For the new fiscal year which began July 1, an annual budget was adopted based on anticipated income of $1,047,200 from these two sources. This number reflects 95% of actual income for the fiscal year just ended. The parish is now publishing a monthly report comparing our actual income to budget including a year to date comparison. As you will see from the accompanying charts, we experienced a shortfall of $9,851 compared to budget in the month of July. In one cartoon four men were pictured sitting around a table in a church board meeting. In the picture, the man at the head said, “It looks like we’re going to have to recall our last 25 converts – there seems to be a defect in their giving.” A 2007 Barna Research Online study on charitable giving or tithing (giving 10 percent of one’s income to charity) showed that the proportion of household giving has decreased since the year 2000. Giving patterns show that fewer than 5 percent of adults tithe. Among various Christian groups, 24 percent of evangelical tithe, conservatives 12 percent tithe, regular church goers who pray and read the bible 12 percent tithe, charismatics and Pentecostal Christians 11 percent tithe and registered Republicans 10 percent tithe. Those identified as “born again Christians,” nine percent donated more than 10 percent of their income to their church or charity. The study indicated that Protestants were four times more likely to tithe than Catholics (8% versus 2%, respectively). A similar article stated that many Christians don’t give because their pastors have failed to teach them the biblical principles of stewardship. The Scriptures reveal that one of the key responsibilities of spiritual leaders is to challenge parishioners to give. Many studies indicate that when pastors do so God’s people respond generously and obediently.
