FAITH AND THE JUBILEE YEAR
 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
Pope Francis, the Pastor of the Universal Church, has asked that the upcoming Extraordinary Jubilee of
Mercy (8 December 2015 – 20 November 2016) “be linked, first and foremost, to the Sacrament of
Reconciliation and to the celebration of the Holy Eucharist with a reflection on mercy.” With those
intentions in mind, I am happy to announce that during the Jubilee, in addition to our regular Massschedule, the Holy Eucharist will be celebrated on the First Sunday of the Month (First Sunday Works of
Mercy) at 5:00 P.M. Furthermore, the opportunity to confess sins with a contrite heart and a firm purpose
of amendment will not only be available every Saturday from 1:30 P.M. – 2:30 P.M. and by appointment as
it currently is, but an additional hour of mercy will be offered for Confession every Friday from 4:00 P.M.
– 5:00 P.M. It is my hope that many will come home for these Sacraments and in the words of Pope
Francis: “obtain the true and generous forgiveness of the Father Who renews all with His Presence.”
The Real Presence of God we know as Catholics, remains with us always, even until the
end of the age (cf. Saint Matthew XXVIII:20). That is why during the Holy Season of Lent,
on Holy Thursday, members of various groups associated with Our Holy Redeemer, after
celebrating the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, spend one hour with Him in the Most Blessed
Sacrament until He is “taken away” from us at Midnight. That hour is what He looked for
from Saints Peter, John, and James when after the Last Supper, He took them into the
Garden of Gethsemane. It is an hour that invites us to watch and pray (cf. Saint Luke
XXII).
As the Pastor of this local church in Freeport, I am asking you to please make a
commitment to “spend one hour with Him” outside of Mass every week by
coming to our Perpetual Adoration Chapel.
“Your commitment to your
Perpetual Adoration Chapel” (wrote Bishop Murphy on 6 January 2003 in
commemoration of our Parish’s one hundredth anniversary) “is a testimony to
the belief that all your activities as a parish flow from your life of prayer.” So it
was in 2003; so it is now in 2015; and so it will be during the upcoming Jubilee
Year (8 December 2015 – 20 November 2016) and beyond!
Please use today’s bulletin to select “a day of the week” and “a time of the day” when
you can come home to “watch and pray” with Our Holy Redeemer in our Perpetual
Adoration Chapel. It is my hope to have at least three people watching and praying
every hour of the day; every day of the week, throughout the Holy Year (8 December
2015 – 20 November 2016). With your one hour in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel, and
our additional hours of Confessional Mercy and Holy Mass, together we will help – in the
words of Pope Francis – “enable the celebration of the Holy Year to be for all believers a
true moment of encounter with the mercy of God … a living experience of the closeness
of the Father … a genuine experience of God’s mercy.”
In Union with Mary, Our Mother of Mercy,
Father Arcoleo
MY TIME WITH HIM IN

Yes, I will “spend one hour with Him” in our Perpetual Adoration Chapel. I have indicated below
when I commit myself to “watch and pray”.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
15 NOVEMBER 2015
Live from … Freeport, it’s the Pastor!
“Turned on and Tuned in to What Makes a Nation Great”
On Saturday, 7 November 2015, millions of people turned on their
televisions and tuned in to the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) for
its weekly presentation of Saturday Night Live (SNL). There is nothing
necessarily unusual about that occurrence. In fact, it has taken place
every Saturday night from October to May for the past forty years. What
made this week’s airing of SNL so “attractive” was its guest host: Mr.
Donald Trump, whose presence in Studio 8H drew more attention than
did the issues of his political campaign; issues which really aren’t a
laughing matter.
Yours truly didn’t tune in to SNL on 7 November 2015. “Been there, done
that” as the saying goes. However, since “the Donald” is in the spotlight, it is fitting that a Pastor make
mention of the event; especially when he considers that members of the flock entrusted to his care probably
did turn on the television and tune in to the program.
Prior to his entry into the race for the Republican Committee nomination for President of the United States
of America, Donald Trump was most associated (in certain circles) with gambling casinos in Atlantic City, New
Jersey; a television program called The Apprentice on NBC, or a golf course in Ferry Point, New York. But
now, because of his use (or abuse) of “Freedom of Speech”, his name has become associated with Mexico
and China, O’Donnell and Kelley, Weiner and Ramos, and “Live from New York …”
For the purposes of this Message from the Pastor, the name “Donald Trump” surfaces because, whether you
agree or not with what Mr. Trump has to say (and perhaps just disagree with the way he says it), whether
you are a member of the Republican Party or not, anyone and everyone who considers themselves an
“American” cannot help but agree with his slogan: Make America Great
Again! And he says “again” because the America that we are living in
today (the America where the Bible is on the forbidden book list in Public
Schools and teachers are forbidden to teach from It. The America where
Christmas can be celebrated only if you take Christ out of Christmas. The
America where more attention is given to saving the planet than to saving
the unborn child. The America where God is taken out of the Pledge of
Allegiance.) is an America that is “foreign” to the one nation, under God,
that our Founding Fathers broke from Great Britain to establish with
liberty and justice for all!
It is by “appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world” as did our Founding
Fathers to make America, that we the people can make America great
again! In other words: turn on the prayer and tune in to God!

