12 5. Take the chance of visiting Cabezas Rubias during the Consolation Fiestas or during the procession of Saint Sebastian, at the end of January because on these dates the small things are magnified thanks to the lens of joy and kindness. Calañas/ Gold, silver and bronze, this mining town was very importan in those years in wich the mining was being rediscovered in Huelva, at the end of the XIXth century. But its history goes deeper towards legendary roots that take us to the mythical Tartessian. Roman, Muslims and Christians have drilled the subsoil in Calañas always controlled by ‘El morante’, a hill with magic tradition that dominates the region. The marks outside reinforce the solid image of the Church of Saint Mery of the Grace (XVI-XVIIIth centuries), which is difficult to place in an artistic period. It houses the superb Major altarpiece made by Fernando Alguacil (1949) and also of the polychromatic sculpture of Our Lady of the Grace, by Francisco Buiza (1949). A good example of the local naive architecture is the Shrine of Our Lady Crowned (XV, XVIth Century) built on the remains o fan ancient necropolis. It is said that the avocation of Our Lady Crowned goes back to the Visigothic period, but whether these researches are confirmed or not, everybody in Calañas goes in procession on Easter Monday. Apart from this procession of the Crowned Virgin, there are other celebrations like the ‘pirulitos’ for Saint John and Sain Peter, the fiestas of the Auxiliadora, the soirées in Sotiel, La Zarza o El Perrunal, and the August Fiestas which are the perfect moment in space and time for Calañas inhabitants to meet. El Cerro de Andévalo/ Legend tells that in this hill there was a disappeared temple devoted to the Roman-Lusitanian god Endovellico. It is essential to walk around the Spain’s Square, the Council Town, the Sisters of the Cross Convent and the Cultural Centre of the Ville and the ancient Chapel of the Trinity (XVIth). But, the most important building is undoubtedly the Church of Saint Mary of the Grace (XVI-XVIIIth), which was seriously damaged by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. The Shrine of Saint Benedict, created by Marcos Jimenez in 1660, built on remains of the XIIth Century and with additions of the XVIIth, is the place where cerreños (the inhabitants of El Cerro de Andevalo) venerate the image of Saint Benedict the Abbot, patron saint since 1667, which was carved by Jose Espuni in 1953. He reproduced the disappeared original one. The festive life of the town revolves around its patron saint. Its inhabitants celebrate the vigil of Saint Benedict the nearest Sunday to the 21st of March. The first Sunday of May seven women in the typical costume of jamuguera go the shrine in procession. The bravest men will be the ‘lanzadores’ and will dance a ritual tribute to ‘poleo’, a group of dances the most important of which are folias, lanzas and fandangos. El granado/ Water, wind, reservoirs and eolian parks exploit the natural resources of this spot without damaging its tradition and its peace. With this new rout you will probably enjoy the neoclassical Church of Saint Cataline (XVIIIth), the naivety of the Gothic-Mudejar forms in the Chapel of the Holy Trinity (XVth) or the sobriety of the local architecture in the Wind Mill (XVIIIth) With the International Bridge El Granado has been released from an age-old isolation that however has contributed to keep the purity of its traditions. Good examples of this are the Fiestas, those of the Saint Cross in May and the Fiestas of Saint Catherine in November. El Granado also keeps an industrial past. The ancient mining port of La Laja (XIXth) is the last navigable port of the Guadiana River and the gate of the pyrites coming from the mines of western Andevalo. The Guadiana Miner Society, subsidiary of the French Saint Gobain Limited Company, exploited these mines as a dealership. It is recommendable to walk through the ancient line of the railway, converted into a pedestrian street, which links the Guadiana River with the Mines of Herrerias. Paymogo/ Ancient traditions tell about the conquest of these lands by Templar knights in the XIIIth century. If we speak about beauty and mystery, the Templar knights made a good choice with this area. It only takes a relaxed walk by the Ribera of the Chanza River to realize it. The secret ways of the smuggling has been substituted by an easy transition, the new international bridge that twins the lands from both sides of the frontier. It is a pleasure to contemplate de Church – Castle of Saint Mary Magdalene (XVII-XIXth Century), recently restored by Antonio Lopez. It is a temple enshrined in an artillery fortress built during the XVI-XVIIth centuries, when there were conflicts with Portugal. It has a style in transition between baroque and neoclassical and we recognise the authorship of Santiago de la Llosa, José Francisco Pérez y Agustín Fontela. The festive calendar of Paymogo starts in March with the Feria del Gurumelo (a kind of mushroom fair), which is a pleasure for discerning palates. In May the so-called Sint Cross and without resting too much, the patron saint Fiestas, Saint Mary Magdalene. After the summer hot, every 5th of October there is a procession of