Unit 8: Winter
PEP Talk is a newsletter that links learning experiences at school with home. It is one way that
Parents and Educators Partner and talk about needs, expectations, and instruction. If you want to

Throughout this unit, your children
will learn about the season of winter.
We will discuss winter weather
and types of winter clothes. We
will talk about what happens
to plants in winter and what
changes animals make for
winter. We also will introduce
many winter activities and
celebrations.
Literacy and Math Skills
Every day your children will learn new
vocabulary words and use them to express
ideas. They will listen to stories, discuss the
big ideas, and practice numeracy skills. In
this unit, children will begin to—
• make personal connections to a story.
• ask and answer open-ended questions.

Connect Learning
at School and Home
Families can encourage early language,
literacy, and numeracy development by—
• reading and discussing stories with
their child.
• asking children open-ended questions
about stories.
• asking children to point out and name
shapes they see all around them.
Here is one of the Fingerplays we learn in
Winter that you and your child may enjoy
together.
Five Little Snowmen
(Begin with five fingers in the air.
Put one finger down each time a
snowman melts.)
Five little snowmen outside my door;
One melts away; then there are four.
Four little snowmen playing with me;
One melts away; then there are three.
Three little snowmen playing with you;
One melts away; then there are two.
Two little snowmen playing in the sun;
One melts away; then there is one.
One little snowman when the day is
done;
He melts away; then there are none.

Conectar el aprendizaje

Las familias pueden estimular el aprendizaje
temprano de la lectoescritura y el desarrollo
de los conocimentos numéricos:
• leyendo y comentando cuentos con su
niño.
• haciendo preguntas de respuesta abierta
a los niños sobre los cuentos.
• pidiendo a los niños que señalen y
nombren las formas que ven a su
alrededor.
