“Busy is boring”
Dear Friends,
When was the last time you sat silently in
the presence of the Lord? If you’re reading
this bulletin, it’s likely that you came to Mass
this weekend. I applaud that. The Eucharist
strengthens and sustains us. It provides food
for the journey of our life. That being said, it’s
55 minutes of a week filled with many more
minutes. Our schedules don’t allow much
more than that. Unless...
Our schedules don’t allow much more than that, unless
we commit to making it happen. Our schedules prevent
opportunities for silent reflection. I’ve said it before. From
toddler age to old age, we’re over programmed. We value
busyness. Guilty of it myself, I have challenged myself to spend
at least 30 minutes of quiet - in church, in my room, outdoors
- really anywhere to stop the rush and to listen to God. This
silent time with God brings direction, love, ideas, and most of
all mercy. In the end, I feel more energized, focused and happy.
God wants us close. In this Year of Mercy more than ever we
must accept that invitation. It means we have to reject the
high value placed on “doing” and relish our “being” children of a
loving God who waits patiently for us and draws us in when we
accept God’s invitation.
“If you are what you do, then when you don’t you’re not!”
This axiom, a complete counter to the workaholic pressures of
today’s society, reminds us that we indeed are more than what
we do. So often we get caught up in equating business with
worthiness. How many times when you ask the question, “How
are you?” to a friend, family member or colleague, do you hear
the response “Busy?” Martha was busy, and she wasn’t really
happy about it. I often say busy is boring!
Because we are busy, we think that we are more important,
more valued. Jesus tells Martha in today’s Gospel that he
doesn’t require her or us to be busy. He says that only one
thing is required. As Christians in today’s society, we need to
reject the temptation to fill our lives with frenetic action. The
one thing that is required is Jesus, and living according to his
example. That which is required demands that we take the time
from our everyday lives and connect with the Lord. When we
do, we will be happy.
The Martha and Mary story springs controversy, especially in
our society. Of course Martha and Mary needed to welcome
Jesus. Of course someone needed to attend to the details of
hospitality. Of course work needs to be done. But, we must
take the time to be truly present to those people in our lives that
God has given us to appreciate, to help and to love. We need to
find a balance. We need to allow a little of Martha and a lot of
Mary to enter our beings. We need to make changes, whether
we like it or not, whether it is popular or not. Because, if we are
what we do…
Twenty seven years ago, I was a seminarian working as a hospital
chaplain in Boston. The work was good; I ministered to patients
in the AIDS ward of the hospital. The hours were long and
sometimes I needed to be on call 48 hours at a time. It involved
a decent commute from the rectory to the hospital. I remember
feeling at the same time fulfilled and a bit empty. I had trouble
sleeping some nights. When someone asked me, “Are you
spending enough time with Jesus?” I was taken aback, even a
bit offended. The answer, upon honest reflection, was “no.” I
readjusted my schedule and remembered Cardinal Bernardin’s
story of his own prayer conversion, when he was Archbishop of
Cincinnati and a priest challenged him about his prayer life, and
I made a point to make sure I was spending enough time with
Jesus. I’ve not been perfect and I always need to remind myself
that busy is boring. I’m convinced, though, that time with the
Lord each day brings sustained joy.
Summer provides a perfect opportunity to relax and rest and
reflect on the goodness of God and our relationship with God.
Mary took the time to truly be in the presence of Jesus. She did
this, perhaps, so that she could take him into her heart and that
she could learn from him and bring him into the world. We
cannot be ambassadors for Christ if we do not know him. We
cannot know Christ if we are too busy for him. Spend some
extra time with the Lord this week.

How do we oppose the mercy of
God? Certainly, that happens when
we refuse to accept or share mercy.
More subtly and perhaps more
dangerously, it happens when we
resent the forgiveness and the second
chance that others receive. In doing
so, we align ourselves with death, not
new life. “But we had to celebrate and
rejoice, because this brother of yours
was dead and has come to life; he was
lost and has been found.” (Luke 15:32)
THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A CATHOLIC?
Is God calling you to a deeper relationship? Looking for
answers to questions you can’t quite name? Consider joining
our RCIA program. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
(RCIA) is for anyone 18 and older who would like to learn
more about the Catholic faith and for those who seek to be
baptized, receive First Holy Communion and be confirmed in
the Catholic Church. The RCIA can also help you complete the
necessary steps to become a member of the Catholic Church if
you were baptized in another Christian denomination. RCIA
meets on Thursday evenings, three times per month from
September to April. If you are interested in learning more, if
you know of anyone who might be a candidate for this journey,
or if you are willing to help as a catechist or sponsor, please
contact Shelagh Donoghue in the parish office.