the venerated Virgin of the Rosary surrounded by the sound of shotguns, which is the tribute from local people. Puebla de Guzmán/ You will find many good things in Puebla de Guzman, but with the permission of the puebleños (inhabitants of Puebla de Guzman) its core is outside the urban area, in the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora (XVth, XIXth centuries). Puebla bursts with joy in April. People feel the emotion in the time to the pipers and with the procession of Nuestra Señora de la Peña. Women wear the traditional and coquettish gabachas costume and the lanzaores (dancers) draw in the air the dance of the swords. In contrast to the famous procession, Puebla still keeps for us the Fiestas of the Virgen de la Caridad (Virgin of Charity), the second Sunday of August. The verified pre-Roman traces, found in el cerro (hill) de la Longuera, confirm the existence of inhabited areas in the first millennium before Christ. The old castle of Alfayat is also an important link in its history. On its ruins is the Parochial Temple of the Saint Cross (Templo Parroquial de la Santa Cruz) of the XVIth century. Do not forget to visit it and gaze at the fabulous sculpture of the Immaculate Conception by Alonso Cano (XVIIIth century). Concerning civil architecture, the Wind Mill (XIII-XXth centuries) is outstanding. It faithfully represents the model of ancient mills from El Andevalo mentioned by Julio Caro Baroja with singular names such as Jaca Pinguá, Chinguichanga or La Aduana. San Bartolomé de la Torre/ The remains of an ancient Almohad fortress built in the XIIIth century and called the Tower (la Torre) gives its surname to Saint Bartholomew (San Bartolome). Legend says it was the way and the break of the caravans that carried from the mines in Tharsis the gold that decorated the inside of the biblical Salomon’s temple. The origin of the tower is nuclear, but some authors place the most ancient remains in the Phoenician period with consecutive Roman and Almohad uses. Its Parochial Temple (XVIIIth century) is very interesting. It is a simple floor with one single nave covered by a wood-coffering ceiling that shows a baroque style in transition towards the neoclassic. Maybe this is the result of its rebuilding by Pedro de Silva after the earthquake in 1755. At the end of January the Fiestas of San Sebastian takes place and every 24th August they celebrate their patron saint festivity, Saint Bartholomew who gives its name to the temple. This traditional local feast is very impressive because of the ‘dance of swords’ in which dancers go with Saint Bartholomew during the procession. And in the last weekend of June people in Saint Bartholomew meet because they want to, because they wan to share joy to have chat during the pilgrimage of the Friendship. San Silvestre de Guzmán/ It stands as a town since 1595, but according to the researchs in the Castelo site the first remains of the first settlement date back to five thousand years. Undoubtfully, the most important building is the Church of Saint Silvester (XV-XVI-XVIIIth), built at the expense of the Marquis of Ayamonte. It is a Gothic building with baroque elements. It has only one nave with a Mudejar coffered ceiling. Like in other places in El Andevalo, there are in San Silvestre amazing examples of preindustrial architecture such as its wind mills, essential for the benefit of the wheat in the area. You cannot miss the chance neither of walking along the remains Roman road parallel to the Guadiana River. The trekking lovers will discover landscapes that are not very usual in Andalusia, like the imperial legionaries’ way towards Emerita Augusta, Merida. Thousands of steps enjoying the Guadiana River on its way to the sea. Every 31th December the inhabitants of San Silvestre celebrates the feasts of their patron saint. The festive cyrcle is completed in May with the pilmgrimage of the Virgin of the Rosary, celebrated in the spot called Alto de la Gruya, and at the end of July with the Rancher’s fair. Sanlúcar de Guadiana/ The Guzmans, Dukes of Medina Sidonia, christen this town Sanlucar de Barrameda, the name of its ducal capital located in the shore of the Guadalquivir River. At the beginning, the town developed itself around the Castle. From there in peaceful times it spills it self to the West to find its natural place at the shores of the Guadiana River, looking for the embrace of the Church of Our Lady of the Flowers (XVIth), blessed by the image of the Virgin of La Rabida, an amazing baroque sculpture of the XVIIth century. The character of natural frontier for the Guadiana River and the need to guard and defend the Eastern lands of the river are the reasons for the existence of the Saint Mark’s Castle (XIIIth). As it’s compulsory in the whole Andevalo, with the first signs of the spring the town wears in feasts to tribute its patron saint, Our Lady of the Rabida. The arches of the dance of the flowers show the way through the gentle slope that goes down to the Guadiana River. In May, Sanlucar and El Granado join together in the natural place called la Dehesa, during the special pilgrimage of the Saint Cross. Sanlucar de Guadiana is today the perfect place for nautical sportsmen who are looking for the calm of its