WELL-ROUNDED STUDENT
La misión de Newton College menciona que estamos “comprometidos
con el desarrollo del máximo potencial de nuestros alumnos para que se
conviertan en ciudadanos íntegros y exitosos”. Nuestra Head Girl de 2013
María Lucía Sánchez acaba de recibir una beca completa para estudiar
Economía en la exclusiva Universidad de Nueva York en Abu Dhabi (NYUAD)
y su testimonio confirma que estamos desarrollando estudiantes íntegros.
Newton College’s mission states that we are “committed to developing
the full potential of our pupils in order for them to become well-rounded
and successful citizens”. Our Head Girl of 2013 María Lucía Sánchez has
just received a full scholarship to study Economics at the exclusive New
York University of Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and her testimony confirms that
we are developing well-rounded students.
María Lucía relata su experiencia durante su postulación: “La dimensión
sobre quién es uno realmente se pone a prueba cuando acaba el colegio, al
encontrarnos en situaciones decisivas para la vida, como por ejemplo al postular
a una de las universidades más selectivas del mundo, compitiendo por un cupo
con los mejores alumnos de todos los continentes. Es ahí cuando ser alumno
del Newton se convierte en una gran ventaja pues pareciera
que los términos de la evaluación para ser admitido hubiesen
sido mimetizados con los valores de éste, mi querido colegio.
Digo aquello porque universidades como ésta, no sólo
exigen excelencia académica sino también demostrar que
uno ha desarrollado su espiritualidad a través de las artes,
el deporte, la música y especialmente la solidaridad con los
más necesitados, actividades que pude realizar durante mis
13 años en el Newton.”
María Lucía writes about her application experience: “The dimension of
who you really are is tested when school ends, as we find ourselves in
life’s critical situations, such as when applying for one of the most selective
universities in the world, competing for a spot with the best students
from all continents. That is when being a Newton student becomes a
great advantage because the terms of the evaluation
for admission seem to have been camouflaged with
the values of my beloved school. I say that because
universities like NYU require not only academic
excellence but also that one has developed spirituality
through the arts, sports, music and especially solidarity
with the needy, activities that I could do during my 13
years in Newton College.”
La filosofía del IB, con la que estamos totalmente
comprometidos, afirma que uno de sus objetivos es

ayuden a crear un mundo mejor y más pacífico a través
del entendimiento y el respeto intercultural”. En NYUAD
María Lucía estará en un escenario ideal. Sus profesores son

The IB philosophy, to which we are wholly committed,
states that one of its aims is “to develop inquiring,
knowledgeable and caring young people who help
to create a better and more peaceful world through
intercultural understanding and respect.” At NYUAD
María Lucía will be in an ideal setting. Her teachers
are all doctorates who emphasize investigation and
research skills. Her peers are from over 100 different
nationalities with a proven academic excellence, and
who are expected to obtain at least 41 points out of
a possible 45 in the IB Diploma (María Lucía obtained
43). Her course allows her to study in the 12 different
campuses around the world owned by NYU. Therefore, if she wanted to
follow a semester course on economic development, she could very easily
find herself studying in the Accra campus, in Ghana.
El consejo de María Lucía a nuestros alumnos es “aprovechen cada instante en
el Newton porque no hay mejor lugar y exploten todas las oportunidades que se
les presenten porque son ellas las que los irán formando”. Mientras estuvo en
Newton College, María Lucía fue miembro de la banda, orquesta, coro, equipo
de atletismo, equipo de fútbol y el club de trekking. Como parte de su servicio
a la comunidad, ella enseñaba inglés, matemáticas y música a niños de bajos
recursos. Obtuvo su certificado de Primeros Auxilios, era prefecto y representó al
Colegio en eventos internacionales en Argentina, México y Colombia.
María Lucía’s advice to our students is: “Seize every moment at Newton
because there is no better place and utilise every opportunity presented
to you because those will form you.” Whilst at Newton, María Lucía was
a member of the band, orchestra, choir, athletics team, football team
and trekking club. As part of her community service she taught English,
mathematics and music to children from impoverished backgrounds.
She obtained her First Aid Certificate, was a Prefect and represented the
school at international events in Argentina, Mexico and Colombia.

GRADUATION CEREMONY
TIME WAITS FOR NO-ONE
(The following is an excerpt of the Headmaster’s speech at the
graduation ceremony of Promotion XXVI. The full speech can be
found in English and Spanish on our school website.)
There is an old English proverb which says: “Time nor tide wait
for no man”. In other words, no-one can stop the march of time.
The problem is that the march of time now seems faster than ever
before. It is no longer a march but a whirlwind of frenzied change
and innovation. We feel insecure and so we cling to landmarks that
do not change and which give us a sense of permanency. Some of
these landmarks are our values.
How you spend each day is, of course, how you spend the rest of your
life. Prom XXVI, think about how you spend each day. Organizing our
time intelligently has become a major life-skill in the 21st century. We
have forgotten how important it is to take the time to think, read,
play, laugh, dream and give. Everything is urgent and rushed.
In one of my favourite films, “The Scent of a Woman”, a blind Al
Pacino asks a young girl to tango with him. She declines and excuses
herself by saying, “My boyfriend will be here in a few minutes.” To
this Al Pacino replies, “But it only takes a moment to live a life” and
he draws her on to the dance floor and teaches her how to tango.
As an IB school one of our major aims has been to foster a spirit
of international mindedness in you and this entails understanding
and appreciating your own culture and personal history whilst at
the same time being open to the perspectives, values and traditions
of other individuals and communities. It also means acting with
integrity and honesty at all times, demonstrating a strong sense of
fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of others. It demands
being caring, that is, showing empathy and compassion towards the
needs and feelings of others.
I can assure you that time will not change the importance of these
values. If anything, they will become even more important landmarks
in the future.
One of the greatest paradoxes of the 21st century is that
technology has speeded up so many aspects of our life, but it has
also converted time into one of our most precious commodities.
You belong to Generation Z and you cannot perceive life without
the Internet, Facebook and smartphones. We now have access to
more information and communication is faster but what have we
sacrificed in return for these benefits? Let me help you to ponder
on this question by paraphrasing a popular but anonymous poem:
So, Prom XXVI, let’s not chase time and suffer a heart attack or a car
accident in the process. As John Lennon said, “Life is what happens
to you while you’re busy making other plans.” Or, as the Scottish
people say in one of their wonderful proverbs: “Enjoy life while you
are alive, because you are a long time dead.”
Prom XXVI, don’t worry so much about the future. Just remember
to be principled, caring and open-minded and you will have a happy
and successful life.

