
Si es así, ¿cómo hemos llegado a esto y lo
que se dice acerca de nosotros y de nuestra humanidad?
No, estos niños no son el problema.

puede parecer infundada, incluso irracional. Pero es lo que somos. Está en nuestro
ADN de nuestra propia oferta migración,
sí un ejercicio de esperanza, de un optimismo irracional llegar. Pero también hay sorpresas: inesperado amigos en lugares inesperados; silencioso, digna muestra de apoyo apunten a
lo que puede y debe ser. Por lo tanto, espera, listo para ser sorprendido con inesperada bondad. Representante Alissa Ken-Guyer y

tipo de censura de su propio partido, casi
seguro que habrá un costo político. Y,
sin embargo, sabiendo esto, que todavía
optan por estar con nosotros. Para nuestros niños. Sust. Keny-Guyer y Rep. Gilliam nos
muestran un camino a seguir, nos enseñan
lo que puede y debe ser. Y me siento
orgulloso de estar con ellos. Pero no se realizan. Nuestro proyecto
de ley pasa ahora al Senado, donde se

CORTE CIERRA ESTAFA DE REPARACIÓN DE CRÉDITO

presuntamente plantean como afiliado de la FTC en el mercado crédito falsas servicios de reparación a los
consumidores de habla

impulsando nuevas discusiones sobre el fraude
en la asesoría de crédito.

obtener testimonios y oír
los argumentos de si hay
que ampliar un 27 de marzo que detuvo las operaciones
de un área de Los Angeles empresa llamada Primera Vez
Crédito soluciones. El recurso fue la respuesta de la corte
a la FTC alega que denuncia que la empresa comercializa
como FTC Credit soluciones falsas y utilizó su afiliación
con el organismo de crédito fraudulentas vender servicios
de reparación a los hablantes de español.

COURT SHUTS DOWN CREDIT REPAIR
SCAM THAT TARGETED LATINOS

At the request of the Federal Trade Commission, a court has halted the operations
of a company that allegedly posed as an
affiliate of the FTC to market bogus credit
repair services to Spanish-speaking consumers, legal action that is prompting new
discussions about fraud in the credit counseling industry.
The U.S. District Court in Los Angeles
this week is expected to obtain depositions
and hear arguments on whether to extend a
March 27 injunction that halted the operations of a Los Angeles-area company called
First Time Credit Solutions. The injunction
was the court’s response to an FTC complaint that alleges that the company marketed itself as FTC Credit Solutions and
used its false affiliation with the agency
to sell fraudulent credit repair services to
Spanish speakers.
Claiming that their company is licensed
by the federal agency, FTC Credit Solutions
guaranteed consumers a credit score of 700
or above within six months or less, the complaint says. The defendants also told some
consumers that the company could change
negative reports that are accurate, according to the FTC complaint.
“Peddling lies under the name of the
Federal Trade Commission to target consumers who are in difficult financial situations is appalling,” said Jessica Rich, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.
“This scam used the promise of a fresh
start to hurt consumers when they most
needed help, so we are pleased the court
has taken a first step to ending it for good.”
Consumer complaints about scammers claiming federal affiliations have been
rising. In 2014, the number of such complaints was nearly 24 times larger than the
number of such reports in 2013, according to the FTC. However, the vast majority
of those complaints involved scam artists
impersonating IRS officials as part of identity theft schemes.
The FTC complaint against First Time
Credit Solutions, based in the city of Bell
in Metropolitan Los Angeles, is generating
a buzz in the credit counseling industry. For
example, the National Association of Credit
Service Organizations (NASCO) last week
issued a statement designed to disassociate
its members from credit repair scammers.
“NACSO supports regulatory enforcement efforts to root out ‘bad actors’ posing
to be legitimate providers of credit repair
services,” the statement said. “The alleged
egregious behavior is unlawful and it
appears the FTC appropriately responded
swiftly. NACSO represents the professional
credit repair industry and its standards of
excellence and code of conduct is centered
on ethics and integrity in serving consumers.”

