PRAYER OF THE WEEK
February 5, 2012, Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Keep your family safe, O Lord, with unfailing care,
that, relying solely on the hope of heavenly grace,
they may be defended always by your protection.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

My life is like the wind.
First Reading Background
In the Book of Job, God allows Satan to inflict all
kinds of suffering on Job.
Through it all, Job remains faithful to God.
The story of Job points out that the ways of God are
beyond human understanding.
Reading II: 1 Corinthians 9: 16-19, 22-23
I am all things for all people, for the sake of the Gospel.
Second Reading Background
The Corinthian community wants to reward Paul for
his ministry among them.
Paul stresses that God's love is freely given.
In today's passage, Paul preaches to the community
about God's generosity.
Gospel: Mark 1: 29-39
He went to a lonely place to pray.
Gospel Background
The stories of Jesus' miracles are a sign that the power
of Satan is broken and the kingdom of God has
arrived.
Jesus is the one who brings the kingdom of God to
earth.
In today's Gospel the miracles are signs of the
ultimate healing that Jesus will bring to the world.

Mi vida es un soplo.
Primera lectura
En el libro de Job, Dios permite que Satán cause todo

THE GOOD NEWS
Today’s readings begin with a few verses from the
book of Job. First, Job complains that his nights drag on
endlessly. Then, worse yet, “My days are swifter than a
weaver’s shuttle; / they come to an end without hope” (Job 7:6).
Not exactly encouraging, these lamentations, not when taken
alone.
Most of us have been there, though, and the antidote is
the “good news” that Paul found so compelling that “an
obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not
preach it!” (1 Corinthians 9:16). Paul felt driven to announce
the gospel to as many people as possible, “to save at least
some” (9:22).
This good news is the mystery of the life, death, and
resurrection of Jesus Christ, who lifted Simon Peter’s mother-in
-law from her sickbed with a mere touch of his hand. “The
whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were
sick with various diseases, and he drove out many
demons” (Mark 1:33–34)). Our woes and demons are as real as

LAS BUENAS NOTICIAS
Las lecturas de hoy comienzan con unos versos del
libro de Job. En primer lugar, Job se queja de que sus noches se
alargan indefinidamente. Y luego, aún peor, “Mis días corren
más aprisa que una lanzadera y se consumen sin esperanza” (Job
7:6). No son precisamente alentadoras estas lamentaciones, no
cuando se examinan por separado.
La mayoría de nosotros ha estado allí, sin embargo, y el
antídoto es la “buena noticia” que Pablo encontró tan convincente
que sentía que predicarla “era su obligación. ¡Ay de mí, si no
anuncio el Evangelio!” (1 Corintios 9:16). Pablo se sentía
impulsado a anunciar el Evangelio a tantos como fuera posible,
“para ganarlos a todos” (9:22).
Esta buena noticia era que el misterio de la vida,
muerte y Resurrección de Jesucristo, que levantó a la suegra de
Simón Pedro de su lecho de enferma con un simple toque de su
mano. “Todo el pueblo se apiñó junto a la puerta. Curó a
muchos enfermos de diversos males y expulsó a muchos
demonios” (Marcos 1:33–34). Nuestros males y demonios son
tan reales como los de Job, y Jesús es nuestro salvador.

Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
The Gospel of Mark, unlike those of Matthew and Luke,
has no infancy narrative, nor does it have a lengthy prologue to
introduce it, as John’s Gospel does. In Mark’s
account, one could say, Jesus hits the ground
running. The stories we’ve been hearing these
weeks come from the very first chapter of
Mark, and they show us the public ministry of
Jesus in its infancy. Today’s account shows
some of the strain or adjustment of his new
life of preaching the reign of God, healing the
sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after
sunset, when darkness ended the workday,
people brought the sick and possessed to
Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn
to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail.
Simon Peter and the others don’t just look for
him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor
that his ministry has incited. With the selfsacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells
his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is
also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our
purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming
the good news, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of
Christ to the world.
El Evangelio de Marcos, a diferencia de los de Mateo y Lucas, no
tiene ningún relato de la infancia, ni tampoco tiene un largo prólogo
para introducir, como el Evangelio de Juan lo
hace. En el relato de Marcos, se podría decir,
Jesús llega a la puesta en marcha previa. Las
historias que hemos escuchado estas semanas
vienen del primer capítulo de Marcos, y nos
muestran el ministerio público de Jesús en su
infancia. Cuenta hoy en día muestra algo de la
tensión o el ajuste de su nueva vida de la
predicación del reino de Dios, sanar a los
enfermos y echar fuera demonios. Tenga en

que este es nuestro propósito, nuestra vocación: ser incansable en la

reconciliación toque de Cristo a los mundo.
FROM SLAVE TO STEWARD
DE ESCLAVO A ADMINISTRADOR
Job and Paul offer us two completely different views of
slavery. What Job describes is an involuntary slavery, the relentless
tyranny of a life lived merely eking out an existence, struggling just
to get by. An enormous percentage of the world’s population lives
in this manner, including some citizens of the United States. They
may not be the actual property of other human beings (the way we
usually think of slavery), but their every daily effort is “owned” by
their labor, just to sustain their existence. Paul also speaks of
slavery, but a voluntary slavery; he has willingly committed
himself to be a “slave” owned entirely by the gospel. He also
speaks of this as stewardship, his caretaking of the great gift and
blessing that has been given to him. Peter’s mother-in-law shows
true stewardship of the blessing she has received from Christ in her
restored health: she expresses her gratitude in service to others. Far
from being an example of an oppressed, powerless, servile person,
she is a shining example of the Christian vocation of using one’s
grace and blessings, whatever they may be, in willing service of
others.
Job y San Pablo nos ofrecen dos puntos de vista
completamente diferentes sobre la esclavitud. Lo que Job describe es
una esclavitud involuntaria, la implacable tiranía de una vida vivida
meramente ganándose a duras penas la existencia, luchando sólo para
sobrevivir. Un enorme porcentaje de la población del mundo vive así,
incluyendo algunos ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos. Puede que en
realidad no sean propiedad de otros seres humanos (nuestro usual
concepto de esclavitud), pero su esfuerzo diario es “poseído” por su
trabajo, que apenas cubre su subsistencia. San Pablo también habla de
la esclavitud, mas de una esclavitud voluntaria; él se comprometió de
buena gana a ser un “esclavo” totalmente poseído por el Evangelio.

dedicación al gran don y bendición que le han sido dados. La suegra

FROM STEWARD TO SERVANT

This, as Jesus says, is the purpose for which we have
become members of his Body in baptism. This is our vocation: to
be living signs of the reign of God breaking into the world in our
self-giving sacrifice. A modern-day example: One family was
going to purchase a new vehicle. They found one they wanted, but
realized that it exceeded what they truly needed, as it had a number
of extra luxuries. So they purchased a more basic vehicle that met
their needs, and used the difference in price (about a thousand
dollars) to pay for the digging of a fresh-water well for a village in
Africa. For the first time, village girls could attend school rather
than spend a whole day carrying water from the nearest well. And
the village was able to move beyond mere subsistence farming,
having marketable produce. How has God blessed you? No matter
how, or to what degree, there is some way that, in self-giving
service, your vocation in Christ can be fulfilled. For what purpose
have you come into the world?

convertido en miembros de su Cuerpo en el bautismo. Esta es nuestra
vocación: ser signos vivientes del Reino de Dios irrumpiendo en el

querían, pero se dieron cuenta de que excedía lo que en verdad
necesitaban, ya que tenía varios lujos extra. Así es que compraron un
vehículo más básico que cubría sus necesidades, y emplearon la
diferencia en el precio (cerca de mil dólares) para pagar por la
excavación de un pozo de agua fresca para una aldea en África. Por
primera vez, las niñas de la aldea podrían asistir a la escuela en vez de
pasarse el día acarreando agua desde el pozo más cercano. Y toda la
aldea pudo pasar de una agricultura de subsistencia a tener productos

