UN EDIFICIO. UN PARQUE NATURAL. UN USO: NATURALEZA. UN UMBRAL ENTRE EL MUNDO URBANO Y EL NATURAL. ENTRE ARQUITECTURA Y NATURALEZA, UN MATERIAL. NATURALMENTE, MADERA. A BUILDING. A NATURAL PARK. ONE PURPOSE: THE INTERPRETATION OF NATURE. THIS IS A LA INTERPRETACIÓN DE LA THRESHOLD BETWEEN THE URBAN WORLD AND THE NATURAL ONE. AND NATURE, BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE THERE IS ONE MATERIAL. NATURALLY, WOOD. The projection is structurally solved by means of a mixed truss, made of galvanized steel and wood. TED AND THAT OF THE WETLANDS OF SUMMER OF spaincontract 46 Travelling Un diseño singular con un ritmo marcado: 20/20 /20./An unusual design with a marked rhythm: 20/20/20. them to valuable moist soil. And above them, the unusual architecture of this building with the body and soul of wood, from which extends a steel projection whose 21 meters of a flying buttress seems to make the impossible fight against the gravity possible. Its authors, Jose Mª Garcia del Monte and Ana Maria Montiel Jiménez, explain the points of the project: “A surprising place, a suggestive program, an intense aroma of wood and a desire to play with gravity. From that point, the will to expand a building beyond its limits, flying over an imagined and essential pool, which allows the visitor to be situated in a privileged place, right in the centre of Salburúa Park, with the city at his back, over the water, from a point which could not be reached in any other way. There is the determination to not disguise the structure during the constructive process”. To combine these two points of view was one of the complexities of the project: “the great difficulty was based on estimating what was possible and coherent bearing in mind the principle of dangerous construction”. A threshold of porches Like a threshold between two worlds, the urban and the natural, the language of the building is based on the porch. In fact each section is a succession of wood porches. “And the totality of the building is the sum of the combination of its sections, each one of which is formed by the repetition of a certain number of porches. The transition from one space between two supporting walls to another takes place thanks to the combination of types, in a natural way without needing to produce fence mechanisms for changing spaces between halls nor discontinuities that break with the logic of the building”. These architects, who form the Studio, have designed six different porches, that correspond to six situations of the section: the large open space on this wooden floor, a lateral flying buttress, a lateral flying buttress with internal stairs, a lateral flying buttress with an inner space, a lateral flying buttress with a central open space with an emergent viewpoint, and a large open space on two wooden floors. The building is a container built by means of adding porches. Wood, the premise The leading role of wood is one of the great premises of the building. “It is an element of mediation with the Nature, capable of adaption as it has time on its side.” Not for nothing is this project the finalist in the category of the architectural “To live with Wood 2008” Prizes, which has not yet closed this edition. The building was the object of a speech at the Symposium for International Architecture in Wood, Egurtek 2008. And the prizes were named after Miles van der Rohe. Wood, concrete, glass and steel are its materials. The concrete, only used for laying the foundations and bases, the steel in the projection and the carpentry, the stained glass form part of the carpentry which closes off the building from the interior of the porches, and forms the closure of the projection over its steel structure. Four materials and a protagonist: wood. “We wanted to only use wood once the cut is produced between the land and porches, a cut that is materialized in a concrete base thereby avoiding contact between the wood and the humidity of the ground. In the structure we combine laminated structure and micro-laminated vacsolized wood, treated in a sterilizer with copper salts. They have not applied lasers so as to let the wood age from solar radiation”. The expected wood was not free of difficulty. The team set itself quite a challenge. “It was necessary to check the system; to estimate its dimensional limits, which almost always results from rigidity and not from resistance; to study the knots, because in wood they constitute the weak point by which water, fatigue or local fragility of a piece could render the system useless; to analyze how to secure embeddings without resorting to steel, which was only essential for the viewpoint; how to obtain the necessary fire resistance with a reserve section; or how to avoid revealing the most vulnerable points to rain, but without resorting to skins which would have transformed the image of the building”. The result, an unusual design with a marked rhythm: 20/20/20. It is 20 cm. of support, hollow, aid. Avoiding, the help of the steel, wood, “and its operational logic”, gives rise to the sections of the Ataria. Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza 47 spaincontract La madera es a la vez imagen y estructura./The wood is simultaneously image and structure. building. “We wanted the wood to be simultaneously image and structure, that is to say not making a structure a place for later hanging a lattice window, but neither for displaying successive layers that mask the building and make one think about wood as a secondary personage”. The result is a surprising structure that is simultaneously its skin. And if the outside surprises, the interior astonishes. The wood has again completely redecorated the building: panels of pine dealt with copper salts and oak floors take Nature to each corner. Also the outer structure is transmitted to the interior, both in terms of the partitions as in the games of sun and shade that literally line the interior spaces. The projection Just like a large outside walkway that locates the visitor directly over the Park, the projection emerges from the body of the building and it projects 21 meters ahead. The game with gravity is evident. It is resolved structurally by means of mixed segment, steel and galvanized wood. Its glass closure allows total visibility from the interior. “The closing leans on the galvanized steel structure. It is like a glass veil, open and with great freedom of movement for making it compatible with the movements of the structure”, explains the architects. The uses Forecast for June 2009, the Ataria centre is currently engaged in examining its interior equipment. The Zorrozua Associate Study is managing the work. And at the moment the team is found working hard installing the building with equipment and museum graphic elements which have been adapted to its use and contents. With 1,600 m2 area, a deep Annex space, two floors and access by the upper floor, the Nature Interpretation Centre of Salburúa will include located in its reception and the lobby the exhibition halls, a living room and a cafeteria. The projection is, evidently, a privileged viewpoint. And the lower floor will count on an assembly hall, small inferior, workshop and kids’ room. There are as well offices for the personnel working in the Centre. Nature is the leading element at this building. From the surroundings to the content, Ataria is the threshold of a natural park. And that threshold is not alien to, its contains, as it presents them, explains them, wraps them in a building made up and limited to the most elemental and natural par excellence material. Naturally, wood.