affiliation with the Federal Trade Commission, the FTC complaint says. The agency
used undercover investigators to probe the
company.
One company employee told an FTC
investigator that the company “works
under the Federal Trade Commission,
which is a law that was signed by the president in 2010,” the complaint says. That
employee falsely promised that the company could “delete” and “get [the investigator] a pardon” for $19,000 in debt, the
FTC says. The agency also alleges that FTC
Credit Solutions falsely claimed that it could
delete individuals’ bankruptcy records.
In addition, the company unlawfully
charged consumers fees in advance of providing the promised credit repair services,
the complaint says. The company charged
$2,000 per person, according to the FTC.
The Federal Trade Commission files
court complaints when it has “reason
to believe” it has identified violations of
law. The FTC Credit Solutions case will be
decided by the court. Under the terms of
the court’s restraining order, the company
has temporarily ceased operations and the
defendants’ assets are frozen.
HOW TO AVOID CREDIT REPAIR
SCAMS:
The following is based on advisories
from the Federal Trade Commission.
No one can legally remove accurate
information from a credit report. You can
ask for a free investigation of information
in your file that you dispute as inaccurate
or incomplete. Some hire a company to
investigate for them. However, anything a
credit repair company can do, you can do
for yourself. Here are some of your rights
and options:
• You are entitled to a free credit report if
a company takes adverse action against you
such as denying your application for credit,
insurance or employment. You have to ask
for your report within 60 days of receiving
notice of the action.
• If you discover inaccurate information, inform the credit reporting company
in writing and include copies of any documents that support your position. Credit
reporting companies must investigate the
items you question within 30 days.
• Under law, credit repair companies are
not allowed to intentionally misinform you
about what they can do for you and they
are prohibited from charging you before
they’ve performed their services.
• The Credit Repair Organization Act,
enforced by the FTC, requires credit repair
companies to provide a contract that
explains your legal rights, the following
information among them: details on the
services they’ll perform, your three-day
right to cancel without any charge, and the

Q & A WITH VICTORIA LARA: “YOU HAVE THE
POWER TO CREATE AND DELIVER MIRACLES”
1. SHARE BRIEFLY YOUR JOURNEY TO PORTLAND, OREGON.
I came to the U.S.A. to Trinidad, Colorado to study English in 1997. A friend then recommended me to work with a ministry of youth Latinas on various topics such as leadership, goals, values, etc.… in Vancouver, Washington, and I decided to go for it. I had a
house and the necessary things to get by, but I knew I needed money to help my family
back home in Mexico.
In order to create additional income, I cleaned houses, cut hair, babysat, etc. until I
finally got a full-time job at a Mexican restaurant where I started as a dishwasher. With time
I moved from a dishwasher to being a busser, a hostess,
a waitress and a bartender. From there I moved to work
into a management role, helping manage a couple of
Mexican restaurants, which I then helped promote
and market, as well as being an accountant for them.
Later on, I got invited to work with Roy Larson
Agency, after I did a series of TV spots for a Realtor.
2.NAME OF YOUR BUSINESS AND YEAR
STARTED?
Today my business name is Lara Media Services,
LLC. When I first started in 1999, it was called Victoria Lara Advertising.
3.SHARE WITH US A BRIEF HISTORY OF ITS
FOUNDING AND ITS GROWTH.
One time Roy Larson came to my cubicle and asked
me if pineapples were popular within the Latino culture, and I said “yes.” I then followed him around when
he was talking with a national buyer for a very wellknown supermarket chain, and the national buyer
had called Roy and asked him if it was a good idea to
buy tons and tons of pineapples. Roy said “yes.” Once
I knew that he had based his answer off of me, I felt
bad. I could not believe it and I was worried—thinking that a big investment was based off of my answer.
That night after torturing myself, I thought if he
could do it—make those types of decisions for the
better of his company—I could do it too. I know what
Latinos like, the language, the struggles, the food, the
culture, etc.… And I felt competent enough to start
my own company in which I could create a positive
change and impact by helping other people make
the best decision for their business. I then gave him
my two weeks’ notice and decided to start my own
company.
4. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO START AN ADVERTISING AGENCY?
I wanted to create an identity that would serve our community in which I would help
small Latino businesses to obtain access to the main media channels. I wanted to bring
access and education to them, and see how things would help and benefit their business.
At the same time, I wanted the rest of the business to test how “booming” our Latino
market was—loyal, growing faster, etc. It was impossible not to see all the disparities and
injustice communities of color had and not being a voice for them. I have three brothers
and together we started creating and developing materials and functioning like the connector between businesses, organizations and the community.
We are still learning a lot along the way, but we have a strong passion for the communities we serve and our combined experience has served us well in making sure our clients get the best of the best.
5. WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU HAVE HAD TO OVERCOME?
The language barrier, of course, being an immigrant, not having key relationships,
lack of capital. You name it, I’ve probably dealt with it—barriers were always present.
Marketing is a men’s game, pretty much; it is hard being a woman, and most of the CEOs
and board members are male-dominated. Also, I am shy. It’s hard to believe, but I am
very conscious about my heavy accent and my less-than-perfect English.… It takes a lot