XXVI.
Hoy es un día muy importante. Hace 11 años empezamos este viaje
y hoy termina. Los de toga verde entramos como alumnos y salimos
como graduados. Hoy cada quien se va por caminos separados a
perseguir sus sueños.
ÁLVARO YÁÑEZ | HEAD BOY
Well, this is it, Prom 26. We can finally say we have made it!
Tonight is the perfect occasion to remember the good times and
the bad times; the times of fighting and the times of union. Tonight
we begin a new chapter in our lives. Tonight we exit this theatre
with a ridiculously important piece of paper in our hands: Prom 26,
we are graduating! It is crazy to think that in a couple of hours, in
this same stage that saw us grow, we will see us depart into the
world: the unknown.
Who will ever forget the study trips or the prom trip to Punta Cana?
Remember thinking last year that it was never going to happen,
and we were going to go instead to some religious camp… in
Canada? We will always remember how unique an experience it
was, thanks to all of you. Y para los padres y madres de estas 80
increíbles personas, gracias por estar a nuestro lado estos 11 años,
gracias por cada aliento, cada lágrima.
Llegué en Kinder como muchos, y entonces éramos una promoción
muy diferente. Las clases tenían nombres de animalitos y podíamos
jugar encantados por horas. Ahora, somos grandes –o por lo menos
eso me dicen- pero no debemos dejar atrás las cosas buenas sólo
porque hemos crecido.
El retiro de Form III nos cambió como grupo. Tuvimos un momento
especial en que lloramos alrededor de la fogata, y nos abrazamos
y pedimos perdón por esos momentos en que no habíamos sido
buenos amigos. Quiero recordarles que hoy no somos IB o National,
somos la Prom XXVI.
Quiero dar gracias a las delegadas, por siempre esforzarse hasta
el último detalle. Al equipo de mantenimiento, seguridad y todo
el staff del colegio por hacer que nuestro tiempo acá haya sido
seguro y feliz. A nuestros padres, por apoyarnos y esperar horas en
el estacionamiento a que termine la práctica de básquet o fútbol.
Gracias a los profes por ser un modelo a seguir.
Gracias Mr. Quantrill por siempre recibirnos con una sonrisa y estar
ahí para solucionar cualquier problema. Imposible olvidarnos de
la dulces misses de primaria como Miss Cecilia, Rocío y Magali;
ustedes nos dieron una base sólida de valores. A los profesores que
nos han enseñado estructura como el conservador Mr. Collier, el
pensamiento matemático del profesor Munive y la organización de
Miss Paola, habilidades que nos ayudarán en la universidad. A los
profesores que nos hacen reír como Mr. Darren, o Mr. Halford con
sus súper héroes y Mr. Fergusson con la historia de la oveja. Al jefe
de año Mr. Yépez y a nuestras tutoras: Miss McGregor, Miss Bull,
Miss Remuzgo y Ms. Panayotova. Gracias por haber sido una parte
importante de mi vida y hacerme la persona que soy hoy. A donde
vaya, los llevaré conmigo.
Hoy les hablo con una mezcla de melancolía y felicidad. Estoy
nostálgica por todas las veces que hemos pasado por este escenario,
y saber que ésta será la última. Pero estoy feliz, por haber tenido
estos momentos y compartirlos con los mejores amigos que podría
haber pedido. Por eso dicen que los amigos del cole son para
siempre. Ellos son quienes te vieron convertirte en la persona que
serás por el resto de tu vida.
Hay momentos que son infinitos. Prom XXVI, este es uno de ellos.
Gracias por ser los mejores amigos.
I would also like to thank the teachers who set their print in this
prom, teaching us life-long lessons. To Mr. Quantrill, and his
always-warming smile and countless advice; to Mr. “Oye Chico”
Pantin and Mr. “Los hombres sólo se pegan cuando hay mujeres
cerca” Gorriti, to Miss Carmen, who stood beside the girls from
1st Grade, to Mr. “Go York” Sarria, who motivated us with his
always-overexcited self. To Miss Sarita, even though she is not here
anymore. To Mr. “Don’t be naughty” Abbott, whose lessons will
never be forgotten; to Mr. Roberto Gonzales, who helped us with
the prom song with dedication; to Mr. Fergusson, who loved us so
much he brought his father to meet us; to Mr. Eden, the soul of
the prom party; and to Mr. Yépez, who went to the lockers every
morning saying “Go back to your tutor rooms, please”, always
taking great care of us. I’m not forgetting all the other teachers –to
all of you, to each of you, thank you as well, because you helped
to shape ourselves to become what we are today, and what we
will be in the future.
It’s true that there were fights Prom 26, but there was never, EVER,
loneliness. Just look at your sides. What do you see? I see that
friend whom we always talked to, and played with. That friend
who stole a smile from you and knew what to say in times of
struggle. I see 80 people who love you unconditionally, in their
own special way, and will always be there for you.
Prom 26, you really ARE a world. If we became a little divided along
the way, because of the National/IB division, don’t forget this night,
don’t forget us, ¡olvidar es para los débiles! Always remember, the
spirit of the 26th Prom will endure no matter what. We will not
separate, we will just be momentarily away, conquering the world!
Enjoy this moment, for it is fast and slippery, but worth holding on
to. Thank you. For meaning the world.

