CONTENTS
We are now heading towards the last few weeks of this academic year and still have a DofE Trip
number of exciting events to come. The majority of our trips take place during the Memorised Poems
month of June, including the residential visits for the children in Years 4, 5 and 6 to Trip to Morocco
Entrerrios, Tarifa and El Chorro respectively. Miss Janice and her choir will be inviting Poetry Winners
parents to an evening performance on June 12th to showcase their singing talents. Also, Athletics
as has become tradition at Swans Primary, we will be holding our eagerly awaited
Swans Talent Show during the last week of term. Lastly, we will be finishing the year with our very
enjoyable Key Stage 2 International Day, when all of our children get to celebrate their national heritage.

It is fantastic to read, every month in the newsletter, what a credit the students are to you as parents and
us as a school. This forum provides an excellent opportunity to recognise the student’s hard work and
celebrate their achievements, whilst keeping you updated on school life.
Recently, the students have participated in numerous sporting activities and matches, with particularly
successful results in athletics, golf and football. We were also very proud to have won several of the main
prizes at the City of Malaga Poetry Competition, for the second year running.
Our congratulations to the IB students who have now completed their exams and look forward to their
graduation ceremony. I hope that they, and their families, are able to take time to reflect on their last two
years of study and the vast amount of effort and perseverance they have displayed. We eagerly await their
results in July and wish them all the very best.

Excursion to Baelo Claudia Archaeological Site.
On April 29, Year 8 students and their teachers visited the
archaeological site of Baelo Claudia, located close to Bolonia beach
(Cádiz). The tour was organized jointly by the Departments of
Humanities and Spanish as part of the 2013-14 academic curriculum.
Our students had the opportunity to see, in situ, the ruins of this
ancient Roman city and its thermal baths, basilica, temples, forums,
and aqueducts. Afterwards, we all went to Bolonia beach and enjoyed
a fantastic and memorable day.

Duke of Edinburgh International Award: Adventurous Journey to Sierra de
Grazalema
Ten students from Years 9 and 10 recently spent a weekend near Ronda, to
complete the Adventurous Journey part of the Duke of Edinburgh
International Award. The route set off from Montejaque and went through
the beautiful Valley de Libar before a challenging cross country section saw
them arrive, that evening, in Cortés de la Frontera. The students were
responsible for navigation (with mixed
success!) and had to organise their food and
camping equipment for the first night. The
second day, the students walked from Cortés de la Frontera to El Colmenar
via the spectacular Garganta de la Buitreras. In total the students covered
over 40km in two days. Although there were plenty of sore feet and aching
legs, the students remained cheerful and positive throughout. They
displayed great character and teamwork to complete the adventurous
phase of their International Award.
Miniature Gardens
Year 2 children have been designing and making miniature gardens this month
as part of our IPC topic, ‘Our World’. Different things were collected,
constructed or foraged at home and brought into school to make some
interesting creations!
Year 7 Science trip
We left school just after 9am, and spent the rest of the day at the beach in Calahonda. On arriving, the
tide was out, however, all the rock-pools were damp – and ready for exploring! We performed various
experiments, for instance, discovering and analysing different types of invertebrate sealife. One of the
most common animals that we found was the sea cucumber; and Mr Cawson found an octopus! Not
only did we do experiments, towards the end we also had some free time to swim in the sea. It was the
perfect ending to the perfect day!

Via Verde de la Sierra
On Saturday May 10th, a group of intrepid Swans students and teachers once again cycled the Via Verde
de la Sierra route, which connects the villages of Puerto Serrano and
Olvera in the Ronda region. The total distance traveled was 76km.
The route includes several bridges and a total of 60 tunnels, and
passes through the territory of one of the largest Spanish vultures as
well as landscapes of extraordinary beauty.
Congratulations to the participants: Esteban Halmi (Y8), Jesus
Sobredo and Nicholas Forteza (Y10) and Arseniy Kobylyanskiy
(Y11); and teachers D. Tomás Prieto, D. Christian Brotons, D. Daniel
Díez and D. Miguel.
Memorised Poems
This month, we had the much anticipated Memorised Poems
week, an annual highlight of the Swans School calendar. This
year was, again, a literary feast of great poems, recited by
fantastic performers.
The week began with Years 3 and 4 covering a range of poets
from Kenn Nesbitt, Dr Suess and Marriott Edgar. Year 4 even
performed an acrostic that they had written themselves!
Next up, were Years 1 and 2. Again, Kenn Nesbitt was a
favourite with two of his poems being recited. Claire
Freedman’s
‘Top
Secret’ was performed, as well as a retelling of the story of
‘Noah’s Ark’. Year 1 also performed ‘Busy Creatures’, which was
adapted for them by Miss Jane!
Finally, it was the turn of Foundation Stage and Year 6. Our
youngest children wowed the audience with thematic poems
covering topics such as friendship and opposites. Our eldest
children plumped for classics from Alfred Noyes, T.S Eliot and
Mary Howitt.
The children all worked very hard in their quest to bring their
poems to life. Well done to all involved!
PAD Animal Shelter Visit
The annual visit to the PAD animal shelter took place on Thursday 22nd of
May. The children who raised the most money in the previous year’s
sponsored spell were invited to visit. They spent a couple of hours meeting
the cats and dogs who have benefitted from Swans’ amazing generosity.
Next week is this year’s sponsored spell, we thank you in advance for your
continuing support.

