ENVIRONMENT AND BEACHES
Our Nature
Our town has an extension of 203 km2, a third of it is occupied by
the Natural Park “Bahía de Cádiz”. This Park is composed of marsh,
rivers, dunes, islands,... that makes the perfect union between Sea and
Land.
Walking across the town centre, we may see the reason why
Chiclana obtained the prize of the Green Flag “Ciudad sostenible”
(year 2002). Near our main streets you can observe easily birds and
animals like storks, swallows and chameleons.
Near to the town centre we can enjoy different ecosystems (marsh,
countryside, pinewoods, beaches, etc.)

Our beaches
The beaches of Chiclana “La Barrosa” and “Sancti Petri” are situated
7 kms away from the town center and they are an important tourist
and natural resort. From there we can appreciate the “Island and
Castle of Sancti Petri”, where, according to legend, was situated the
Phoenician Temple of Melkart (Hercules).
La Barrosa Beach is 6 km long. It has been awarded the Quality
Mark “Q” for Quality Tourism, the Ecoplayas Flag, the environmental
Certificate 14.001 and the Blue Flag.
Sancti Petri Beach is 2 km long. It has been awarded the Quality

Our pinewoods
They occupy a special place in our town. “Pinar de la Espartosa”,
“Pinar del Hierro” and “Pinar de la Barrosa” are particularly beautiful.
The last one is provided with leisure installations for the use and
enjoyment of the visitors.

Our lagoons
On both sides of our river “Río Iro” there are several temporary
lagoons and pools. The most importante are “Jeli” and “Montellano”,
both are natural reserves and protected areas for the birds.

Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist
A beautiful example of Neoclassicism and a place of Cultural
Interest.It was built between 1773 and 1814 by the architects Torcuato
Cayón and Torcuato Benjumeda. Inside, one part of the altarpiece,
originally from a previous church is by Roque Balduque (1552). This
work along with two canvasses from the Zurbarán school stand out.
Church and Convent of Jesus the Nazarene
Chiclana’s most important
Baroque work. Built between
1667 and 1674 thanks to
the benefits resulting from
tradewith America. Especially
remarkable inside are the
baroque altarpieces (17th
and 18th centuries) and the
carving of JesúsNazareno of
the main altar. Outside, the
baroque Genovese façade
made from Carrara marble
is admired as one of the
province’s most beautiful
ones.

Agustinian Nuns made the
famous Almond Cake (“torta
de almendras”).

The Clock Tower
This building is famously know as
“El Arquillo de Reloj” being one
of the most important buildings
in Chiclana. It holds a public
building, built in the 18th Century,
it was originally part of the old
cathedral chapter. A religious value
was ascribed to the watch tower
because in the close-situated church
of San Juan Baptist, it lacked a bell
tower, because the construction
of the two bell towers were not
complete. It is built in four parts
from natural sea rock. The base of
two arches supports the main body
containing the clock mechanism.
Above this is the octagonal bell
tower, finally topped by a dome
with a Latin cross.
It is situated on the Plaza Mayor
and built beside the Iglesia de San
Juan Bautista monumental frame
which is very interesting for visitors.
Chapel of Saint Christ of Vera Cruz
It is the oldest temple in Chiclana (second part of the 16th
century). It serves as the ecclesiastical base for the oldest
brotherhood of cross bearers in religious processions in Andalucia,
represented in the picture of the Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz. It is
also ascribed to have
Mexican origins. A
legend is, during a time
of draught in Chiclana,
prayers said here were
answered with the
miracle of rain.
The simply formed
faÇade of the building
has undergone many
changes during its
history. The barred
hall and the huge cross
clearly stand out.

Church of Saint Telmus
This church was built in
1783 for the Augustinians
on the location of an earlier
church. Inside, deserving
a special mention are the
altarpiece and some paintings
like the Inmaculate of the
Mulatto (Inmaculada de
Mulato), as well as the image
of the Virgin of Remedy
(Virgen de los Remedios),
Chiclana’s patron saint. This
image was discovered in the
16th century. Outside is the
remarkable the angular, flat
and pointed belltower which
is an unusual concept.
Church of Saint Sebastian
It was built between the end of the 17th century and the beginning
of the 18th century, both periods of epidemics [San Sebastian is
the holy patron saint to protect against this]. The building has been
enlarged many times, thereby it is not possible to estimate the
original structure.
The last reforms were done in the 20th century and they have
given a neogothic picture to the building. On the altar the monument
of the ilustred Master Antonio Cabrera , an excellent speaker,
scientist and botanist, stands out.

Castle of Sancti Petri
This is known
without
question
as one of the
most emblematic
buildings in Chiclana,
built on an old
wall of the Roman
temple of Hercules,
very famous in
older times. At the
same location, the
Phoenician temple
of
the
equally
famous Melkart was
also built.
Today the remains
of military buildings
of the 18th century
and the lighthouse of the 16th century are on this old island. From La
Barrosa and Sancti Petri beach, the island´s outline is silhouetted in
the romantic sunset.
Due to its location and beautiful landscape, it is worthwhile going to the
recently restored castle by boat, the only way to get to the island. Boats
depart from the Sancti Petri marina.
There is also a wide range of environmental and cultural activities to enjoy.
Hermitage of Saint Anne
Dates from the secondhalf of the 18th century. It is one of
Chiclana’s most representative buildings because - due to its situation
overlooking the city - it can be seen from everywhere around. Its
structure is octagonal and surrounded by arcades. The inside houses
the image of Saint Anne and the Child Virgin (Virgen Niña) by
sculptor Domingo Giscardi (18th century). It only opens on Tuesday.

Popularly known as “John and
Joane” feast, it recreates with
irony and humour the events of
daily life of the city, afterwards
the figures are consumed by the
typical bonfires. On this night
delicious snails are served as a
traditional “tapa” at local bars.
With delicate wine fragrances
in the air, Chiclana’s people
celebrate this day by a flower
gift to the patron saint and
a long procession from San
Telmo Church. Traditional grape
stomping as an offering to the
Patron Saint.

Great street party with fabulous
fireworks from hermitage
viewpoint, a place in high spirits
that night. It is traditional to get a
sampling of “campanas de Santa
Ana” (regional pastry).

takes place in early December.
