From Board President Orlando Ariza
The Board of Directors of Long Beach Latino Civic Association is pleased to
announce the appointment of Ms. Helen Dorado Alessi as the organization’s new
Executive Director. For over 25 years, Helen has dedicated her life’s work to social
justice concerns and their impact on communities of color, women and children,
through the corporate, philanthropic and nonprofit sectors.
As a leading professional in the philanthropic community, Helen is a Trustee of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation
and an active member of Hispanics in Philanthropy, from which she has been awarded and recognized. Helen’s passion
and expertise in childhood development, grant making and fighting for social reforms, has led to her roles as former
Senior Vice President of The Early Year’s Institute, Corporate Manager of Philanthropy for Toyota Motor North America, and was Vice President of the Edwin Gould Foundation.
Helen’s effort to engage and empower diverse members of the community, includes an open invitation for residents to
get involved in the environmental, cultural, civic, and economic development, of Long Beach. Long Beach Latino Civic
Association co-founder and Board President Orlando Ariza, exclaims: “As the previous Vice President of the LBLCA,
we have seen first hand, Helen’s determination to propel LBLCA into the bright future!”
Ms. Dorado Alessi stated that she is “honored to have been asked to lead Long Beach Latino Civic Association into the
next era. I am grateful for the assistance of our talented staff Ms. Nelly Romero, Program Director, and Joonmarie Roca
-Brush, Multimedia Director. Together with the Board of Directors, volunteers and High School and College interns, we
look forward to meeting the important vision for the Latino community in Long Beach. I am excited to build the capacity
of the organization, and in turn improve our members’ quality of life and leadership potential!”

TIPS AND RESOURCES FOR IMMIGRANTS
AWAITING STATUS ADJUSTMENT
LBLCA is receiving an influx of calls regarding President Obama's Immigration Accountability Executive
Action. Because immigration reforms can take several months to take effect, we advise immigrants to stay vigilant of immigration news, before taking drastic measures. Below are some pointers of what to do during this waiting period, as well as
available resources for free legal advisement:

Know Your Rights: Even if you're in the country illegally, you are still protected under the Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution. This means that if someone sues you, you have the right to receive
notice and to defend yourself. Law enforcement cannot seize and search your property without probable cause. Illegal immigrants, also have the right to file lawsuits, such as discrimination suits in federal court (State law varies).

Beware of immigration scams and opportunists: If you need help filing an application or petition with USCIS,
be sure to seek assistance from the right place, and from people that are authorized to help.
Going to the wrong place can delay your application, cost you unnecessary fees, or lead to deportation.

Keep your files organized and hidden in a safe place: When it comes to USCIS, documentation is everything!
Keep records and copies of your household income, expenses, bank statements and official letters (such as affidavits)
secure from prying eyes. USCIS applications contain private information that can be detrimental to you, if lost or
stolen.

Do not sign blank forms/Read before you sign: Do not sign USCIS application(s) UNTIL it is completed and
ready to be mailed with supporting documents.

Watch and read about the latest immigration news: laws and policies may change at any time; keep track of
the latest articles and news programs regarding immigration.

Seek FREE legal advisement, before hiring a lawyer: nonprofit organizations such as NYLAG and CARECEN
provide free legal advisement and services in immigration and human rights. Make an appointment and find out the

FREE CITIZENSHIP APPLICATION ASSISTANCE
WITH CARECEN NY
On Saturday November 8, 2014, Long Beach Latino Civic Association welcomed the Central American Refugee Center
(CARECEN) and Citibank volunteers, who assisted legal U.S. Residents living in Long Beach with their citizenship applications.
CARECEN NY is a non-profit organization that has provided immigration legal services and advocacy for immigrants on Long
Island since 1983. Although their New York offices are located in Hempstead and Brentwood, citizenship drives are being
hosted in villages throughout Long Island--recently in Westbury this July and at LBLCA this November.
Among the eleven participants assisted by CARECEN in Long Beach, LBLCA Program Director, Nelly A. Romero lead by
example and applied for citizenship, side by side with some of the clients she has helped with Case Management. "Part of our
Mission at LBLCA is to inform the community of their rights and to provide them with free resources that improve quality of
life and economic growth. As Program Director (and legal US resident), I wanted to be involved in this project to have firsthand experience of what my clients will go through during the application process. I am happy to report that Elise Damas,
Esq and the other lawyers from CARECEN guided us throughout the whole application process with patience, discretion and
respect. It was a pleasure to have CARECEN in our office, and we welcome future citizenship drives whenever possible!"