of me to go and do networking and promoting, but I’ve done it and overcame these and
many more barriers.
6. WHAT WAS/IS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR?
Failure—it is failing as a person. Not doing my best as a mom, sister, daughter, friend,
advocate, CEO, etc.… Not being able to offer the best opportunities for my family and
employees. Failure in general, but I am positive and continue each day to overcome this
to be the best person for my son, for my parents, for my employees, for my friends, clients and everyone around me.
7. HOW IS LARA MEDIA PARTNERED WITH
OTHER CULTURALLY SPECIFIC ORGANIZATIONS
TO HELP THE LATINO COMMUNITY?
We know that together we can get accomplish
greater things. As Latinos and immigrants, we share
the same challenges and needs.
We partner and help the Latino community by
serving in various boards and commissions. It will
be impossible not to fight for the same values and
share the same mission of equity. We donate time,
resources, and help fund and finance their efforts. We
are great connectors, we connect our clients to the
best resources available for them, and we help them
with their marketing needs.
We promote our clients’ events, create videos,
develop campaigns, among other things.
8. SHARE WITH OUR READERS A SUCCESS
STORY ABOUT THIS TYPE OF COLLABORATION.
Binational Health Week (BHW) is the largest mobilization effort in the Americas to improve the health
and well-being of the underserved Latino population
living in the United States and Canada. During BHW,
federal, state and local government agencies, community-based organizations and thousands of volunteers come together in the month of October to conduct a series of health promotion and health education activities including workshops, insurance referrals, vaccinations and medical screenings.
At the very beginning, years ago, the event was
held at the Mexican Consulate, at their parking lot
with 6 tables and around 100 people in attendance.
Lara Media took the leadership to make it grow,
and with the support of the Mexican consul, Ursula

Rojas—who back then was the community engagement coordinator—we developed the sponsorship
package; helped fund the event, which later became several events; brought key partners; organized, managed, coordinated, marketed this event and established a solid
foundation for success. Lara Media helped with the outreach strategies, developed
materials, brought resources, etc.... And now there are 7 to 10 events, more than 250
partners that reach more than 200,000 Latinos.