shores towards Portugal. From the margins of the river people cheer to the participants of the Guadiana’s ascent by canoe or the ascent and descent by sail. Santa Bárbara de Casa/ A simple spot that appears in the middle of the meadow and it lightens it self up to turn the green of the hill into the white of the lime. The ceramics and lithics remains found in the megalithic group in Cabezo de los Vientos and Necropolis of Zarcita allows to date the settlement between the end of the Neolithic and the Bronze age (2700 B.C). Under the vigilance of the remains of the Cabezo de los Vientos frotress, Santa Barbara dates its Carta Puebla (municipal charter) in 1504. You should visit the Parochial Temple of Our Lady of Mercy (sXVIIIth) and the Shrine of its patron saint, Saint Barbra. But in my opinion the woodland, the hunt, the forestry exploitation, the iberian pork and the sheeps are also outstandig because they give our palate high-quality unique cheeses and bread, a simple luxury that becomes art in this town. The beating of a small town is measured by the joy and the amount of it feasts. Santa Barbra celebrates its day the 20th of January but it’s not enough so they celebrate the pilmgrimage after the Resurrection Day in Easter which is held in the landscape of Chaparral. Between them Santa Barbra celebrates the Carnival with its passacaglia. At the beginning of Agoust is the festival, but the most important dey is the 4th Decembre, Santa Barbra’s day the patron saint of the miners. Valverde del Camino/ The Facanías inn, the origin of the town, appears in the XIVth century in a crossroad dated back to the Roman roads age. However, the Dolmen Group called Los Gabrieles delays the habitation date of these lands. The Church of Our Lady of the Reposo (XVI-XVIIIth centuries) is a very important Renaissance building with baroque contributions. The shrines of Saint Anne (XVIth century) and the Trinity (XVIIIt century) remind us again the importance of this crossroad that gives the town an industrial character, concerning furniture and shoes (industries that are still very important), and that also played a role in the great minning expolitations of the XIXth century. From this time remains restored the head office of The United Alkali Company Limited, known in Spanish as Casa Direccion. It is a Victorian building of 1912 that was restored in 1998, to become an Ethnographic and crafts Museum. The Shrine of the Saint, is more recent but not less important. It is a Sevilian neo-baroque building erected on the site occupied by the ancient Shrine of Saint Sebastian (XVIIIth century). The Carnival of Valverde is very popular; its inhabitants keep them even during the dictatorial times by holding them in the forest. By the end of June they celebrate the Velada de Santa Ana and the fair in August. But if you are about to choose a date I propose you the weekend near the 12th September, the feast of the Our Lady of the Reposo, the patron saint. It is said that she protected the town of the consequences of the earthquake of Lisbon. Villablanca/ The Dolmen of Tenencia dates the origin of the first settlements in the Chalcolithic period, although the date of the Carta Puebla (municipal charter) is 1531. According to municipal files the first data concerning the building of the Church of Saint Sebastian Martyr goes back to 1612, blessed in February 1618. The Shrine of Our Lady of la Blanca has a simple but nice Mudejar style from the XVth century and was remodelled in the XVII. The shrine is blessed by an anonymous Sivillian sculpture of the XVIth century. With the Easter Sunday Villablanca gets ready for joy with the intime and peculiar Fiestas de Bollopico and then in July, the Market feasts. Then in August the town gets dressed with strange colours and costumes from faraway places with the International Dance Festival, with typical dance groups from everywhere in the world. According to tradition in the XVth century a shepherd from Lepe saw a white pigeon on an olive tree, in which the Holy pretence of Our Lady of la Blanca appeared later. Since then, the last days of August people in Viilablanca celebrate the feasts of their patron saint with the dance of the sticks to the sounds of bagpipes and small drums. Villanueva de los Castillejos/ The most ancient remains are Celtic, but the materials found in the hill called Pie del Castillo give proof of the imperial troops’ visit. In the Roman routes it was a place for the Roman legions to rest and to provision on their way to Merida. Diego Antonio Diaz and Fernado Rosales cut the Church of the Purest Conception (XVIIIth, XIXth and XXth centuries), which despite the consecutive remodelling still keeps a deep baroque flavour in transition towards neoclassic. It has a Latin cross floor plan and only one nave that venerates the image of the Purest Conception made in polychromatic wood by Leon Ortega (1950), together with Jesus crucified (SVIth century) and two more baroque sculptures of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Francis of Assisi. Devotes to the transformation of agricultural products, Villanueva de los Castillejos stops its activity on Easter Sunday to go into a pilgrimage. Together with the inhabitants of El Almendro they go