del discurso de la ex alumna
Lorena Alarco, Prom XVIII,
durante el Speech Day and
Prize Giving Ceremony)
Es un placer dirigirme a
todos ustedes esta mañana.
Es muy bonito para mí
regresar al colegio a visitar.
En estas visitas me encanta
ver cómo han cambiado
las cosas, es un orgullo ver
cómo se va desarrollando la
infraestructura del colegio.
En mi época de primaria estas reuniones se organizaban
en el Auditorio Pelagatti, para que se imaginen como han
cambiado las cosas. Tuve la suerte de estar cuando se
inauguró el teatro en el que estamos hoy, pero aún este
mismo espacio ha cambiado tanto con los años!
Al mismo tiempo, es lindo ver cómo muchas de las cosas
que amábamos de nuestro colegio siguen siendo las
mismas. Todavía podemos encontrar a algunos de los
profesores que nos enseñaron; y también vemos cómo la
esencia del colegio no ha cambiado. Cuando venimos los
vemos a ustedes divirtiéndose durante los recreos, vemos
cómo en los salones se mantiene ese gran ambiente de
enseñanza y confianza entre profesores y alumnos, y
cómo se están creando vínculos de amistad que llevarán
consigo por muchos años.
Les recomiendo que participen en las actividades extra
curriculares que ofrece el colegio. Si sigue siendo algo
como en mi época, los chicos no querían participar en los
bailes y las chicas se escondían de los deportes, ¡cambien
eso! Las fotos que se tomarán en estos años usando
disfraces y haciendo otras actividades van a ser fotos que
no sólo serán apreciadas por sus padres sino también
serán una fuente de risas y bonitos recuerdos.
I have taken the liberty to give you some advice based
on my experience and, if you allow me, I would like to
continue along these lines but now refer to those of you in
the audience that will soon be moving on to Upper School.
The years to come will undoubtedly be influential not only
in your personal development but also in your academic
one. My advice to you is to study, and I don’t mean it in
the tedious sense of staying late at the library and being
a book worm, but to find a way to enjoy your studying.
You will have amazing teachers and great opportunities.
I recall almost perfectly many of the lessons I learnt when
we travelled to Huaraz to learn about rivers and rocks and
Peruvian history. I had an amazing time but I also learnt a lot.
I really loved my school years and was involved in all
sorts of extracurricular activities. I was part of the debate
team and represented Peru at various international
competitions. This allowed me to have a unique curriculum
and when it was time to apply to university, I was fairly
lucky to be accepted by University College London to
study Geography. Then, this university was ranked fourth
in the world and it remains in that position to this day.
I studied Geography because I had a teacher at Newton
named Mr. Pool who was one of my strongest influences
when I was younger. I went to London not only because
it is one of the most important cities in the world (in
my opinion, arguably the best place to go to university
and live, I recommend everyone to pay a visit), but also
because Newton is a British school so I was exposed to
many things from the UK and I felt comfortable studying
in such a large city so far away from home.
I would like to use my personal story to illustrate the point
that once you have the right tools, you can pretty much do
anything you like. I did the IB programme and concentrated
on humanities; I studied geography at university and then
went on to get a Master’s Degree in Public Policy. I came
back to Peru and worked in market research, a field not
related to my studies but which I found interesting and
rewarding, and during my time in the field I was offered
a job at one of our clients’ companies. I now work for an
import and distribution business as a Financial Controller.
What does this have to do with what I studied? Not much
to be honest, but I love my job, I love what I studied and I
am happy doing what I do because everything has added
value to my life and enhances what I have to offer.
Don’t stress too much about what you feel you are really
good at in school today or what you will do with your
life. You are currently learning all the things you need to
know in order to make those choices when you are older
and even if you have to change things around, you will be
able to do the things you need to do in order to be really
happy in life.
Muchas gracias por escucharme, ¡felicidades por
culminar otro año escolar y deseo que tengan las
mejores vacaciones!
PRIZE GIVING CEREMONY
UPPER SCHOOL
(This is an excerpt from the Prize Giving Ceremony speech by Mr.
Richard Quantrill, Head of Upper School)
Good morning ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, teachers and
parents and welcome to the Upper School Speech Day.
What a day….the last of this academic year, and a day on which
I would like us all to reflect a little on some of the key events
from this year in Upper School. Our school mission is that we are
“committed to developing the full potential of our pupils in order
for them to become well-rounded and successful citizens” so we
will look at some of the year’s activities, and try to think how this
could help you and us achieve the mission.
A well-rounded education would be, we believe, an education
that meets the intellectual, emotional/social, artistic, physical
and spiritual needs of each and every student. Starting with the
intellectual, this year we had several of our older IGCSE and IB
students involved in MUN conferences in which they developed
The school also had major success in Copa Newton and ADCA
championships due to both the commitment and determination of
the players and the very committed Physical Education Department.
Our students have been involved with students from other schools
developing teamwork and empathy skills in the science challenge –
supported by the Science Department- sharing cultures in InterCAS
in Colombia, participating whilst learning and having fun in the
French annual festival, or singing for peace during Peace Week.
All in all, an incredible year, well done to all those students moving
towards reaching their full potential and becoming more wellrounded. Next year, let us hope that even more students participate
in different activities the school provides, whilst excelling in their
studies. Thanks to all the teachers involved in supporting and
creating school activities and events, and everyone in the school
community can be very proud of your school, Newton College.
LOWER SCHOOL
(This is an excerpt from the Prize Giving Ceremony speech by Mr.
Geoffrey Brown, Head of Lower School)
skills of negotiation, learning to listen, empathy, respect and
compromise. They also learnt to speak confidently in public, which
also takes place in debates, such as the BSP debates we held this
year. To help those students that hold potential in a subject, Mr.
Riley and Mr. Fergusson launched the Most Able and Talented
(MAAT) programme in 2013. Thanks to them, a large number of
students gained first-hand experience in practical applications of
photographic portraits, creative science, multi-media journalism
and the trading game, amongst others.
In terms of meeting the emotional and social needs, we celebrate
together, as a school, key dates throughout the year, such as the
Semana del Idioma and World Environment Day, themes of global
importance. As well as this, students travel together around this
beautiful country of Peru, experiencing as a group the emotions
and senses of the jungle, high up in the mountains of Huaraz and
the beauty of Trujillo and Cuzco. Promotions are more united, they
deepen their knowledge and experience social situations different
to the norm.
Also, artistic needs are met and encouraged to develop. This year,
Eduardo Jara starred in the outstanding and deeply provocative
school play “Romper La Piel”, with an extensive cast of students.
Students such as Micaela Zorrilla acted superbly in the BSP One
Act Play Festival in September. We shared the joy of dance with
many other schools at the ADCA Dance Festival, our Art teachers
brought out the best in the students at the ADCA Art Festival,
the Music Department won prizes and the students performed
passionately at various Music Festivals. And it all culminated in the
fantastic Arts Evening in October.
This is the first year we have had the Upper School and the
Lower School/Kinder closing ceremonies apart. We now have the
opportunity to focus more fully on our 5th Grade students who
have finished their learning experiences in Lower School and are
moving on to Secondary School. During your time in Lower School,
you have looked at many important themes and not only know lots
of things about these themes but really understand the important
issues behind them. You have constantly made connections,
piecing together your ideas about the world. You have developed
many skills, learning how to do things by yourselves, finding and
choosing relevant information, working as part of a team, making
conclusions and presenting your ideas, to name but a few. You
were able to show us all just how well you have mastered all
these skills through your work for the 5th Grade Exhibition, where
you made your own projects and applied all your learning, at the
same time modelling successfully all the attributes of the learner
profile. This is indeed a great start, and I know you will continue
to develop even further your potential as learners in Upper School.
5th Graders, you are ready for Secondary School! I wish you every
success in your future years in the school.

CLASS FRIENDS
Este año se implementó en Upper School el Programa “Class
Friends” con el objetivo de fomentar la solidaridad, sensibilidad
y empatía entre alumnos, y así formar personas que sepan
escuchar y ayudar a los demás. El programa pasó por etapas de
selección, talleres de formación, difusión, aplicación, seguimiento,
orientación y una evaluación al final del proceso. Estos son los
comentarios finales de algunos alumnos que aceptaron ser un
Class Friend:
“Ser Class Friend me ayudó a abrirme hacia todos mis compañeros
de la promoción creando un ambiente más cómodo y amigable”.

enseñó que no importa qué tan pequeño seas, siempre puedes
ayudar y hacer una gran diferencia en la vida de los otros”.

