You have type 2 diabetes. And yes, it’s a big deal. But you know what? It’s also something you can deal with. And the American Diabetes Association is available to help. When people first find out that they have diabetes, it’s sometimes really scary, or sad, or even hard to believe and easy to ignore. After all, you probably don’t feel sick, or any different than you felt before you were told you have diabetes. And yet it is very important to take this disease seriously. Some people who learn they have diabetes worry that it means their life is over, or that they won’t be able to do everything they used to do. Neither of those things is true. What is true is that you need to change some things about your daily routine. Luckily, there’s a lot that you can do to keep yourself healthy. This article will share some information from www.diabetes.org to give you the first steps for taking control of your diabetes. What is Type 2 Diabetes? When you eat, your food is broken down into a sugar called glucose. Glucose gives your body the energy it needs to work. But to use glucose as energy, your body needs insulin. When you have type 2 diabetes, either your body does not make enough insulin or it doesn’t use it well. Sometimes with diet, exercise, and weight loss (if needed) type 2 diabetes can be controlled without medication, but this is only after you have consulted with your doctor and diabetic team. Since your body’s cells can’t use the glucose from your food as energy, the glucose stays in your blood, where it can cause serious problems. Balancing the food you eat with exercise and medicine (if prescribed) can keep your blood glucose in a healthy range. Many people with diabetes live long and healthful lives. QQ What Does “Healthy Eating” Really Mean? QQ Eating a variety of foods, including vegetables, whole grains, fruits, non-fat dairy foods, healthy fats, and lean meats or meat substitutes. continued on page 4 www.mhpaz.com El comer una variedad de alimentos, incluyendo vegetales, granos enteros, frutas, productos lácteos sin grasa, grasas saludables, carnes bajas en grasa, o substitutos de la carne continua en la página 5 Maricopa Health Plan 3 Living with Diabetes QQ QQ QQ continued from page 3 Trying not to eat too much food, or of one type of food. Spacing your meals evenly throughout the day. Not skipping meals. Physical Activity Being active is another part of living healthy and managing diabetes. Any type of physical activity you do helps lower your blood glucose. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about which activities are right for you. Examples of different types of physical activity include: QQ QQ QQ QQ Aerobic activity (walking, biking, swimming) Being active throughout the day (taking the stairs instead of an elevator) Strength training (lifting weights or using resistance bands) Flexibility exercises (stretching and yoga) If you haven’t been very active recently, you can start out with 5 or 10 minutes a day and work up to more time each week. There are many ways to be more active during your day. These can help you burn calories and lower your blood glucose. Here are some examples: QQ QQ QQ QQ Walk instead of drive Get off the bus a stop early and walk the rest of the way Walk around while talking on the phone Park at the far end of the lot and walk Your doctor or diabetes care team may suggest you try to lose some weight. Losing weight can improve your blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol. You don’t have to lose a lot of weight to start seeing results. Just losing 10-15 pounds can make a difference. Starting New Medicines If you are starting new medicines, ask your doctor, pharmacist or diabetes educator the following questions: QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ How many pills do I take? How often should I take them, and when? Should I take my medicine on an empty stomach or with food? What if I forget to take my medicine and remember later? What side effects could I have? What should I do if I have side effects? Will my diabetes medicine cause a problem with any of my other medicines? If you think you are having side effects from your medicine, or have questions, call your doctor or pharmacist. Don’t stop taking it unless the doctor tells you to. Remember, your medicine will work best if you also make healthy changes to how you eat and if you are active. 4 Maricopa Health Plan Talk It Out Finding out that you have diabetes is a big deal. It’s a great idea to talk to family, friends, or your doctor about how you’re feeling. You can help them by telling them what you need from them. Try some of these ideas: QQ QQ QQ Ask them to learn about how diabetes affects your body and emotions. Invite them to attend your appointments or diabetes classes. Ask for help when you need it. You want the people around you to know how to help, but it’s also okay to tell them if you don’t want their help. We’re Here for You! Yes, there’s a lot to learn about living well with diabetes. Q:You’ve probably heard about fraud before, but what exactly is it? A: Fraud is when someone lies or gives the wrong information on purpose, in order to get benefits they wouldn’t normally receive. Q:Who would commit fraud? A: Most people don’t, but a few people do. Some people receiving AHCCCS benefits think they can “trick the system”. Even a few doctors, nurses and hospitals that get paid by AHCCCS may try to get more money than they deserve. The person could face jail time, probation, community service, fines, and may even have to pay back the cost of any medical services received because the person was not really eligible to get the benefits. Q:What can I do to help? A: If you suspect that a person, doctor, or company has committed fraud, please report it. It’s the law! You may not have all the information or be able to get all of the information, but it’s ok to report what you have. Include documents, statements, pictures, etc. It is always better to report partial information than not to report at all. Remember, you don’t have to convince anyone of your suspicions. Simply get as much information as you can and report the facts. If you are concerned about reporting fraud, don’t worry. State law says in part, that if a person makes an honest report, without taking part in the fraud, then he or she will be safe from any penalty. Q:How do I report fraud? A: There are a few ways you can report fraud. Call our Customer Care Center at 1-800-582-8686 Contact AHCCCS – you can report fraud by telephone by calling 602-417-4193 in Maricopa County, and 1-888-ITS-NOT-OK (888-487-6686) outside Maricopa County. HIV causes AIDS. AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Almost all people who have HIV go on to develop AIDS. People who have AIDS cannot fight off diseases. They usually get serious infections, certain cancers, and other lifethreatening diseases. In the United States, HIV is most often spread by: n Having unprotected sex with an infected person n Coming into contact with infected blood n Sharing needles Many people who are infected with HIV do not have symptoms at first. Early signs of HIV infection are: n n n n Fever Headache Tiredness Enlarged lymph nodes (glands in the neck and groin) Health care providers diagnose HIV infection with a blood test. Each year about 6,000 women living with HIV give birth. Many do not know they have the virus. An infected woman can pass the virus to her baby during pregnancy, delivery or breastfeeding. Drugs can dramatically decrease the risk that a mother will transmit or pass on the disease to her baby at the time of birth. What you can do Ask your health care provider to screen you for HIV before you’re pregnant or early in pregnancy. We urge all women who think they may have been exposed to HIV to get tested before they become pregnant. Ask your partner to be screened. While you’re pregnant, you can avoid HIV infection by not having sex and by not using needles that may be infected. If you do have sex: n Have sex with only one partner who is only having sex with you, has been tested for HIV, and is uninfected n Use a latex condom If you are infected with HIV or have AIDS, do not breastfeed your baby. Take a Stand at Home – Early and Often n Despite the impact of movies, music, and TV, parents can be the GREATEST INFLUENCE in their kids’ lives. n Talk directly to children about the risks of tobacco use; if friends or relatives died from tobacco-related illnesses, let your kids know. n If you use tobacco, you can still make a difference. Your best move, of course, is to try to quit. Meanwhile, don’t use tobacco in your children’s presence, don’t offer it to them, and don’t leave it where they can easily get it. 18 Maricopa Health Plan n Talk about the dangers of tobacco use at age 5 or 6 and continue through their high school years. Many kids start using tobacco by age 11, and many are addicted by age 14. n Know if your kids’ friends use tobacco. Talk about ways to refuse tobacco. n Tell your kids that tobacco on billboards and in other media, such as movies, TV, and magazines does not make it cool. Make a Difference in Your Community n Be sure your schools and all school events (i.e., parties, sporting events, etc.) are tobacco-free. n Partner with your local tobacco prevention programs.