MINISTRY OF CARE VISITS TO THE SICK AND
HOMEBOUND
Your spiritual needs are very important to the staff at St.
John Berchmans. Ministers of Care are available to bring
communion to parishioners who are unable to attend Mass
due to illness or infirmity. A communion visit includes time
to listen and pray, as well as sharing the Eucharist, with those
who are homebound, in nursing homes or in the hospital.
This ministry is provided by trained and certified lay people,
members of religious communities, and ordained deacons
and priests. To request a visit from a Minister of Care, for
yourself or a loved one, please call the parish office in the
rectory at 773-486-4300 and ask for Shelagh Donoghue.

que…
“Ocupado es aburrido”
La historia de Marta y María surge controversia, especialmente en
nuestra sociedad. Por supuesto Marta y María necesitaban dar la
bienvenida a Jesús. Por supuesto, alguien tenía que atender los detalles
de hospitalidad. Incluso, hacer el trabajo. Sin embargo, debemos tomar
el tiempo para estar realmente presentes con las personas en nuestras
vidas que Dios nos ha dado para apreciar, ayudar y amar. Tenemos que
encontrar un equilibrio. Tenemos que permitir que un poco de Marta
y una gran cantidad de María entre en nuestros seres. Tenemos que
cambiar, nos guste o no, si es popular o no. Porque, si somos lo que
hacemos ...
¿Cuándo fue la última vez que se sentó en silencio en
la presencia del Señor? Si está leyendo este boletín,
lo más probable es que haya venido a misa este fin de
semana. Lo felicito. La Eucaristía nos fortalece y nos
sostiene. Nos proporciona alimento para la jornada
de nuestra vida. Dicho esto, son 55 minutos de una
semana llena de muchos más minutos. Nuestros
horarios no permiten mucho más que eso a menos
Hace veintisiete años, yo era seminarista trabajando como capellán de
un hospital en Boston. El trabajo era bueno; Ministrando a los pacientes
en la sala de SIDA del hospital. Las horas eran largas ya veces tenía que
estar de guardia 48 horas a la vez. Me tomaba algún tiempo viajando
de la rectoría al hospital. Recuerdo que tenia una sensación satisfactoria
y poca vacía al mismo tiempo. Tenía problemas para dormir algunas
noches. Cuando alguien un día me preguntó: “¿Está pasando suficiente
tiempo con Jesús?” La pregunta me sorprendió, incluso me sentí un
poco ofendido. La respuesta, después de una honesta reflexión, fue “no”.
Organicé mi horario y recordé la historia de Cardenal Bernardin de su
propia conversión a la oración, cuando él era Arzobispo de Cincinnati
y un cura lo desafió acerca de su vida de oración, hice el punto de
asegurarme de que yo pasaba suficiente tiempo con Jesús. No he sido
perfecto y siempre necesito recordarme que estar ocupado es aburrido.
Estoy convencido, sin embargo, que el tiempo con el Señor cada día trae
alegría sustentada.
Nuestros horarios no permiten mucho más que eso, a menos que nos
comprometamos a hacer que suceda. Nuestros horarios nos impiden
oportunidades de reflexión silenciosas. Lo he dicho antes. Desde la
infancia hasta la vejez, estamos programados. Valoramos el ajetreo. Yo
mismo soy culpable, me he desafiado a pasar al menos 30 minutos en