The Family - 22. Celebration
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good Morning!
Today we open a short series of reflections on the three dimensions that articulate, so to speak, the rhythm
of family life: celebration, work, prayer.
Let’s begin with celebration. Today we will speak about celebration. And let’s say straight away that
celebration is the invention of God. Let us recall the conclusion of the story of Creation in the Book of
Genesis, which we have heard: “And on the seventh day God finished His work which He had done, and He
rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. So God blessed the seventh day and
hallowed it, because on it God rested from all His work which He had done in creation” (2:2-3). God Himself
teaches us the importance of dedicating time to contemplate and enjoy what has been done well in work. I
speak of work, naturally, not only in the sense of employment and profession, but in the broader sense:
every action by which we as men and women cooperate in God’s creative work.
Thus, celebration is not lazily lounging in an armchair, or the euphoria of foolish escape. No, celebration is
first and foremost a loving and grateful look at work well done; we celebrate work. You too, newlyweds, are
celebrating the work of a fine period of engagement: and this is beautiful! It is the time to look at your
children, or grandchildren, who are growing up, and to think: how beautiful! It’s the time to look at our
home, the friends we host, the community that surrounds us, and to think: what a good thing! God did this
when He created the world. And He does so again and again, because God is always creating, even at this
moment!
It may happen that a celebration occurs in difficult or sorrowful circumstances, and perhaps we celebrate
“with a lump in our throat”. Yet, even in these cases, we ask God for the strength not to empty it
completely. You mothers and fathers really understand this: how many times, for love of your children, you
are able to swallow your sorrows so as to let them enjoy the celebration, to savour the good taste of life!
There is so much love in this!
In the workplace too, at times — without neglecting our duties — we are able to let “infiltrate” a glint of
celebration: a birthday, a wedding, a birth, just as a farewell or a new arrival..., it’s important. It’s important
to celebrate. These are family moments in the inner workings of the productive machinery: it does us good!
A true moment of celebration brings work to a pause, and it is sacred, because it reminds men and women
that they are made in the image of God, who is not a slave to work, but its Lord, and thus we too must never
be slaves to work, but its “lords”. There is a commandment about this, a commandment which concerns
everyone, without exception! Yet we know that there are millions of men and women and even children
who are slaves to labour! At this time there are slaves, they are exploited, slaves to labour and this is against
God and against the dignity of the human person! The obsession with economic profit and technical hyperefficiency put the human rhythms of life at risk, for life has its human rhythms. The time for rest, especially
on Sunday, is ordained for us so that we can enjoy what is not produced and not consumed, not bought and
not sold. Instead we see that the ideology of profit and consumerism even wants to feed on celebration: it
too is sometimes reduced to a “business”, to a way of making and spending money. But is this what we are
working for? The greed of consumerism, which leads to waste, is an ugly virus which, among other things,
makes us end up even more tired than before. It harms true labour and consumes life. Irregular rhythms of
celebration often make victims of the young.
Ultimately, the time for celebration is sacred because God is there in a special way. Sunday Eucharist brings
to the celebration every grace of Jesus Christ: His presence, His love, His sacrifice, His forming us into a
community, His being with us.... And like this every reality receives its full meaning: work, family, the joys
and trials of each day, even suffering and death; everything becomes transfigured by the grace of Christ.
The family is endowed with an extraordinary ability to understand, guide and sustain the authentic value of
the time for celebration. How beautiful family celebrations are, they are beautiful! Sunday celebrations in
particular. It is surely no coincidence that celebrations which have room for the whole family are those that
turn out the best!
Family life itself, regarded through the eyes of faith, looks better to us than the toils that cost us. It looks to
us like a masterpiece of simplicity, beautiful precisely because it is not artificial, not false, but able to
incorporate within itself all aspects of real life. It looks to us like something “very good”, as God says at the
completion of the creation of man and woman (cf. Gen 1:31). Thus, celebration is a precious gift of God; a
precious gift that God gave to the human family: let’s not spoil it!

