Below letter was sent to the Executive Council and the Island Council of the Public Entity Bonaire on

Toeristisch budget gekort, BONHATA roept om actie
Sinds decennia is de toeristische sector de drijvende kracht van de economie van Bonaire. Desondanks is
recent het bedrag dat beschikbaar wordt gesteld aan TCB (Tourism Corporation Bonaire) gekort.
De Bonaire Hotel and Tourism Association (BONHATA) ziet kansen voor het lokale bestuur om met het
correct innen van de toeristenbelasting en autoverhuurbelasting de fondsen beschikbaar voor die
promotie niet alleen terug te brengen naar het recente niveau maar om het budget zelfs te verhogen
teneinde met correcte besteding onze eilandeconomie een noodzakelijke impuls te geven.
Daar komt bij dat in de huidige situatie vele bedrijven en particulieren op Bonaire die kamers en/of
auto’s verhuren aan toeristen geen toeristen- en/of autoverhuurbelasting afdragen. Naar schatting van
het OLB zelf wordt meer dan 50 % van de toeristenbelasting niet geind en de inschatting is dat het bij de
autoverhuurbelasting om een soortgelijk percentage gaat.
Naast het kunnen verbeteren van de promotie van Bonaire als toeristische bestemming zal een correcte
inning van genoemde belastingen ook oneerlijke concurrentie tussen verhuurders die wel betalen en zij
die dat niet doen opheffen.
BONHATA roept het BC en de eilandsraad op om deze ongeïnde belastingen op korte termijn actief te
gaan innen en deze middelen ter beschikking te stellen voor promotie van Bonaire als toeristische
bestemming, de belangrijkste pijler van onze economie.

Tourist budget cut, BONHATA calls for action
For decades, the tourism industry is the driving force of the economy of Bonaire. Nevertheless, recently
the amount available for TCB (Tourism Corporation Bonaire) was reduced.
The Bonaire Hotel and Tourism Association (BONHATA) sees opportunities for the local government to,
with the correct collection of the tourist tax and car rental tax not only increase the funds available for
the promotion of our destination to the recent level but to even increase the budget in order to, with
the correct spending give our island economy a necessary boost.
Moreover, in the present situation, many companies and individuals on Bonaire that rent out rooms
and/or cars to tourists do not pay tourist and/or car rental tax. Estimated by the OLB itself is that more
than 50% of the tourist tax is not collected and the estimate is that a similar percentage is applicable
regarding the car rental tax.
Besides being able to improve the promotion of Bonaire as a tourist destination, a proper collection of
taxes mentioned also ends the unfair competition between entities that pay and entities/individuals
that do not pay their taxes.
BONHATA requests the Executive Council and Island Council to on short term actively collect the non
collected taxes and make these funds available for the promotion of Bonaire as a tourist destination, the
most important pillar of our economy.