Swans at the Royal British Legion
Last week, Swans Primary School’s Head Girl and Boy, Emilia and
Nabil (Year 5) received an award, on behalf of the school, from the
Royal British Legion, Marbella. Both Primary and Secondary
schools were rewarded for their fund raising efforts and the
children were described as "super ambassadors for the school" by
the regional director of the RBL London branch, after they had
given their speech of thanks. Well done to everybody involved.
New Curriculum for Foundation Stage
Our Foundation Stage Department fully introduced the new British curriculum in September. We are
coming to the end of our first complete year and it has been a very interesting process. The curriculum
covers seven areas of learning: The Prime Areas are Physical Development, Communication and
Language and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. The Specific Areas are Mathematics,
Literacy, Understanding the World and Expressive Art and Design. There have been some changes to
our topics and our timetables but we have all still managed to achieve our objectives through interesting,
exciting and fun activities. We have managed to develop our outdoor play areas and we spend more
time outside now – we even have maths and literacy lessons outside too! The children are now having
their very simple assessments before they move up to the next year group. In our final month we will be
finishing off our topics and spending more time outside. We are hoping to have our traditional ‘Water
Days’ and spend more time in the sandpit. Keep your fingers crossed for continued beautiful weather.
Treasure
In Year 3, we enjoyed an exciting Entry Point to our new IPC topic this
month. We followed mysterious clues all around the school, until we found a
curious chest, which contained the key to this new topic… TREASURE! We
are now learning about the important work of archeologists and many other
historical and scientific facts, including how the magnificent tomb of
Tutankhamen was discovered! We can’t wait to find out more…
The Great Swans Novel
Back in Book Week, the library posed a question... what would happen if
we, as a student body, tried to write a novel, with no plan, on the hoof, in
just 5 days? The answer hits our shelves this week in the form of our first
self-published extended piece of fiction “The Surreal Adventures of
Casper, Peppa, Batman, Leonardo Di Caprio and Barack Obama”. It
won´t be winning the Booker Prize, but it´s actually a pretty good read!
Students can call into the library to read it and all contributors are entitled
to a copy.

Swans International School Sweeps the Board in the XVIII Poetry
Contest for Kids “Poets Of The 27”
This year, the City of Malaga’s "Municipal Development Reading
Plan" held the XVIII Poetry Contest for Kids "Poets of the 27”. This
contest has been held annually for the past eighteen years and is
open to all children in the province. For the third year in a row,
Swans was privileged to have winners and finalists in this
prestigious contest. This year was a particularly big success: five of
the sixteen poems selected from the whole of Málaga province came
from Swans’ students. Andrea Henderson de la Fuente, in Year 9, took first prize in her category,
and Teresa Urbano Tortosa in Year 6 won third prize. We had three finalists too: Alejandra CortésFunes (Year 8), Lucía Gómez Osuna (Year 10) and Amaya Crichton-Smith (Year 9). Most of these
students are not Spanish, making the achievement even more notable, and demonstrating the high
quality of Spanish teaching in the school.
Their poems have been published in a book which has been distributed to all the schools and
libraries of the province.
Volcanoes
Year 1 Park Trip The children in Year 4
have been learning all
about Volcanoes. As part
of the Design and
Technology aspect of their
studies, they constructed
their
own
model
volcanoes. For the Exit
Point of the topic, both
classes went to the park to
‘erupt’ them! The children had great fun and it
was lovely to hear the collective ‘Wow!’ as the
‘lava’ spilled out!
On Tuesday 6th May, the Year 1 classes went to
the park at Nagueles as an introduction to our
final IPC topic of the year, “Flowers and Insects”.
We hunted for mini-beasts, looked at the variety
of plants and trees and had a nature treasure hunt.
We also had a picnic snack in the park and
finished off with fun on the climbing frame and
slides.
We all had a very enjoyable morning exploring the
park. 5
Spanish Gymkhana
On May 2nd, Year 10 participated in the Spanish Gymkhana.
This consisted of spending the day in Marbella, answering
questions and talking to people in order to improve language
skills. The students toured the centre of Marbella in pairs,
taking in the Central Market, the Paseo, the Alameda Park
and more. Various types of questions were asked, requiring
students to take pictures, research historical facts and find
out prices. This continued throughout the morning, until half
past two when we went to eat at a restaurant called EBE.
There were tapas, sandwiches, chips and mixed salads which
were both very tasty and cheap. Then we went to the Paseo
to try to finish the questions, but we ran out of time. The day
ended with smiles and memories. The trip was a great success, helping many people to improve their
Spanish and find out a little more about our city, because, although very small, it is full of things to see
and do.

A Thousand Miles and a Million Words
In Book Week, students from secondary were challenged to read a
million words as a form group or as an individual. Both prizes
have now been claimed (by 8TJ and Jasmijn De Grebber) who win a
Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and 50 euros respectively (all students who
subsequently reach a million will be rewarded too). Very well done
to them all on this remarkable achievement. Many were daunted
by the challenge initially but it just goes to show that a journey of a
thousand miles begins with a single step.
Year 4, Crocodile Park and Beach Sculptures
On Tuesday 20th May the children in Year Four went on a trip to the
Crocodile Park in Torremolinos. This was the Entry Point activity for
their new topic, ‘Dinosaurs’. The children enjoyed a guided tour of the
Park, which included the opportunity to hold a baby crocodile. The children learnt a lot about these intriguing creatures, including the fact that
their ancestors can be traced back to the
Mesozoic Era!
Following an informative morning at
the Crocodile Park, the children then went to the beach in Marbella
where they met up with some of their parents. The afternoon was
spent making sand sculptures of dinosaurs. The standard was very
high, so the children were then rewarded with an ice cream!
All in all, it was a lovely day for Year Four and their teachers!

