March 2015
A Note From the Principal...
Walter Douglas Elementary School is focused on academic excellence! You can feel the energy here on campus as staff and
students get ready to concentrate on accomplishing our learning goals for the final quarter of the year. Please make sure your
child takes their studies seriously this month as teachers will be preparing students for the new AZMerit testing in April.
Remember that research shows students who complete homework on a regular basis increase their confidence and do better in
school. Education is a partnership between you, your child, and the school. Please assist us in helping your child demonstrate
they are ready to be promoted to the next grade by encouraging focus and dedication to school work.
As they say at the U of A, it is time to “Bear Down”!
Upcoming Events:
March 5th- Success Assembly February’s Star Students will be honored. Please join us at 8:00 a.m. in the MPR.
March 6th- End of 3rd Quarter. There will be no school this day as teachers will be compiling report cards to be distributed the
following week.

come by and start the process for registering next year. We will begin registration for kindergarteners March 9th. It is crucial we

March 11th- Title I Spring Review Meeting, at 2:15 in room 29. Prior to the PTO meeting we will be sharing Title One Parent

March 12th-13th - Parent/Teacher Conferences. School will be dismissed at noon on both of these days. Conferences are

P.A.W.S. Corner with Mr. Nogami
Hello Bulldog Families. It’s hard to believe that the end of the third quarter is already upon us! Here at Walter Douglas, our
students are working hard to make good choices and follow P.A.W.S. This is shown by the record high number of
PAWSitive referrals earned this month. As you may remember, our school has been working hard to earn an Ice Cream
Social this quarter. I am happy to report that we are very close to earning it! We need six days with no office referrals and
we have four. Be sure to check in with your child every night. Some things you can ask are: did you follow P.A.W.S.
today? Did you do your homework?
Here’s to a great end of the third quarter and an even better fourth quarter!
Hola Familias de Walter Douglas. Es difícil creer que el final de tercer cuarto de semestre ha llegado! Aquí en
Walter Douglas, nuestros estudiantes están trabajando arduamente para hacer decisiones correctas y seguir

come home. There will be no school on March 6th. We will be having parent teacher conferences on

First Grade News
Thank you for the Kleenex, snacks, hand sanitizer and baby wipes that you have sent in.
Spring conferences will be conducted in early March. Please check your child’s homework folder
and backpack for the note concerning this. Please be sure to attend the conference that we
schedule. If unable to attend, please call the office to reschedule. If you are scheduled for a
conference we will not be sending the report card home until we meet.
We will be making Easter baskets in class. We need your help to fill the baskets. Look for an Easter note to come
home in the homework folder soon. Thank you in advance for your help!
Happy March to 2nd grade families!
Thank you to all of the chaperones who came with us to help on the Rodeo field trip! We
all had a great time! Also, thank you to the families that have donated to your child’s
classroom! If you have not yet made a donation, please considering bringing either a box of
tissues or a healthy snack for your child’s classroom. We appreciate your help! Lastly,
please remember to be completing the fluency and problem of the week math homework every night as they are
both due on Fridays. Thank you for all that you do to support your child’s education.
~The 2nd Grade Teachers
Hello Parents! Third grade is looking forward to the month of
March. We have completed our district assessments in reading and
math, and are now on the countdown to our final state test! This
test will be given in April, and will cover all of the content taught
throughout the school year. The best ways to help prepare your child for this test is to make
sure they are on time and at school each day of the week, completing all homework
assignments, and reading a good book each and every night! Finally, thank you for continuing
to work with your child to complete the Reading Reflection Log and Math Problem Solving
each week, and encouraging your child to demonstrate their personal best each and every day!
VERY IMPORTANT GRAND CANYON INFORMATION:
The Grand Canyon permission slip will be sent home the week of March 9. It is
extremely important that you complete all the information. The fee of $75.00 is
due by March 27.
We will be going to Saguaro National Park on March 16. Students will need a sack lunch,
sunscreen, a bottle of water, and a hat. The permission slip will be sent home the first week in
March.
Thank you for your continued support of our math and reading goals. We appreciate that you are
taking time to work with your children!
We made it through our final District
Assessment! Thank you all for your support in
helping your children be successful.
Parent teacher conferences are coming soon so please watch for
paperwork coming home in your child’s backpack. Please also watch for the
yellow parent involvement sheets that come home every Monday, they are
to be completed with you and signed. Thanks again for your support and
involvement in your child’s education. Lastly, please continue to read with
your child and practice math facts!
As we head into the last quarter of 6th grade and your children’s
elementary school years, we are thankful for the time that we have had
with your kids this year. The month of March is a busy one for us. We
look forward to meeting with many of you during Parent-Teacher
Conferences on March 12th and 13th. On Thursday, March 19th, we will go on a field trip to hear
some chamber music. We are also going to be participating in the annual Flowing Wells District