to the Osma field to venerate Our Lady of Piedras Albas. Its festive calendar is completed with the San Matias feasts in February and the Velada (evening) in July. Villanueva de las Cruces/ The beginnings of Villanueva de las Cruces are found in a first Roman settlement located in ‘Cumbre del Charnecal’, 1,200 metres far from the current centre of population whose origin was the building of an inn in the crossroad there was in this place. In the book by Alfonso XI ‘Libro de Monteria’ the locality appears as ‘Villa Nueua’, the ancient Roman ‘Vila Nova’ where there is a parochial temple on one nave, the Neoclassical style Church of Saint Mary of the Cross. The hermitage of Saint Sebastian dates from the beginning of the XVIII Century and is a marvellous viewpoint in this region. The patron saint’s day to honour Saint Sebastian is celebrated the closest weekend to the 20th day of January with important ceremonies such as the coronation of the Queen and the ladies-in-waiting and the opening speech. It is also important the big bonfire called ‘La Candela’ (bonfire in Spanish) made with holm oak firewood in La Candela’s square that remains lighted during 15 days. The second weekend of August Saint Sebastian is surrounded by ‘los Danzaores’ (the dancers). They dance in his honour the Garrotes’ dance of pastoral origin to the sound of the bagpipes and small drums. The female patron saint is not less, in the shore of the Oraque, the pilgrimage of Saint Mary of the Cross is celebrated the first weekend of May when is moved from the Church to the Recueros’ place and back joined by the Simpecado. Civil engineers have overcome the difficult orography of the area. There are many examples, one of the most relevant is the mining railway viaduct, which is a superb work built in 1866 that enabled the connections among the mines in El Andevalo and the wharf over the River Odiel, in Huelva. 1 1. More lasting than bronze (Horacio. Odas III, 30, 1) www.turismohuelva.org Legends prior to the Roman Empire tell us the mercies of a little minor god that ended in the altars of the imperial troops. Endovellico, Endovel, Andoval was a Lusitane kind god that gives its name to the region and still has congratulations for those who come to know his land, El Andevalo. In these lands, which in other time were the forgotten boundaries of the state, the third millennium has come with the management of two natural elements as old as time: water and wind. The wind is the clean west wind and the water is that of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche, which draws small banks in its course that will be the affluents of the Guadiana River. Dam after dam, the region has become one of the most important historical reserves in Andalusia. It is impossible to establish a route but yet a recommendation of a starting point. Let yourself guide from each of its towns by the miners, the mushrooms hunters, the pilgrims, the early hunters, the dancers, the men on horseback, the singers in a rumbo night. The Guadiana River, the nautical Andevalo, opens up the doors to the mining Andevalo, deep and hard, rocked by the unique singing of the Ruta de Fandango (Andalusian folk song). The lyrics deal with hunting, horse and smuggling. These old isolated lands are now opened to Portugal through two new land accesses, the bridges of El Granado and Paymogo, which permeabilize the old frontier, the line, and reveal the secrets of El Andevalo towards the west. This is what El Andevalo has as a whole, the peculiarities of each town are stated below. …and what about the cuisine? El Andevalo, devoted to the land and almost isolated for centuries, offers us a simple, natural and delicious gastronomy. Its Culinary bases takes root in what the land provides. Therefore it is a seasonal cuisine elaborated with products from the farm and forest harvesting, together with those from the big and small game. Besides, to these variables we have to add the energy needs of workers in the mine and, of course, the Catholic liturgical calendar. From the pig slaughter in winter, you can try cold meats, the cabbage stew, roast pestorejo (the front part of the pig’s head) and the cachuela alosnera (stew from El Alosno). After the first rains we have the gurumelos, mycological expertise in the area that appears in hundreds of different dishes. The typical baking in the area are fried and made of honey, like the gañotes (fried pieces of pastry with spyral shape), pancakes, fritters and gordillos. And there is no spring festival without habas”enzapatás” (beans cooked with pennyroyal) which aromatize the kitchens and evenings in El Andevalo with the unique perfume of the pennyroyal. Other specialities are the stew of lamb and sheep cheese, in Santa Barbara de Casa you can find unique cheeses. Calañas delights us in Easter with the sweet of the “esesia”. La Zarza respects the vigil with cod little omelettes. Typical from El Al- mendro is the truffle, made as an omelette or with rice. In El Cerro del Andevalo you can find the Revoltillos (concoction) and small game is typical from El Granado: rabbit and partridge in sauce together with homemade desserts such as fritters, roses, or coscaranes (fied pastry with orange). Migas (typical dish made with