Trip to Morocco
From 1st to the 4th May, IB students took part in the first Morocco trip organized by
the school. It was designed to be for all Year 12 IB students, not only to have an
amusing time, but also in order to complete many CAS hours; however only 6 of us
finally went. We left at 11am in the morning from the bus station, in order to arrive to
Morocco at approximately half past 4.
On Thursday, once we arrived at our destination (Chefchaouen), we unpacked our
baggage and went for a walk round the village. We were all amazed by the beauty of
the city, with all streets painted in different shades of blue, many small shops all
around, and people staring at you with intrigue and amusement. We went for dinner
at a small, peculiar restaurant in “La Medina” (the centre of the city), where there
was no menu, and we had to eat what the man of the house cooked that day. The
food was different from what we normally eat here, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
The following day, we had a wonderful breakfast at Dom’s house, more than enough to prepare us for the
intense mountain climbing we were going to undertake. Therefore, after breakfast, the students were in
charge to prepare the picnic, so we went to the village to buy the food. We were surprised by the fact that
everything cost less than 10 Euros altogether, showing how cheap things are in Morocco.
We arrived at Benizayed at 1:30pm, and it was extremely hot. This village was much poorer, made obvious
by the clothing of the children, and in the conditions of the houses and the school. The school consisted of
three classrooms, but only one was usable, as the ceiling had fallen in in two of them due to the rain.
Furthermore, the bathrooms (which were a hole in the ground with a bucket of water) were out of order, as
the authorities from the village had redirected the water from the school to the marihuana fields. Our faces
completely changed when we saw the state of that, which instantaneously made our helping spirit rise. We
went round the village and gave out several donations to some families we passed by: T-shirts, jumpers,
shoes, pens etc, always being careful, as all the children went towards you to grab something else, excited
by the unexpected surprise.
We began our climb at 2.40pm, guided by three children from the village (with whom we couldn’t
communicate by speaking). The ascent was quite difficult, as the boys
walked fairly quickly, and they took us through parts where there were
no paths. It was surprising how the boys walked up the mountain with
a pair of flip-flops each and with no water or food. We offered them
water numerous times but they always rejected it.
Once we arrived to the top, we ate our picnic, and after recovering from
the climb, we carried on to descend the mountain. The views were
amazing, and the descent was much easier than the climb. On our way
back, we crossed some even poorer villages, to which we handed out
some other donations. In our arrival to Benizayed, some children from
the school were still there waiting for us, and the three boys who accompanied us seemed very proud to
have taken us on the climb, so we paid our three guides and returned to Chefchaouen by car, exhausted by
the arduous climb. We walked for approximately 3 and a half hours, an intense activity.
Our plan for the afternoon was to visit the “Hammam”, the communal bath for the local people, which was
going to be relaxing, and ended up being quite amusing. The woman who attended us was the opposite of
gentle, brusquely pouring water all over us using buckets of water, and cleaning us with natural soap. The
exfoliating was also quite abrupt, however the massage was quite relaxing. This has been one of the most
amusing experiences of trip, and one that I am sure we will never forget.

Trip to Morocco (continued)
On Saturday, it was the boys’ turn to visit the Hammam (as women and men have
to go separately) so in the mean time, the girls went for another touristic walk
around the village. Once we were all ready to go, we headed towards our next
destination: Bezcayama (where the football game was going to take place),
together with some other Rifcom people who were also going to help at the event.
This village was equally as poor as Benizayed, but we all arrived with a good
spirit to help as much as we could. Before we started to organise everything, we went to see the football
pitch. We were all completely shocked by its state. It only consisted of rocks and dust, so we prayed that it
would be improved for the next day’s event. As soon as we came back, we began with the preparations for
the next day. We spent the entire afternoon placing the football shoes in order of size, folding up the
certificates, folding up the socks, arranging the goodie bags for the children and the donations for each
village, and counting up the medals, which was quite exhausting. Therefore, after having a nice meal, we
went to sleep in order to get a good rest for the competition.
We woke up at 7:30am, ate our breakfast, and were ready to leave at 9.30 to the football pitch. Luckily, our
prayers had been heard, and the football pitch looked far better, with white lines painted on the sides and
proper goals. We set everything up before the children arrived, and progressively, all of the eight villages
arrived. All of the Rifcom helpers were wearing the same Rifcom T-shirt, so that the children could identify
us. Everything was chaotic, as we expected, as the children were all excited about the event. However, we
managed to start the tournament fairly well, with each person assigned a specific job (refereeing, scoring,
managing the groups, getting the balls…)
Beabel and I were in charge of the educational part of the event, where we had
to inform the children about dental hygiene. As we couldn’t communicate
with them verbally, we decided on doing a play, where I was eating healthy
food (apples and cucumbers) and she was eating sugar and biscuits, and I
showed her how, after having any meal, she should clean her teeth.
Fortunately, there was a man who translated our show to the children, which
was of great help. At first, I didn’t think that the children would pay much
attention to us, as they would all be interested in the matches taking place. However, as the day progressed,
the groups were showing more interest, and they understood the main ideas of our show, which was great
news!
When the competition concluded, the winning team was awarded the trophy, and every child who
participated was given a goodie bag, a medal and a certificate (there were more children than expected, so
some of them left with no goodie bag, but we tried to make sure they were at least given a small present).
Then the children ate their picnics (which the Rifcom team also provided), and the rest of us went to take
lunch at a rural house in the village (the food, I must say, tasted like heaven).
Unfortunately, it was time to say goodbye to Morocco, so we packed up our things from the motel and we
left to the port, where the ferry was waiting for us to head back to Spain.
I’ve had a wonderful time on this trip, and I hope to repeat it soon, as, apart
from undertaking a complete new challenge, you get to have an amazing
time, covering all aspects of the CAS program. I deeply recommend all
future IB students to take part in this adventure, as you not only get to see
new parts of the world that you have never encountered, but you also get a
life experience that you will never forget, and an immense personal
satisfaction of helping someone in need.

Under 15 Boys’ Football
This was a very strong performance from our Under 15s in
their first outing at 11-a-side. A first half goal from Manuel and
a second half brace from Fran had the game sewn up, but Rota,
who were the dominant team overall, fully deserved their
consolation goal and put us under a lot of pressure in the latter
stages of the game. An experience to be repeated for sure!
Students who represented the school were; Alex Tawil, Tomas
Williams, Jesper De Jonge, Jin-Yi Lui (Captain), James Howard,
Dylan Ramirez, Eugeny Popov, Manuel Anguita, Miguel
Bacharov, Fran Moreno, Alexander Sovdagorov, Paulo
Valdivieso, Aidan Warriner, Abdullaziz Al-Dugheithir and
Juan Milagro.

