Primera Lectura: Deuteronomio 30: 10-14
En aquellos días, habló Moisés al pueblo y le dijo: "Escucha la
voz del Señor, tu Dios, que te manda guardar sus mandamientos y disposiciones escritos en el libro de esta ley. Y conviértete al Señor tu Dios, con todo tu corazón y con toda tu
alma. Estos mandamientos que te doy, no son superiores a
tus fuerzas ni están fuera de tu alcance. No están en el cielo,
de modo que pudieras decir: '¿Quién subirá por nosotros al
cielo para que nos los traiga, los escuchemos y podamos
cumplirlos?' Ni tampoco están al otro lado del mar, de modo
que pudieras objetar: '¿Quién cruzará el mar por nosotros
para que nos los traiga, los escuchemos y podamos cumplirlos?' Por el contrario, todos mis mandamientos están muy a
tu alcance, en tu boca y en tu corazón, para que puedas cumplirlos".

Segunda Lectura: Colosenses 1: 15-20
Cristo es la imagen de Dios invisible, el primogénito de toda
la creación, porque en él tienen su fundamento todas las
cosas creadas, del cielo y de la tierra, las visibles y las invisibles, sin excluir a los tronos y dominaciones, a los principados y potestades. Todo fue creado por medio de él y para él.
Él existe antes que todas las cosas, y todas tienen su consistencia en él. Él es también la cabeza del cuerpo, que es la
Iglesia. Él es el principio, el primogénito de entre los muertos, para que sea el primero en todo. Porque Dios quiso que
en Cristo habitara toda plenitud y por él quiso reconciliar
consigo todas las cosas, del cielo y de la tierra, y darles la paz
por medio de su sangre, derramada en la cruz.

En aquel tiempo, se presentó ante Jesús un doctor de la ley
para ponerlo a prueba y le preguntó: "Maestro, ¿qué debo
hacer para conseguir la vida eterna?" Jesús le dijo: "¿Qué es
lo que está escrito en la ley? ¿Qué lees en ella?" El doctor de
la ley contestó: "Amarás al Señor tu Dios, con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con todas tus fuerzas y con todo tu
ser, y a tu prójimo como a ti mismo". Jesús le dijo: "Has contestado bien; si haces eso, vivirás". El doctor de la ley, para
justificarse, le preguntó a Jesús: "¿Y quién es mi prójimo?"
Jesús le dijo: "Un hombre que bajaba por el camino de Jerusalén a Jericó, cayó en manos de unos ladrones, los cuales lo
robaron, lo hirieron y lo dejaron medio muerto. Sucedió que
por el mismo camino bajaba un sacerdote, el cual lo vio y
pasó de largo. De igual modo, un levita que pasó por ahí, lo
vio y siguió adelante. Pero un samaritano que iba de viaje, al
verlo, se compadeció de él, se le acercó, ungió sus heridas
con aceite y vino y se las vendó; luego lo puso sobre su cabalgadura, lo llevó a un mesón y cuidó de él. Al día siguiente
sacó dos denarios, se los dio al dueño del mesón y le dijo:
'Cuida de él y lo que gastes de más, te lo pagaré a mi regreso'. ¿Cuál de estos tres te parece que se portó como prójimo
del hombre que fue asaltado por los ladrones?" El doctor de
la ley le respondió: "El que tuvo compasión de él". Entonces
Jesús le dijo: "Anda y haz tú lo mismo".

of the Lord, your God, and keep his commandments and
statutes that are written in this book of the law, when you

soul. "For this command that I enjoin on you today is not too
mysterious and remote for you. It is not up in the sky, that
you should say, 'Who will go up in the sky to get it for us and
tell us of it, that we may carry it out?' Nor is it across the sea,
that you should say, 'Who will cross the sea to get it for us
and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?' No, it is something
very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts;
you have only to carry it out."

There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and
said, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus
said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read
it?" He said in reply, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with
all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and
with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." He replied to him, "You have answered correctly; do this and you
will live." But because he wished to justify himself, he said to
Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man fell
victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him
half-dead. A priest happened to be going down that road,
but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.
Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him,
he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler
who came upon him was moved with compassion at the
sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over
his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his
own animal, took him to an inn, and cared for him. The next
day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the in
keeper with the instruction, 'Take care of him. If you spend
more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my
way back.' Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers' victim?" He answered, "The one who
treated him with mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

REFLEXIÓN DOMINICAL / SUNDAY REFLECTION
EL BUEN SAMARITANO
THE GOOD SAMARITAN
Ha pasado ya al acervo de nuestro idioma. No sabemos
siquiera si existió el samaritano de la parábola; pero hoy
se llama “buen samaritano” a cualquier persona de buen
corazón que ayuda a sus hermanos, sin pedir nada a
cambio. No hay mejor cosa que encontrarse un buen samaritano cuando uno anda por
los caminos de la vida perdido,
sin rumbo y quizá herido y vapuleado. Hasta es posible que
nos sorprenda su generosidad