1.COMPARTIR BREVEMENTE SU VIAJE A PORTLAND, OREGON.
Llegué a los EE.UU. a la isla de Trinidad, Colorado para
estudiar inglés en 1997. Entonces, un amigo me recomendó
trabajar con un ministerio de la juventud Latinas sobre
diversos temas como liderazgo, objetivos, valores, etc.
… en Vancouver, Washington, y me decidí a ir. Yo tenía
una casa y las cosas necesarias para salir del paso, pero yo
sabía que necesitaba dinero para ayudar a mi familia en
su casa en México.
Con el fin de crear ingresos adicionales, he limpiado
casas, cortar el pelo, vigilabebés, etc. , hasta que finalmente me dieron un trabajo a tiempo completo en un
restaurante de comida mexicana en la que comenzó como
un lavavajillas. Con el tiempo me fui de un lavavajillas de
busser, una azafata, una camarera y un barman. Desde
allí, se trasladó a trabajar en una función de gestión, lo
que ayuda a administrar un par de restaurantes mexicanos, que me ayudó a promover y comercializar , así como
ser un contador para ellos. Más tarde, me invitaron a trabajar con Roy Larson,
después de hacer una serie de anuncios de televisión para
un agente de Bienes Raíces.
2.NOMBRE DE SU NEGOCIO Y COMENZÓ EL
NUEVO AÑO? Hoy mi nombre de la empresa es Lara Media Services,
LLC Cuando comencé en 1999, fue llamado Victoria Lara
Publicidad. 3. COMPARTE CON NOSOTROS UNA BREVE HISTORIA DE SU FUNDACIÓN Y DE SU CRECIMIENTO.
Una vez Roy Larson entró en mi armario y me preguntó
si las piñas eran populares dentro de la cultura latina, y
me dijo “sí .” a continuación, le siguieron cuando estaba
hablando con un comprador de un bien conocido cadena
de supermercados, y el comprador nacional había llamado Roy y le preguntó si era una buena idea comprar
toneladas y toneladas de piñas. Roy, dijo que “sí.” Una vez
que me enteré que había basado su respuesta fuera de mí,
me sentía mal. Yo no lo podía creer y me preocupaba de
pensar que una gran inversión se basa en mi respuesta.
Esa noche después de torturarlos yo, yo pensaba que si
lo podía hacer -hacer esos tipos de decisiones para el bien
de su empresa-I podría hacerlo. Yo sé lo que los Latinos ,
como la lengua, las luchas, la comida, la cultura, etc. … y me
sentí bastante competente para iniciar mi propia empresa
en la que yo podría crear un cambio positivo y el impacto
en la ayuda a otras personas a tomar la mejor decisión para
su negocio. YO entonces le dio mis dos semanas de antelación y decidió iniciar mi propia empresa. 4.¿QUÉ LA MOTIVÓ A INICIAR UNA AGENCIA
DE PUBLICIDAD?
Yo quería crear una identidad que podría prestar servicios
a nuestra comunidad en la que me gustaría ayudar a los
pequeños negocios latinos a obtener acceso a los principales
canales de comunicación, ya que quería para facilitar el
acceso y la educación, y ver cómo las cosas se ayuda y beneficiar a su negocio. Al mismo tiempo, quería que el resto de
la empresa para probar cómo “boom” en nuestro mercado
Latino fue leal, creciendo a un ritmo más rápido, etc. No se
puede dejar de ver todas las desigualdades y la injusticia
las comunidades de color y no ser la voz de ellos. Tengo
tres hermanos y juntos comenzaron a crear y desarrollar
materiales y funciona como el conector entre las empresas,
las organizaciones y la comunidad. Todavía estamos aprendiendo mucho a
lo largo de todo el camino, pero tenemos
una gran pasión por las comunidades que
servimos y nuestra experiencia nos ha servido bien para asegurar que nuestros clientes reciban el mejor de los mejores. 5.¿CUÁLES HAN SIDO ALGUNOS
DE LOS DESAFÍOS A LOS QUE SE HAN
TENIDO QUE SUPERAR?
La barrera del idioma, por supuesto,
tratándose de un inmigrante, el no tener
relaciones clave, la falta de capital. Lo que
sea, probablemente, he tratado con barreras
estaban siempre presentes. Marketing es