compañeros de clase y poder ayudarlos. Esta experiencia me

Ser un Class Friend ha sido una buena experiencia de crecimiento
para los alumnos, quienes se esforzaron por comprender,
escuchar y ayudar a otros en la medida de sus posibilidades.
¡Gracias a todos los alumnos que aceptaron este gran reto!
PROYECTO CHILCA
“La Literatura sirve para hacernos más buenos”
Una importante meta académica en Newton College es que
los profesores, sumando esfuerzos a través de los diversos
cursos, logren que los alumnos construyan en forma progresiva
y consistente el perfil de la comunidad de aprendizaje del IB.
Siguiendo esta línea, el Departamento de Español creó el
Proyecto Chilca, donde los alumnos de 6to Grado pusieron en
evidencia su capacidad de creatividad, acción y servicio (C.A.S)
apoyando a la comunidad de San José de Chilca, 5ta Etapa.
Dentro del plan de estudio de la Unidad de Lírica, previa
investigación sobre poetas peruanos e internacionales, los
alumnos asumieron el reto de crear sus propios poemas. Luego,
bajo la premisa que la Literatura –como dice Gabriel García
Márquez– “sirve para hacernos más buenos” editaron sus
creaciones, en conjunto con los Departamentos de ICT y Arte,
y con las donaciones recaudadas por éstos, compraron árboles
frutales para dotar de aire puro a la zona, que aledaña a una
fábrica industrial, sufre una fuerte contaminación ambiental.
Del mismo modo, al constatar que los niños del lugar no
tenían puerta ni ventana en su local del Vaso de Leche y debían
sufrir las inclemencias del clima, costearon la habilitación de
éstas. Finalmente, hicieron una campaña de donación de
libros y financiaron la pintura del mobiliario necesario para la
implementación de una biblioteca para la comunidad, apoyando
con ello la promoción de la lectura.
CONVIVENCIA ESCOLAR DEMOCRÁTICA
Para mantener un ambiente de armonía, democracia y
solidaridad, debemos promover la convivencia democrática.
Esto nos ayuda a fortalecer nuestra identidad y sentido de
pertenencia, y contribuye a que nuestros estudiantes asuman
de un modo crítico derechos y responsabilidades, aprendiendo
también a ejercerlos. La convivencia en democracia tiene
como objetivo fortalecer una cultura de paz, a través de la
solución pacífica de conflictos.
El perfil de la comunidad de aprendizaje zdel IB permite a nuestros
alumnos adquirir hábitos que los convertirán en personas capaces
de participar en la vida pública de modo responsable y solidario.
Por otro lado permite a todos los miembros de nuestra comunidad
mantener relaciones interpersonales positivas, basadas en el respeto.
Bajo esta línea, durante el año 2013 se dio énfasis al tema del
Bullying, y se llevaron a cabo talleres para todo el staff (profesores,
administración, entrenadores, choferes de las movilidades,
personal de mantenimiento, vigilancia, kiosco) en los cuales se
explicó el concepto, cómo se debe proceder cuando se detecta
un caso y qué acciones debemos tomar al respecto.

THINKERS
DESIGNING A CANDY CARTON
In the fourth term, 6th Grade students learned Nets and Symmetry
and, with Christmas around the corner, the Maths Department
created a project named “Designing a Candy Carton”. The main
focus was to invigorate the IB learner profile attributes amongst
the students. This Mathematical project was in accordance with
the constructivist teaching strategy which fosters critical thinking,
and creates motivated and independent learners.
Most groups came up with innovative designs of the candy
carton with a neatly drawn Net for the design. Some of the
groups were successful in designing the accurate size carton for
the given number of candies taking the exact surface area into
consideration. The whole class enjoyed thoroughly the activity.

FORM V - POLITICAL CAMPAIGN
As part of the IB Language and Literature, students must
study the use of the English language in different contexts,
from the origins of English to the language of politics.
Students worked independently and cooperatively to explore
new ideas and innovative strategies, and were resourceful
and resilient in the face of challenges.
The English Department created contexts that represent real
life. Hence, after studying the language of politics, politics
in the U.K., and analyzing how language is manipulated
to create political affiliations, we ran a political campaign.
The task was to think of Newton as the world state; the
students as the citizens: the goal was to be elected as
Supreme Student Leader, hence create a political campaign
for your leadership candidate. The Supreme Student Leader
will be in charge of every decision henceforth that affects
students at Newton.
Each group wrote their own manifesto, then scripted, filmed
and edited their Party Political Broadcast, promoted their
candidate with a series of campaign posters and slogan, and
finally were involved in a heated debate where each party
attacked the flaws in their rival’s manifestos.
As a conclusion to the unit, in September, Form V students
had an audience with Mr. Alex Fergusson, member of the
Scottish Parliament and former Presiding Officer, who shared
his thoughts on politics in the UK, the role that media plays in
shaping public opinion, and answered the students’ questions
on life in politics.
BSP SHORT STORY COMPETITION 2013
Once again, four Newton students participated in this
year’s British Schools of Peru (BSP) Short Story Competition,
held at Cambridge College in Villa. This contest is divided
into two levels: Lower Secondary (Forms I to III) and Upper
Secondary (Forms IV and V). Contestants are expected
to develop a complete story in two hours, based on one
of three titles for each category, without any previous
preparation for these themes. This year Newton was
represented by Andrea Ugarte and Caroline Adamy in
Lower Secondary, with Upper Secondary represented by
Jake Wang and Danithza Del Pino. The competition
was very hard fought, and although Newton did not win
any prizes this time, the results were, according to the
organizing school, very close.
INQUIRERS
They nurture their curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research.
USING ENERGY
As part of the Unit of Inquiry “Using Energy”, our 4th Grade
students investigated about the different sources of energy
which people use for their own benefit.
In order to answer questions as What kind of energy do we use
and how is this energy made available for us? What are the
effects of non-renewable energy on the environment? What are
the advantages and disadvantages of using different sources of
energy?, the students did electricity projects with models, talked
about wind energy, solar energy, and hydroelectric, among others,
and later showed the experimental models they created.
At the end, they had a better understanding of different sources
of energy and their uses, the advantages and disadvantages of
renewable and non-renewable energy sources, and of course the
responsible use of energy.
COLOUR AND SOUND
Our 2nd Grade students this year ended their colour unit
with plenty of festivities. Our investigation about colour
guided children into learning about various holidays and
the colours that represent them. One major holiday we
studied was Holi from India, where friends, families and
even enemies join together in throwing coloured powder at
each other and dance. The celebration announces the arrival
of Spring and reminds everyone of the beauty found in the
colours of the new season.
PROCESSES AND MARKETS
Our 3rd Grade students celebrated the end of year with a Christmas
Fair. This event is connected to their final unit of inquiry in which they
learn about how raw materials are transformed into products and
then marketed.
Whilst the students enjoyed the activity, a tremendous amount of
learning also took place. Students used skills and understandings
developed throughout the year in Spanish, English, maths and the
units of inquiry. They learned about the process of manufacturing
goods by actually planning and carrying out the process themselves,
and developed their creative skills by designing products and adverts.
Also, by working in small groups to make the products, they improved
their teamwork skills. Parents also contributed to the success of this
event by helping students to make cakes, cookies and other delicious
snacks and items for the students to sell.
All money collected was donated to the project “Construyendo
Sueños” in Pamplona. With the money, the community plans to build
a court for children to play sports and to provide an evacuation zone
in the case of an earthquake. Thanks to all who made the Christmas
Fair such a huge success.
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
As part of the unit of inquiry “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, our
1st Grade students learnt that some natural resources can
be used again and again, but others cannot. They visited
the kitchen where their lunches are fixed and observed how
much food is wasted. After this, they questioned what is
causing trash, and also reflected on their responsibility and
further action they can take. They made a commitment to
eat all of their lunches now so that they can help reduce the
amount of trash and food waste.

