O ur annual meditations for this year's "Lenten Struggle" open with the story in Genesis of the covenant God made with Noah, marked by "rainbow in the sky" that would testify to all humanity that God was not here to punish and destroy, but to heal and save. That sign, though, because of a painful personal struggle --Noah had had the chance to intercede for humanity, but had chosen to save himself and his family, only. The entire story is a stark reminder that when we are "in life" only "for ourselves," everyone gets hurt, dies a little, and loses everything. The second reading reminds early Christians that Jesus, "went to preach to the spirits in prison," an early teaching from Ephesians and I Peter that Jesus had gone to Sheol (the place of the dead) and given them the "good news" that they were being set them free to rise in the resurrection of the dead. In other words, the struggle goes beyond this life, but it ends well. And the Gospel reading is the two verse account in the Gospel of Mark of Jesus' period of testing/ struggle in the desert, where "He was with the wild beasts, and angels waited on Him"...perhaps a description of all our lives, when we think about it. So the first weekend of Lent sets us up to see that our struggles are leading us to the rainbow--to the Light of God. Remember that, as you struggle along this Lenten season. - Fr. La alianza, simbolizada con un arcoíris, nos da a entender que Dios no está para castigar, pero para sanar y salvar. En la historia, Noé tuvo una lucha personal, cuando pudo interceder por toda la humanidad, eligió salvarse a sí mismo y a su familia. Es un recuerdo que cuando uno hace algo por uno mismo, hay alguien que siempre se lastima, que muere, o que pierde todo. La segunda lectura nos recuerda que Jesús fue a la cárcel a predicar sobre los espíritus, una enseñanza de los Efesios y de la Primera Carta de Pedro que dice que Jesús fue a Sheol (lugar de los muertes), y les dijo que están libros y serán resucitados de la muerte. En otras palabras, la lucha va más allá que esta vida, pero termina bien. Y la lectura del Evangelio de Marcos cuenta de la tentación de Jesús, “estaba con bestias y los ángeles lo esperaban.” A lo mejor ésta sea una descripción de todas nuestras vidas, si lo piensan bien. Entonces la primera lectura de Cuaresma nos dicen que las luchas nos preparan para el arcoíris—hacia la Luz de Dios. A s we begin Lent, we are given the symbol of Noah and the rainbow. After God destroys almost all of life on earth, He hangs up the bow in the sky, transforming a weapon of war into a symbol of the peace treaty that God is now declaring with humanity and with all of creation. In First Peter the flood waters become a symbol of the waters of baptism, which is both "an end of vice and a beginning of virtue."Christ is our ark, leading us through deep and dangerous waters to everlasting life. He is the ark in whom we are sheltered as God destroys sin and even death itself. Let us take time this Lent to look at the different symbols given to us and reflect on how they play a part in our life journey towards Everlasting peace. She worked for nine years in the Diocese of Pueblo, CO addressing culture, faith and immigration in the development of an adult faith formation program in Spanish for Hispanic ministers in Southern Colorado. Hilda has been a member of her religious community since 1994 and in 2008 received her Doctorate in Ministry, with a concentration in US Latino/a theology from Barry University (Miami Shores, Fl). She resides in Los Angeles.