Key Stage 2 Sports Day
Years 3, 4 and 5 took part in a variety of races during their sports
day, including a running, relay
and obstacle race. Well done to
the Doves who achieved the
most points and won the
trophy. The points from Key
Stage 1´s potted sports day were
added to the totals for each
house, making the overall
winners the Doves!
Golf Champion
Felipe Barrena Rodriguez was the star of the Andalucía Under 16 Pitch & Putt Championship 2014,
which was held at the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina, near
San Pedro de Alcantara, Marbella.
The tournament will be remembered for a fine exhibition
of golf from Felipe, who won the title with a superb score
of 99 shots, which is nine below par.
The Malaga player was in the lead at the end of the first
day thanks to an excellent round of 51, three under par.
However, the best was yet to come and on the second and
final day, Felipe proved himself with an amazing round of
48 - six under par; including an eagle (hole in one), five
birdies and only one bogey throughout the 18 holes.

Inter-School Athletics
On Thursday 8th May, our Year 7-10 Athletics team travelled to
Cartama stadium, Malaga to take part in the Inter-school athletics
events. Overall, we finished in an impressive 4th place. Students took
part in a variety of events; 100m, 4x100m relay, 400m, 800m, shot,
javelin, high jump and long jump. A special
mention goes to the following students who were
placed in their events:

jump, Marta Rodríguez (2nd) 800m, Begoña Traveso
(2nd) 100m, Camilla Frismodt (2nd) high jump,
Marina Garcia Hunter (2nd) high jump, Jessica Newton (2nd) javelin, Year 7 Boys relay
team (3rd), Malen Perurena (3rd) 800m, Patricia Barra Martin (3rd) 400m, Rebecca
Polvani (3rd) 400m, Year 7 Girls relay team (3rd), Year 8 Girls relay team (3rd),
Year 10 Girls relay team (3rd), Alejandra Cortes-Funes (3rd) long jump, Mar Gonzalez
(2nd) shot, Salma Perez (3rd) javelin. Well done to all of the competitors. Volleyball Laude
On Wednesday 21st May the U13 and U15 Volleyball
teams travelled to Laude to play in the Inter-school
volleyball tournament. Swans took 8 teams who all
participated well. They have been training for this
event and prior to the tournament we had 70 students
out in a training session! 53 students took part on the
day. Results are as follows:

Estimados Padres,
Ya nos acercamos a las últimas semanas de este año académico y todavía hay varios CONTENIDOS
eventos por venir. La mayoría de nuestras excursiones tendrán lugar durante el mes

de junio, incluyendo visitas residenciales para los alumnos de Year 4, 5 y 6 a
Poemas Memorizadas
Entrerrios, Tarifa y El Chorro respectivamente. Miss Janice y su coro invitarán a los Marruecos
padres a un concierto el 12 de junio para mostrarles su talento musical. También, Poetas Ganadores
como viene siendo tradición en Swans Primaria, tendremos nuestro deseado Atletismo
Concurso de Talentos durante la última semana del trimestre. Por último,
terminaremos el curso con nuestro emocionante Día Internacional de KS2, donde todos los alumnos y
alumnas tienen la ocasión de celebrar la tradición de su país.

Es fantástico leer todos los meses en el boletín de noticias, el orgullo que representan los estudiantes para
sus padres y para todos nosotros. Es una excelente oportunidad para reconocer el trabajo duro de los
estudiantes y celebrar sus logros, a la vez que manteneos informados de la vida escolar.
Recientemente, los alumnos han participado en numerosos acontecimientos deportivos y partidos, con
excelentes resultados en atletismo, golf y fútbol. También estamos muy orgullosos de haber ganado por
tercer año consecutivo, muchos de los principales premios que se conceden en el Certamen de Poesía
organizado por el Área de cultura de Málaga.
Nuestra enhorabuena a los estudiantes de IB que han terminado sus exámenes y están deseando celebrar
su graduación. Espero que ellos y su familia dediquen un momento para reflexionar sobre los dos últimos
años de estudio, y el esfuerzo y la perseverancia que han mostrado. Esperamos con impaciencia sus
resultados en julio y les deseamos todo lo mejor.

Excursión al conjunto arqueológico de Baelo Claudia.
El pasado 29 de abril los alumnos de Year 8 acompañados de sus
profesores visitaron el conjunto arqueológico de Baelo Claudia,
localizado en las inmediaciones de la playa de Bolonia (Cádiz). La
excursión fue organizada conjuntamente por los Departamentos de
Humanidades y Español como parte del currículo académico del curso
2013-14. Nuestros estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de ver in situ las
ruinas de esta antigua ciudad romana. Pudieron contemplar los restos
de construcciones romanas: termas, basílica, templos, foro, acueductos,
etc. Posteriormente todos fuimos a la playa de Bolonia y disfrutamos de
un fantástico e inolvidable día.
Visita a Sierra Blanca
Queremos invitar a los padres de Primaria a que visiten Swans Sierra Blanca y puedan ver nuestras
instalaciones y almorzar con nosotros en el comedor. Si desean venir, por favor, pasen por la oficina para
concertar una cita con Miss Susanne o Miss Cris.