UOI - PRE-KINDER
As provocation to their Unit of Inquiry on “Houses”, the PreKinder children had a very hands-on experience at La Huaca
Pucllana in Miraflores. They had the chance to make adobe
bricks then, working collaboratively with their friends, they built
a house with the bricks. This experience helped the children to
think about how there are different types of houses.
UOI - KINDER
In their final Unit of Inquiry of the year, Kindergarten students
investigated the idea that different animals have needs and
require specific types of care. They had an amazing visit
to Granja El Arriero in Pachacamac, where they had the
opportunity to see many different animals and to feed them.
Some of our risk-takers also had a go at milking a cow!
UOI - NIVEL I
En la última Unidad de Indagación de Nivel I, “Los Servidores
de la Comunidad”, nuestros alumnos más pequeños recibieron
la agradable visita de diferentes trabajadores, quienes nos
dieron a conocer más de cerca las labores que realizan e
hicieron partícipes a los niños de las funciones que cada uno
cumple para contribuir con nuestra comunidad.
UOI - NIVEL II
During their final Unit of Inquiry, “Entertainment”, the Level II
students had the opportunity to participate in a mini-festival.
They got to watch and enjoy various activities that people do to
entertain themselves. Their fun day included jumping castles, a
popcorn stall, competitive games and face-painting. Not only did
they have a fantastic day but the festival helped to reinforce the
central idea that there are many ways in which people can enjoy
themselves and have fun.

NEWTON HOUSES IN 2013
2013 saw an exciting series of House events in Upper and Lower
School. There were high levels of commitment and competitive
spirit and also a lot of participation and fun.
An interesting area of development is in the number of nonsporting events that took place in Upper School. Due to the
competitive nature of the House System the majority of points are
awarded in sports events, but this year there were competitions
in chess, scavenge (hunting for answers), computer games, video
production, debates, science, Christmas tree decoration, murals
and a stage quiz between teams. The overall results were:

Congratulations to Tudor for winning in Upper School and to
York for winning in Lower School. The Overall House Shield

This year saw the retirement of two House masters in Upper
School: Henry Sarria (York) and Roberto Sanchez Pierola (Tudor),
so our gratitude goes to them for their sterling work over the
years. Arturo Espinola has been appointed in charge of York and
we await the appointment of a Tudor teacher.
CAMPEONATO DE ATLETISMO ADCA
Entre los meses de setiembre y octubre nuestro colegio participó
en el Campeonato ADCA de Atletismo. Las competencias para
las categorías mayores y juveniles se llevaron a cabo en el
Estadio Luis Gálvez Chipoco de Barranco y las de medianos y
menores en la Villa Deportiva Regional del Callao.
Nuestros alumnos lograron magníficos resultados, obteniendo
el primer lugar general en la categoría Medianos Varones;
segundo lugar general en las categorías Juveniles Damas,
Juveniles Varones y Mayores Varones y tercer lugar general en
la categoría Menores Damas. En el conteo total de medallas,
el resultado fue el siguiente:

Representando a Newton College, nuestra alumna Arena
Rodríguez de 2do Grado participó a principios del mes
de diciembre en el Roxy San Silvestre Championship 2013
llevado a cabo en la Playa Barranquito.
A pesar de tener sólo 8 años de edad y haberse iniciado
en este deporte hace menos de un año, Arena compitió
en la categoría Sub 12 Avanzados y luego de dos series de
clasificación, obtuvo el primer puesto. Éste fue el primer
campeonato oficial para ella, pero ya se está preparando
para participar en el Circuito Nacional IPD 2014 en la
categoría damas sub 12 y también en las cuatro fechas
del Intercolegios Copa BOZ en la categoría damas sub 10
y sub 12. ¡Felicitaciones Arena!
CAMPEONES DE FÚTBOL JUVENILES
En el mes de setiembre, y tras disputarse un reñido
campeonato de principio a fin, nuestro equipo de fútbol
categoría juvenil se alzó con el título de Campeón de Fútbol
ADCA 2013. El encuentro final frente al Colegio Antonio
Raimondi se realizó en nuestro campo deportivo, con un
resultado final de 2 a 1. Fue un encuentro vibrante pues
nuestro equipo logró remontar un marcador adverso en los
últimos 15 minutos del partido, frente a una tribuna llena de
padres de familia y alumnos que no cesaron de alentarlos.

CAMPEÓN DE TIRO
En Newton College celebramos también los triunfos de
nuestros ex alumnos. En esta oportunidad, con orgullo
felicitamos al tirador nacional Nicolás Pacheco, alumno
de la promoción XXIV, quien obtuvo la medalla de oro en
la modalidad de skeet en los Juegos Bolivarianos 2013
realizados en la ciudad de Trujillo en el mes de noviembre.
Además, este destacado deportista nacional de tan sólo
19 años de edad, se coronó recientemente campeón
mundial juvenil de fosa olímpica en el Campeonato
Mundial de Tiro en Lima, luego de la experiencia ganada
con su participación en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres
2012. ¡Felicitaciones a Nicolás por los importantes logros
deportivos conseguidos en 2013!

RECYCLING DOORWAY - A YEAR IN REVIEW
This year the Newton Recycling Doorway made a huge impact in
our community. Students, teachers, parents and staff collected
paper, plastic bottles, juice/milk boxes, bottle caps, batteries and
glass bottles for different social projects.
In September, we sent our plastic bottles to Gexim to convert
them into pencil cases. The bottle collection was a joint effort
with the students from the CAS Manchay programme, and those
students who participated each received their own recycled
pencil case as a reminder of what they had learnt about recycling.
After this project, the bottles collected through December were
donated to Aniquem to help their programme for children burn
victims.
Newton College received an honorable mention from Fundades
for our efforts in recycling this year. We are proud of our school
community and the habits they have developed to make an
impact through the recycling doorway. In the upcoming year,
we look forward to continue making progress towards more
sustainable living.
The bottle caps collected were sent to Tierra y Ser, a programme
that helps donate wheelchairs to children in need. Fundades
received paper, cardboard and glass bottles to implement school
improvement programmes throughout Peru. The funds allowed
them to donate materials and assist in the construction of schools
in extremely poor districts.
MÚSICA - VIAJE A IQUITOS

una tarde de juegos musicales con los violinistas de Iquitos.
Esta última actividad sensibilizó a los padres de familia, quienes
decidieron organizarse para ayudar permanentemente a los
alumnos de violín más talentosos y con mayores necesidades
de esa ciudad. Su primera actividad fue la organización de
un concierto navideño para recaudar fondos para esta causa.
Nuestro alumno Edgar Palomino, comparte su reflexión
sobre el viaje:
El conjunto de violines y chelos de Lower School, junto a sus
profesoras Natasha Encinas e Inkeri Petrozzi, viajaron a la
ciudad de Iquitos en el mes de noviembre para participar en
calidad de invitados especiales en el Concurso Nueva Acrópolis
en dicha ciudad. Los alumnos interpretaron un repertorio
amplio y variado, demostrando una alta calidad interpretativa.
Tanto los alumnos como sus padres pudieron apreciar a otros
MÚSICA - CONCIERTO DE NAVIDAD
Organizado por un grupo de madres de familia, el día 9 de
diciembre los alumnos de Kinder a 5to Grado de Lower School
ofrecieron un concierto navideño de solidaridad, con la finalidad
de recaudar fondos y hacer posible el sueño de tres alumnas y un
profesor de violín, provenientes de la ciudad de Iquitos, de bajos
recursos económicos. El dinero recaudado podrá solventar su viaje
a Lima para participar en el Festival Internacional Suzuki 2014.
El concierto fue un éxito, pues contó con la asistencia de
aproximadamente 100 personas. Los alumnos que participaron
se sintieron muy emocionados por la ayuda, que a su corta
edad, son capaces de dar. Al finalizar el concierto tanto los
padres como las profesoras y alumnos expresaron su orgullo
por el éxito del evento.
“El viaje a Iquitos ha sido muy beneficioso para nosotros,
porque demostramos nuestro talento en una presentación
para las personas de dicha ciudad. También porque con el
dinero recaudado y con el intercambio que tuvimos con los
niños de Iquitos, ayudamos a las personas a que aprendan
más de la música. En conclusión, pienso que este viaje de
manera particular me ayudó a demostrar los conocimientos
adquiridos como solista de violín, gracias a mi profesora
Natasha Encinas. ¡Gracias Iquitos por habernos recibido!”.