It has already become a part of our language. We don’t
know for sure if the “Samaritan” from the parable really
existed, but today we call a “good Samaritan” anyone
who with a gracious heart helps his neighbor, without seeking anything in return. There is nothing better than to find a
good Samaritan when one is
journeying lost through life,
without direction, and perhaps
injured and beaten. It is possible that their unlimited generosity may surprise us; the kindness we get freely is a contrast,
since we are very accustomed
to paying for everything we
receive.
La parábola de Jesús va más
allá, porque el samaritano no es
solo uno que se paró a atender a aquel hombre abandonado y herido a la vera del camino. En su parábola, Jesús
pone al samaritano en relación con otros personajes bien
conocidos del pueblo judío: un sacerdote y un levita; los
dos son representantes de la religión oficial judía; los dos
ofician en el templo y son mediadores entre Dios y los
hombres. Sacerdotes y levitas se supone que tienen un
acceso a Dios del que carecen el resto de los creyentes
—lo mismo que todavía hoy muchos cristianos piensan de
sacerdotes y religiosos—. El samaritano, desde la perspectiva judía, pertenecía prácticamente al extremo opuesto
de la escala religiosa. Era un pueblo que había mezclado
la religión judía con otras creencias extrañas; era traidor a
la fe auténtica, un pueblo impuro. Los judíos trataban de
evitar todo contacto con los samaritanos. El contacto con
un samaritano hacía que el judío se volviese impuro. Por
eso, tiene mucho más peso el hecho de que Jesús contraponga en la parábola a los representantes oficiales de la
religión, un sacerdote y un levita, con un samaritano, pecador e impuro; y, lo que es peor, que sea precisamente
el samaritano el que sale bien parado, el que se comporta como Dios quiere, el que es capaz de acercarse al prójimo desamparado y abandonado. Dicho de otra manera, el que se hace prójimo —cercano— de su hermano
necesitado.
En realidad, Jesús está replanteando nuestra relación con
Dios. La cercanía al hermano necesitado es mucho más
importante que el culto oficial y litúrgico del templo. Mucho más valioso que ofrecer sacrificios y oraciones, es
adorar a Dios en el hermano que sufre por la razón que
sea. Aquí Jesús no es sacerdote sino profeta. Jesús se aleja del templo y nos invita a vivir nuestra relación con Dios
en el encuentro diario, habitual, a pie de calle, con nuestros hermanos; ahí es donde se juega nuestra relación con
Dios. Solo si somos capaces de amar así, podremos decir
que amamos a Dios, porque, como dice Juan, el que dice que ama a Dios y no ama a su hermano, es un mentiroso. Ni más ni menos.

¿Me acerco a y me intereso por mi prójimo? ¿Les acompaño en sus necesidades? ¿Soy un “buen samaritano”?
The parable from Jesus goes
beyond this. The Samaritan is not just a person who
stopped to help the abandoned and injured man at the
edge of the road. In his parable, Jesus relates the Samaritan with other well known personalities to the Jewish people: a priest and a Levite; both are representatives of the
official Jewish religion; both officiate in the temple and are
mediators between God and men. Priests and Levites are
supposed to have the access to God that the rest of the
believers lack, which is similar to the thinking that is shared
by many Christians regarding priests and religious today.
From the Jewish perspective, the Samaritan was on the
direct opposite of the religious scale. It was a people that
had mixed the Jewish religion with other strange beliefs; a
traitor to the authentic faith and an impure people. The
Jews tried to avoid all contact with the Samaritans. Contact with Samaritans caused Jews to become impure. This
is why, the fact that Jesus compared in his parable the
representatives of the official religion with a Samaritan,
sinner and impure, carried much greater weight; and,
what is worse, it’s the Samaritan who precisely comes out
looking good in the parable, behaving as God wanted by
approaching his forsaken and abandoned neighbor. In
other words, he became the closest neighbor to his brother in need.
In reality, Jesus was transforming our relationship with God.
The closeness to our neighbor in need is more important
than the official worship and liturgy of the temple. Worshipping God in the brother or sister that suffers for whatever
reason is more important than offering sacrifices and prayers. Here Jesus is not a priest but a prophet. Jesus moves
away from the temple and invites us to live a relationship
with God through daily and routine encounters, walking
the street, with our brothers and sisters; this is where our
relationship with God plays out. Only if we are capable of
loving this way, can we say that we love God. As John
says, one who says he loves God and does not love his
neighbor is a liar. Nothing more nor less.