UNA HISTORIA DE ÉXITO DE ESTE TIPO DE COLABORACIÓN.
Semana Binacional de Salud (BHW por sus siglas en
inglés) es el mayor esfuerzo de movilización en la región
de las Américas para mejorar la salud y el
bienestar de la población latina desatendida
viven en Estados Unidos y Canadá. Durante
BHW, agencias gubernamentales locales,
estatales y federales, organizaciones basadas
en la comunidad y miles de voluntarios se
unen en el mes de octubre para llevar a
cabo una serie de la promoción de la salud
y las actividades de educación para la salud
incluyendo talleres, seguros las referencias,
las vacunas y exámenes médicos. En el principio, hace años, el evento se
realizó en el Consulado de México en su
aparcamiento con 6 tablas y alrededor de 100
personas en asistencia . Lara Media tomó
el liderazgo para hacer que crezca , y con
el apoyo del cónsul de México, Ursula
Rojas-que era entonces la participación
de la comunidad coordinador de hemos
desarrollado el paquete de patrocinio; y ha
contribuido a financiar el evento, que se
convirtió más tarde varios eventos; puso
los socios clave, organizado, dirigido,
coordinado, comercializado este evento y
establecido una base sólida para el éxito.
Lara medios de comunicación ayudaron
con las estrategias de divulgación, materiales elaborados,
recursos, etc. ... Y ahora hay 7 de 10 eventos, de los que más
de 250 socios que llega a más de 200.000 Latinos. “SABEMOS

6. ¿CUÁL FUE/ES SU MAYOR MIEDO?
No es que una persona. No estoy haciendo mis mejores
como madre, hermana, hija, amiga, abogada, GERENTE
GENERAL, etc. … no es capaz de ofrecer las mejores
oportunidades para mi familia y empleados. Fallo en
general, pero yo soy una persona positiva y continuar cada
día para superar esta como la mejor persona para mi hijo,
para mis padres, para mis empleados, para mis amigos,
clientes y todos los que me rodean. 7. ¿CÓMO SE LARA MEDIOS CULTURALMENTE SE
ASOCIÓ CON OTRAS ORGANIZACIONES ESPECÍFICAS PARA AYUDAR A LA COMUNIDAD LATINA?
Sabemos que juntos podemos lograr grandes cosas. Los
Latinos y los inmigrantes, comparten los mismos desafíos
y necesidades.
Nos hemos asociado y ayudar a la comunidad latina
en diversas juntas y comisiones. Va a ser imposible no
luchar por los mismos valores y comparten la misión de
la equidad. Donar tiempo, recursos y ayudar a financiar
y financiar sus esfuerzos. Somos grandes conectores,
podemos conectar a nuestros clientes con los mejores
recursos disponibles para ellos, y les ayudamos con sus
necesidades de marketing.

HYUNDAI 2015 SANTA FE
A Worthy Crossover Competitor

The small SUV or crossover sector is one of the most
competitive in the automotive industry. It is easy to understand this statement if I mention three names:
Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. To
break through its strong competitors, the car
we tested this week has had to “cross the jungle
with a knife in its mouth.”
Hyundai has done an excellent job maintaining the competitiveness of its crossover,
the Santa Fe. Named after the city of the same
name in New Mexico, the Santa Fe appeared in
the market in 2000. No other model has done
so much for the success of the Korean company as this one. From the beginning it was
well accepted, and Hyundai has improved its
product consistently, holding its ground.
Thus we come to the 2015
Santa Fe, our test car this
week. This is the third generation, introduced as a 2013
model at the New York International Auto Show in the
summer of 2012. There are
two options to choose from:
the Sport, which accommodates five passengers and
can be purchased at the base or 2.0T version, and the Santa
Fe, which comes as a GLS or Limited and accommodates
seven passengers. The purchase price for the Santa Fe
ranges from $24,950 for the Sport to $34,250 for the Limited.
Handling of the Santa Fe is smooth, quiet and under con-
trol on most surfaces. The driving mode adjustments between
Normal, Comfort and Sport is a
detail that can be appreciated.
The only complaint I have in
driving is fuel efficiency, which is not high. In the model
we tested, the 2.0T Sport, mileage was 19 in the city and 27
on the highway in a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with
264 horsepower.
In the Santa Fe, we find an interior with above-average
materials and excellent finishes. The instrument
layout and design provide a good sense of spaciousness, and the dashboard presents a remarkable design concept. With comfortable seating
and excellent forward view (although somewhat
reduced on the sides), the cabin of the Santa Fe
is a nice place to stay. One detail that I like is the
ability to adjust the headrests horizontally. It is
something I don’t find often, and as the song by
Roberto Carlos goes, “Details as small as two /
are things too big to forget.”
In a report compiled annually by U.S. News
and World Report, the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe
finished second among a list of 11 midsize SUVs.
Certainly, with the level of finish,
safety records and benefits in this
car, I can’t help but agree with the
report.