El Sábado 8 de Noviembre de 2014, La Asociacíon Civica de Latinos en Long Beach dio la bienvenida al Centro de Refugio Centroamericano (CARECEN) y voluntarios de Citibank, que ayudaron a los residentes legales de los Estados Unidos que viven en
Long Beach con sus solicitudes de ciudadanía.
CARECEN, NY es una organización sin fines de lucro que ha prestado servicios legales de inmigración y la defensa de los inmigrantes en Long Island desde 1983. Tienen oficinas en Nueva York, tambien en Hempstead y Brentwood, unidades de ciudadanía están siendo alojadas en los pueblos a lo largo de Long Island - recientemente en Westbury en el mes de Julio y en

SALVATION ARMY MOBILE FOOD TRUCK
AND CHRISTMAS ASSISTANCE
In September 2014, Major José Guzmán from The Salvation Army Freeport Citadel Corps and Senior Center, was in
search of a trusted organization to help arrange a food distribution event in Long Beach. After the Long Beach Latino
Civic Association met with the Major, LBLCA called local churches in Long Beach that have hosted food drives in the
past, in hopes of securing a time and place for the event. After much deliberation, LBLCA was able to connect the Major
to Pastor Raul Colon from La Cruzada Evangelica Missionary Church, and a Mobile Food Pantry was scheduled for Tuesday October 28, 2014 from 12-2pm.
The event was such a success that they distribute the boxes of food within the first hour! Salvation Army and church
volunteers worked tirelessly to disperse boxes of food to families waiting in line. The thankful Major later exclaimed: "I
wanted to take some time to say THANK YOU [LBLCA] VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP arranging for the Mobile Food
Pantry distribution on October 28 at La Cruzada. The event was a success as we distributed about 220 boxes of food to
about 200 families."
Aside from food distribution, Major José and Ana Guzmán extended The Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Wishlist
to LBLCA, and was able to accept applications for 13 families, in need of support for the holidays!
We hope to continue our partnership with The Salvation Army, and other organizations who have helped LBLCA and
the community of Long Beach. The Salvation Army is always looking for volunteers and seasonal employees;

EJÉRCITO DE SALVACIÓN CON UN CAMION MÓVIL LLENO
ALIMENTOS Y ASISTENCIA PARA LA NAVIDAD
En Septiembre de 2014, Mayor José Guzmán de la ciudadela Freeport Cuerpo y Centro de Ancianos del Ejército de
Salvación, fue en busca de una organización de confianza para ayudar a organizar un evento de distribución de alimentos en
Long Beach. Después de que la Asociación Cívica de Latinos en Long Beach se reunió con el comandante, LBLCA llamo a
Iglesias locales en Long Beach que han sido sede de colectas de alimentos en el pasado, y con la esperanza de asegurar un

NEW JOB TRAINING PROGRAM
WITH SUSTAINABLE LONG ISLAND
LBLCA would like to invite you to participate in our Long Beach Career Connections: Job Training Program in Long Beach,
NY. In partnership with Sustainable Long Island, the free job training and referral program began with the intention to increase employment in Long Beach, following Hurricane Sandy.
Residents, 16 years or older legally available to work in the US, unemployed or employed, will learn, practice and perfect
hands-on techniques from a restaurant professional with more than 25 years of experience in the Hospitality and Customer
Service industry. Participants will follow a curriculum designed to build their credentials, while learning proper work etiquette and improving interpersonal communications and presentation skills. With role-rehearsals, visual aids, résumé construction, and individual evaluations (to name a few), we hope to guide the participants into becoming indispensable employees with potential for economic security!
Restaurant managers looking for reliable staff, employed individuals in need of a refresher course, and unemployed individuals

Long Beach, Nueva York,. En asociación con Long Island Sostenible, el programa de capacitación para el trabajo y la remisión
libre comenzó con la iniciativa de aumentar el empleo en Long Beach, despues y tras el huracán Sandy.
Para los residentes mayors de 16 años y legales para trabajar en los EE.UU., desempleados o empleados, aprenderán, practicar y perfeccionar técnicas prácticas de un profesional con más de 25 años de experiencia en la industria de la hospitalidad y
servicio al cliente de restaurante. Los participantes seguirán un plan de estudio diseñado para construir sus credenciales,
mientras que el aprendizaje de la etiqueta de trabajo adecuado mejora las comunicaciones interpersonales y habilidades de
