All About Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel was born in Poland in 1907. During the Holocaust, Rabbi
Heschel was forced to leave Poland. He moved to America and began teaching at Jewish
colleges. Rabbi Heschel is known to have been a great scholar and philosopher. He was also
well known for fighting for civil rights for others. His efforts to spread peace and equality to all
people make him a Jewish hero.
Rabbi Heschel spoke out against war and was a leader in efforts to help Jews in the Soviet
Union when they were not being allowed to practice their religion freely. He was also very
involved in the civil rights movement that protested unequal laws for African Americans. He
was a good friend of Martin Luther King, Jr. and even flew to Selma, Alabama to march next
to him in a protest in 1965. He believed that everyone should live in peace and freedom.
It is very important to spread peace around you. The rabbis say that everyone should chase
after peace whenever they can. This is exactly what Rabbi Heschel did. He made the world a
better place by treating EVERYONE kindly and teaching his followers to respect one another.
