Parent/Teacher Conferences
Fall conference dates are Wednesday, October
24, from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and Thursday, October 25th, from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. Please plan
to attend at you designated time so we can share
your child’s work with you. Our goal is 100% participation from parents. The number one factor
in school success is parent involvement in education. If for some reason you cannot attend at
your scheduled conference time, please call the
office to reschedule with your child’s teacher.

Hi! My name is Kirsten Peterson and I’m the new music teacher at DIA. I am
so excited to be here at DIA!
This year in music, we will be working on instrument skills, as well as music
theory and terminology. One of my passions is the different musical eras, so
we will learn quite a bit about them too. We will also prepare programs for
the students to share with their families and our community. It should be a
challenging year, but a lot of fun.
Just a bit about myself: I went to Regis University and graduated with a degree in Music Education. I play piano and viola, and I love to sing. I grew up
in Grand Junction and I’m happy to be back in District 51.

Fourth Graders enjoyed two spectacular day trips to Vega State Park and the Colorado
National Monument in September. At Vega State Park on the Mesa students hiked through several life zones with Ranger Travis, and observed and discussed the different types of vegetation
at various altitudes. We sketched, reflected and wrote in our science notebooks about our observations. We also enjoyed a presentation about animals on the Mesa by Mrs. Helen Spence, the
naturalist at Vega State Park. This trip was significant for our students because it served as an
introduction to our science unit: Life Zones of Colorado. Although students are learning science
in Spanish, we were able to use this trip as a powerful background experience for all of our students. The experience the students had matters the most and they can write about it and remember it in either language! We are continuing to use this field trip experience to enhance our
studies of life zones and animals in Colorado.
Also in September we were fortunate enough to receive a transportation scholarship from the
Colorado National Monument to study fossils and habitats of living things at the semi-arid desert
life zone. We worked with Rangers Briana Board and Annie Runde to dig for fossils in a simulated
quarry, hike the Alcove and Canyon Rim trails and discuss living things and their habitats. Students identified a “big science question” before the trip and had the job of getting an answer to
their question by the end of the trip! Although students learned about fossils in Spanish, they had
no problems transferring what they learned in Spanish with Maestra Barnes into English oral and
written language with Mrs. Rewold.
We were so proud of our bilingual
students!
We also want to say a big GRACIAS to
our parent volunteers who helped us
make our trips so meaningful. We
love our parent volunteers!

Bilingualism–
When learning a second language it is very important to give the
student an opportunity to repeat words. That way they will have the
opportunity to repeat words and hear them. That is why it is important to practice, practice at home.

us to send you instant school related cell phone messages.
We are very excited to start using this system and better our communication with our DIA parents in the near future. We do ask from you
to please keep us updated with your current phone numbers.
Some examples of how you can help DIA or in the

classroom.
Be a Teacher for the classroom “Art Heritage” or expert for a

Estimadas familias de DIA,
¡Hola! Mi nombre es Kirsten Peterson y yo soy la nueva maestra de
música de DIA. Estoy muy emocionada de estar aquí en DIA.
Este año en música estaremos trabajando es habilidades instrumentales, así
como también en teoría de la música y terminología. Una de mis pasiones son
las diferentes eras de la música, así que aprenderemos bastante acerca de
ellas. Además también prepararemos programas para los estudiantes para
compartir con sus familias y la comunidad. Será un año con muchos retos,
pero muy divertido.
Un poco acerca de mi: Fuí a la Universidad de Regis y me gradué en Educación de la Música. Toco el piano y la viola, y amo cantar. Crecí en Grand Junction y estoy muy contenta de haber regresado al Distrito 51. Si tiene alguna