PRIMERA COMUNIÓN
Con una hermosa ceremonia oficiada por el Padre Rafael
Reátegui, el día sábado 28 de setiembre se realizó en nuestro
colegio la Primera Comunión de los alumnos de 4to Grado
de Lower School. Nuestros niños y niñas, quienes después
de varios meses de preparación espiritual se encontraban
listos para la recepción de este importante sacramento,
demostraron un especial fervor e ilusión, dejando en
nuestras memorias un grato y especial recuerdo.
Para complementar la belleza del evento, las dulces voces
de nuestro coro de alumnos acompañaron la ceremonia y
dieron la nota emotiva al evento.

CEREMONIA DE CONFIRMACIÓN
Testimonio de la alumna Lorena Leigh, con ocasión de la Ceremonia
de Confirmación 2013
Hace un año y medio, veía la Confirmación muy distante.
Creía en Dios, pero nunca iba a misa. En el primer retiro
reflexionamos sobre qué tan cerca a Dios estabas y la mayoría
–incluyéndome– estábamos alejados. Hubo diferentes charlas
para conocerte más como persona pero aún más importante,
conocer a Dios. Después del segundo retiro, empecé a ir a misa
todos los domingos y no por obligación sino por necesidad,
igual que la necesidad de rezar más de una vez todos los
días. Mi vida tomó un nuevo rumbo y ahora la veo desde otro
punto de vista.
Aprendí que ser católico no es decir “yo creo en Dios”, sino
saber que Dios está junto a ti siempre, que ir a misa no es una
pérdida de tiempo, sino una hora para aprender cosas que te
ayuden a tener cada vez una mejor vida, que ayudar y dar a
los demás no te hace menos sino te hace más y que ser un
verdadero católico no significa usar sotana o hábito, sino vivir
tu vida teniendo a Dios como centro de todo.
Testimonio de la alumna Pierina Gálvez, con ocasión de la Ceremonia
de Confirmación 2013
Desde hace dos años nos preparamos con esfuerzo y dedicación para
dar un importante paso: la Confirmación. Aunque a la mayoría les
parezca que confirmarse es fácil, no lo es. Confirmarse es para mí –y
espero que para muchos de los confirmados– no sólo afirmar nuestra
fe en Dios, sino la seguridad de poder matar al hombre viejo y renacer
por el espíritu a una nueva vida.
Al romper con el pasado uno vuelve al buen camino: uno ama a
sus enemigos, hace bien a los que lo odian, bendice a los que lo
maldicen, ruega por los que lo maltratan y pone su alma en orden.
Dios no pide que seamos perfectos, Él pide al hombre que construya
una casa, cave profundo y ponga los cimientos sobre la roca, para
que cuando venga una inundación la casa permanezca intacta.
En el segundo retiro hubo un ejercicio en el cual cada uno debía
escribir una carta a su propio Dios, contándole sus problemas y
agradeciéndole por todo. Nos dieron una hora pero cuando ésta
acabó a muchos les faltó tiempo. Ese ejercicio fue el que marcó
mi decisión de confirmarme, ya que por primera vez experimenté
conocer a mi propio Dios, hablarle, pedirle perdón por mis errores
y lo mejor fue poder hacerlo con transparencia y saber que Él me
entendía. A partir de esa conversación supe que ser discípulo del
Señor Jesús es algo distinto, que no sólo se vive cuando vamos a la
iglesia, sino en todo momento.

THREE-WAY MEETINGS IN LOWER SCHOOL
En el mes de octubre se realizaron las reuniones de portafolio,
o “Three-Way Meetings”, en las cuales los tutores y padres de
familia de Lower School tuvieron la oportunidad de celebrar los
logros de sus hijos y compartir reflexiones acerca de su proceso de
aprendizaje, utilizando su portafolio de trabajo como referencia.
Aquí algunos de los comentarios:
“Benefit is great! We were able to hear information about
our daughter’s behavior and what she sees as opportunities
of improvement”. (Santiago Castellano, papá de Cristina
Castellano, 4to Grado Scott).
¿Cómo te sentiste al mostrar tu trabajo a tus padres?
“Emocionado y contento de mostrarle mi portafolio a mi papá,
mi objetivo es mejorar y para eso tengo que esforzarme con mis
estudios” (Diego Rojas, 4to Grado Columbus).
“I felt nervous because it is a lot of papers to show and a lot of
English to speak, but afterwards I overcame it.”

¿Qué le pareció la reunión alumno/padre de familia/tutor?
“Me pareció muy provechosa, nos permitió contrastar si la
orientación que le damos en casa, está alineada con la metodología

EXPOSICIÓN DE ARTE DEL IB
En el año 2013 un grupo de entusiastas jovencitas llenas de
energía presentaron el examen de arte del IB. Ellas realizaron sus
proyectos a través de la investigación de tres preguntas centrales:
1. ¿Por qué/para qué se produce arte en nuestros contextos y
culturas? (contextualización)
2. ¿Cómo los artistas usan un lenguaje visual para comunicar sus
ideas?(lectura visual)
3. ¿Cómo creo ideas y las comunico visualmente? (proyecto de
creación)

En otras palabras, la enseñanza se brinda desde una propuesta
triangular, que significa hacer, ver y contextualizar lo que se hace
y lo que se ve: los alumnos investigan para aplicar lo aprendido.
Trabajo de Stephanie Barreda
Este grupo de emprendedoras, integrado por Cristina Criado,
Zuyi Jhon, Lorena Morales-Macedo, Stephanie Barreda,
Sheyla Flores, Da Woon Kim y Larisa Criado investigó,
resolvió problemas, creó, mostró preocupación y al final sintió
orgullo por su labor mostrando el resultado de sus indagaciones
en una exposición de importantes contenidos visuales. A ellas,
felicitaciones por haberse conocido y comprendido un poco más
en el interminable proceso de saber “quién soy”.
SIGN LANGUAGE CLUB
This club is about teaching people a new native 3-D
sign language, inspiring students to learn a way to
communicate with deaf and mute people, since there are
more than 750,000 deaf people in Peru. As well-rounded
and caring students, it has become a responsibility to help
those that really need our support, and to develop those
helping skills while in school.
In Peru there are only two secondary schools for deafand-mute kids, and through this club we have the
opportunity to help them and other people who are deaf
and in desperate need of support. If we can improve their
education, we can help them reach their full potential and
possibly change the lives of their next generations.
This year the sign language club will be merging with
CAS to create a project where students will be able to
learn both sign language and interact with young deaf
students that live in different realities, with the purpose of
exchanging our knowledge mutually.