Do I approach and show an interest for my neighbor? Do I
accompany them in their needs? Am I a good Samaritan?

THE IMPORTANCE OF AUTHENTIC FRIENDSHIPS

Living out virtue is not an easy task, nor is changing areas of your life that we have grown accustomed to. I’ve
encountered many young people who want to rise to the challenge and live out virtue. But they’ve also
showed me a major difficulty they face:
“What if our friends don’t agree with virtue?”
It is not that our generation doesn’t want to live truth, it’s that sometimes they are afraid to live it alone. Our
morals and values are shaped by our parents and once we get older begin to change accordance with
those around us. In our youth, a longing for acceptance can force someone to change what he or she believe.
Two people in an authentic friendship seek growth. They share the same morals and values and encourage
each other to be the best they can be. It is a friendship where two people seek to build one another up and
never tear each other down. Together they strive for virtue and help lift up the other if they fall.
“In the virtuous friendship the two
friends are committed to pursuing
something outside themselves,
something that goes beyond each of
their own self-interests.”
– Edward Sri
This friendship exists not to use one another to achieve their purpose
but because they will the best for another. Virtue isn’t something
that is high in priority for a teenager, but it’s something that I know I
wanted in the deepest of my heart. Even if I was at a party, if I’d
been drinking, if I had given into physical temptations, I longed for
something more. However, I would attempt to ignore it and often
gave into giving up my way of thinking to have more friends and be
better known.
I failed to see that desire for more until I was in college. I had to stop being so close to other people who
weren’t helping lead me to be the best version of me. These people weren’t horrible people, but in order to
grow the distance was necessary. I sought out people who I know would help me and were reaching for the
same goal.
There is something about that common goal outside of oneself; something
that ignites a fire within you to truly seek a life worth fully living. When I look
back on the friendships I have lost I am grateful for what I learned from each
of those people. I don’t believe you have to lose everyone to be true to your
beliefs. But having that one real friendship where you are both striving makes
such a difference, the difference of knowing that we are not alone in choosing a different way of living. Our world should know that it is possible to live
out virtue in a culture promoting mediocrity in life and in friendship.

Jubileo de la Misericordia

¿Podría haber alguien que contradijera la excelente lección de misericordia en la parábola del Buen Samaritano? ¡Claro, la audiencia de Jesús que era religiosamente devota lo hizo! Muy poca simpatía gozaba alguien lo
suficientemente tonto como para viajar solo por “el
camino de Jericó” lleno de criminales. Bastante simpatía
tenía un sacerdote y un levita, quienes a prisa se dirigían
a realizar su trabajo en el templo, y que preferían evitar
hacer una obra de misericordia evitando quedar impuros
para la realización del culto. Nada de simpatía para la persona atenta que presenta Jesús. Para los judíos los samaritanos eran sus enemigos, tanto religiosa como políticamente.
Jesús los desafía —y también a nosotros— a buscar la presencia de Dios no solamente en la hermosura de la liturgia
sino en esa persona extraña viajera que cayo en desgracia.
Observa la presencia de Dios aún en alguien que está fuera
de la Ley, quien hace una obra de misericordia que brota
más de la bondad instintiva de su corazón que por sus obligaciones religiosas. Ya que Jesús se hizo nuestro “Buen Samaritano” pese a nuestras culpas y necedad, ¿quiénes somos nosotros para medir nuestra misericordia? ¿Quién es mi
prójimo? (Lucas 10:29). ¡La próxima persona que veamos que
necesita una obra de misericordia! Sin condiciones, sin limites, sin excepciones. Especialmente en este Año Jubilar de
misericordia, Jesús ordenó “vete y haz tú lo mismo” (10:37).

Could anyone object to Jesus’ supreme lesson in
mercy, the parable of the Good Samaritan? Jesus’
devoutly religious audience certainly did! Scant
sympathy for anyone foolish enough to travel
crime-ridden “Jericho Highway” alone. Much
sympathy for priest and Levite, hurrying to assigned
temple ministry, unwilling to risk ritual impurity
through hands-on mercy. No sympathy for Jesus’ scandalous hero. Samaritans were religious apostates and
political enemies. Jesus challenges them—and us—to
seek God’s presence not only in liturgical beauty but in
a fellow traveler’s self-inflicted misfortunes. See God’s
presence even in someone outside the law, whose
hands-on mercy springs not from religious obligation
but from the heart’s instinctive goodness. Since Jesus
became our “Good Samaritan” despite our foolishness
and sins, who are we to ration our mercy? “Who is my
neighbor?” (Luke 10:29). The next person we see who
needs hands-on mercy! No conditions, no limits, no exceptions. Especially in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Jesus
commands, “Go and do likewise” (10:37).
