PRESENTATION
WHEN TRAVELLING INLAND,
EXTREMADURA IS ESSENTIAL
Spanish imperial eagles, black vultures, Griffon vultures,
Egyptian vultures, black storks… These are among the many
species that soar above Monfragüe –and just a sampling of the
ornithological wealth of Extremadura, which has become a
favourite region for nature lovers from all over the world.
British, German, French, American and, of course, Spanish
tourists –to name just a few nationalities– visit us with their
cameras, binoculars and telescopes.
Extremadura can boast some magnificent nature resources
and a wide range of products and services for this kind of
tourist. In addition, we're specialists in organising events like
the Extremadura Birdwatching Fair, the leading such event in
Spain and the second most important in Europe after the one
that's held in England each summer. This year we're
celebrating its tenth birthday with a record number of
exhibitors and the best programme of conferences and
activities since it began.
Nature and sporting tourism are a priority for the regional
government of Extremadura, just as culture and gastronomy
are. In 2015 we increased the budget for the DirectorateGeneral of Tourism by 43% to a total of 35.5 million euros. We
realise that through quality events –like the Extremadura
Birdwatching Fair, the Mérida Festival of Classic Theatre,
Cáceres Spanish Capital of Gastronomy, or the region's historic
routes– we can become a point of reference for inland travel in
Spain.
The numbers show we're on the right road: almost six million
tourists stayed in Extremadura over the past four years, a
figure the region had never before achieved, and one that has
made it an essential destination for domestic and international
travellers.

THE EXTREMADURA BIRDWATCHING
FAIR, THE BIG EVENT
IN SOUTHERN EUROPE
In just ten years, the Extremadura Birdwatching Fair has gone
from a small event held in a hamlet in Monfragüe to becoming
the principal fair for bird tourism in southern Europe. We hold
this edition with a record 94 exhibitors from different parts of
Spain and from other countries: travel destinations, companies,
institutions and artists. In addition, there's a very complete
programme of conferences and activities for the public.
Because of its natural resources and the work of specialists,
Extremadura is an outstanding place for European
ornithological tourism. The Extremadura Birdwatching Fair has
contributed to this. We want to stress the fair's international
calling, as demonstrated by the presence of speakers,
businessmen and journalists from such diverse countries as
the United States, China, India, the United Kingdom, France,
Serbia and Chile.
With events like the Extremadura Birdwatching Fair we want to
make the region one of the important domestic destinations for
ecotourism, with an emphasis on ecology, 'bio' products and
sustainability. This is one of the pillars of the Strategy for
Nature and Sporting Tourism that we presented last year, and
which includes investment in green lanes, hiking and cycling
routes, ravines and swimming areas, and fishing tourism,
among other things.
I'm convinced of the potential of nature tourism in our region.
Through the joint efforts of institutions and companies –for
example the Birding Club– we'll make Extremadura an even
more important tourist destination.

FIO 2015
The Extremadura Birdwatching Fair wants to celebrate its
tenth birthday in style, with the thousands of people like
you who visit Monfragüe. Here's where you'll find
information about the fair and its activities, whether
they're aimed at professionals from the fields of
ornithology and tourism or at amateurs who just want to
enjoy three days in this marvellous setting. Monfragüe
National Park has been declared a Biosphere Reserve.
Where to begin your visit? There is a wide offer of birding
destinations in Spain and other countries, and tourism
firms are here to help you organise a trip to enjoy new
experiences in contact with nature. Here you will find the
best in optical equipment and photography, and there's
plenty of valuable information in guidebooks, pamphlets
and maps. Learn about the latest developments in
conservation projects both inside and outside Spain, visit
the exhibit of the prize-winners and runners-up in the
photo contest dedicated to birds, or inspect the excellent
work of the artists who draw from nature.
The fair puts the accent on bird tourism because we want
Extremadura to be an international point of reference in
this field, but we also give great importance to spreading
the message of preserving the environment. To this end
there are many free activities for all kinds of visitors: from
conferences by prestigious domestic and international
experts –about photography, endangered species and the
news media– to children's workshops and guided visits so
you can get to know Monfragüe.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Uge Fuertes Sanz
Starting with his earliest photography Uge Fuertes has tried to portray
nature from different perspectives, avoiding the conventional. He often
works from preconceived ideas, first imagining the photos he will then
try to capture with the camera. Many other times he imagines worlds
–real or unreal–that border the surreal. During this presentation he will
show part of his work in the world of birds, from his earliest and most
documentary efforts to his most recent images, many of which have
been achieved through multiple exposure camera techniques. He will
also offer the audio-visual presentation “Imagining Worlds”, which
demonstrates his special vision of nature photography.