COMMUNICATORS
PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION
In Form III, the English Department finished the year with a
Three Minute Speech competition between classes. The “fear
of speaking in public” is often cited as society’s greatest fear,
so we look to give opportunities to build these skills in our
students – to help them become competent, then confident,
communicators. The main goals are:
1. To deliver content to an audience, using both body and voice
to communicate.
2. To structure spoken information clearly.
3. To use persuasive techniques through language choices.
The students could interpret one of six themes and, after the
class competition, the finals were held in the SUM on the last
day of classes. It was an outstanding competition, and two
awards were given: Critics’ Choice and Students’ Choice. After
much deliberation, the Critics’ Choice noted the outstanding
courage shown by Vianka Delgado, the passion and subtle
rhetoric employed by Nicolás Gómez, the excellent extended
metaphors used by Jorge Brito, Diego Misad’s impassioned
defense of video games, Francesca Camarena’s wellconstructed speech on personal responsibility – If not you,
then who? – and Andrea Ugarte was declared third place for
her superb satire on teenage confusion, having a dream, and
what to do about both; in second place Veronica Cooklin’s
warm, humble and amusing speech about the importance
of being happy with what you have, but finally determined
that the Winner was Carlos Gutierrez for his powerful
critique of the dangers of labelling within institutions, which
demonstrated the most impressive range of public speaking
techniques. Andrea Ugarte’s speech “And Back To Me”
was voted as the winner of the Students’ Award. Most
importantly, every person in the room had delivered a Three
Minute Speech – becoming better Communicators – and has
the skills to build on for the future.
6. ADD A SPOONFUL OF TRUST
In September, the Newton Theatre Group participated
in the 16th edition of the BSP One-Act Play Festival with

The six Form V IB Theatre students created another
surprising comedy that had the audience hooked all
through the performance.
As the students explain: “This play was inspired by a
sequence from the famous TV soap opera María la del
Barrio. After some analysis and research we found
out about soap operas and melodrama itself. They
use exaggerated face expressions, lots of unnecessary
movements and strong feelings. Lack of trust between
members of the same family would be our main theme,
as in soap operas they play with conventional issues.
We wanted to see lots of fighting and yelling, as well as
strong emotions portrayed by the characters, and surreal
relationships amongst them. We enjoyed the idea that
melodrama out of context works in the opposite way:
instead of suffering, it creates laughter. That is how we
started imagining and inventing our play.”
All the Theatre students from Form III to Form VI went to
see the show, and then the play was presented to all Form
I and Form II students in two special performances in the
Pelagatti Auditorium.

CREATIVIDAD, ACCIÓN Y SERVICIO
Creatividad, Acción y Servicio (CAS) es uno de los programas
fundamentales del Diploma del IB ya que permite al alumno potenciar
su desarrollo personal e interpersonal a través del aprendizaje
experiencial. Al mismo tiempo, tiene la importante función de
contrarrestar la presión académica del resto del programa.
CAS ofrece una gran variedad de proyectos entre los cuales los
alumnos pueden elegir y acomodar a su horario. El trabajo se
realiza en horario extracurricular y siempre es liderado por un
profesor, personal administrativo, madre de familia o ex alumno.
Pero el proyecto no es exclusivo de nuestro país. Cada dos años
nuestro programa CAS tiene la posibilidad de participar en el
InterCAS Latinoamericano, que en el 2013 se desarrolló en
Medellín, Colombia. Nuestros alumnos María Clara Tavares,
Gabriel Chu y Francisco Gutierrez de Form V, acompañados
por Miss Katty Linares, tuvieron la oportunidad de ser parte
de este evento en el que también participaron cerca de 300
jóvenes de distintas nacionalidades realizando tareas de
creatividad, acción y servicio.
Nos estamos preparando para participar este año en el VI
InterCAS Perú a desarrollarse en Lurín a fines de setiembre.
GREEN DAY
Como parte de nuestro programa Plan Verde para cuidar el
medio ambiente, nuestros alumnos de 5to Grado tuvieron
la iniciativa de organizar para el 04 de diciembre un día
denominado “Bring Friends and Be a Friend” para promover
el uso de car-pool y motivar a los alumnos a venir en bicicleta
o caminando, ¡y algunos hasta en scooters!
El grupo de alumnos organizadores estuvo distribuido en las
distintas puertas de acceso al colegio para llevar un conteo del
total de automóviles y al final, comprobamos que la iniciativa
fue un éxito al lograr una importante reducción en el número
de vehículos que ingresaron al colegio.
ACCIÓN SOCIAL: FIESTA NAVIDEÑA
En el mes de noviembre, se organizó un “Día del No Uniforme”
con la finalidad de recaudar fondos para nuestro programa
de acción social CAS. Con lo recaudado, el día martes 10 de
diciembre ofrecimos una celebración navideña para los niños
de Musa, Manchay y Cieneguilla, quienes visitan nuestro
colegio durante todo el año escolar.
La entusiasta participación de nuestros alumnos de Form VI
contribuyó al éxito de esta fiesta, donde los niños no sólo
recibieron lindos regalos, sino también disfrutaron de un
ameno show y una cena navideña adelantada. Gracias a
todos los padres de familia y demás miembros de la Familia
Newton que hicieron posible la realización de esta actividad.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT
Thanks to this opportunity, the students gained a unique
insight of the entrepreneurial world, a morsel of real-world
market competition. The program is truly helpful because it
trains students to carry out a business idea effectively and
efficiently. Because the programme is formed by about
25 students, they are forced to organize and divide tasks
accordingly. If they want to be successful in any way, “coworkers” must understand each other and work together.
Junior Achievement is a global organization which provides
students (usually Form IV) with the opportunity to create a
fully operational company that sells a product. Back in August
2013, our students had the gratifying chance to participate
in this programme, selling a wearable blanket -La Batamantaunder the name of VuVule, Una Cía. J.A.
The true reward of Junior Achievement is not the profit
at the end (if they make any at all) but how to overcome
the problems that emerge along the way with teamwork
and determination, all while learning about enterprise and
opportunities in the real world.

