25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently." It's important to pay attention to the details of the parable Jesus tells in today's Gospel. At first glance, it might seem
as if Jesus is encouraging us to be dishonest. But in fact, it's just the opposite.
The steward in this tale was reported to his master "for squandering his property." In other words, the steward was not being responsible with what he was
in charge of. And the master was ready to fire him on account of it. But then,
the steward had a change of heart. (This isn't so hard to comprehend-sometimes it takes a real threat for us to realize we need to change our ways,
doesn't it?) So the steward went to the people from whom he had previously
collected money to "make friends" with them. How? By reducing their debts.
This might seem to be dishonest yet again, but we need to bear in mind that in the end, the master was pleased
with the steward's behavior. So this debt reduction must not have affected the master's pocketbook. Rather, it
seems probable that the steward had originally hiked up what the debtors owed the master and put the extra cash
in his own pocket. This was the sort of extortion that was common in those days, among tax collectors for example. Now, when the steward was about to lose his position, he thought it wise to go back and return that "dishonest
wealth" to the folks who had lost it, and gain some sympathy in the process. So, in the end, the steward was making up for his previous cheating behavior by doing something RIGHT and smart. It's this honest behavior that will
enable him to take his place in "eternal dwellings." And surely our honest behavior will have the same effect.
Sharing the Gospel
You are God's special friend. He takes good care of you. He gives you food and water. He keeps
you clean and safe from evils. God blesses you each and every day. He gives you friends with whom
to play and watches over you. God wants you to walk in his ways. God trusts you to take care of
your body and soul. He trusts you to help others, too. Jesus wants you to be honest. When you tell
lies, your friends will not be able to trust you. Tell the truth. If you find a wallet, bring it to the
police station. If you see someone drop some money, pick it up and give it back to them. If someone left a jacket or toy on the playground, don't take it. Turn it in to "lost and found." When you
are honest with small things, people will see that you can be trusted with bigger things, too.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for taking good care of me.
Something to Draw
Draw a picture of yourself giving money back to someone who dropped it.
Mission for the Week
When you go outside to play at school, look for someone who is alone.
Offer to be a friend and play together.
Holy Year of Mercy—The Words of Pope Francis
Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These
words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian
faith. Mercy has become living and visible in Jesus of
Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him. The Father,
“rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4), after having revealed his
name to Moses as “a God merciful and gracious, slow
to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (Ex 34:6), has never ceased to show, in various
ways throughout history, his divine nature. In the
“fullness of time” (Gal 4:4), when everything had
been arranged according to his plan of salvation, he
sent his only Son into the world, born of the Virgin
Mary, to reveal his love for us in a definitive way.
Whoever sees Jesus sees the Father (cf. Jn 14:9). Jesus
of Nazareth, by his words, his actions, and his entire
person reveals the mercy of God. We need constantly
to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring
of joy, serenity, and peace.

paz.
