NAMI El Paso Board President
October 1 st , 2014 marked the one year
anniversary of NAMI’s People Empower
El Paso (PEEP) program. The PEEP
program, funded by the Paso del Norte
Health Foundation, has enabled NAMI
to provide more NAMI signature programs in our community. In the past
year, NAMI El Paso provided 9 Family
to Family and 3 Basics classes to over 161
participants. Additionally, NAMI presented at 35 In Our Own Voice events to
over 900 individuals.
These are
astounding numbers.

Texas Affiliate of the year. Congratulations to NAMI of El Paso, its staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors. I invite
you to attend our annual meeting in
January to help us celebrate our accomplishments. Specific information about

El 1ero de octubre marcó el primer aniversario del programa de NAMI Empoderando a la Gente en El Paso. (PEEP en sus
siglas en inglés). Por medio de la Fundación de Salud de El Paso del Norte, se
han provisto más programas de NAMI en
nuestra comunidad. En este año, se impartieron 9 clases de Familia a Familia y
3 de Bases y Fundamentos a más de 161
participantes. Además, se presentó en 35
eventos En Nuestra Propia Voz a más de
900 individuos. Estos números son sobresalientes.
Aparte de estos programas, NAMI El Paso sigue activo por medio de foros comunitarios,
presentaciones, ferias de salud y la caminata
NAMI El Paso 2014. También continúa teniendo grupos de apoyo para las personas con
enfermedades mentales y sus familiares, en
inglés como en español.
Estimamos que NAMI El Paso ha alcanzado a
educar a más de 3,000 personas por medio de
sus estas actividades. Nuestros esfuerzos han
sido reconocidos. NAMI El Paso recibió el galardón de Afiliado NAMI del año 2014. Felicidades a NAMI El Paso, trabajadores, voluntarios y Mesa Directiva. Los invito a asistir a
nuestra reunión anual en enero próximo para
celebrar nuestros logros. Información especifica acerca de la reunión estará disponible próximamente.

Families Interested in Understanding
Their Loved Ones

Congratulations to
all October 2014
graduates of the Familia-a-Familia and Family-toFamily courses. Both started the 3 month journey in July
and ended in October. Many graduates describe the impact of this program as life changing and eye opening.
This program focuses on empathy, communication, selfcare, recovery and so much more.
NAMI Family-to-Family is taught by trained volunteers
who dedicate their time to selflessly help others in learning about mental illness from the Family member perspective. Thank you to Wendolyne Castillo, Amin Moya,
Ernest Harris and John Arriola for teaching the July cohort. NAMI El Paso is happy to report that 20 participants graduated from both courses. We are very thankful
to CIMA Hospice and Family Service of El Paso for graciously donating space to hold class.
Family-to-Family Graduation
El programa de Familia-a-Familia de NAMI es impartido por voluntarios
capacitados que desinteresadamente se dedican a ayudar a enseñar
sobre las enfermedades mentales desde la perspectiva de los familiares.
Queremos agradecer por su capacitación a los grupos de Julio: Wendolyne Castillo, Amin Moya, Ernest Harris y John Arriola. NAMI de El Paso se enorgullece en reportar que 20 personas se graduaron de estos

Basics Graduation
NAMI Basics is a six-session
course for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness, such
as depression, anxiety, or ADD/ADHD. It teaches parents
about the brain, how the brain works with medications,
how to take care of their child, their family, and most importantly, themselves. In addition, the parent learns about
what resources are available to them and how to navigate
systems in the community. NAMI El Paso is completing its
third and final class of 2014. However, if you are interested
in having your name on the list for the next class to begin in
2015, contact us.

