HOOP GLIDERS
HOOP GLIDERS Make an object that glides. What you do 1. Cut out two strips of paper, 1” wide, along the long side of a sheet of paper. 2. Cut one of those strips in 1/2 so that you have a long strip of paper and a short one. 3. Make a hoop out of the paper strip by placing the ends of the strip together. Tape the ends together. 4. Repeat with the other paper strip to make another hoop. 5. Tape the small hoop to one end of the straw. 6. Tape the big hoop to the opposite end of the straw but in line with the small hoop. 7. To use, hold the hoop glider in the middle of the straw with the small hoop in front. Throw it gently like a dart. For Parents The paper hoops on the Hoop Glider act like wings. The shape of the hoops allows the air flowing around them to create lift, a force that pushes the glider up. The force you give by throwing it, called thrust, allows the air to flow around the hoops, creating the lift and allowing the glider to soar. For a plane to fly, the lift must be stronger than the weight.
