WHAT IS KAMISHIBAI?
Before showing you how to make
the most of your Kamishibai, we
are going to look back many
years to explain where it comes
from. Kamishibai is a Japanese
word whose literal meaning is
“paper theatre”. This traditional
method of storytelling was first
used in Buddhist temples in
Japan in the 12th century and
we have brought it to you today
so that you can enjoy thousands
of stories with your kids.
This tradition continued for
centuries, and in the early 1900s
it resurfaced again with great
force. The “Gaito Kamishibaya”
(which means something like
“The Storyteller”) travelled from
town to town on his bike with
his wooden Kamishibai to tell
traditional stories to children.
These, in exchange, bought the
candy he brought with him and
in this way he made a living.

¿QUÉ ES EL KAMISHIBAI?
Antes de enseñarte cómo
sacarle el mejor partido a
tu Kamishibai, nos vamos
a remontar muchos años
atrás, para explicarte de
dónde proviene. Kamishibai
es una palabra japonesa que
literalmente quiere decir “teatro
de papel”. Esta forma tradicional
de contar historias se empezó a
utilizar en los templos budistas
de Japón en el siglo XII y hoy, la
hemos traído hasta ti para que
puedas disfrutar de miles de
historias con los más pequeños
de la casa.
Esta tradición se fue
manteniendo durante siglos,
hasta que a principios de 1900
resurgió de nuevo con mucha
fuerza. El “Gaito Kamishibaya”
(que quiere decir algo así como
“el cuentacuentos”) viajaba de
pueblo en pueblo con su bicicleta
y su kamishibai de madera para
contar historias tradicionales
a los niños. Éstos, a cambio, le
compraban las golosinas que él
traía consigo y de esa manera se
ganaba la vida.

The first thing you have to do
is sort all the sheets of the
Kamishibai story from image
No. 1 to the last in sequence:
01, 02, 03, etc., and with all
illustrations on the same side.
The sheets are already sorted
when you buy them, but we are
not responsible for what the
kids do when playing with them.
Make
sure
they
are
in
order.
Otherwise...
it
could be a crazy story!

back), showing sheet 01 (colour
illustration) to the audience.

Now, stand behind the Kamishibai
theatre and introduce yourself
as the Gaito Kamishibaya of
your home. Start the narration
by reading the text on the
back of the last sheet, which
corresponds to the image
currently displayed (sheet 01
at the beginning of the story).
6 What is kamishibai?
Now you know the history and
origin of the Kamishibai, we will
show you how to use it and make
the most of it. You will see that is
very easy and that even little kids
can enjoy it all by themselves.
It is very easy to start using
it. Just open the three doors
and... Hey presto!... your theatre
is ready for your Kamishibai
performances!
We recommend to sit your
little (or big) audience on the
floor and put the Kamishibai on
a raised surface (a table, for
example). This way, you’ll attract
all their attention immediately.
The Kamishibai gives children
the opportunity to be involved in
the stories, not only as listeners
but also as performers, with the
following benefits:

After reading the text for
sheet 01, remove sheet 01 to
your right and put it in the last
position of the sheets already in
the Kamishibai theatre, i.e. the
first you have in view, in order
to read the text on the back.
Continue in this way until the
end of the narrative of the last
scene shown (end of story),
whose text is on the back of the
penultimate sheet of the story.

Ahora que ya sabes de dónde
proviene el Kamishibai y su
historia, vamos a enseñarte
cómo usarlo y a sacarle el
mayor partido. Verás que es
muy fácil y que hasta los más
pequeños de la casa podrán
disfrutar de él ellos solitos. Para
empezar a usarlo es muy fácil.
Simplemente tienes que abrir sus
tres puertas y en un segundo...
¡tachán! ¡Ya tienes tu teatro listo
para tus funciones Kamishibai!
Te aconsejamos que sientes a
tu pequeña (o gran) audiencia
en el suelo y que el Kamishibai
lo pongas sobre una superficie
elevada (una mesa, por ejemplo).
De esta manera, captarás
toda su atención de manera
inmediata.
El kamishibai propicia que
los niños y niñas tengan la
posibilidad de ser protagonistas
de las historias, no solo como
oyentes, sino también como
intérpretes con los consiguientes
beneficios:
Contar y leer cuentos.
Aprender vocabulario.
Estimular la imaginación y el interés.
Enriquecer su conocimiento general.
Fomentar el gusto por la lectura.
En definitiva, a prolongar el
pensamiento, la imaginación, la
memoria, el espíritu de la vida
que alimentan las narraciones
y las historias que habitan en el
teatro kamishibai.

Lo primero que tienes que
hacer es ordenar todas las
láminas del cuento Kamishibai
desde la imagen nº 1 a la
última en orden correlativo:
01, 02, 03, etc... y con todas las
ilustraciones hacia el mismo lado.
Las láminas ya vienen ordenadas
cuando las compras, pero no
nos
hacemos
responsables
de lo que puedan hacer los
pequeños de la casa cuando
estén
jugando
con
ellas.
Asegúrate de que están en
orden, si no... ¡ podría resultar
una
historia
disparatada!

BLA, BLA...
Una vez ordenadas las láminas del
cuento, se introducen todas a la
vez en la ranura interior del teatro
Kamishibai (por la parte posterior),
mostrando la lámina 01 (ilustración
en color) hacia la audiencia.

Ahora, colócate detrás del
teatro Kamishibai y preséntate
como el Gaito Kamishibaya de
tu casa. Comienza la narración
leyendo el texto que figura en
el dorso de la última lámina y
que corresponde a la imagen
mostrada en ese momento (la
lámina 01 al comienzo del cuento).
Una
vez
leído
el
texto
correspondiente a la lámina
01, extráela hacia tu derecha
y colócala en el último lugar de
las láminas que ya están en el
teatro Kamishibai. Es decir, la
primera que tengas a la vista para
poder leer el texto de detrás.
Continúa con este sistema hasta
finalizar la narración de la última
escena mostrada (fin del cuento) y
cuyo texto encontrarás en el dorso
de la penúltima lámina del cuento.

beautifully and imaginatively
illustrated in full colour on one
side. On the back of each sheet
is the text for each sheet of
the story in two languages.
All stories are bilingual, most
of them Spanish-English, but
there are others that combine
Spanish-Catalan, Spanish-Basque
etc.
The stories that fit into a

several age groups. All of them