Felicidades a todos los graduados de los cursos de Octubre del 2014
Familia-a-Familia y Family-to-Family. Ambos grupos se embarcaron en
esta aventura de 3 meses en Julio y culminaron en Octubre. Varios de
los graduados describieron el impacto de este programa como una experiencia que les cambio la vida y les quito la venda de los ojos. Este programa se enfoca en la empatía, comunicación, cuidado propio, recuperación
y mucho más.
Graduación De Familia-a-Familia
NAMI Bases y Fundamentos es una clase de seis sesiones
para padres y personas que cuidan de niños y adolescentes
con enfermedades mentales como depresión, ansiedad, déficit
de atención con hiperactividad (ADD/ADHD). Este curso informa a los padres sobre el cerebro y como es afectado por los
medicamento, como cuidador de su hijo (a), de su familia y,
más importante, de sí mismos. Además, los padres aprenden
sobre los recursos disponibles y como acensarlos en nuestra
comunidad. NAMI El Paso acaba culminó su tercera y última

In October, NAMI El Paso trained 12
new IOOV (In Our Own Voice) presenters to share their story of recovery
in El Paso. We now have 20 trained
presenters to do 60-90 minute presentations in our community. Please help
us welcome these newcomers to the
NAMI El Paso team!

Counting the good, moving past the bad

I was diagnosed hypo-manic bipolar several times. Although, I
was never officially diagnosed with ADHD nor OCD, I have exhibited the typical behaviors and characteristics since my teens:
Incredible inattentiveness in class and the ability to hyperfocus.
The combination proved to be incredibly tough to overcome and
caused a great deal of difficulty in maintaining my grades. The
impulsive nature to count everything made me quite a natural
mathematician, teaching myself to count binary before age ten. I
was lucky enough to have graduated from high school in 1995. I
attempted college but struggled until I had to leave.
I have tried my best to be part of the workforce but now, at 39
years old, I have had over 30 different employers. Even though I
have come to cope and manage well my ADHD and OCD, it has
been hard to find many who understand my work style.
I became an In Our Own Voice presenter in March 2014. It has
been a truly wonderful and rewarding experience. I have shared
my story with students at EPCC Valle Verde and UTEP, counselors and therapists at Family Services of El Paso and Alternatives
Centre For Behavioral Health and, my largest audience (135 people) was for parents and educators of children at an ADHD seminar hosted by Paso del Norte Children’s Development Center.
I give back to my community by raising awareness about mental
illness and the need to erase stereotypes and stigma forever. I
also want people to know that there is hope; mental illness is not
the end. As bad as I feel sometimes at having failed in the past as
a student and as a worker, I am reminded daily through the love
of a super supportive spectacular wife and two beautiful children
that I must go on, keep the fight, and never give up. I have traveled a path that has rewarded me with riches.
I am high functioning. I am happy. I am ME. There is hope for
you too!
Fui diagnosticado con hipomanía bipolar varias veces. Aunque
nunca oficialmente diagnosticado con Deficit de Atencion e Hiperactividad (ADHD), ni con Obsesivo-Compulsivo (OCD), he exhibido conductas y características típicas desde mi adolescencia:
Una falta de atención increíble en clase. y la capacidad de hiperconcentrarme. Esta combinación resultó ser difícil de superar y
dificultó que mantuviera buenas calificaciones. El impulso de contar en todo momento me convirtió en matemático natural, enseñándome a contar números binarios antes de los diez años. Tuve
la suerte de graduarme de la preparatoria en 1995. Intente asistir
a la universidad pero batallé hasta que me salí .
He intentado lo mejor posible el ser parte de la fuerza de trabajo
pero ahora, a los 39 años, he tenido más de 30 trabajos. Aunque
he llegado a enfrentar y manejar bien mi ADHD y OCD, ha sido
difícil encontrar quienes entiendan mi estilo de trabajo.
Me capacité como presentador de “En Nuestra Propia Voz” en
marzo del 2014. Ha sido una experiencia maravillosa y gratificante. He compartido mi historia con estudiantes de EPCC del campus de Valle Verde y de UTEP, con los consejeros y terapeutas
de Family Service of El Paso y del Alternatives Centre For Behavioral Health y con mi público más grande (135 personas) para el
seminario para los padres y educadores de niños con ADHD en
el Paso del Norte Children’s Development Center.
Regreso a mi comunidad por medio del despertar conciencia
sobre las enfermedades mentales y la necesidad de borrar estereotipos y el estigma para siempre. También quiero que los demás sepan que existe la esperanza; la enfermedad mental no es
el fin. Por más mal que me sienta en ocasiones de batallar como
estudiante y como trabajador, recuerdo diariamente por medio del
amor de una súper mujer que me apoya que es mi esposa y de
mis dos hijos que tengo que seguir adelante con mi lucha, y nunca darme por vencido. He recorrido un camino que me ha recompensado con riquezas.
Puedo funcionar al máximo. Yo feliz. Soy como soy. También hay
esperanza para ti!