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
Today’s Gospel is viewed by many as part of the signs for the end of the world. (See Mark
13:24-32.) However, we must bear in mind that the expression “end of the world” sintelia
kosmos does not appear in the original Greek text of The New Testament. The expression we
find in these passages is always sintelia aionios. This expression means “end of the age.” In
this passage Jesus was talking about the destruction of the city of Jerusalem and its temple,
and therefore, of the end of the Jewish age which turned around the Jewish temple at
Jerusalem. As we peruse the history of man in the last two thousand years and what is
happening on this third millennium we can see that mankind has witnessed the end of many
ages. Each one of them calls us to be ready for the judgment attached to that end.
Ultimately, we are all called to be ready for our own judgment, when we ourselves will face
God. We all want to be judged favorably by Him. One way of accomplishing this is to follow the Blessed Virgin
Mary’s instruction: “Do whatever He tells you.”

 REMEMBERING THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED 
“In Lieu of Flowers …
… please send donations to Our Holy Redeemer!”
The Month of November, dedicated as it is to all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, is a perfect time to remember those
who have gone before us marked with the sign of Faith. Here at Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport, as in other
parishes throughout the world, that remembrance takes place during an annual nine-day Novena of Masses that
begins on the Feast of All Souls/2 November. And while this year’s Novena has come to an end, it will still be a
holy and pious thing to prayerfully remember the faithful departed, in as much as we have the Resurrection of the
Dead in view, and the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in Godliness. (cf. II Maccabees
xii:43-46).
Time and time again when reading the published remembrances/obituaries of parishioners from Our Holy
Redeemer, I come across the words: “In lieu of flowers, please send donations to …” What often follows those
words are words just as varied as the obituaries themselves, or rather, words just as varied as the lives of the
people about whom the obituaries were written.
The deceased person was a member of the United States Armed Forces and so the family asks: in lieu of flowers
please send donations to “the Wounded Warrior Project”. The deceased person suffered from an addiction to
alcohol and so the family asks: in lieu of flowers please send donations to “Alcoholics Anonymous”. The
deceased person …
Increasingly over the years I have been struck by the following words: “… please send donations to Our Holy
Redeemer”. And why have those words followed “in lieu of flowers”? The reasons are just as varied as the
people in whose memory the donations are sent: my mother fed the hungry at Parish Human Services, my
brother taught the children in Parish Religious Education, my father served as an Usher at Mass, my aunt received
all of her Sacraments at Our Holy Redeemer, my dad went to Our Holy Redeemer School, my husband loved
going to Mass at Our Holy Redeemer, …
If you would like to make a donation to Our Holy Redeemer in memory of your beloved deceased, please know
that there are many personalized ways to do so; below are featured a few of them for your consideration. If you
are interested in any of them, please contact the Rectory at (516) 378 – 0665. And while such remembrances
cannot bring our loved ones back home to Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport, prayerful remembrances can help
bring our loved ones home to Our Holy Redeemer in Heaven!

He indicado abajo las

(Benedicto XVI, Caritatis in Veritate).

Heridas (I)

COMING AGAIN
WITH GREAT
GLORY
Jesus said to His disciples,
“In those days after that
tribulation the sun will be
darkened, and the moon
will not give its light, and
the stars will be falling
from the sky, and the
powers in the heavens will
be shaken. And they will
see ‘the Son of Man coming
in the clouds’ with great
power and glory, and then
He will send out the angels
and gather His elect from
the four winds, from the
end of the earth to the
end of the sky.”
Saint Mark XIII: 24-27