Kiko Arcas
In recent years we've all heard about explosive cyclogenesis
(“weather bomb”) and its terrible consequences. But in this talk the
photographer will show us the more positive side of these maritime
storms and how he has been able to take advantage of these
adverse climate conditions to combine his two passions: bird
photography and the sea in all its splendour. He's done so in unique
places along the coast of Galicia, in northwest Spain: (Costa da
Morte, Cabo Home, Cabo Silleiro, etc.), with all the difficulties that
this entails (rain, cold, waves, tides), all of which can makes this
kind of work real “chaos” for the photographer. After his talk he will
present some photos of birds from recent years, besides paying a
small tribute to all bird lovers.

there is no better time or place to pay homage to him than here,
in his native land, at the Monfragüe Park he loved so much and
surrounded by the many friends who shared his passion.
Photographer Rubén Martínez, who accompanied him on so many
field trips, will show us his photographs and speak of the many
wonderful times they shared.

With more than 10 years of experience taking pictures in many
different settings, Marina Cano will explain her unconventional way
of working, in which she makes the best use of the possibilities she
finds in each situation, breaking the rules and unafraid of being
different. With a vision that is removed from mere documentalism,
Marina Cano's photography does not seek to record or instruct but
to excite and surprise: birds are the stars of these photographs and
are subtly rendered to create a unique atmosphere. She will explain
photos made in the Cantabria region of northern Spain, the Farne
Islands (England), the Hula Valley (Israel), Amboseli (Kenya), South
Africa and Namibia: why she chose those places and the experiences
behind each photo.

unrepeatable images that all photographers would like to have in
their archives.

After 20 years of a plan to increase the number of lammergeier in Aragón, the latest tracking data
provides cause for relative optimism, although we must still be vigilant in conserving this bird that is so
emblematic of the region. In these 20 years the number of breeding units has gone from less than 40 in
1994 to close to 90 in 2014. In addition to improving the chances for survival of this species, one of the
accomplishments of the plan has been to make the lammergeier a resource for everyone in Aragón, with
more and more people now interested in preserving it. To speak of the lammergeier is to speak of
Aragón, as seen in the many different ways in which this very special vulture serves as an advertisement
for, and trademark of, Aragón.
And birdwatching is doubtless
one of the best ways to
accomplish this.
FESTIVAL OF BIRD MIGRATION:
THE PIONEERING EVENT IN SPAIN
16:30h
Alejandro García Herrera
Director of Aves Cantábricas
The Festival of Bird Migration, whose first edition was held in 2007,
has become a point of reference for Spanish nature lovers. It is held
on the third weekend of September in the Marismas de Santoña,
Victoria y Joyel Natural Park, in the Cantabria region of northern
Spain. The aim is to introduce people to the phenomenon of bird
migration by making them more aware of conservation and by
developing this natural park as en engine for local prosperity.

As part of a programme to preserve the remaining populations of
savannah chimpanzees in Senegal, the Jane Goodall Institute is
promoting nature tourism to achieve socially responsible
development that is compatible with biodiversity. The Dindefelo
Nature Reserve, which is managed by the local community,
constitutes a basic tool for protecting the fauna and flora in the
Guinea-Conakry border region. Since its creation, different
biological research has led to important discoveries. The rocky
landscape, semi-deciduous forests and gallery forests, which are
scare in the rest of Senegal, gives rise to bird species that are
found nowhere else in the country.

eBird is the world's busiest platform for making lists of birds in
real time. In the United States it has revolutionised the way the
birdwatching community accesses information and transmits its
sightings, and the webpage is rapidly growing all over the world.
Any person or association can access the eBird global database,
which contains a huge amount of information generated by
thousands of amateur and professional ornithologists. Since 2013
the use of eBird in Spain has grown, thanks to the collaboration of
new expert reviewers and the efforts to get more contributors to
use this valuable tool.

Batumi, located on the banks of the Black Sea in the Republic of
Georgia, is probably one of the best places to observe migratory
birds in the whole Palearctic region. A large part of the birds that
use the eastern route to travel to Africa pass through this point,
with incredible concentrations of birds during the postnuptial
migration period. This session will deal with the importance
Batumi, of the work carried out by the Batumi Raptor Count –with
more than 1 million birds of prey noted each season– and other
points of ornithological interest in Georgia, such as the Caucasus.
EXTREMADURA, THE LAND THAT FLIES THE MOST
By Joaquín Araújo, Naturalist, writer, journalist and Editor

“There are leaderships that are healthy, transparent, light and beautiful. They are the ones that don't
hang heavy over a world where too many people want everything to be measured and weighed and
counted in a way that has nothing to do with what's essential –in other words, with life going on.
Here where the GDP is low, we have the best BEP (Beautiful Exterior Product) in all Europe. We have
tender, infinite landcapes. Each holm oak, each cork tree, each arabutus is a crutch supporting an
earth and an air that are crippled in so many other places. But above all this are the messengers,
who authenticate our privilege: the birds. They are certificates and symbols of natural quality and
connect us with an understanding of what life is: this land flies more and better than any other. So
we must fly with them, as I say in my short poem:
“If they fly high
We will be horizons:
The art of air!”

