Javier Salazar triunfa en
las primarias para sheriff
Por Roberto J. Pérez
[email protected]
En la última contabilidad de los
votos de las elecciones primarias,
Javier Salazar, aspirante a sheriff
del condado de Bexar, era el claro
vencedor de la contienda política,
y, seguramente, contendrá por
el puesto con la actual Sheriff
Susan Parmelau en las elecciones
generales en noviembre próximo.
En una candente campaña entre
cuatro candidatos demócratas por
esta posición, Javier Salazar tenía
a su favor más del 40 por ciento
de los votos (36,400). Mientras
San Antonio Police Department
Cervantes, Matt Ninam y Andy
Bexar.
Estuvieron a su lado durante
las horas del proceso electoral su
esposa, dos hijas de ambos, sus
padres y hermanos.
Javier Salazar es hijo de Plácido
Salazar, uno de los conductores
de radio de mayor popularidad
en San Antonio (ahora retirado).

José Menéndez is reelected for state senator

Crowds cheered and tacos were
passed out as the announcement of
State Senator José Menéndez (D26) was re-elected after facing off
with long-time supporter, former
State Representative Trey Martinez
Fischer (D-116).
Although they were rivals during this election, they have been
allies when they came together as
Democratic freshman classmates in
the Texas house back in 2000. Many
of their principles came together as
both agreed on the topics of creating
funds for public education, increase
minimum wage and to expand Medicaid eligibility.
For Martinez Fischer, it was to
work out a budget compromise with
the Senate back in 2013, that he was
able to secure nearly $4 billion more
for public education to be sealed.
Menéndez has worked towards a
vision to give teachers a higher salary
and as the state senator for District
26, he accomplished to file a Senate
Bill 1303 to give a pay raise to every
public school teacher in the state. He
also has a plan to create an education
system that puts less emphasis on

by cutting down tests for elementary
and middle school students.
“The results are great, the margin
of victory was larger than what I
expected, but it is a testament of the
hard work we have been doing for
the last 12 months,” Menéndez told
La Prensa.
Over 50,000 votes were casts for
the state senatorial seat and from the
outset, the incumbent Menéndez
seemed to enjoy the lead. With over
90 percent of precincts reporting,
the senator held a commanding 59
percent to 40 percent lead over the
freshman challenger.
In a turnout that was indicative of
past elections in San Antonio, both
candidates campaigned up until the
last minute. For Menéndez, this was a
victory in which he could continue to
do good for the city of San Antonio.
“I continue to work hard on my
constituents. I fight for my veterans,
I fight for my senior citizens, I fight
for public education, we work so
hard every single day to make a
difference, to make a positive out
come to the community and that is
what we do,” expressed Menéndez.
“At the last session, we produce 40
bills and the governor vetoed two of
them. We plan to do more work like
that and bring more money home to
help our community like what we
did for Alamo colleges, UTSA and
Texas A&M this year.”

JULIE SPEED: UNDERTOAD— Ruiz-Healy Art is pleased to
present Julie Speed: Undertoad, an exhibition of paintings, prints and
collages spanning two cities. Utilizing her keen sense of the absurd,
Speed ponders the big questions—the role of religion, isolation and
longing—with a sly, sometimes dark sense of humor and a steadfast
refusal to offer the viewer any tidy resolutions. It is the emphatically
open-ended and omnivorous nature of her work that puts Speed in the
vanguard of a return to figurative painting in contemporary art. The
exhibition will be on display until Saturday, March 19 at Ruiz-Healy
Art, 201-A E. Olmos Dr.
FUNKY FIRST FRIDAY— The Urban Farm Stand, White Elephant
Coffee, Organic Movement and Zollie Glass join to host a familyfriendly, healthy addition to Southtown’s “First Friday.” Taste fresh

Julieta Venegas shines through the Aztec Theatre
By Christina Acosta
[email protected]
Julieta Venegas is one of the
greatest Latin American singers that many do not recognize.
However, that changes once an
individual goes to her concert.
Last Thursday, Julieta stopped
by at the historical Aztec Theatre
as one of her tour stops to promote
her album, “Algo Sucede,” which
debuted in August of last year.
Although she was one hour late
to her own performance, crowds
anticipated for what Venegas had
in store for them.
Many took advantage of the
hour wait until her performance
by visiting the nearest voting booth
during election season. Recently,
the Grammy award-winning artist
launched Live Nation and Voto
Latino’s initiative for her “Algo
Sucede” tour to allow the Latino
vote to count.
Many fans even reflected about
how Venegas has come into her
own as a chameleon, but staying
true to her roots. In her new album,
she has gone through a progression of emotions using her artistic
capabilities to experiment how far
she can go from her comfort level
to keep fans coming back.
When she walked on stage with
a bohemian robe on, she quickly
got her guitar and started to sing
“Esperaba.” As the crowd cheered,
Venegas brought onto the stage a
boldness knowing that the show
must go on without distraction.
The calm yet vibrant Venegas
bobbed from one end to the other,
swapping acoustic guitar for accordion, and began to tell stories
about her journey as an artist to
her fans.
One of the best songs she has
performed from her set list was
“Te Vi,” which was played at the
beginning of her concert.
With “Te Vi” in particular,
Venegas lit up the stage with a “Sin Documentos,” something fans glued to the stage as they were

