FIESTAS DE CAMPO, SABOR
A PRIMAVERA
El “homenaje de la ciudad al campo” que
Oviedo brinda con las fiestas y la feria de La
Ascensión, declaradas de interés turístico,
se celebran entre los días 10 y 12 de mayo,
en distintos escenarios urbanos y con tal variedad de actividades que las convierten en
la mayor muestra etnográfica de Asturias.
La feria ofrecerá en La Losa y el casco antiguo una veintena de exposiciones dedicadas a los productos agrícolas y la tradición gastronómica, el folclore y el deporte autóctono, la
artesanía popular, e incluso a otros concejos asturianos de especial
raigambre rural, así como el Concurso de Escanciadores de sidra, que
ya alcanza su decimoquinta edición.
Al término del Mercado de Ganado y la exhibición de maquinaria agrícola que tendrá lugar el domingo 12 de mayo en el recinto ganadero
del vecino municipio de Llanera, se procederá al reparto del bollo y el
vino en la Plaza de España de la capital asturiana. Una oportunidad
para degustar los productos tradicionales y también los más innovadores, ya que la feria de la Ascensión coincide con el VIII Campeonato
de Pinchos de Oviedo, organizado por el Ayuntamiento de la ciudad y
Hostelería de Asturias, en el que participan más de un centenar de
establecimientos. La Ascensión tiene además un menú gastronómico
propio: Menestra de temporada, carne gobernada y tarta de cerezas.
En La Ascensión se rinde además homenaje al “Paisano” y “Paisana”
del año y a personas y entidades que destacan por su dedicación al
campo asturiano.
Este año, también la fiesta local del Martes de Campo se celebra dentro del mes de mayo. La fiesta, que nació de una “gira” de la antiquísima Cofradía de La Balesquida, cofradía de “alfayates” o sastres
creada con el legado de Doña Velasquita Giraldez, se inicia el martes
día 14 con la lectura del pregón y tiene su continuación con el triduo
y la procesión de la imagen de Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza. El
“Martes de Campo” o “Martes del bollo”, que anuncia un tradicional
heraldo, se celebra el martes 21 de mayo cuando se reparten bollos
preñaos y botellas de vino en el Campo San Francisco, en un festejo al
que se suman miles de ovetenses que ese día comen en los parques y
zonas verdes de la ciudad y del Naranco.

TASTE OF SPRING
The “city’s homage to the countryside” that Oviedo celebrates
with the fiestas and The Ascension fair, declared tourist interest
events, are held between the 10th and 12th of May, in various urban
locations and with such a variety of activities that they become the
largest ethnographic events in Asturias.
In La Losa and in the old town the fair will offer over twenty
exhibitions about agricultural products and the gastronomic
traditions, the folklore and local sport, artisan works and even other
Asturian meetings especially rooted in the rural areas, as well as
the cider Concurso de Escanciadores (Waiter Competition) , now in
its fifteenth edition.
At the end of the Livestock Market and the agricultural machinery
exhibition that will take place on Sunday the 12th of May in
the livestock area in the neighbouring municipality of Llanera,
pancakes/pastries and wine will be given out in the Asturian
capital’s Plaza de España. A chance to taste the traditional products
and the most innovative ones as the Ascension fair coincides with
the VIII Campeonato de Pinchos de Oviedo ( titbit competition),
organised by the City Hall and Asturias Hospitality, with over a
hundred establishments participating. The Ascension also has its
own gastronomic menu: Minestrone of the season, beef in white
wine sauce and cherry pie. The Ascension also homages the
“Paisano” and the “Paisana” (country folk) of the year as well as
people and entities that stand out for their dedication to the Asturian
countryside.
This year, the local Tuesday in the Country fiesta will be held in May.
The fiesta, which is fruit of a “tour” given by the ancient Cofradía de
La Balesquida, “alfayates” or tailors’ guild created with the legacy
of Mrs Velasquita Giraldez, starts on the 14th with the reading of
the opening proclamation and then goes on to the triduum and the
procession of the image of Our Lady of Hope. The “Tuesday in the
Country” or “Pancake Tuesday”, announced by a traditional town
crier, is held on Tuesday the 21st of May when pastries and bottles
of wine are given out in the Campo San Francisco, in a party attended
by thousands of Oviedo people who this day eat in the parks and
green zones in the city and the Naranco.

