The Sunday offertory basket together with the monthly Maintenance collection
is the parish’s primary source of income to fund ministries and programs. For the
new fiscal year which began July 1, an annual budget was adopted based on anticipated
income of $1,047,200 from these two sources. This number reflects 95% of actual
income for the fiscal year just ended. The parish is now publishing a monthly
report comparing our actual income to budget including a year to date comparison.
As you will see from the accompanying charts, we experienced a shortfall of
$9,851 compared to budget in the month of July.

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima,/Queridos parroquianos y amigos de Nuestra Señora de Fátima,
Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our
Lady of Fatima,/Queridos parroquianos y
amigos de Nuestra Señora de Fátima,
In her book, “Church is Stranger than
Fiction,” Mary Chambers' cartoons offer
a humorous perspective on pastors, pews,
and other peculiarities of church life. In
one cartoon four men were pictured sitting
around a table in a church board meeting.
In the picture, the man at the head said,
“It looks like we’re going to have to recall our last 25 converts – there
seems to be a defect in their giving.”
A 2007 Barna Research Online study on charitable giving or tithing
(giving 10 percent of one’s income to charity) showed that the proportion of household giving has decreased since the year 2000. Giving
patterns show that fewer than 5 percent of adults tithe. Among various Christian groups, 24 percent of evangelical tithe, conservatives
12 percent tithe, regular church goers who pray and read the bible 12
percent tithe, charismatics and Pentecostal Christians 11 percent tithe
and registered Republicans 10 percent tithe.
Those identified as “born again Christians,” nine percent donated
more than 10 percent of their income to their church or charity. The
study indicated that Protestants were four times more likely to tithe
than Catholics (8% versus 2%, respectively). A similar article stated
that many Christians don’t give because their pastors have failed to
teach them the biblical principles of stewardship. The Scriptures
reveal that one of the key responsibilities of spiritual leaders is to challenge parishioners to give. Many studies indicate that when pastors
do so God’s people respond generously and obediently.

2013-2014 Breaking Bread with Friends
will be forming soon!
Breaking Bread (formerly known as Dinner Circles) is a small group
of adult parishioners who gather every 4-6 weeks to enjoy a meal
together. When we receive your registration, you will be placed in a
compatible group, and one of the committee members will contact
you. Each group meets around every 4 to 6 weeks for 6 to 8 months,
with each participant hosting one meal. It is all about fun and getting
to know new people in our parish.
Our kickoff event is on Sunday, October 20, at 6:30pm in McGowan
Hall. Detailed information can be found at www.OLFchurch.net/parish_life.html or sign up after all Masses on the weekends of 9/22 and
9/29. Registration must be received in the parish office by September
30. Contact Carol Batezel ([email protected] / 949-366-6418),
Carolyn Cunningham, ([email protected] / 949-366-5476) or
Barbara Runolfson ([email protected] / 949-361-8743) if you
have any questions.
Stocking the pantry
Our parish’s monthly food collection is a vital and consistent source
of food for the local pantry operated by our ministry partner Family
Assistance Ministries (FAM.) The food collection takes place on the
4th Sunday of each month and is delivered to FAM’s pantry by parish
volunteers. Empty grocery bags are available this weekend with a list
of needed items. Pick one up and return it next week. All are invited
to assist with the food collection, including families and teens. For
more information, contact Dixie Gillivan at 361-0792.
Work of Our Hands Ministry
Our parish prayer shawl ministry, Work of Our Hands, will meet on
Thursday, September 19 in McGowan Hall - Room E. Work of our

need of God’s comfort and solace. Although the ministry gathers
every third Thursday for fellowship, attendance is not required to be
a part of this work. Prayer shawls can be created anywhere. If you
love to knit or crochet perhaps this is the right time to check out this
special form of outreach. For more information, please contact
Annice Douglas at [email protected].