Los estudiantes de 4to disfrutaron de dos paseos espectaculares a Vega State Park y Colorado National Monument en Septiembre. En Vega State Park en Mesa, los estudiantes caminaron
por varias zonas de vida con Ranger Travis, y observaron y discutieron los diferentes tipos de vegetación en varias altitudes. Dibujamos, reflejamos, y escribimos en nuestros libros de ciencia nuestras
observaciones. Disfrutamos de una presentación de animales en Mesa presentado por Mrs. Helen
Spence, la naturalista de Vega State Park. Este viaje fué significante para nuestros estudiantes porque sirvió como introducción a nuestra unidad de ciencia: Zonas de Vida de Colorado. Como nuestros estudiantes están aprendiendo ciencia en español, pudimos usar este viaje como una experiencia poderosa para nuestros estudiantes. ¡La experiencia que los estudiantes tuvieron es lo que importa y la pueden escribir y acordarse en los dos idiomas! Continuaremos a usar la experiencia de
este viaje para mejorar nuestros estudios de las zonas de vida y animales en Colorado.
En Septiembre fuimos afortunados, recibimos una beca de transportación por el Monumento de
Colorado para estudiar fósiles y habitantes de las zonas de vida del semi-arido desierto. Trabajamos
con Rangers Briana Board y Annie Runde a excavar fósiles en cantera simulada, caminamos el Alcove y Canyon Rim y discutimos las cosas vivas y sus habitantes. ¡Antes del viaje los estudiantes identificaron una “pregunta grande de ciencia” y su trabajo era responderla antes que termináramos el
viaje! Aunque los estudiantes aprendieron de fósiles en español, no tuvieron problemas transfiriendo lo que aprendieron en español con la Maestra Barnes a inglés oral y escrito con Mrs. Rewold.
¡Estamos muy orgullosas de nuestros estudiantes bilingües!
También queremos darle las GRACIAS a nuestros padres voluntarios que ayudaron que nuestros
viajes fueran significativos.

SER VOLUNTARIO
Involucrarse en la escuela de su pequeño/a y ser
voluntario apoyará no solamente a los estudiantes a
tener éxito, sino también al éxito de nuestra comunidad.

BilingüismoEn el aprendizaje de una segunda lengua es muy importante dar al estudiante muchas oportunidades de repetición de las palabras. Por eso es
importante que en casa también practiquen y practiquen. Así se da más
la oportunidad de repetición de palabras, tanto para escuchar como para
hablar.
DE LA OFICINA
Synervoice en DIA. Synervoice es una herramienta computarizada
que nos permitirá mandarles mensajes de asuntos escolares a su celular
en un instante. Estamos muy emocionados de comenzar a usar este sistema y mejorar la comunicación con nuestros papás de DIA en un futuro no
muy lejano. Les pedimos de favor que nos mantengan actualizados con
sus números de teléfono. Gracias
No olviden traer sus chamarras, si su hijo/a no
trae una chamarra gruesa
no podrá jugar afuera.
También no olviden ponerles el nombre
a la ropa y Pelotas que traigan a la escuela. Recuerden, no permitimos juguetes a la escuela como carritos, monas,
libros de colores, teléfonos, ya que son
una distracción en el salón.
Algunos ejemplos de como puede ayudar a su
escuela DIA o en clase son:
Ser Chaperones para paseos escolares
Ser Organizador o ayudar a planear eventos escolares
o de salón.
Ser maestro de la clase “Herencia del Arte” o experto
por un día.
Ser partícipe activo en nuestras juntas y actividades
de P.T.A (Asociación de Padres)
Llevar materiales a casa para cortar y organizar
Las opciones para ser voluntario no tienen límites.

**No olvide entregar su aplicación de voluntario**
Gabinete de la cocina
Si no a entregado su aplicación de comida gratis o reducida el estado de
su hijo/a ha cambiado desde el 2 de Octubre, 2012. Esto quiere decir que
si tenía comida gratis o reducida temporal su estado cambio a cobro completo. Leche que se compra adicionalmente cuesta .65, sin tener en cuenta la elegibilidad de la comida de su hijo/a. Puede someter su aplicación para comida gratis o reducida en cualquier momento durante el año escolar. Los estudiantes
pueden cobrar hasta $10.00 dólares. Después de que lleguen a los $10.00 se les dará una comida consistiendo de
un sándwich, fruta, y leche. Esperamos y sus hijos disfruten de la nueva comida que se ofrecerá este año, y de
todas las frutas y ensaladas frescas cada día.
La Oficina de SaludOcasionalmente los estudiantes necesitan un cambio
de ropa por “accidentes”, les
caí agua o leche, se caen en
lodo, etc. Seria una Buena
idea poner ropa limpia en la mochila
de su hijo/a para estas emergencias.
Hablaremos a casa si su hijo/a necesita
ropa.
