04 DIGITAL FIBAAMERICAS.COM October 15-30, 2008 Quartet of Champions for womEn DIGITAL 04 GOLD for Puerto Rico Puerto Rico did not fail to fill expectations as one of the favorites and was able to win the 2008 Centrobasket Championship crown with an undefeated record. The Championship, played at the Mexican cities of Cancun and Chetumal, Quintana-Roo, closed with the game against the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Puerto Rico the game, 87-70, and the title. This is their ninth in the region and the third of the last five, interestingly; these last have all been in Mexican soil. In 2001, Puerto Rico won the championship played at Toluca, Mexico. In 2003, they won at Culiacán, Mexico, and now in 2008 at Cancun, Quintana-Roo, Mexico. It was not the game of point guard José Juan Barea, the championship's MVP, who pulled through to clinch the victory and the Gold, but the sharp long distance sniping from the team that cleared the way and, in the end, were the killing stroke for the U.S. Virgin Islands. Yet, the U.S. Virgin Islands game can not be dismissed easily as they have more than proved with this championship, the second in a row where they have captured the Silver, that they are a force to be reckoned in the Caribbean. Team Puerto Rico connected 15 out of 27 long distance shots, more than 50% accuracy, which accounted to something a little more than a third of their total game points. The most consistent player from this area was Carmelo Antrone Lee, shooting an impressive 5 out 7 from behind the 3-point line, followed closely by Carlos Arroyo who scored on 5 of 10 attempts from the same area. The closing scores for the games stand thus: Puerto Rico vs. Costa Rica, 85-68; Puerto Rico vs. Cuba, 103-90; Puerto Rico vs. Panamá, defending champion of the previous edition and unable to advance to the award round, 107-102; and lastly Puerto Rico vs. Dominican Republic, the other favorites for the event, 76-74. In all the victories, Jose Juan Barea played an important role; he was the man behind the machine, scoring, directing and otherwise having a hand at controlling the tempo of the games. Meanwhile, strong forward Angelo Reyes came through as the man to overcome and fear under the basket all throughout the championship. At this event were at stake 4 spots for the upcoming FIBA Americas Championship of 2009. These were to be awarded to the best four at the Centrobasket, e.g. Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic and Cuba. Team Dominican Republic, who had with them rising star Al Horford, of the Atlanta Hawks, and Francisco Garcia, small forward for Sacramento Kings, were defeated by the Team US Virgin Islands, 83-74, on their first outing and Mexico was unable to get to the awards phase in this championship and thus was left without a chance to go to the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship. They finished fifth, Panama achieved sixth and El Salvador and Costa Rica seventh and eight respectively. Meanwhile, Puerto Rican guard decided to leave for Israel and join the prestigious basketball Club Macabbi Tel Aviv de Israel. Leaked from the capital city of Spain, come good news; basketball club Real Madrid has signed veteran point guard Pepe Sánchez. The team has been trying to make this happen for some time without success while Pepe played for Etosa Alicante, Unicaja de Málaga and FC Barcelona of the ACB league. The game will be played on January 11th, 2009, between Sundsvall Dragons and the Akropol. Pippen will play due to his friendship with Mike Wilhelm, assistant coach to the Chicago Bulls and in charge of player scouting along with Anders Ohrn, president of the Dragons. Lefty Sánchez, who announced his retirement from the National Team of Argentina in 2007, after playing an important part during his nine year stint, also played with the Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers, but was never allowed to grow as was the case when he played for Temple University in the NCAA. oFficials Sponsors STAFF Pippen, who is 42 years old, has won 6 NBA championships with the Bulls and two Gold Olympic Medals (Barcelona'92 and Atlanta'96).