cualquier lugar para detener el ajetreo y escuchar a Dios. Este tiempo de
silencio con Dios trae dirección, amor, ideas, y sobre todo misericordia.
Al final, me siento con más energía, centrado y feliz. Dios desea que nos
acerquemos. En este Año de la Misericordia más que nunca debemos
aceptar esa invitación. Significa que tenemos que rechazar el alto valor
atribuido a “hacer” y disfrutar de “ser” hijos de un Dios de amor que
espera pacientemente por nosotros y nos une cuando aceptamos la
invitación de Dios.
“Si uno es lo que hace, entonces cuando uno no lo hace no lo es!” Este
proverbio, una regla completa de las presiones de la adicción al trabajo
de la sociedad actual, nos recuerda que, efectivamente, somos más de
lo que hacemos. Muy a menudo nos vemos atrapados comparando
profesiones con valores dignos. ¿Cuántas veces, usted ha hecho la
pregunta: “¿Cómo está usted?” A un amigo, familiar o compañero de
trabajo, ¿oye la respuesta “Ocupado?” Marta estaba ocupada, y no estaba
muy feliz por eso. A menudo digo ocupado es aburrido!
El verano ofrece una oportunidad perfecta para relajarse, descansar y
reflexionar sobre la bondad de Dios y nuestra relación con Dios. María
tomó el tiempo para estar verdaderamente en la presencia de Jesús. Ella
hizo esto, tal vez, de modo que ella pudiera tenerlo en su corazón y
poder aprender de él y traerlo al mundo. No podemos ser embajadores
de Cristo si no lo conocemos. No podemos conocer a Cristo si estamos
demasiado ocupados para él. Pase algún tiempo con el Señor esta semana.
Porque estamos ocupados, creemos que somos más importantes, más
valorados. Jesús le dice a Marta en el Evangelio de hoy que el no requiere
de ella o de nosotros estar ocupados. Dice que sólo se requiere una
cosa. Como cristianos en la sociedad actual, tenemos que rechazar la
tentación de llenar nuestras vidas con acción frenética. Lo único que se
requiere es Jesús, y vivir según su ejemplo. Lo que se requiere demanda
que tomemos el tiempo de nuestra vida cotidiana y conectarnos con el
Señor. Cuando lo hacemos, seremos felices.

¿Cómo nos oponemos a la
misericordia de Dios? Ciertamente
sucede cuando nos negamos a
aceptar o compartir la misericordia.
De manera más sutil y quizás más
peligrosa, sucede cuando nos
molestan el perdón y las segundas
oportunidades que otros reciben.
Entonces nos alineamos con la
muerte y no con la vida nueva.
Había que hacer esta porque este
hermano tuyo estaba muerto y ha
revivido, se había perdido y ha sido
encontrado (Lucas 15:32).

Summer of Fun at SJB
Did you know: we have a garden!!
The gardens were planted by the 4th graders in the spring. Campers helped
pick some radishes, onions and cherry tomatoes. They washed the vegetables and
tied them in bundles and they will be available for people who come to the parish
food pantry.

Teachers and Subs Needed for Religious Education Program
July 10, 2016
The Religious Education program needs additional adults to
join our team of dedicated and faith-filled volunteer catechists.
Religious Education meets from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on most Saturdays from September through April. Please consider being a
substitute catechist if a weekly commitment is too much at this
time. We provide curriculum materials and training. Classes for
the 2016-2017 school year begin Saturday, Sept. 10.
Students who attended the PreCommunion or PreConfirmation classes during the 2015-2016 school year must register
again for the coming year so they will be able to make First
Holy Communion or Confirmation in 2017.
Registration forms are available on the parish website www.
stjohnberchmans.org or in the Rectory Office.

Se necesitan Maestros y Substitutos para el Programa de Educación Religiosa
El programa de Educación Religiosa necesita adultos adicionales para unirse a nuestro equipo de catequistas voluntarios dedicados y llenos de fe. El
programa de Educación Religiosa se reúne de 9 a 10:30 am en la mayoría
de los sábados desde septiembre hasta abril. Si un compromiso semanal es
demasiado en este momento, por favor considere ser catequista substituto.

Just a little financial update... With the Annual
Catholic Appeal rebate, we actually did end the
2016 fiscal year with no outstanding bills to the
Archdiocese. Thanks be to God! It would be good
though in the future to use that rebate for capital
projects. We can do that if we strive to meet our
budgeted collection goal each week. We are almost
there. Thanks.