During his 20 minute speech,
he encouraged supporters to
vote on Super Tuesday and told
them why he believes his wife
is the best candidate to make
“America whole again.”
“The reason Hillary should
be president is she wants us to
all rise together,” he said. “For
45 years, I have watched her
(Hillary) make everything she
every touched and every person
she ever met better, in and out
of government,” Clinton said.
The former president reiterated his wife’s policies of job
creation, decreasing college
debt and supporting the dreamers while also taking the opportunity to criticize Republican
frontrunner Donald Trump’s
policies.
“So they say all we need to
do is build a lot of walls,” said
Clinton, referencing Trump’s
call to build a wall on the United States border with Mexico.
“She thinks this election is
about taking down barriers
and building ladders we can
all climb.”

¿Viajando para Spring Break? No se queme con ofertas de viajes
BBB. Con Spring Break en solo
unas pocas semanas, ahora es el
tiempo de finalizar esos planes de
vacaciones. Si su destino promete
relajación en una playa o esquiar
en las montañas, Better Business
Bureau le aconseja que investigue
antes de reservar sus próximas
vacaciones.
Una agencia de viajes puede
hacer el proceso de reservar sus
vacaciones fácil y rápido. Pero
usand o la agencia equivocada
puede cambiar su sueño a una
pesadilla.
negocio confiable:
• Use una compañía de confian
za. Pregunte a familia y amigos
sobre compañías que recomiendan
y visite bbb.org para encontrar una
compañía acreditada con BBB y
ver su evaluación de negocio.
• Consiga todo los detalles por
escrito.
U.S. Travel
Insurance Association mantiene
una lista de compañías de seguros
con licencia. Ciertas compañías de
viaje tienen diferentes pólizas y
niveles de cobertura. Haga preguntas y siempre lea la letra pequeña.
• Pague con tarjeta de crédito.
Pagando con una tarjeta de crédito
– en vez de cheque o efectivo – le
da protección adicional si algo
pasa con su reservación.
• Verifique reservaciones. Consiga la información de contacto
para la aerolínea, agencia de renta
de carro y hotel. Llame para confirmar todos los arreglos.
• Pregunte sobre “cargos de
hospedaje” exigidos. Los hoteles
muchas veces tienen cargos de
hotel o hospedaje, usualmente
por servicios como Internet, ins
talaciones de ejercicio y acceso a
la alberca. Los cargos adicionales
pueden cambiar el costo por noche,
y son requeridos, aunque no use los
servicios. Antes de finalizar una
reservación en línea, llame al hotel
y pregunte si los cargos de hotel
están incluidos en su costo total.
• Manténgase alerta a las estafas
de viajes. Correo no solicitado,

Por José I. Franco
[email protected]
104-94.
Durante la gira, en algunos
partidos Spurs no contaron con
la participación del alero estelar
Kawhi Leonard, quien estuvo
en recuperación de lesión en la
pantorrilla derecha, por igual el
capitán Tim Duncan, quien estuvo
resentido de la rodilla izquierda.
Ambos se unieron al equipo en la
final del recorrido, por lo que se
dieron a la tarea de realizar labor
defensiva y ofensiva.
campeón Warriors de Golden State
con marca de 52 victorias por 5
derrotas, a 3.5 juegos de distancia
de San Antonio.
Para lograr que Spurs llegará a
su marca de 50 triunfos, Popovich
tuvo que emplear a fondo y darle
confianza a sus titulares LaMarcus Aldridge, Kawhi Leonard,
Danny Green, Tony Parker y Tim
Duncan, quienes respondieron a la
ofensiva y defensiva.
Kareem Abdul-Jabar (3,189),
Dikembe Mutombo (3,289), y
Hakeem Olajwon (3,830).
Este miércoles 2 de marzo, los
Spurs reanudarán sus partidos en
el renovado AT&T Center cuando
a las 7 p.m. enfrente al equipo
visitante Pistons de Detroit.
