Ray Smith se dio a conocer internacionalmente a finales de los ochenta, en un contexto en el
que no fue difícil relacionarle con el expresionismo, especialmente en su vertiente picassiana. Se
comenzó a discutir sobre multiculturalidad y a elaborar discursos sobre el llamado arte del
tercer mundo. Esto no le impide, en cualquier caso, haber sido capaz de pintar una importante
alegoría de la historia de México.
Desde su traslado a la ciudad de Nueva York en 1983 el artista México-americano ha realizado
un ingente catálogo de obras: Alrededor de 600 pinturas figurativas, muchas de ellas a escala
monumental, además de numerosos dibujos, esculturas, tapices y fotografías. Esta producción
es prodigiosa no solo en términos cuantitativos, sino también por su repertorio de imágenes.
Smith representa a conocidos parientes, personalidades históricas, criaturas mitológicas,
animales, embellecimientos caligráficos y paisajes estilizados; todo ello combinando fuentes
primitivas con referencias culturales pop de gran modernidad.