bread crumbs, olive oil and pork) and pastry made of honey are usual in Paymogo. Poleá (something like oatmeal porridge) and sweet grapefruit in Puebla de Guzman. In San Bartolomé de la Torre the best product is something as simple as bread and it also has a pastry that cannot be compared. Deer and wild boar are typical in Sanlucar de Guadiana, together with its curious “river stews”, made of barbel or eel. Valverde del Camino surprises the visitors with the stew of beans and gurumelos. And finally, Villanueva de las Cruces reserves us the Custodian Bread (homemade in wood oven) and its unspeakable torta de chicharrones (cake made with pork scratchings). Newcomers should try the pork head in Villablanca. Besides, Villanueva de los Castillejos, Alosno and Puebla de Guzman add the traditional distillation of liquors and spirits; a thousand and one varieties that are well worth discovering. Alosno/ The visit must began with a baroque-style building with Mudejar floor, the Temple of Saint mary of the Grace, which was damaged by the earthquake in 1755. It is also important to visit the Shrine of Our Lord of the Column (XVIth century). A good example of the Andalusian popular architecture, characterized by the wthite colour and simple and clean forms. If you have a happy spirit prepare your voice. It would be strange that in your visit, no matter the date, you won’t find any exponent of traditional music. And remember, the Fandango (traditional kind of flamenco song) is cané, that is is singed in groups, but therer is a wide range of personal and valiente (brave) styles. Regarding the feasts, in January the town celebrates the lights of Saint Anthony the Abbot (Luminarias de San Antonio Abad), purfier fire rithual for animals and after the Easter there is a ritual called Pascua de la Lechuga (The Lettuce Easter) in which a boy doll of Judas is burnt together with lettuces, bread and boiled eggs. Then there comes the Crosses of May, the big and the small and in June the pilmgrimage of Saint Anthony of Padua. And finally in summer the Corpus, the Cultural Week of the Youth, the Jachas of the Inmaculate Conception (jachas are columns made of long dried stems) and the pilmgrimage of the branch (La Rama) in which people goes to the field to pick up the branches to decorate their representation of their the stable at Bethlehem. But is in the night from the 23th to the 24th of June when Alosno really changes. The small drums plays for the dawn to announce the solemn procession of Saint John the Baptist, escorted by the the Cascabeleros (men with little bells) during the four hours of the processional way. Tharsis, mining exploitation which was mentioned in the Bible because of its contribution to the gilding of King Salomon’s Temple is a minor local entity with its own different characteristics. The mines in Tharsis whre rediscovered by Ernesto Deligny in the middle of the XIXth century and exploited by The Tharsis Sulphur & Copper Company Limited, This lends Tharsis a British flavour. El Almendro/ Although all the areas around the Guadiana river and on the route of the old Roman roads it looks like the verified origin of the town is in the ancient settlement of Osma, from where its inhabitants move into their current location, the spot of Agua del Almendro, in 1519. The mills from the XVIIIth century are the best proof of the diligence of its people. It is very important the Mill of Pie del Castillo. The most important building in the urban area is undoubtedly the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe (XVI-XVIIIth centuries). It is a Renaissance building with a Mudejar floor plan and was very remodelled after the Lisbon earthquake. Butt he heart of El Almendro inhabitants is outsider, in the spot of the field of Osma, behind a simple facade made of lime and under a belfry with a locksmith cross. I refer to the Shrine of Piedras Albas, a naïve building from the XVth century. Every Easter Sunday all the devout followers from El Almendro and Villanueva de los Castillejos meet at the feet of Our Lady of Piedras Albas to the sounds of an ancient pastoral dance called ‘los Cirochos’. According to tradition, at the end of the XIVth century the venerated imaged appeared in front of the shepherd Alonso Gomez under a layer of snow that hide ancient Roman remains. Since then there has been a number of pilgrims and promises. Cabezas Rubias/ Vast areas of cereal covered its mountains and hills with a straw blonde colour, ready to be grinded in the Divisa Mill of ‘’white lime and srong presence”. This is a good example of the application of nautical technologies, not to drive boats, but to grind cereals. The walk towards de Church of Our Lady of the Consolation, of Mudejar origin but rebuilt by Jose Alvarez after the terrifying consequences of the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. The building has a solid appearance and academicist symmetry and it brings to bear dynamism and calm, a peace that you can feel inside when you are in front of the Virgin of the Sorrows. But undoubtfully the views from the shrine of Saint Sebastian make the traveller discover the grandeur and the exquisiteness of simplicity. No he is ready to find the artisan of palms, hampers and carpets.