Premio Internacional Duque de Edimburgo
Viaje de Aventura a la Sierra de Grazalema
Diez estudiantes de Year 9 y Year 10 pasaron un fin de semana cerca de
Ronda para realizar una excursión como parte del Premio Internacional
Duque de Edimburgo.
Salimos de Montejaque y nos dirigimos campo a través al Valle de Líbar
para desembocar en Cortes de la Frontera. Los alumnos fueron los
responsables de la ruta (con éxito) y tuvieron
que organizarse la comida y el equipo de
acampada para la primera noche.
El segundo día, caminaron desde Cortes de la Frontera a El Colmenar,
pasando por la espectacular Garganta de las Buitreras. En total, hicieron 40
kilómetros en dos días. Durante todo el trayecto se mostraron muy
animados y alegres, aunque algunos sufrieron dolor de pies y de piernas.
Su actitud y trabajo en equipo fueron fantásticos para completar la fase de
aventura de su Premio Internacional.
Jardines Miniaturas
Este mes los niños de Year 2 diseñaron e hicieron jardines miniaturas como
parte de su tema IPC, 'Nuestro mundo'. ¡Se recogieron, construyeron o
rebuscaron diferentes cosas en el hogar y las llevaron al colegio para hacer
algunas creaciones interesantes!
Excursión de Ciencias de Year 7
Salimos del colegio justo después de las 9 de la mañana y pasamos el resto del día en la playa en
Calahonda. Cuando llegamos, la marea estaba baja, sin embargo las rocas estaban húmedas, ¡y
preparadas para ser exploradas! Hicimos varios experimentos, por ejemplo, descubrir y analizar los
diferentes tipos de seres marinos invertebrados. Uno de los animales más comunes que encontramos fue
el cohombro, ¡y Mr Cawson encontró un pulpo! No solo hicimos experimentos sino que, al final,
tuvimos tiempo libre para nadar en el mar. ¡Fue el final perfecto para un día perfecto!

Via Verde de la Sierra
El pasado día 10 de mayo, varios intrépidos alumnos y profesores de Swans recorrieron en bicicleta, un
año más, la denominada Vía Verde de la Sierra entre los pueblos de la comarca rondeña de Puerto
Serrano y Olvera. La distancia total recorrida fue de 76 Km
Es esta ruta cruzamos varios puentes y atravesamos un total de 60
túneles, además el trazado pasa por una de las mayores buitreras de
España y por paisajes de extraordinaria belleza.
Enhorabuena a los participantes: Esteban Halmi (Y8), Jesús Sobredo
y Nicolás Forteza (Y10) y Arseniy Kobylyanskiy (Y11); así como a los
Profesores D. Tomás Prieto, D. Christian Brotons, D. Daniel Díez y
D. Miguel.
Poemas Memorizados
Este mes, tuvimos la esperada semana de Poemas Memorizados. Un
punto culminante anual del calendario escolar de Swans, este año fue
nuevamente una fiesta literaria de grandes poemas recitados por
fantásticos artistas.
La semana comenzó con Y3 y Y4 cubriendo una gama de poetas de
Kenn Nesbitt, Dr. Suess y Marriott Edgar. ¡Year 4 incluso realizó un
acróstico que ellos mismos habían escrito!
A continuación, fue el turno de Y1 y Y2. De nuevo, Kenn Nesbitt fue uno
de las favoritos con dos de sus poemas siendo recitados. Presentaron
'Top Secret' de Claire Freedman y también un recuento de la historia del 'Arca de Noé'. ¡Year 1 también
presentó 'Criaturas ocupados', que fue adaptada para ellos por Miss Jane!
Finalmente, fue el turno de Infantil y Year 6. Nuestros niños más
pequeños cautivaron a la audiencia con poemas temáticos como la
amistad y los opuestos. Nuestros alumnos mayores se decidieron por
clásicos de Alfred Noyes, T.S Eliot y Mary Howitt.
Todos los niños recitaron también poemas en español. El poema de
Year 4 fue sobre Pablo Picasso, Year 3, Year 2 y Recpetion se
concentraron en versos con humor, Year 6 en literatura y Year 1 en
fantasía. Early Years cantó una canción sobre las vocales. Los más
mayores también recitaron en francés. ¡Que talento tienen nuestros
estudiantes!
Todos los niños trabajaron muy duro en su misión de dar vida a sus poemas. ¡Enhorabuena a todos!
Visita al Centro de Rescate para Animales PAD
La visita anual al Centro de Rescate para Animales PAD fue el jueves 22 de
mayo. Los niños que recaudaron más dinero en la prueba de letreo de
palabras patrocinada el año pasado fueron invitados a visitar el centro.
Pasaron un par de horas viendo los gatos y los perros que se beneficiaron de
la generosidad increíble de Swans. La prueba de letreo de palabras
patrocinada de este año tendrá lugar la semana que viene y le agradecemos
de antemano por su continuo apoyo.

Royal British Legion de Marbella.
Nuestros delegados de Swans Primaria, Emilia y Nabil (Year 5), recibieron
un premio de la Royal British Legion de Marbella en nombre del colegio.
Los colegios de Primaria y Secundaria han sido premiados por sus
esfuerzos en la recaudación fondos, y a los niños se les nombró "
Embajadores del Colegio " por el director regional de RBL en Londres,
después de darles las gracias.
Nuevo Currículo Para La Educación Infantil
Nuestro departamento de Educación Infantil introducirá por completo el nuevo currículo británico el
próximo mes de septiembre. Estamos llegando al final de nuestro primer año introduciendo algunos
cambios y ha sido un proceso muy interesante. El currículo cubre siete áreas de aprendizaje. Las áreas
principales son Desarrollo Físico, Comunicación, Lengua y Desarrollo Personal, Social y Emocional. Las
áreas específicas son Matemáticas, Alfabetización (lectura y escritura), Compresión del Mundo y Arte y
Diseño Expresivo. Se han producido algunos cambios en nuestros temarios y horarios pero hemos
logrado cubrir nuestros objetivos a través de interesantes, emocionantes y divertidas actividades.
También hemos conseguido desarrollar nuestras zonas de juegos en el exterior y pasamos más tiempo
al aire libre, ¡incluso impartimos clases de matemáticas e inglés al aire libre también! A partir de ahora
los niños/as realizarán evaluaciones sencillas antes de pasar al curso siguiente.
En nuestro último mes de este curso terminaremos nuestros temarios y pasaremos más tiempo al aire
libre. Estamos deseando que llegue nuestro tradicional “Día de juegos con agua” y pasar más tiempo en
nuestra zona de juegos con arena. Mantengan sus dedos cruzados para que continúe este tiempo tan
agradable.
El Tesoro
En Year 3 disfrutamos de una aventura muy divertida para empezar
nuestro nuevo tema de IPC. Seguimos pistas misteriosas por todo el colegio
hasta encontrar un cofre curioso con la clave de este tema nuevo… ¡EL
TESORO! Ahora estamos aprendiendo sobre el trabajo importante de los
arqueólogos y mucho más información histórica y científica, incluyendo
como descubrieron la magnífica tumba de Tutankamón. Tenemos muchas
ganas de aprender más…
La Gran Novela de Swans
De vuelta a la semana del libro, la biblioteca planteó una pregunta… ¿Qué
pasaría si nosotros, todos juntos, escribiéramos una novela, sin plan, sobre la
marcha, en solo 5 días? La respuesta llegó a nuestras estanterías en forma
de nuestra primera novela de ficción autopublicada: “Las aventuras
surrealistas de Casper, Peppa, Batman, Leonardo Di Caprio y Barack
Obama”. No ganará el premio del libro, pero ¡es bastante buena! Los
alumnos pueden acercarse a la biblioteca para leerla y todos los
contribuyentes tienen derecho a una copia.