RCIA INQUIRY SESSION
RCIA Inquiry Sessions have ended and will begin
again in August 2012. We are presently in the
Catechumenate preparing for the
Sacraments of Initiation. If anyone
is interested in studying about the
Catholic Faith they may register
with Sr. Dolores. The next Inquiry sessions will begin in the
Fall. ADULT CONFIRMATION PREPARATION
Adult Confirmation Sessions are taking
place twice a month. Presently registration
for these classes is closed. Any adult who is
interested in receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation may

Upcoming Cursillo Ultreya and Cursillo Retreats

Because of your good stewardship of treasure, and that of many of
your fellow parishioners, our Parish Campaign has been a resounding
success. The 2011 goal for the parish was $31,500; we received
$69,013 in pledges and collected $53,443 toward those pledges. All
monies received over our goal came back to the parish resulting in over
$21,000 back to the parish and our parish ministries.

Parish Information

♦ Parish Registration: In order that we may better serve you,
please register in the parish. This way you are known to us when
requesting the services of the church. Registration forms are
available in the literature rack in the vestibule on the parish web
site or at the pastoral office. Also, please notify the parish office of
changes of address, phone, or e-mail, or if you are moving out of
the area. Changes can be emailed to [email protected] or simply drop a note in the collection basket.
♦ Baptism: Baptisms for infants to six year olds are celebrated at
Sacred Heart Church. Preparation for baptism should begin at least
two months prior to the desired date. The child’s birth certificate
and registration fee is required when registering your child for
baptism. Parents & Godparents must attend a pre-baptism class
and you may sign up for the class at registration time. All Baptism
Classes are held in the hall at St. Benedict Church on Saturdays at
2:00pm (arrive early to check in) and we kindly ask that you leave
little ones with a caregiver. As a courtesy to those in attendance,
doors will be closed at when class begins and all late arrivals will
be rescheduled. A baptism date can be set after registration and

♦ Marriage: Couples planning marriage should contact the parish
as soon as they become engaged or at least nine months prior to
desired marriage date in order to fulfill necessary marriage
preparation requirements. Contact Natalie Velazquez (831) 6379212 to begin paperwork and to set up an appointment with
one of the priests.
♦ Anointing of the Sick: Often, you may be able to arrange an
anointing by speaking with a priest after a mass. Please call the
parish office if you need to receive the anointing of the sick at
home. In emergency situations when the office is closed, the
answering service will relay the information to one of the priests.
In case of hospitalization, let the hospital staff know that you would
like to have a Catholic priest see you and they will relay the
message to the parish office.
♦ Holy Communion to the Sick: If you are at home, please
contact Sr. Catherine Lockshire (831) 637-9212 ext. 127 and she
will arrange an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion to visit
you. In case of hospitalization, inform the hospital staff that you
are a Catholic and would like to receive Holy Communion and they
will relay the message to the parish office.
♦ Mass Intentions: Mass requests are scheduled through the
parish office during office hours up to 11 months in advance.
There is a $10.00 mass stipend to request a mass.
♦ Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament is celebrated at Sacred Heart Church every
Wednesday from 7:00am to 9:00pm and on Sundays from 1:00pm
to 3:00pm.
♦ Funerals: In the event of the death of a loved one, the
mortuary will generally assist you in making some of the funeral
arrangements as well as contact us to confirm date and time of
funeral. Please contact the parish office to speak to the priest
about particulars of the funeral service itself.
♦ House Blessings: please, contact the parish priest personally
or call the parish office to make an appointment.
♦ Car Blessings: The priest is usually available to bless your new
car after Masses (weekday and weekend).
♦ Registración parroquial: para servirles mejor, por favor,