THE LARGEST INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF

TOURISM AND PHOTOGRAPHY.
Massimiliano Biasioli | Director of Skua Nature
Skua Nature has created an international network of reserves in the
best natural parts of Europe. While most are not open to the public,
they are among the best-equipped places on the continent for nature
photography. This is a unique project in Europe: these are not simply
photograpahic destinations or individual hides but a totally different
concept. The location of the reserves in different habitats and
ecosystems provides the largest possible range of wildlife. The Skua
Nature projects always conforms to the highest ethical and
environmental standards, and part of the income from photographic
activity goes to research, monitoring and local conservation.

Javier Elorriaga | Birding The Strait
Javier
Antoni Elorriaga
Margalida
This talk will lay out the problems of identifying the long-legged
buzzard and similar birds. It will present the results of a study made
in Morocco, from the south to the Mediterranean coast, on both
sides of the Strait of Gibraltar, and on the Iberian Peninsula;
Extremadura is one of the areas with some of the birds that were
most difficult to identify. Likewise, there will be an examination of
how this bird's hybridisation with the common buzzard may be
influencing its possible expansion from Africa northwards. Javier
Elorriaga presently works at Birding The Strait as a guide and
photographer in the Straits of Gibraltar and Morocco.

ILLUSTRATING BIRDS: THE IMPORTANCE
OF ILLUSTRATION IN ORNITHOLOGY.
Diego Ortega Alonso
From the very beginnings of ornithology, illustrations have been a
key tool in the cataloguing and inventory of species. Thanks to
guides and teaching material, birdwatching attracts more and
more people. But even in our technological age, when digital
photography is at its height, natural illustrations are still in great
demand, perhaps because of their interpretative capacity and the
creativity they bring to publications. Diego Ortega will demonstrate
in a practical manner what it's like to be a nature illustrator, how
he takes on different jobs, and what the keys are to bringing an
artistic, personal vision to a scientific discipline.

NATURE SOUNDS
DISCOVERY WORKSHOP
OF BIRDSONGS
Leader: Eloisa Matheu
Eloisa Matheu began recording birdcalls in 1987 and since then she
has travelled the world listening to and capturing the sounds of
nature with her microphones. In 1990 she launched 'Alosa, Sonidos
de la Naturaleza', a recording studio that, for the first time in Spain,
released guides to the different birdcalls of the Iberian Peninsula.
This pioneering editions, on cassette tapes, were of great use to
ornithologists and bird lovers: for years titles like Aves de nuestros
campos, Aves de nuestros bosques y montañas, and especially Guía
sonora de las aves de España were essential works for many of us.
Later came the CDs and the publications about other fauna
(amphibians, mammals and insects) and sound landscapes of Spain
and different ecosystems around the world. Working with different
publishers, she brought the magic of nature sounds to periodicals,
the interpretation centres at protected areas, museums,
documentaries and many other projects.
To kick off the twenty-fifth birthday of Alosa, Eloisa Matheu will give
two workshops dedicated to listening to and identifying birds from
their songs. They include a morning nature walk and an afternoon
work session during which participants will use different tools to
help remember and recognise these beautiful and sometimes
complex songs.

Carlos de Hita
Carlos de Hita is a nature sounds technician, something he began two decades ago and that has led him
to produce a large archive of fauna sounds –especially Spanish but also from Africa, Asia and the
Amazon. It also includes traditional activities, as well as sound landscapes from the Iberian Peninsula
and the Canary Islands. During this period he has worked with all kinds of devices: sometimes with the
sound as a complement to the image, and others as an independent narrative element. Among the
former are his many sound tracks for documentary and feature-length films. In the latter area, with the
sounds for their own sake, he has published several record collections of natural sound landscapes and
guides to identifying different birdsongs. De Hita has made sound installations for exhibitions,
museums and interpretation centres. He has long been a contributor to the SER radio network and runs
the 'El Sonido de la Naturaleza' blog at elmundo.es.

ROYAL BIRDS
EXHIBITION
FAUNA EXHIBITION
“ROYAL BIRDS”
MONFRAGÜE NATIONAL PARK
Villarreal de San Carlos
This exhibit of stuffed animals is based on more than 10 years of work by the DirectorateGeneral of the Environment of the Government of Extremadura. The samples were illegally
hunted, poisoned, run over by cars or died from other causes, and were collected by agents in the
field so as to determine the cause of death. It is important to exhibit them publicly so everyone
can learn why our wildlife dies.
The animals were given to an expert taxidermist, Eustaquio Redondo Sánchez, who spends
most of his time “giving these animals a second life,” as he puts it. His work goes beyond just
reconstructing an animal: he tries to find the expressive features that give each one a unique
beauty and naturalness. That is the real contribution of the artist.
Besides enjoying the chance to see some animals that are difficult to observe in the wild, this
exhibit presents the principal dangers to our fauna and shows visitors how to help protect it.