Swans International School “Arrasa” En El XVIII Certamen De Poesía Para
Escolares “Poetas Del 27”
Como viene sucediendo desde hace dieciocho años, el Ayuntamiento
de Málaga, a través del Área de Cultura, convocó el XVIII Certamen
de Poesía para Escolares POETAS del 27 a nivel provincial. No es la
primera vez que los alumnos de Swans destacan en este prestigioso
concurso; durante tres años consecutivos, muchos alumnos de este
centro han estado entre los tres primeros premios o entre los finalistas.
Este año ha sido todo un éxito, y cinco de los dieciséis premios que
este organismo concede, los han conseguido estudiantes de Swans. Andrea Henderson de la Fuente
(Year 9) consiguió el primer premio en su categoría, y Teresa Urbano Tortosa (Year 6) obtuvo el tercer
premio. También fueron elegidos cinco finalistas para cada categoría, y Swans se enorgullece de tener a
tres de sus estudiantes en este magnífico puesto. Las estudiantes son: Alejandra Cortés-Funes (Year 8),
Lucía Gómez Osuna (Year 10) y Amaya Crichton-Smith (Year 9). La mayoría de estos estudiantes no
son españoles, por lo que el mérito conseguido es, con creces, aún mayor, y demuestra la alta calidad
de la enseñanza del español en este centro.
Podrán leer sus poemas en un libro publicado por el Área de cultura del Ayuntamiento de Málaga,
disponible en todas las bibliotecas de la provincia.
Excursión al Parque de Year 1
El martes 6 de mayo las clases de Year 1 fueron al parque en Nagüeles
como introducción a nuestro último tema de IPC del año "Las flores y
los insectos". Cazaron mini-bestias, vieron la variedad de plantas y
árboles y realizaron una caza de tesoro en la naturaleza. También
tuvimos un picnic en el parque y terminaron jugando en los toboganes
del parque. Fue una mañana estupenda explorando el parque.
Volcanes
En Year 4 los niños
aprendieron todo sobre los
volcanes. Como parte del
estudio del Diseño y la
Tecnología, construyeron
sus propios modelos de
volcanes. Como final del
tema ambas clases fueron
al parque a ¡'estallar' los
volcanes! Los niños se
divirtieron mucho y fue un placer escuchar el
colectivo ¡Wow!' cuando la 'lava' se derramó.

La Yincana por Marbella
El día dos de mayo Year 10 fue a la excursión de La Yincana.
Consistía en ir por Marbella respondiendo preguntas
y hablando con los habitantes de Marbella para mejorar el
nivel de la lengua. Los estudiantes fueron por el centro de
Marbella en parejas, yendo a varios sitios, por ejemplo: el
Mercado Central, el Paseo Marítimo, el Parque de la Alameda
y mucho más. Las preguntas hechas eran de varios tipos,
algunas donde tenías que hacer fotos, escribir unos hechos de
historia y también preguntar los precios de diferentes objetos.
Esto continuó durante toda la mañana hasta las dos y media
cuando fuimos a comer en un restaurante que se llama EBE.
Había tapas, bocadillos, patatas fritas y ensaladas mixtas que
estaban muy ricas y eran baratas. Después fuimos al paseo marítimo para intentar hacer algunas
preguntas más, pero no había más tiempo y no pudimos acabar. A las tres y media el día se acabó con
sonrisas y recuerdos. Con esta excursión hemos cumplido nuestro propósito porque ha ayudado a
muchas personas a mejorar la lengua española y saber un poco más sobre la ciudad en la que vivimos
porque aunque sea muy pequeña, está llena de cosas que ver y hacer.
Melissa Bresler y Isabel Brogsitter Year 10
Mil Millas y un Millón de Palabras
En la semana del libro, se retó a los alumnos de secundaria a leer un
millón de palabras, o por tutorías o de manera individual. Se han
concedido dos premios, uno para el grupo Year 8TJ y otro para
Jasmijn De Grebber, que han ganado una Fiesta del té del
Sombrerero Loco y 50 euros respectivamente. Todos los alumnos
que lean el millón de palabras serán recompensados también. Muy
bien hecho a todos por este extraordinario logro. En un principio,
muchos se intimidaron con el desafío, pero se ha demostrado que
un viaje de mil millas empieza con un simple paso.
Year 5, Parque Cocodrilos y Esculturas en la Playa
El martes 20 de mayo los niños de cuatro años hicieron un viaje al parque de cocodrilos en Torremolinos. Esta fue la actividad de punto de
entrada para su nuevo tema 'Dinosaurios'. Los niños disfrutaron de una
visita guiada por el parque, que incluyó
la oportunidad de sujetar un cocodrilo
bebé. Los niños aprendieron mucho sobre estas criaturas intrigantes, incluyendo el hecho de que sus antepasados se remontan a la Era Mesozoica.
Tras una mañana informativa en el parque de cocodrilos, los niños
fueron a la playa de Marbella donde se encontraron con algunos de
sus padres. Por la tarde hicieron esculturas de arena de dinosaurios.
¡El nivel fue muy alto y se recompensó a los niños entonces con un helado! Con todo, fue un día maravilloso para Year 4 y sus maestros.