ZARZUELA Y DANZA SE TURNAN
EN EL CAMPOAMOR
Entre mayo y junio, las funciones del Festival de Danza se entremezclan en la cartelera del Teatro Campoamor de Oviedo con las del
Festival de Zarzuela que en esta XX edición ofrecerá aún un título más:
“El gato montés”, una producción del Teatro de la Zarzuela de Madrid,
dirigida por José Carlos Plaza, con coreografía de la bailaora flamenca Cristina Hoyos y que ha sido galardonada en los Premios Líricos
Teatro Campoamor como la mejor producción de Ópera o Zarzuela de
la última temporada. El festival de Zarzuela se cerrará con un Recital
de romanzas, coros y preludios, a cargo de Oviedo Filarmonía, la soprano Elisandra Melián y la Capilla Polifónica “Ciudad de Oviedo”.
Desde principios de mayo, el coliseo ovetense ofrecerá la segunda mitad del Festival de Danza. El Ballet de la Ópera Nacional de Burdeos
ofrecerá dos funciones; una, con la coreografía “Chopin Número Uno”
y “Carmina burana” y otra, con “Apollon” y “Who cares?”
A finales de mes, otra compañía francesa, el Ballet Nacional de
Marsella subirá al escenario del Campoamor “Titanic”.
El festival de Danza 2012/2013 se cierra el 28 de junio con la Compañía
Nacional de Danza bajo la dirección de José Carlos Martínez que ofrecerá “Romeo y Julieta” con la Oviedo Filarmonía en el foso, a la usanza
de los grandes teatros.
Por primera vez, el Festival de Danza ofrece este año una programación paralela de danza alternativa
bajo el título de “Oviedo en danza”. En el
Campoamor se representará “Labofilm&1,
El lamento de Blancanieves”, de la asturiana Olga Mesa, y en el Filarmónica, las
obras “Después de cortar el césped…” y
Aupapa, a cargo ambas de Zig Zag Danza.
Ambos teatros acogen también durante
el mes de mayo las representaciones de
“OviedoX4 Teatro” : Sobre las tablas de El
Filarmónica, se aguarda la actuación de
Rafael Álvarez, el Brujo, que interpreta
“La Odisea”, una adaptación propia del
texto de Homero.

ZARZUELA AND DANCING TAKE TURNS
IN THE CAMPOAMOR
Between May and June the events of the Dance Festival interlace
with the line-up at the Oviedo Campoamor Theatre with the Zarzuela
Festival which, in this XX edition, will even offer another performance:
“El gato montés” (The wild/mountain cat), a production made by
the Madrid Zarzuela Theatre, conducted by José Carlos Plaza, with
choreography by the flamenco dancer Cristina Hoyos who has been
awarded in the Campoamor Theatre Lyric Awards for the best Opera
or Zarzuela production during the last season. The Zarzuela Festival
will close with a Recital of romances, choral works and preludes
by the Oviedo Philharmonic, the soprano Elisandra Melián and the
Capilla Polifónica “Ciudad de Oviedo” ( City of Oviedo Polyphonic
Chapel).
From the start of May, the Oviedo coliseum will hold the second part
of the Dance festival. The Ballet of the Bordeaux National Opera
with offer two performances; one, with the choreography “Chopin
Number One” and “Carmina burana” and the other with “Apollon”
and “Who cares?”
At the end of the month another French company, the National
Ballet of Marseilles, will take “Titanic” onto the Campoamor stage.
The Dance festival 2012/2013 will close on the 28th of June with the
National Dance Company directed by José Carlos Martínez offering
“Romeo and Juliet” with the Oviedo Philharmonic in the pit, in the
style of the great theatres.
For the first time the Dance Festival this year offers a parallel
programme of alternative dance called “Oviedo in dance”. In the
Campoamor there will be a performance of “Labofilm&1, el lamento
de Blancanieves” (Labofilm&1, the lament of Snow White) , by the
Asturian Olga Mesa, and by the Philharmonic, the works “Después
de cortar el césped…” (After cutting the grass) and Aupapa, both by
Zig Zag Danza.
Both theatres will also hold performances of “OviedoX4 Theatre”
during the month of May: On the Philharmonic stage awaits the
performance by Rafael Álvarez, el Brujo ( the Wizard), who will
interpret “The Odyssey”, his own adaptation of Homer’s text.