An Advocate is Remembered

Jesus Sanchez was employed by Border TM Industries d.b.a.
Xceed Resources from April 17, 2003 until his untimely death
on October 8, 2014. Jesus “Chuy” came to Xceed Resources
after having worked with the Ysleta Independent School
District as a Truancy/Gang Intervention Specialist and Therapist Technician IV for El Paso Community MHMR Center,
now known as Emergence Health Network, and Opportunity Center, House Director/Counselor. His prior experience
with all these agencies prepared him to work as a Ground
Maintenance Supervisor for City Parks. Chuy had a way of
speaking to the employees and was able to make a connection because he had been there and he understood. Chuy
was called on to talk to employees that had been in serious
trouble in the past and were trying to get their life back in
order. He also had a soft side and was a good fit to later get
promoted to Production Manager. He had the “gift of gab”
and was able to procure new contracts with various companies in El Paso and was able to maintain these contracts and
keep the Assembly employees working year round. Chuy
also was a lead singer for a fifties band, Little Mike and the
Blue Kings. He had a great following and at his services, the
funeral home was Standing Room Only. He had recently
graduated from a Family-to-Family 12 week course.
Jesus Sanchez fue empleado por Border TM Industries,
conocido como Xceed Resources, de abril 17, 2003 hasta su inesperada muerte en octubre 8, 2014. Antes de
empezar su trabajo con Xceed Resources Jesus ‘Chuy’
había trabajado con el Distrito Escolar Independiente de
Ysleta como Especialista y Técnico Terapista IV para El
Paso MHMR, ahora conocido como Emergence Health
Network y fue Director de Vivienda y Consejero del Opportunity Center. La experiencia que adquirió con estas
agencias lo preparó para trabajar como Supervisor de
Mantenimiento de Suelo para City Parks. Chuy tenía una
manera especial de hablar con los empleados y podía
conectarse con ellos porque había sido uno de ellos y él
entendía. Le pedían a Chuy que hablara con los empleados que habían tenido serios problemas en el pasado y
quienes estaban tratando de poner de nuevo sus vidas
en orden. Él también tenía su lado amable y fue la persona precisa para luego ser promovido a Gerente de Producción. El tenía el ‘don de la palabra’ y procuraba nuevos contratos con varias compañías en El Paso, y podía
mantener estos contratos para que los empleados de
Ensamblaje pudieran trabajar por todo el año. Chuy
también era el cantante principal de la banda Little Mike
and Blue Kings de música de los 50’s. Él tenia muchos
admiradores y su servicio funeral fue muy concurrido.
Chuy se había graduado recientemente del curso de 12
semanas de Familia-a-Familia.

On November 8th, NAMI El Paso received the Affiliate of the Year Award at
the NAMI Texas 2014 Annual Conference. Ms. Patti Haynes, Education Consultant for NAMI Texas, nominated
NAMI El Paso for its outstanding work in
reaching out to the community through
NAMI’s Family-to-Family, In Our Own
Voice, and Basics Signature Programs. It
was noted that El Paso not only exceeded projections but that it is the only Affiliate that provides these services and programs in both English and Spanish. President Richard Salcido accepted the
award on behalf of NAMI El Paso staff,
board, volunteers, and members, while
acknowledging the partnership with
Family Services of El Paso, which helped
make this expansion possible.
El 8 de noviembre NAMI El Paso recibió el
Galardón de Afiliado del Año en la Convención Anual de NAMI Texas del 2014. Ms.
Patti Haynes, Consultora para Educación
de NAMI Texas, nominó a NAMI El Paso
por su excelente trabajo en llegar a la comunidad a través de los Programas Únicos
de NAMI de Familia a Familia, Igual a Igual
y Básicos. Se anoto que El Paso no solamente excedió las proyecciones pero que
es el único Afiliado que provee estos servicios y programas tanto en ingles como en
español. El Presidente Richard Salcido