Excursión a Marruecos 2014
Desde el 1 hasta el 4 de mayo, varios estudiantes de IB fuimos a una excursión a
Marruecos, organizada por el colegio. Desde un principio ésta visita fue organizada
para que fueran un mínimo de 20 estudiantes pero por unas u otras razones, solo
fuimos 6. Ésta excursión tenía como objetivo añadir horas de CAS a nuestros diarios
y sobre todo, ayudar a una organización llamada Rifcom, de la que se hablará más
tarde.
Llegamos a Marruecos a las 16:00 (hora de allí). Fue entonces cuando conocimos a
Domingo, el hombre que nos dejó temporalmente su casa, al ser un grupo muy
pequeño, durante nuestra estancia.
Cuando llegamos a nuestro destino, Chef-Chauen, nos asombró la belleza del lugar;
el modo en el que todo el pueblo estuviera pintado en azul, las casas situadas en la
ladera de la montaña, el río, y las tiendecitas…
Al principio nos costó un poco adaptarnos a las costumbres, y ellos a acostumbrarse a nosotros. Tras un
largo paseo por ‘La Medina’, o centro, fuimos a comer a un pequeño y escondido restaurante. Las sillas y las
mesas apenas tenían 50 centímetros de altura y no había un menú o carta. Te servían lo que tenían y
cocinaban en ese momento. La comida estaba muy buena, cocinada de manera distinta pero muy buena. El
pan fue una de las cosas que más nos gustó a todos durante todo el viaje.
Al llegar a Benizayed, donde nos esperaban muchos niños, nos sorprendimos al ver las condiciones en las
que ellos estudiaban. El pueblo, al estar más alejado y aislado de todo, era más pobre y se notó mucho. La
escuela, probablemente sólo de primaria, tenía tan solo 3 clases, y sólo una era utilizada. El techo y las
paredes se caían, y se podían literalmente mover; tanto que la lluvia arrastraba literalmente la clase hacía un
barranco. Además de esto, el suministro de agua había sido cortado ya que las autoridades consideraban
que el riego de las hectáreas de marihuana beneficiaba más a la gente. Todo para ganar dinero, que era muy
necesitado. Los baños consistían de un agujero en el suelo, y debajo, un cubo. Nos dejaron atónitos en
menos de 5 minutos. Fue muy duro verlos a todos allí, sobre todo viendo que ignoran lo que nosotros
tenemos y ellos no.
Al empezar la caminata, pasamos por varias casas (medio construidas)
y les dimos a las familias las donaciones que muchos estudiantes y
familias nos proporcionaron. Tuvimos que hacerlo disimuladamente
porque si no, todos los niños correrían hacia nosotros con esperanza de
que hubiera algo para cada uno. Las familias sentían que nos lo debían
recompensar invitándonos a comer y demás pero debíamos seguir
nuestro camino.
Cuando de verdad empezamos la ascensión hacia las 14:00, los niños
que nos guiaron nos llevaban por zonas en las que no había un
sendero marcado, lo que lo hizo más difícil. Nos enseñaron muchas
palabras en árabe y era realmente difícil comunicarse porque ninguno sabía lo que decía el otro. Todo el
camino lo hicieron con un par de sandalias, sin agua o comida que nos rechazaron.
Cuando hubimos llegado a la cima, nos resguardamos del sol y comimos. Luego, tras recuperarnos,
empezamos a bajar, esta vez por otro camino en mejores condiciones. A medida de bajábamos veíamos más
pueblos, más pobres y repartimos las últimas donaciones, incluyendo unas zapatillitas para una niña de 3 /
4 añitos.
Cuando por fin llegamos al coche, los niños seguían allí esperándonos, intrigados. Les dimos ropa y dinero
a nuestros guías, muy orgullosos de su trabajo y volvimos a Chef-Chauen para acabar el día, cansados.
Caminamos unas 3 horas y media, muy duras y calurosas horas.