El pequeño SUV o crossover sector es uno de los más
competitivos en el sector de la automoción. Es fácil
entender esta declaración si quiero mencionar tres nombres: Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4 y el Ford Escape. Para romper
a través de sus fuertes competidores, el coche se ha probado
esta semana ha tenido que “cruzar la selva con un cuchillo
en la boca”.
Hyundai ha hecho un trabajo excelente mantenimiento de
la competitividad de su crossover, el Santa Fe. Lleva el nombre
de la ciudad del mismo nombre en el estado de Nuevo México,
Santa Fe apareció en el mercado en 2000. No hay ningún otro
modelo ha hecho tanto por el éxito de la empresa coreana
como este. Desde el principio, fue bien aceptado, y Hyundai ha mejorado constantemente su producto, con su tierra.
Así llegamos al 2015 Santa Fe, nuestro coche de pruebas esta semana. Esta es la tercera generación, presentado
como una modelo 2013 en el New York International Auto
Show en el verano de 2012. Hay dos opciones para elegir:
el deporte, el cual tiene capacidad para cinco pasajeros
y puede ser adquirido en la base o versión 2.0T, y la de

el limitado. Manejo de la Santa Fe es suave, tranquilo y bajo

modo de conducción normal, Confort y Sport es un detalle que se puede apreciar. La única queja que tengo en la
conducción es eficiencia en el consumo de combustible,
que no es muy alto. En el modelo que hemos probado, el
2.0T Sport, el kilometraje es de 19 en la ciudad y 27 en la
autopista en el turbocompresor motor de 4 cilindros con
264 caballos de fuerza.
En la provincia de Santa Fe, encontramos un interior por encima de la media con materiales y acabados
excelentes. El diseño de los instrumentos y diseño proporcionan una buena sensación de espacio, y el panel de
mandos presenta un concepto de diseño notable. Con
una cómoda zona de estar y una excelente vista hacia
delante (aunque sea un poco menor a los lados), la cabina
del Santa Fe es un lugar agradable en el que alojarse.
Un detalle que me gusta es la capacidad de ajustar el
apoyacabezas en horizontal. Es algo que no se encuentra a menudo, y como la canción de Roberto Carlos, “Los

The New Man (El Hombre Nuevo) tells
the story of Stephanía, whose life began
as a boy named Roberto. At the tender age
of 12, Roberto fought for education and
social reforms in the Sandinista Revolution
in Nicaragua, and 30 years later Stephanía
strives to be accepted by society and her
long estranged family. About 15 minutes
into The New Man (El Hombre Nuevo),
Stephanía Mirza Curbelo is asked to talk
about the times that she feels discriminated
against. Stephanía shrinks, cracks a smile
and replies bluntly: “Ah, todo la vida [Well,
all my life].” Award-winning Uruguayan
filmmaker Aldo Garay has followed Stephania for more than 20 years. In this vibrant
and lyrical film, Garay introduces Stephania, wandering somewhat mysteriously

Su viaje no ha sido fácil. Él ha sido testigo de la violencia y
la crueldad, sino también una profunda compasión en el
mundo que él refleja a través de su escritura. El dice, “Yo

STUDY: UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANT YOUTH ON CONSTANT HIGH ALERT