5TH GRADE EXHIBITION
Our 5th grade students worked hard with their tutors and
mentors to produce their culminating performance in the
PYP: The Exhibition. This activity is a celebration of learning
designed to assess the students’ understanding of the key
concepts of the PYP, the students’ ability to apply the transdisciplinary skills, the students’ ability to work with the learner
profile in mind, and last but not least, the students’ ability to
decide on and take independent action.
This year, the Exhibition focused on technology and its impact
on society, and students conducted independent inquiry into
many different themes, which included toys, war, pollution,
sports, education, transport, music, film, the arts, health, food,
buildings, recycling and beauty. Using blogs, the internet,
books and newspapers, they got their inquiry under way, and
started to explore their chosen line of inquiry and central ideas.
In collaboration with mentors, tutors and parents, students
planned and went on field trips to robotics labs, plastic surgeons,
museums, adventure parks and many other places in order to take
their inquiry further and talk to experts.
One of the focuses of The Exhibition this year was to make the project
as sustainable as possible, so all students made a “Sustainability
Contract”. These contracts focused on reusing, reducing, recycling
and also aspects of happiness and well-being in their groups.
XIX REUNIÓN PLENARIA
intellectuals and leaders from international organizations. This
resulted in the foundation of “Fundación Círculo de Montevideo”,
an organization that set foot in our country with the purpose of
organizing the XIX Plenary Meeting in July and to which a group
of ten Form V Newton students attended. They had the chance to
listen to exhibitors discuss about one of the most important and
influential topics in our society nowadays: Education.
Latin America has entered a new moment in history. Globalization
establishes a new frontier in development, in which its people have
to be active participants. In order to reflect upon the challenges
and opportunities that have been raised in our region, and to
discuss new pathways and alternatives, Julio María Sanguinetti,
former President of Uruguay, invited a group of politicians,
“Educar hoy. ¿Qué y Cómo?” was the subject of the conference
and it left an important message about the development of
education through time. Carlos Slim, Mexican business magnate
and President of the Foundation, said that “education used to
be boring, dogmatic and expensive” and that in order to reach
a better quality of education “we should go from dogmatism
to debate” as didactic learning is much more efficient. As an
IB school, we are committed to make the difference in today’s
education and strive to develop knowledgeable and open minded
citizens of the world.

CISV PERÚ - YUYANAPAQ
CISV Internacional es una organización global de voluntarios con
más de 60 años de existencia y cuya misión es formar a niños y
jóvenes en justicia y paz a través de sus programas educativos.
reconocer, comprender y valorar la riqueza de la diversidad cultural
en las diferentes comunidades del mundo, dando especial énfasis
en la resolución de conflictos y el desarrollo sostenible.
Este año Perú ha sido por primera vez sede de un “Youth Meeting”,
gracias a Newton College que ofreció sus instalaciones durante
los 15 días que duró el evento. En esta reunión participaron
delegaciones de Finlandia, Francia, Suecia, Estados Unidos y Perú.
El tema central fue los derechos humanos y por ello el nombre
del programa “Yuyanapaq”, palabra quechua que significa “para
recordar”. Los jóvenes participantes, con edades entre 12 a 13
años, fueron quienes idearon actividades sobre derechos humanos
en las que investigaron, comunicaron y reflexionaron acerca de sus
propios puntos de vista, la perspectiva en sus países y en el mundo.
CISV Perú nació en 2006 y trabaja intensamente brindando
a cientos de niños y jóvenes la oportunidad de experimentar
vivencias y construir amistades globales, permitiendo que puedan

vida escolar. El pensamiento crítico, la capacidad de análisis y
elaboración de argumentos me ayuda en mis ensayos y la práctica
de hablar en público me sirve en mis presentaciones orales.
Este año, cuatro alumnos de Newton College, Annya Serkovic,
Jorge Agüela, Sebastián Sarria y la suscrita, participamos en
la competencia Panamericana en Bermudas representando al
Perú. El equipo peruano tuvo un gran desempeño, llegando a la
semifinal de la categoría en español y ganando muchos debates en
inglés. Los temas variaron desde la legalización de la posesión de
armas a la posibilidad de retirar las sanciones a Cuba. En este viaje
aprendimos sobre temas de importancia global, debatimos contra
grandes oradores e hicimos amigos de diferentes países.
A propósito de la participación de nuestro colegio en la Conferencia
Modelo de las Naciones Unidas de Harvard, recogimos el testimonio de
Alejandra Bellatin, miembro del equipo de Debates, sobre su experiencia.
Debate me ha enseñado mucho. Tenemos sesiones semanales y
participamos en debates mensuales organizados por la Asociación
Peruana de Debates (APD). El entrenamiento es duro, en especial
en época de tareas del colegio; sin embargo, me ayuda en mi
PEACE WEEK
During the week of September 16th through 20th we
celebrated Peace Week with a series of activities that brought
all the Newton community together. Our school was decorated
with peace doves, peace hand trees and dove collages all
throughout the campus. Our students enjoyed films, art
sessions and competitions, dance workshops, singing, a
peace football match, discussions and sharing of peace sign
language messages.
The week ended with an assembly in the Theatre, which was
an excellent culmination of this celebration and an indication
that we, as a community, are moving in the right direction.
Our students are principled citizens of the world who are
taking responsibility for their own actions and are striving to
make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the
world around us.
Algunos meses más tarde, Annya Serkovic, José Carlos
Breña, Sebastián Sarria y yo fuimos aceptados en el equipo
que participará en los Panamericanos 2014 en México. Además,
gracias a la preparación adicional, entré al equipo que participará
en el Mundial de Tailandia 2014. Sé que el aprendizaje, las
amistades y buenas experiencias continuarán.

RISK TAKERS
1ST GRADE PLAY - GREEN POWER
Para la obra de teatro de 1er Grado, este año nuestros
alumnos trabajaron el tema de la energía renovable. El
trabajo comenzó en el mes de marzo, y durante todo el año
cada clase investigó, escribió un libreto y creó personajes
según el tipo de energía que le había sido asignada, para
desarrollar así la obra que se presentó en diciembre. A través
de este proyecto los alumnos no sólo fueron audaces y
creativos comunicadores, sino también activos conocedores,
creando conciencia en ellos sobre el uso de la energía.
KINDERGARTEN SHOW
During their Unit of Inquiry on “Goodies and Baddies”
the Kindergarten pupils learnt that many stories have
a recurring theme of good and bad. They read lots of
different versions of well-known fairytales, created and
wrote their own stories and gave their opinion on what
good and bad mean. As a closing event for this fun unit,
the Kinder children performed the story of Aladdin in our
theatre. It was an evening filled with music and colour,
with the participation of each one of the Kinder classes,
and which their families enjoyed enthusiastically. It was a
fantastic finale to a lovely unit and it showed what risktakers and communicators we have at Newton College!
NEWTON FESTIVAL 2013
El sábado 21 de setiembre se realizó nuestro acostumbrado
Festival Newton, el cual invitó a todos los asistentes a “Vivir
la Magia del Sétimo Arte”. Fue un sábado inolvidable,
en el cual la familia Newton, reunida en pleno, pudo
disfrutar de una variedad de deliciosos platos, actividades,
juegos y llevarse espectaculares premios en la tómbola
y sorteos. El día estuvo lleno de diversión para grandes
y chicos; pudimos apreciar el talento y habilidades de
nuestros alumnos en los distintos números musicales que
se presentaron, así como un simpático desfile de moda
donde un grupo de alumnos modeló.
SEGUIMOS CRECIENDO
Siguiendo con nuestro plan de expansiones, a finales de año
inauguramos el Edificio de Servicios del colegio con un área
techada de más de 800 mts2, ubicado cerca de la Puerta 4 frente
a los campos deportivos. Las instalaciones albergan las nuevas
oficinas de Logística, Mantenimiento y Seguridad así como los
almacenes de útiles y materiales, talleres de carpintería, pintura,
reparaciones en general y depósitos de mobiliario y equipo.
Igualmente, junto al Teatro Newton se construyó un anexo de dos
pisos, con salones de música y danza, camerinos y vestuarios.
