On Wednesday September 29, the Office of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez held a “Small Business Development Expo” in conjunction with three Chambers of Commerce – the South Florida Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce (Luis De Rosa, President); the Hialeah Chamber of Commerce & Industries (Mandy Llanes, President) and the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (Lilliam Lopez, President). The event was a success – drawing near to 200 visitors and participants despite the tropical storm conditions. The Expo demonstrated the Mayor’s ongoing commitment to supporting our County’s Small Business Community. According to Suzanne Salichs (Project Administrator, Office of the Mayor) Mayor Alvarez organizes these events to assist in the growth of small businesses and job creation by bringing together leaders from the business, financial and government communities. Carlos Alvarez, Mayor, Miami-Dade County The Expo was opened by Luis De Rosa, who spoke briefly about how small businesses are the backbone of our economy and how expanding into new markets such as Puerto Rico offer new opportunities for growth. Suzanne Salichs welcomed all the participants and visitors to the Expo in the name of Mayor Alvarez, and spoke about his commitment to business. Mandy Llanes served as the MC of the event and described the services available through the Hialeah Chamber of Commerce. Lilliam Lopez spoke of the importance of Chambers developing partnerships to increase the benefits available to all their members. The presenters had table tops for display – with information and Armando “Mandy” Llanes, Chair, Hialeah Chamber of Commerce & Industries; Lilliam M. Among the information available was doing business with Miami-Dade County, obtaining Small Business Microloans, selecting banking services, and much more. During the luncheon, the following County Departments and private companies gave presentations on their products and services: Department of Procurement Management (Miriam Singer, Director); Department of Small Business Development (Sherri McGriff, Business Support Services Director); Office of Sustainability (Maribel Balbin, Sustainability Program Manager); Mercantile Commerce Bank (Luis Miguel, VP and Regional Sales / Service Manager); TD Bank (Manny Gonzalez, South Beach Manager); Neighbors and Neighbors Association ( representative of Leroy Jones, Executive Director); and Accion USA (Joan Milord, Program Manager). A Swearing In Ceremony was conducted by State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle at the Old San Juan Puerto Rican Cuisine Restaurant on Friday September 10th, at 12 o’clock noon. Also taking their Oaths of Office at that time were Manuel Del Valle (Treasurer), Henry Mojica Henry Mojica, Secretary; Hector River, Esq., Incoming Chair; Kathy Fernandez Rundle, State (Secretary), and Eduardo Godoy CPA (Board Attorney Miami-Dade; Manuel Del Valle, Treasurer & Eduardo Godoy, CPA Board Member Member and founding Treasurer of the Chamber). Victor T. Gutierrez Esq., Vice Chairman, was unable to attend the ceremony. The Chamber’s new Chairman, Hector R. Rivera Esq., has an impressive background in both the legal and community arenas. He currently works as a partner in the Miami office of the statewide law firm of Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer PA. He is a member of the Florida Bar, the Dade-County Bar, a founding Board Member and Past President of the Puerto Rican Bar Association of Florida, and a current member of Profesa. Mr. Rivera is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States, the US 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the District Court of the Southern District of Florida. He is a 1989 graduate of Temple University School of Law with honors. Born and raised in New York of Puerto Rican parents, Hector lives with his wife and children in Miami-Dade County. En Español Mesa de la Cámara de Puerto Rico Tomar Juramentos de Oficina La Cámara Puertorriqueña de Comercio del Sur de la Florida eligió en días pasados a su nueva Junta de Directores. La ceremonia de juramentación de los nuevos oficiales se efectuó en el conocido restaurant puertorriqueño The Old San Juan, en el 1200 SW 57th. Ave., de Miami, durante un simpático almuerzo. El juramento fue tomado por la Fiscal Estatal, Hon. Katherine Fernández Rundle, quién además se dirigió a los presents expresando los estrechos lazos de amistad que la unen con esta Cámara y con Puerto Rico. El nuevo presidente de la Junta de Directores es el prestigioso abogado Héctor Rivera, activo socio del bufete estatal Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A., en su oficina C h a m b er N ew s Page 4 de Miami. Rivera es miembro fundador y pasado presidente de la Puerto Rican Bar Association of Florida, además de pertenecer al Florida Bar y al Dade-County Bar. Reconocido por su activismo a favor de nuestra comunidad, también es un active miembro de PROFESA (Asociación de Puertorriqueños Profesionales del Sur de la Florida). Rivera está admitido a practicar en la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos, y en la Corte de Distrito del Southern District of Florida. Nació y se crió en New York, de padres puertorriqueños, está graduado con honores de la Temple University School of Law y actualmente reside con su esposa e hijos en el Condado Miami-Dade. En la ceremonia también juraron sus cargos, los señores Manuel del Valle, CPA, como Tesorero; Henry Mojica, ejecutivo de la Rafael Hernández Development Co., como Secretario; y Eduardo Godoy, CPA, (es el Tesorero fundador de la Cámara), como miembro de la Junta. El Lcdo. Victor T. Gutiérrez, Vicepresidente de la Junta, no pudo asistir a la ceremonia. Los nuevos directores de Tu Cámara expresaron su agradecimiento por sus respectivas selecciones y su mayor y continuado esfuerzo por el desarrollo de la organización y de nuestra comunidad.