SAN FRANCISCO – Fear followed Alberto Velazquez
every time he left the apartment he shared with his mother
and siblings in Pomona, California.
If he saw a cop walking on the sidewalk, he said, his first
instinct was to turn around and walk the other way.
“I was becoming irrational and paranoid,” said
Velazquez, who is now 24 and enjoying the security of being
a DACA (Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals) beneficiary. “I kept thinking if something goes wrong, the cops
would be at my door.”
Velazquez’s mental state
is typical of undocumented
immigrant youth, according
to a study released April 21 on
the mental health of undocumented and uninsured youth
called “Pol(ICE) in My Head,”
a project of UCLA’s Dream
Resou rce Cen ter (D RC) .
Researchers, many of them
undocumented youth themselves, interviewed 550 people
across California over a period of 10 weeks to find out how
much access to health care they had, especially to mental
health services.
“The mental health needs of undocumented [people]
are rarely addressed,” observed Josue Chavarin, a program
associate with The California Endowment, which funded
the research.
Research coordinator Alma Leyva of the DRC said that
the large number of immigrants deported since Obama
became president, combined with “excessive surveillance”
by law enforcement officials and barriers undocumented
youth face in areas such as health care, education and social
services, are factors contributing to the high level of stress
many of them experience.
“Fear of being deported prevents them from leaving
their homes,” Levya said at the April 21 webinar when the
findings were released. “They are self monitoring and on
high alert all the time.”

reason undocumented immigrants were reluctant to seek
health care is “because that
might require them to reveal
their undocumented status.”
For Asian and Pacific
Islander (API) immigrants,
being undocumented and
not being able to live up to
the “model minority” status
APIs largely enjoy push some
over the edge, according to
researcher Trina Lei Pasumbal, a member of the nonprofit
group ASPIRE (Asian Students Promoting Immigrant Rights
through Education). According to the American Psychological Association, using the year 2007 as a case study, suicide was the second leading cause of death for Asian-Americans aged 15 to 34.
The stigma of mental illness forces many to keep their
problems under wraps, Pasumbal lamented.
Even for those who want to seek help, language barri-
ers can stand in their way. This is especially true among
older immigrants, who are reluctant to ask for help from
health care providers simply because they have no vocabulary to describe how they feel. Pasumbal said there’s no
direct translation for the word “depression” in the Cambodian Khmer language. Instead, people may say something
like “the water in my heart has fallen.”
Researchers included participants in the DRC’s Circle
Project, a three-year-old support group where undocumented youth can meet to share their concerns and fears.
There are currently 30 youth who attend the biweekly meetings. Velazquez is one of them.
“It’s like group therapy,” he said.
While in high school, Velazquez said he got stressed
wondering if he would ever be able to go to college. Doing
part-time jobs that “paid me under the table,” and with
some help from his brother and mother, who manages an
apartment complex, he was able to put himself through Cal
Poly in Pomona, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He is now headed to Texas to work for Teach America.
“Going to [Circle Project] meetings has greatly relieved
my stress,” he said.
Recently, the Tri-City Wellness Center has begun providing basic mental health services to Circle Project members, Velazquez said.
But because mental health issues are so prevalent
among undocumented youth, he believes they should
have access to comprehensive health care.
“I think Lara’s bill would be a good solution,” said
Velazquez, referring to the legislation sponsored by Sen.
Ricardo Lara [D-Bell Gardens] called the Health for All
Act. The bill, which is currently making its way through
the state legislature, would provide access to health
care for all Californians, regardless of their immigration status.

madre y sus hermanos en Pomona, California.
Si veía un cop a pie sobre la acera, dijo, su primer instinto
fue a dar la vuelta y caminar en otra dirección. “YO era irracional y paranoico”, dijo Velázquez, quien es
actualmente de 24 y para disfrutar de la seguridad de ser
un ACAD (acción diferida de la Infancia llegadas) beneficiario. “Estuve pensando si algo va mal, la policía estaría
en mi puerta.”
Estado mental de Velázquez es el típico de los jóvenes