Excursión a Marruecos (continuación)
Las chicas fuimos a probar el ‘Hammam’, donde los árabes normalmente se bañan una vez a la semana.
Fuimos con Mari, co-fundadora de Rifcom, fue muy buena con nosotras y
estamos orgullosas de seguir en contacto con ella. Nos explicó muchas de las
costumbres de allí y nos ayudó mucho en general. Normalmente hay una mujer
que te lava, tirándote cubos y cubos de agua, enjabonándote y dándote masajes
después. La mujer, y en general las árabes son muy bruscas de carácter, pero el
masaje estuvo bien y fue muy relajante, tras haber hecho senderismo. Fue una
experiencia del todo nueva y bastante agradable.
Fuimos a nuestro siguiente destino: Bezcayama, donde tuvo lugar el partido de fútbol, el evento organizado
por Rifcom y más contribuyentes, al que vinimos a jugar. Cuando llegamos, nos instalamos en casa de
Mohammed e inmediatamente fuimos a ver el terreno en el que el partido iba a tener lugar. Yo
personalmente me asusté. No había césped evidentemente, pero había muchas piedras y rocas, y si te caías
te hacías mucho daño, incluso algunos contribuyentes vinieron acompañados de niños y no les dejaron
jugar.
Estuvimos toda la tarde ordenando los zapatos donados por tallas, organizándolo todo para el día
siguiente. Cada niño debía tener al final del partido una medalla, un certificado, una bolsa con libros y
cepillos de dientes y unas botas de fútbol.
Nos levantamos a las 7:30 de la mañana y por suerte las maquinas que prometieron retirar la mayoría de las
piedras hicieron muy bien el trabajo, el campo ya estaba listo. Al principio
parecía un caos, pero ya lo habíamos previsto, todos los niños estaban muy
contentos de participar, algunos confesaron que ese era el mejor día de su
vida.
Lola y yo debíamos enseñarles a los niños la importancia de la higiene dental.
Fue difícil comunicarse ya que la mayoría no sabían ni francés, ni inglés, ni
español. Así que tuvimos que hacer un mini teatro, sin necesidad de hablar.
Recogimos terrones de azúcar y galletas, y los usamos para ‘comérnoslo’ y
actuar como si nos afectase al dolor de dientes. Un hombre que ayudaba a
Rifcom, nos ayudó proporcionando comentarios en árabe mientras nosotras actuábamos así que estamos
seguras de que el mensaje les llegó de algún modo.
Cuando la competición terminó, el equipo ganador se llevó el trofeo y cada uno recibió lo previsto, aunque
algunos no recibieron medallas ya que habían demasiados participantes, pero todos recibieron un diploma
y calzado, lo que estuvo bastante bien. Después los niños recibieron un bocata, proporcionado por nosotros,
Rifcom, y nosotros fuimos invitados a comer en una casa no muy lejos del terreno.
Desafortunadamente, tuvimos que decir adiós a Marruecos, cogimos nuestras cosas, nos despedimos de
Mohammed y cogimos el ferry. Nos despedimos de Tom y Mary de Rifcom y volvimos a España con Dom,
y su coche.
Me ha encantado este viaje y espero volver a ir. Creo que todos podemos
decir que nos lo hemos pasado genial, y hemos hecho buenos amigos. Ha
sido una verdadera experiencia y hemos vivido por un tiempo en la
realidad. Les recomendamos a los futuros estudiantes de IB, que vayan sin
duda alguna, veréis como es el mundo en realidad y conoceréis sitios y
costumbres nuevas. Los recuerdos y la satisfacción personal que nos
hemos llevado de allí son inigualables e inexplicables, me alegro mucho
de haber podido ir.

Fútbol Masculino Sub15
Fue una gran actuación la de nuestro equipo Sub15 en su
primer encuentro de 11 jugadores. Un gol de Manuel en el
primer tiempo, y un tiro a puerta a manos de Fran en el
segundo tiempo, hizo que el partido lo tuviéramos
prácticamente ganado, pero Rota, que era el quipo dominante,
se mereció el gol de consolación y nos sometió a presión en los
últimos minutos del partido. ¡Una experiencia que hay que
repetir! Los alumnos que representaron al colegio fueron: Alex
Tawil, Tomas Williams, Jesper De Jonge, Jin-Yi Lui (Capitán),
James Howard, Dylan Ramírez, Eugeny Popov, Manuel
Anguita,

Día de Deportes de Key Stage 2
Year 3, 4 y 5 participaron en una variedad de carreras durante su
Día de Deportes incluyendo una
carrera, relé y carrera de
obstáculos. Enhorabuena a las
palomas que lograron la mayor
cantidad de puntos y ganaron el
trofeo. Los puntos del Día del
Deporte de Key Stage 1 se
añadieron a los totales de cada
casa, haciendo las palomas a los
ganadores absolutos.
Campeón de Pitch & Putt
Felipe Barrena Rodríguez ha sido el gran protagonista del
Campeonato de Andalucía Sub 16 de Pitch & Putt 2014,
que se ha disputado este fin de semana en el Real Club de
Golf Guadalmina (San Pedro de Alcántara, Marbella).
La presente edición será recordada por la exhibición de
juego del golfista local, que se ha adjudicado el título con
un soberbio registro de 99 golpes (-9).
El jugador malagueño se situó lider al término de la
primera jornada gracias a una excelente vuelta de 51
golpes (-3). Sin embargo, lo mejor estaba por llegar y ya el
segundo y definitivo día, Felipe Barrena se ha mostrado
intratable tras entregar en casa club una estratosférica tarjeta de 48 golpes (-6) con un eagle (hoyo en
uno), cinco birdies y un solo bogey en el 18.

Inter-Escolar de Atletismo
El jueves 8 de mayo, el quipo de atletismo formado por alumnos desde
Year 7 a Year 10 se dirigió al estadio municipal de Cártama en Málaga
para participar en las competiciones inter escolares de atletismo.
Obtuvimos un 4º lugar en la clasificación general. Los alumnos
participaron en las siguientes pruebas: los 100 metros lisos, carrera de
relevos 4x100 metros, 400 metros, 800 metros lisos,
lanzamiento de peso, lanzamiento de jabalina, salto
de altura y salto de longitud. Tenemos que hacer
una mención especial a los siguientes alumnos:

Waller, segundo en salto de altura; Marta Rodríguez, segunda en los 800m; Begoña
Traveso, segunda en los100m, Camilla Frismodt, segunda en salto de altura; Marina

de jabalina; equipo masculino de relevos de Year 7, tercero; Malen Perurena, tercera
en los 800m; Patricia Barra Martín, tercera en los 400m; Rebecca Polvani, tercera en
los 400m; equipo femenino de relevos de Year 7, tercero; equipo femenino de relevos de Year 8, tercero;
Alejandra Cortes-Funes, tercera en salto de longitud; Mar González, segunda en lanzamiento de peso;
Salma Pérez, tercera en lanzamiento de jabalina. ¡Bien hecho a todos los participantes!
Voleibol en Laude
El miércoles, 21 de mayo los equipos de voleibol Sub13
y Sub15 fueron a Laude para jugar en el torneo inter
escolar de voleibol. Swans participó con 8 equipos y
todos los jugadores lo hicieron muy bien. Antes del
torneo, 70 estudiantes estuvieron entrenándose para
esta competición, y 53 alumnos fueron elegidos. Estos
son los resultados:
